Maxus EX8402 21 Amps 5 HP 60-Gallon Cast Iron Oiled Vertical Compressor Review

I bought this compressor brand new for $420, and have been completely satisfied with it from day one. This piece of equipment is not for someone looking for a "ready out of the box" compressor. It has to be plumbed into place and requires about $125 worth of accessories: power cord, shutoff valve, water trap/dirt separator, pressure regulator, hose, etc. It also requires about 4 or 5 hours worth of labor to plumb. Overall I am completely satisfied with this compressor, it's quiet, and by quiet I mean I can talk over it without yelling, like the case with most smaller oil free compressors. I highly recommend this compressor to anyone that needs an almost endless supply of air without waiting for the pump and tank to catch back up.

Campbell Hausfeld WL670100RB 26-Gallon Flat Top Compressor Review

Very slow to build air and very loud. Takes about 15 minutes to fill up the small 26 gallon tank. Would not recommend for home use. I have it in my garage and it shakes the entire house when running. Not enough CFM to blow out my sprinkler system. Thinking about returning it and getting an oiled model with more power.

Campbell Hausfeld VS5006 15 Amp 2 Horsepower 20 Gallon Oiled Wheeled Single Tank Compressor
Average Reviews:

The compressor, being an oiled design makes it SO much quieter than the oil-free compressor it is replacing. I can actually hear someone talk now when the compressor is running. Output seems to be OK but you won't be able to split the airline and run 2 cutoff wheels on it or anything like that. For the home-owner garage use it should be fine for me. I don't think I'll ever buy an oil-free compressor again after hearing the noise difference. Shouldn't need to buy another for a long time though since it is rated for 3,000 hours-that would be over 4 months of running 24x7.
The biggest problem I had was shipping. The first unit had a broken air regulator and pressure sending unit. The air filter also was knocked loose but not damaged during shipping. I was able to get a replacement sent to me by Amazon, but the replacement was damaged even more. Same items were damaged except this pressure regulator was even more broken (it was absolutely destroyed). I kept the first one since it was less damaged and was able to get replacement parts for cheap. Amazon said they wouldn't be able to ship me a third unit and even gave me a wrong number to try to get replacement parts. Well it was a number that could have sold them to me, but Amazon said I would be able to get free replacements from the number they gave me...that wasn't so. To their credit, Amazon did refund me some of the purchase price which I used to get the replacement parts. I think the problem is the item just isn't packed well enough from the factory to survive the shipping (first was Fedex Ground, second was UPS....both damaged). Some more bracing to keep the compressor from 'falling' inside the box onto the parts that broke would be helpful. The other review at this time also indicates he had problems receiving a compressor free of damage. The price jumps around alot, I got it for less then 50% of the current Amazon price of $498.72 but it only stayed at that price for I think 1 day then went up significantly. For $500 price, you could probably get a bigger unit if you needed it.
Oh, be sure to add oil before starting it up. There are labels all over it stating that, so if you do that, then you obviously didn't pay much attention to it before starting it up!

Campbell Hausfeld HL4101 8-Gallon, 1.3 Running-Horsepower Oil Lube Compressor Review

Campbell Hausfeld HL4101 8-Gallon, 1.3 Running-Horsepower Oil Lube Compressor
Average Reviews:

After intense research I compared this unit with the Makita Mac 2400 as well as pancake compressors by Bostitch and Hitachi.
Good points:
- portable with wheels (MAC 2400 same weight, 77 lbs, with no wheels, ouch that is heavy, I tried to pick up the MAC in the store)
- larger air tank than pancake units, and almost as portable.
- good air flow rating (better than pancake units)
- inexpensive
- oil lubed (should last longer than non-oiled units)
- regulator works well but not as good as the $300+ models
Bad Points:
- this unit will not work well with air hungry tools like an impact wrench. Not enough air flow. I had to wait for the unit to pump up.
- the unit pumps to 125 PSI and then, when using tool and draining tank, will repump again at 85 PSI. When I was using an impact wrench it needed at least 100 PSI to get enough air flow. This slowed me down but I could finish the job.
- no quick connector on compressor output (but easy to fix this)
- I was worried about shipping damage (as noted in many other reviews) so I bought this unit locally.
- The tank is smaller than I would like but I wanted a portable unit. If you have the space, and money, I would get a larger tank unit.
- This baby is loud. If I were in the same room with this unit while I was working for any length of time, I would be wearing ear protection.
I Still gave the unit 5 stars because it suits my needs. It will be used mostly for air nailing and only occasionaly for other air hungry tools like impact wrench ect. I plan to use it outside while nailing, or in another room, or at the other side of the garage, not in an in-home workshop, so the noise is not a huge issue for me. The main selling points for me is that the low cost, small size, portability and larger air flow outweigh the disadvantages. I can use other tools, not just the nailers and the unit is small enough to be portable. With pancake units nailing is all you can do (low airflow).

