(More customer reviews)The Freud edge banding system occupies a unique niche between the household iron and multi-thousand dollar (aka "real production") edgers. So far as I can tell, it's the only option for semi-professional production of heat-set edge banding.
I find it a highly compromised tool. As the old National Geographics used to say, it's in a land of problems and promises. Conceptually, it's a darn good idea. The execution could be a whole lot better.
Let's look at edge banding for a minute. It's not much thicker than a business card (exclusive of adhesive)and only fractionally wider than the wood it is applied to. It takes a fair amount of heat to soften the glue. The guide system on a bander needs to hold material flat, square and unbowed, although everything that is being done previously almost guarantees the opposite.
The EB100 sometimes does the trick. There's only so much precision one can expect from stamped steel guides. When the machine works, it's a lot faster than the household iron. When it doesn't, it's hard to resist the temptation to throw the sucker out the window. Although one can remove improperly applied edging, it takes more effort than to apply it by hand in the first place.
Freud should improve the guide system and the table on the EB100 to make it a truly useful machine. Machined, precision guides would are necessary for this operation. And they shoud re-think using heat-set banding on a machine table that is subject to high temperatures. After 20 minutes of operation, the front edge of the table peels up. This doesn't impair function, it just looks like hell.
I know woodworkers that get excellent results from this system. Despite significant experience with precision machinery, I can't duplicate their results. Maybe if I were more skilled, I could. I am uncomfortable with a machine that makes me guess continually.
