Honeywell HM512WTHX9 WIRELESS TrueSteam 12Ga Humidifier Review

I am unhappy with this unit. I've had it for about two years. I live in an older house so the construction is not very tight. An HVAC servicer recommended this 12 gallon Honeywell because our flow-through units were not doing the job and I was uncomfortable with the amount of water they wasted. It was a mistake. The Honeywell barely gets the humidity up a few percent, my winter electricity bills are almost as high as they are when we run the A/C in the summer, and the mineral buildup makes the unit a pain to maintain. The mineral buildup gets stuck in places that are nearly impossible to clean out and keeps the humidifier from operating. After getting persistent "clean tank" errors today, I finally got the humidifier to work by spending two hours picking pieces of mineral out of a closed section of the reservoir with a screwdriver. I had my installer reinstall my old flow-through units and now I basically use the Honeywell as a very expensive supplement. If your house is very tightly constructed you may have a different experience, but if I had to do it again I wouldn't have bought this product.

Honeywell HM509H8908 TrueSTEAM 9 Gal Humidifier w/H8908 Review

I installed this item in less than a day with a drill, 1 3/4 inch hole saw (rated for metal), wire cutters / strippers, pliers, nut drivers, screw driver with Torx bit, tubing cutter, brazing torch, solder, solder paste, sandpaper and a few other hand tools.
Having a down-draft HVAC and a slab foundation, I needed to install the control unit remotely from the HVAC supply thus I purchased the 10 foot remote option, installed the control on the blower chamber (which is above the furnace and ac coil), then installed the remote steam outlet between the furnace and ac coil below the control unit. Having installed the remote steam outlet below the control unit, "steam rated" t-fittings and p-traps were required as per Honeywell documentation (and common sense). Unfortunately, Honeywell does not offer "steam rated" t-fittings or p-traps as part of the high priced remote installation package ($150.00 plus for a plastic nozzle, 10 feet of insulated automotive radiator hose, two hose clamps, a few brackets and a few sheet metal screws), nor did any plumbing supply or "licensed installer" in my area or on the web, thus I made my own from 1/2 inch copper tubing, elbows, unions and t-fittings purchased from the local hardware chain for around $10. You will need a brazing torch, solder, flux, etc., to construct one, but it is easy.
I am not at all happy with Honeywell customer service, as they would not provide any technical information regarding return vs. supply installation, "steam rated" components, etc., unless I was a "licensed installer". I simply wanted to know if it was acceptable to install the unit in the return air system since, as previously noted, I have a down draft HVAC and a slab foundation, thus there is no access to the supply side. Ultimately, I had to rely on common sense and an understanding of summer humidity in Oklahoma; passing steam over the ac coil in winter would be no different than passing Oklahoma humidity over the ac coil in summer, thus installing the remote nozzle in the space between the furnace and ac coil should not present a problem.
One last note; the schematic for the "recommended" air flow detector may lead one to believe that the "C" wire between the HVAC and the TrueSteam is not required if you decide not to install the "recommended" air flow detector. The "C" wire IS required regardless of the installation of the air flow detector.
In summary, easy to install, but very, very low marks for Honeywell's pathetic customer service.
As a final note, the last "licensed installer" as recommended by Honeywell installed a whole house humidifier in my home that ended up costing me $3700.00 in damages. He wired the system to come on when the blower was on, and neglected to consider whether or not the AC or HEATER was on, thus the unit continually streamed moisture into the HVAC in the summer months. The result was standing, rotting water in the supply ducts. The entire HVAC had to be replaced at my expense since he filed bankruptcy. I won't be calling Honeywell for technical advice, and I advise anyone installing this system to do the same.

HM512DG115 Review

I was tired of the usual dry air in the house during Winter and the static shocks associated with it. Furthermore, the stand alone humidifier was a pain in the neck to always fill with water and clean and it wasn't up to the task of making the house comfortable anyway! So I looked into the whole house humidifier. I originally purchased a different whole house humidifier but I found out that there just wasn't enough room on the furnace to mount it. I did more research and found the TrueSteam humidifier could be mounted up to 10 feet away from the furnace (20 feet with optional accessory) so I went with the largest unit (the 12 gallon) with the true IAQ control. It included everything needed to set up the humidifier, including a very nice thermostat/humidistat unit. I got the largest unit because I wanted to make sure I had adequate supply of moisture. I have about 2500 square feet of space to humidify and the house is fairly old.
I'm just a regular do it yourselfer with no training in HVAC systems so I was a little nervous about setting the system up myself. It was not too difficult though. The humidifier itself was fairly easy to set up. As they say, you only have to drill a hole into the supply side of the furnace. Tapping into the water line was easy. Switching out the thermostat was not too bad but it did require running a new set of wires which ended up being the most difficult part of the process. Then it was just a matter of figuring out which wires connect to where. I made sure I understood how my old heat pump thermostat was wired before I started and the wiring ended up being easy to deal with also.
Unfortunately, when I started up the system something was wrong. After a lot of troubleshooting, I figured out the TrueSteam unit did not work! I contacted the company and they sent out a new one right away and paid for return shipping. Then I simply substituted the new one for the old one and it worked great!
I have gone through a whole Winter season now. The new thermostat allows for fine tuning the humidity to your house to prevent condensation on your windows. All that works great. The house was very comfortable the whole Winter. No electric shocks! No more dry sinuses!
A very nice feature of the unit is that it drains water from the tank when it's not being used to help keep the tank clean. I just did my post season tank cleaning and I did find sediments at the bottom of the tank. They were easy to rinse out. Now my unit is ready for next Winter!