Maxus EX8405 15 Amp 3-Horsepower 60-Gallon Oiled Vertical Compressor Review

Maxus EX8405 15 Amp 3-Horsepower 60-Gallon Oiled Vertical Compressor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So I bought the Maxus, and it's a great compressor. But what it can do is in the specs, and since they are the same as the specs for every other lower priced version of this Campbell compressor, I don't think they're a reason to buy the Maxus version. But I do think it's a great compressor and worth the price premium, and I'll tell you why so you can see if it's also true for you.
The least expensive of the Campbell versions is the Husky at HomeDepot for $430. TractorSupply Company sells the Campbell labeled version for $439, and I think it has the full sized mounting platform for the pump, unlike the shorter version on the ones sold by HomeDepot (it's also a really cool yellow color). The other easy to find competitor is the Kobalt at Lowes, which has a slightly higher CFM rating. I suspect, but don't know, that it is similar in quality to the Husky/Campbell.
So why consider paying $700 for the Maxus, not $430 for the Husky (or $470 for the Kobalt)?
Well, first off, the $430 Husky doesn't really cost $430. You have to buy a pressure cut off switch and a regulator. A Square D pressure switch for the compressor will set you back $30-40. A decent regulator another $35 on ebay, a bit more elsewhere. So now your cost is actually $500. The Kobalt has a pressure switch so you just need the regulator and ball valve, so the math is about the same. Add in tax/S&H and they're right $530. Still $170 less than my Maxus.
Of course my Maxus came to my door. If I driven to homedepot, bought it, loaded it on a pickup, driven it home, and unloaded it, I figure it'd take 1 1/2 to 2 hours easy. Then I'd have had to plumb it. Figure an hour more to hook up the pressure switch and the regulator. I just spent 3 or more hours plus gas. Conservative value of my time and effort? $40. Since I'd have needed help loading and unloading it, this would also have been work for my friends. Using $40 for that driving, loading, and plumbing at $40, my Maxus at $700 now looks around $130 more than the Husky or the Kobalt, since it gets delivered to your door, professionally plumbed with a regulator, 2 quick connects, and the pressure switch.
It also has a better cage around the belt drive and fan. Yeah, you need a ball valve for the tank, and you need to hard wire it like any of these, but my Maxus saved me a lot of time and effort. (edit: sorry, the ball valve actually comes with the compressor. I recently found it when I got out the manual to see how often I'm supposed to change the oil. It was in the box under some papers and the quart of extra oil I'd thrown in there.)
The Husky/Campbell versions, and the Kobalt don't have the large cage protecting the belt drive and fan, just a plastic shroud around a smaller belt. They don't have the hose hanger either, which is a nice feature.
With the Husky/Campbell or the Kobalt, I'd have gotten a great compressor, and it'd have been plumbed with one tank connected regulator. The Maxus let's me add that ball valve shutoff and a 3/8" regulator as an addition to the control panel with it's regulator and quick connects. That means I can plug two 1/4" hoses into the control panel for nailers, tools, or an airbrush, and, I can run a 3/8" hose off the tank regulator for my mini HVLP. I also got a longer warranty.
Is that worth $130? It was to me.
If you need an extra 1-2 CFM in a single stage compressor, you can look at the Kobalt from Lowes. It looks like a nice compressor, although my second choice would be the 60 gallon Chicago Pneumatic compressor. Garage-Pak lists that at $570 delivered. It comes with a pressure switch, a thermally protected motor, puts out slightly more CFM than the Campbell/Husky/Maxus, or the Kobalt, so all you'd need is the ball valve and regulator. I figure $620 total. But the Maxus had more CFM than I needed, a better warranty, it's the least hassle to get it up and running, and I thought it had the most useful features.
Hope this little write up helps you with your decision.
Good luck,
Todd

