(More customer reviews)I couldn't agree more with the reviews I've read. Technical service is also a problem, whilst they will contact you in 3 days! The alarm is our main problem, which says the battery is defective, while it has a 13 volt charge. Also, the alarm won't shut off with the reset button, which will start short-circuiting the rest of the system. I've gone through two batteries in 4 months, obviously that wasn't the problem. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT unless you have a family member who works there and can replace your system every 3 months.

(More customer reviews)I've had this Basement Watchdog system in place for 18 months now and it's worked just fine. I live in Chicago and we had a big 7" overnight rain last month and my primary sump pump was pumping constantly but due to the heavy inflow of water into the pit, this one kicked in and ran at the same time to help out. This helped keep our basement dry.
About every 6 months an alarm has gone off indicating it's time to add distilled water to the battery. Nice to get that forewarning. It does have a computer controller panel in it, which runs the various alarms, so plug this unit into a surge protector that goes into your outlet receptacle to help protect the sensitive electronics.
I'm glad I've got this system, it does give some peace of mind in times of heavy rain and power outages. Also, recently I called the manufacturer here in Illinois with a question on how long battery life typically is. I got a call back within an hour and I was told 5 to 7 years life expectancy.

(More customer reviews)It's expensive but not nearly as bad as having a basement flood while away on vacation. If you are replacing a sump pump or if you are adding a secondary pump this is the one to get. Everything is assembled already and you just have to connect it to the outlet pipe with the included rubber coupler. The instructions are amazing and there are even instructions for removing the pump from the packaging to avoid damaging the more delicate parts of the pump. No need for an independent check valve as this unit includes one for each pump. Replacement parts seem to be available in case something fails.

A house we are remodeling had a leaky basement. Heavy rains lasting a few days resulted in an inch or more of water in the basement. A real mess. We got bids from 6 basement waterproofing companies. Five of the six said they used Zoeller equipment because they had the most reliable pumps, and past customers whose pumps failed were bad for business.
Our contractor installed a sump basin with TWO pumps: a Zoeller model 507 as backup to a 110 volt Zoeller M-53. At a 5 feet head (rise from pump to water discharge), the M-53 is rated at 43 gallons per minute, and the 507 is 23 GPM. The 507 provides extra protection if the M-53 should fail due to a storm, blackout, damage, mechanical malfunction, obstruction in the pit, or when the M-53 fails to keep up with excessive water due to rain or overloading. It uses a group 27 or group 31, 12 volt, marine battery.
The only disadvantage of a battery backup pump other than price, is that the battery needs replacement every 4 to 5 years.
Our large 12 volt marine battery sits on a strong shelf two feet off the floor, and the battery charger is attached to the wall. As far as I know, our model 507 pump has never kicked-in due to an emergency, but it certainly alleviates worries about basement flooding.

(More customer reviews)I bought this product in Oct of 2007. I bought the version that goes inline on your current sump's discharge pipe.
It came 90% preassembled, so there was very little assembly work to do other than the actual install.
The install is straightforward, but time consuming. Cutting a section out of the PVC discharge pipe and installing the basepump was easy. Running 3/4" copper pipe to feed the basepump took me about 4 hours, but I'm a novice with plumbing, and this was my first real plumbing job.
Now that it's installed, it works great.
One recommendation I have is to install a water hammer arrestor near the pump. One of the other posters recommended it, and I did it, and I'm glad I did - the pump shuts off pretty suddenly and it would have been really loud without the arrestor.
