I ordered and received my new Powermatic 60B jointer after comparing various models. I selected the Powermatic 60B based on price, features and Powermatic's reputation for quality.
The jointer I received was shipped in two packages, the first contained the base and motor, while the second contained the jointer bed, fence and cutterhead. The outer packaging used for the jointer bed consists of very thin plywood which was crushed in several places and in very bad shape overall. Fortunately there did not seem to be any obvious damage to the unit, however I believe this packaging is inadequate for its 300 lb contents.
Setup of the jointer was fairly straightforward however after squaring the fence to the infeed table, and checking against the outfeed table it was apparent that the infeed and outfeed tables were not coplanar. This was remedied by shimming the outfeed table and resetting all the knives such that they were parallel to the newly shimmed outfeed table. This took several hours and I was somewhat disappointed at having to do this with a new Powermatic jointer. The only upside is that I now have a better understanding of how to adjust the jointer bed and the knives.
After completing the setup and recalibration, I ran some test cuts and I am generally pleased with the results. The cuts are very smooth and accurate. The motor seems sufficiently powerful and reasonably smooth. The bed and fence seem very solid.
I did not have access to a jointer previously, so the new jointer is a great addition to the shop. I think the performance of the machine is good, however I believe there are some quality control issues that need to be resolved.

Featuring one of the longest beds available on the market, the Powermatic 60B Eight-Inch Jointer provides plenty of work piece support. This jointer is designed to make the smoothest cuts, even in hard materials like rough oak or maple. Also, it boasts sturdy, stable cast-iron and steel construction for optimum durability and vibration-free performance.
Extra Length for Longer BoardsTo accommodate especially long boards and provide plenty of space to work, the Powermatic 60B includes 73-inch-long adjustable in-feed and out-feed tables mounted on dovetailed ways for extra stability.
Powerful, Precise CuttingA controlled chip cutter-head--a Powermatic exclusive with three high-speed, heat-treated M-2 steel knives--spins at 7,000 RPM, makes 21,000 cuts per minute, and reduces the chance of kickback.
Additionally, an extra long rest on the in-feed table is ideal for rabbeting.
When absolute precision is necessary, there's a fine/quick adjustment lever on the in-feed table.
Robust Two-Horsepower Motor and Non-Slip V-Belt DriveThe Powermatic 60B owes its robust performance to a two-horsepower, one-Ph, 230-volt motor and a non-slip v-belt drive for dependable operation.
For protection and longer life, the drive, motor, and switch are all completely enclosed in the sheet metal stand. A dust collection adaptor with four-inch port helps to control the amount of dirt and debris in the shop.
Center-Mounted FenceThe center mounted swiveling fence offers positive stops at 45 degrees left and right, and a plunger-type lock at 90 degrees. At the same time, a positive hold-down clamp prevents the fence from slipping.
Dimensions and Warranty InformationThe Powermatic 60B measures 26 x 38 x 73 inches (W x H x D), weighs 482 pounds, and is backed by a five-year warranty.
What's in the BoxOne 60B Jointer; one jointer stand with motor; one door; one dust chute; one table and fence assembly; one drive belt; one belt guard; one cutter-head guard; two push pads; one hardware bag; one knife setting gauge; manual; and warranty card.

Palmgren 32803 83 Rotary Cross 8.0-Inch Top Slide Table Review

Palmgren 32803 83 Rotary Cross 8.0-Inch Top Slide Table

We received the rotary cross slide table and were surprised by the age of the table. Although it is still in its original packaging, it is not the current model. My guess is that it is 15+ years old. The x and y movements are hard due to the age (it takes two hands). The unit will have to be disassembled, cleaned and lubricated. See the "customer image" that I uploaded for the actual picture of the unit.