***Product Description
5HP, 26 Gallon Vertical Compressor, Direct Drive Oilless Pump, Attached Wheels, Delivers 6.9
CFM @ 40 PSI & 5.5 CFM @ 90 PSI, Made In USA, UL Listed, Carries Standard Duty One
Year Warranty. ***
The above product description is misleading at best. Google "CFM" and "SCFM" and you'll find CFM is a static number where SCFM can be measure at pressure (typically @ 40 & 90 psi). I took the chance that the copy meant SCFM given the numbers provided were at pressure and rated at the standard 40 & 90psi. Not the case and I'm a little frustrated by the copyright's or seller's lack of knowledge. Upon product arrival the 5hp motor is really a 2hp motor (5 peak) and the SCFM is about half of the incorrectly used "cfm" above (~ 4.8 @ 40 & 2.? @ 90). A disappointing transaction in that I had to return the product and look for something that truely produced in the range of 6.9 SCFM@ 40psi.
The plastic housing/tool storage area actually looked to be very useful when viewing in person. If you want to run a brad nailer or pump up a few tires or basketballs once in a while, the product would work great. If you want to run any cutters, die grinders, or anything that would require even moderate air flow I'd move on.

Maxus EX8403 21 Amp 5 HP 80-Gallon Cast Iron Oiled Two-Stage Vertical Compressor
Average Reviews:

I have owned this compressor for about two weeks so far so I can only comment on setup and limited use, as well as voltage requirements that prospective owners should know about before purchasing any air compressor.
I installed it at my place of business and quickly realized that the motor is wired for 230 volts, but my service supplies 208 volts. I emailed Campbell Hausfeld and they replied within a week, telling me that the motor requires a minimum of 215 volts to operate. I then called Emerson where the compressor motor is made and they told me that they do not recommend running the motor on 208 volts, and that the motor is not capable of being rewired for 230 volts.
Further research led me to hire a electrician to install a "buck and boost transformer" to raise my voltage from 208 volts to 230 volts. This was the solution I chose, rather than return the compressor and buy one that ran at 208 volts, because my research showed that the compressor would run more efficiently at 230 volts than at 208 volts. After all, if I couldn't achieve the maximum cfm that the compressor is capable of then why bother with a 2 stage compressor in the first place? The transformer cost $ 138.00 and the electrician another $ 180.00 for his expertise.
When the installation was complete we threw the switch and the compressor ran perfectly with a moderate amount of noise and hardly any vibration (I bolted it to the concrete floor with neoprene pads under the feet). So far I have only used it for about two hours on one project, but from what I can see it works perfectly. It builds pressure up to 175 psi as listed, then sits idle until the pressure drops down to 125 psi. I have another project coming up within the next two months and will follow up this review at that time.
UPDATE: I have now owned this compressor for about 18 months and I am happy to report that it has worked perfectly. The only con that I can see is that there is a very slight dripping of compressor oil that seems to be coming from the drain plug and dripping down the side of the air tank over time. I see this as an extremely minor issue because the level of compressor oil is still where I started when looking at the glass "bubble" on the side of the unit. I have not had to add any compressor oil to the unit. In hindsight, I should have removed the oil drain plug and wrapped it in teflon tape before filling the unit with compressor oil. I would definitely recommend this compressor.

Campbell Hausfeld HVLP Turbine Paint Sprayer - 4 PSI, 0.06 GPM, Model# HV2002 Review

Campbell Hausfeld HVLP Turbine Paint Sprayer - 4 PSI, 0.06 GPM, Model# HV2002
Average Reviews:

I purchased the CH HVLP sprayer as an alternative to a compressor plus gun setup for spraying clear finishes as well as interior trim paint. The previous CH products that I had purchased had been great. This one has been a great disappointment.
First, the transfer of material to the surface being painted appears to be about as inefficient as a normal high pressure sprayer. This is especially true when spraying higher viscosity coatings that require more airflow in order to move them. The second issue is the fineness of the spray pattern. This unit produces a pretty rough and uneven pattern compared with other units. The air supply hose is a real handicap as it is not only too stiff for easy use, but it has a really nasty chemical smell that just doesn't go away.
Summary, I have a CH compressor, an airless sprayer and this HVLP. I can reccommend the first two without hesitation. This last is just not worth it. Get a Fuji, Apollo or perhaps the top of the line Wagner. They are all $500 or more, but at least they do the job.

