(More customer reviews)I'm hard on kitchen sinks - there's no doubt about it. If it's stainless, I'll have it scratched and ugly-looking in no time. If it's porcelon over cast iron, my sink will be dull and scratched. Thus, when it was time to remodel our kitchen after 19 years in this house, I began looking for something more durable than these other two alternatives.
I was intrigued by Blanco's silgranit product, but wanted to do some personal testing. I obtained some sample pieces from a local kitchen and bath showroom; then I brought them home for testing. I hammered one piece, and then tried driving a nail into the product - no damage. I scraped a stainless steel knife across the sample and then tried gouging it - no damage. I attempted to scorch it, using a disposible lighter, then I placed on an electric stove burner that had just been turned off - no damage. I was close to being firmly convinced and, after talking with several granite fabricators who installed these sinks, decided to purchase one.
In talking with the saleswoman with whom I have dealt in the past, I learned several things. Because this sink is deeper than standard double sinks, the drain trap must be lowered. If you cannot do so, this sink is not for you. You should get a compact garbage disposal, otherwise the unit may not fit under your sink. Even though some models of Blanco sinks can be top-mounted as well as undermounted, you may run into problems. The extra thickness added to that of the countertop will not allow you tighten your faucet enough for proper functioning. Thus, while I liked the Blanco sink with the off-center drain, I decided against chancing the problems previously mentioned. Further, drilling out the holes for your fixtures may cause cracks in the sink which would likely not be covered by the warranty.
I purchased the metallic gray sink; it is a dark color which should not become stained by coffee and other foods. When I was visiting various kitchen supply retailers, several had "metallic gray" samples that were lighter - the color of nickle. However, the sample I obtained from Blanco was a much darker color. When the sales woman called Blanco, no one could explain why there was a significant color variation. However, she was told the dark charcoal color is what is currently available.
I chose to purchase my sink locally; our retailers are willing to come close to internet prices. The deciding factor was that the retailer would deal with any issues relating to shipping damage - if it occurred - and would save me time and frustration.
I love this sink. It is deep, easy to care for, and difficult to damage. No more ugly scratched, stained, or dull sink finishes for me!