Campbell Hausfeld VT6290 20 Gallon ASME Oil-Lubricated Horizontal Air Compressor Review

Campbell Hausfeld VT6290 20 Gallon ASME Oil-Lubricated Horizontal Air Compressor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I too had a shipping problem though with another carrier (ABF). The shipping box is flimsy and cannot adequately support nor protect the compressor and parts. Mine arrived with a broken regulator, pressure gauge and air-filter assembly all of which apparently snapped off during shipment with no visible exterior box damage.
As the other reviewer also mentioned the compressor does NOT come with oil so be sure to have SAE30 air-compressor oil ready when it arrives. The manual does indicate the usage of Mobil 1 synthetic 10W-30 too. Also, you will need to provide your choice of air outlet connector.
If it wasn't for the bad shipment packaging I'd say initially that the compressor is a good buy but if Campbell Hausfeld has so little regard to protecting their product in shipment to you I question the integrity of the machine itself. The better products all seem to have better packaging and this one ranks poorly and for that I give it 3 stars tops.
UPDATE 7/15: I am updating this review a full day after receiving and can add more to the trials and tribulations of purchasing a C-H compressor.
I was able to replace the broken regulator and gauge with a Home Depot Husky replacment for $17.99. The oil was another $3 (buy two pints as you need to replace the oil after 1 hour use). A 1/4" quick connect female added $4 as well. The air filter assembly is currently taped but working until I can get a replacment.
After replacing the parts and turning on to run for the 10 minute break-in period I was plagued with mutliple leaks. One leak occurred in the main pipeline to tank (seal was improperly installed), another in the undamaged tank pressure gauge (somone missed adding teflon tape) and the third in the pressure tubing to the cutoff switch (not tightened). All in all if you include travel time to Home Depot nearly 2-1/2 hours were spent just getting the compressor to work only to discover that there is a leak at weld where the pump mount attaches to the tank.
On the plus side is the quietness and the nicely powered 120/240v motor. Do watch r gauge of wire (use 12ga min.) if using an extension cable as this compressor does draw a load when starting.
IMHO I wouldn't order a product like this if you need it for an immediate job as it will take to either repair yourself or to return and await a replacement. I have not heard back from Amazon Customer Service as yet and I am still pondering exchanging or flat out returning the item while waiting for Amazon to consider what avenue of resolution to pursue. I needed this compressor to replace my dead one and ordered it to coincide with my time at home as I could not expect my wife to unload it. I replaced the parts so that I could at least have use during the upcoming week off.
To Amazon: it is just as important for you to insure that your customer will receive a product undamaged and to that end I lay partial blame on you for not checking product quality and packaging. It is now my decision that I will be returning this item.

It's a great little compressor for the price. Fast air build recovery time. Very easy cold winter day starts right up first pull! I use it to charge a 80 gallon tank on a 3/8" to 1/2" connect, I run a 1" impact for truck tire service, it takes a little longer to build up my big tank than a larger compressor but thusfar (about 3 months with everyday use) I am very satisfied & plan on using it for a long time to come. You can't beat the price & from what I've seen of the more expensive comperable sized compressors I would stick with this ETQ hands down!

Average Reviews:

I'm strongly considering buying this item, sadly not from amazon because their price is MUCH higher than places such as tsc. Anyway, one of the big reason for my decision to buy this unit is the company IR, IR is basically air compressors, but now I'm much more doubtful based on a customer review for tyhis item that's apparently listed as another product. Here is that gentleman's story in full -not a very good job IR!
- Ingersoll Rand Gas Portable Air Compressor - 5.5 HP, 11.8 CFM At 90 PSI, Model# SS3J5.5GHWB
The Northern Tool company is great in itself, transaction went through cleanly and quickly and the compressor was soon on its way to my home through freight shipping. Ordered a few other tools along with the compressor and those got to my house quickly and at an excellent price. But then when the nightmare began.
I received my air compressor sometime around mid june and broke the engine in as per manufacturer instructions. First day out on the job I ran it for about 10 minutes and it broke down! cost me 200 dollars in lost wages that day!
I called Ingersoll-Rand customer service. After waiting about 20 minutes to actually talk to someone they told me (in a quite rude manner) that I should take it to a specialized certified mechanic in town that fixes all of their products and that it wasnt a problem with the factory.
I took it to the mechanic they had referred me to only to find out they were not an Ingersoll-Rand service center! IR had revoked his certification because he wasnt meeting some kind of quota set by IR!
I called IR back to confirm the place and they told me not to go to the mechanic they had referred me to earlier, instead to go 150 miles south to a shop in Los Angeles! I, rather annoyed, reminded them that I was loosing money every day this machine was down and that I expected better service from them and better quality of product. Well they basicly told me I wasnt important and told me I had no choice but to take it down to Los Angeles or try to fix it myself.
Well I couldnt wait. I took the compressor apart and found out that some numbnut at the factory did not properly tighten the screws on the flywheels that connect the engine to the compressor pump. As a matter of fact it didnt even have the square key thats designed to hold the wheel in place! The wheel on the engine side had been stripped to the point where it was unusable.
Once again I called them to find out if the parts I could order to get this thing up and running again would be covered under warranty, and they told me since I took it apart it was no longer under warranty and that I was up the creek without a paddle.
50 dollars in parts later I had it up and running and I was making money again.
Since then the compressor has been excellent. It has not failed since I fixed it and it has a higher CFM per PSI than other compressors in its price range, and the Honda engine is one of the best and most reliable on the market right now. In all honesty I love this compressor but IRs customer service left a bad taste in my mouth.
Would I recommend this compressor? Yes, just make sure all the parts are tightened and in place becore you start it for the first time, especially the flywheels.
Am I happy with Ingersoll-Rand? Heck no. If push came to shove I will probably buy an Emglo or Dewalt compressor next time.

Campbell Hausfeld HV2500 58 CFM Fine Finish HVLP Paint Sprayer Review

Campbell Hausfeld HV2500 58 CFM Fine Finish HVLP Paint Sprayer

I've had this unit for a couple of years now...and in short it's priced fairly. Not too great but not too bad. It got me started with HVLP. It just does not have enough power for shooting any thick (even kinda thick) finish. If you just want to shoot waterborne poly it works fine.
I wanted to shoot paint and oil based poly. For paint, forget it. Even with the heavy needle it just shoots splatter. For oil based poly it can't shoot a smooth even finish. With the heavy needle in it you get orange peel.
It was a good intro machine for me, but I ended up going for the top end
Accuspray on the second go round. Triple the price but you get professional results (why waste your time spraying if you get sub-par results?) and 3M's PPS which makes clean up a breeze. You know it's hard to justify the price for an expensive unit but think how many hours you have into your project. Why risk an average finish on it.

Campbell Hausfeld WG2060 90 Amp MIG/Flux Versa-Arc Welder Review

I had just bought a lower priced model CH welder at Walmart the week prior when I saw this model here on Amazon. I was not looking for an upgraded model like this to weld Aluminum, etc. but the Amazon coupon offer (at the time) made it too temping.
The free shipping was very fast via FedEx ground and arrived well padded and perfect.
I tried it out on some scrap metal and it worked well. The tension control needs to be played with a bit to get a perfect feed but other than that it's great. The four heat settings make welding the right materials a snap. You don't need a 20A circuit per se, but to use heat setting 4 for any length of time you will.
I asked my cousin, aka Big Country (a senior welder), to give me his thoughts and he said it could not have been beat for the dollar and that it was "nice!"

Campbell Hausfeld VT6275 15 Amp 3.2-Horsepower 60-Gallon Oiled Vertical Compressor Review

I just received my unit several days ago. It was purchased to replace an aging Sears 2 HP compressor, which had mysteriously turned itself on during the night (even though the switch was Off!) and kept running, overheating and filling my home with oily smoke.
The purchase and delivery experience was great. I got the free shipping, and was expecting this would take 2-3 weeks on the slow train. I was surprised to get a call from the freight company two days after I ordered it, asking when I wanted it delivered. It arrived in perfect condition.
True to market hype, the 6.5 HP rating advertised is actually an overstatement. The label on the unit says it is a 3.2 HP, and that makes sense given the current draw. A true 6.5 HP unit would require a 30-50A circuit, like my Delta 5HP Unisaw. But this unit meets my needs at a good price.
Campbell Hausfeld makes this identical unit for a lot of other manufacturers... you'll notice different paint colors, but it's the same unit. Surprisingly, some other manufacturers charge more... as far as I can tell only the paint color and brand sticker is different. Buy this one and save yourself some money.
A downside over some of the cheaper units is that you'll need to provide your own electrical cord, air regulator and plumbing from the tank. I purchased Campbell Hausfeld's vertical compressor mount kit direct from their website for about $11. It comes with rubber and metal plates, as well as lag screws and lag shields to safely mount the unit to the floor. I've also purchased a flexible pipe to make the connection from the compressor tank (after a ball shutoff valve) to the rest of the plumbing in my system.
The cast iron compressor pump is definitely quieter than my old aluminum one was. The unit operates very smoothly and relatively quietly for a compressor, but it's still noisy.
I'll submit an update after I've used the unit for a while, but so far, so good.