Powermatic PM2800 1792800 18-Inch Variable Speed Drill Press Review

Powermatic PM2800 1792800 18-Inch Variable Speed Drill Press
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First the Pros:
I have always looked on with envy when some of my woodworking friends show off their latest Powermatic tool and so recently when I decided to upgrade my much older drill press, I gulped a couple of times when I saw the price tag on the Powermatic PM2800 but finally convinced myself that I had to have it. Without a doubt it is a feature loaded superbly crafted drill press. The Morse 5/8" chuck, the 1 HP motor, the laser cross hair, the large expandable work surface and the variable speed control with the LED spindle speed readout were features that were lacking on the older press and after you experiences how convenient these are you can't help wondering how you ever got along without them.
The cons:
That said, there were a couple of things that left me with a less than satisfied feeling that this may just not be the drill press for me. Let me explain...I estimate that about 25% of the time I use a drill press for metal work as opposed to woodwork. When doing the metalwork I use a machinist vice that I clamp in place on the drill press table and the table on the Powermatic is not designed to accommodate this vise. The other problem is the lowest speed available is 400 RPM and I need to have 300RPM or less when drilling into steel. I did manage to come up with a method to attach the vice to the table using the T-slots but I don't know of any way that I can overcome the lack of a lower speed. Of course none of this detracts from the high quality of this tool. In my desire to acquire my first Powermatic I failed to consider all the ways I use a drill press So I guess I'll just keep the old drill press for my metal work.

Buying a lathe it one of the hardest decisions you will make in putting a shop together. The possibilities are endless, and, as you move up the price curve the cost of a misjudgment can get terrifying. Unless you are willing to settle for a mini-lathe (Jet makes several good lathes in that category as well) the bigger a lathe you can buy (up to a limit) the happier you will be in the long run.
The 1642, right in the middle of the price range can turn up to a 16" inch diameter bowl and up to 40+ inches in length - in other words, a small log - is one possibility you should seriously consider. At 400+ pounds it is solid enough to dampen vibration without taking a crew to assemble or move it. With a 1-1/2 horsepower motor it has enough power to do just about everything you might want to do.
Spindle speed is controlled by a two-position belt drive (0 - 1700 rpm or 0 - 3200 rpm) and is continuously variable over those ranges. While variable speed isn't a necessity, it's amazing how quickly you learn to depend on the ability to change speed as you turn. This is a superior piece of equipment and to get something better you would have to spend at least twice as much.
There are exactly two things I don't like about this lathe. One is trivial, I would have likes an optional hand turning wheel instead of having to grab a cylindrical turning bar to turn the work about manually. This is only a problem with pieces that are too small to grab onto - like pen mandrels. The other issue is that, to turn a bowl over 16" you have to run the head to the other end of the lathe, rather than turn it in place. This means the lathe takes up a bit more space and is slightly less convenient. But if you are working in that size range you probably should be looking at a more specialized tool.
I would rate this a best buy for the amateur through semi-professional woodshop. I've been using one for a while now, and I've had no reason to regret the decision. Keep in mind that, whatever lathe you buy, your next really big expense will be equipping it with all the neat gadgets that make woodturning a world of it's own.

Offering a one-inch swing over the bench and 42-inch capacity between centers, the JET 708359 JWL-1642EVS Woodworking Lathe, 115-Volt 1 Phase is ideal for home shop use. Boasting the versatility of a sliding headstock, electronic variable speed, and the necessary capacity for large projects, the JET JWL-1642EVS is a great lathe for beginning and serious craftspeople alike.
The multi ball bearing live center and screw on cone attachment make turning projects with a center hole easier and safer. The strong, three phase motor ennsures plenty of power for a wide range of projects.Three-Phase Motor with Electronic Inverter for Powerful PerformanceThe JWL-1642EVS comes equipped with a 1-1/2HP, three phase, 115-volt motor for shops that do not have 220-volt power available. An electronic inverter does all the work to convert from the "1 phase" to "3 phase." The inverter also provides the ability to vary the frequency of the motor, which in turn allows for variable speed.
Cast-Iron Castings for Stability and Smooth OperationBased on heavy-duty iron castings, the JWL-1642EVS provides long-term accuracy and smooth, vibration-free operation. Even the legs are made from an iron casting and include cast-in supports and adjustable pads at each foot to ensure a solid stance on uneven surfaces. With these legs, the spindle (center) height is a comfortable 44.5 inches above the floor.
The JWL-1642EVS headstock is also made from a massive iron casting that provides rigid support for the 1-1/2 HP, variable speed motor(0 to 3,200 RPM), and the high-strength spindle. After machining, the headstock is fitted with large diameter, high-quality ball bearings that support the precision-machined spindle for reliable performance.
Large-Diameter Spindle with Built-in Indexing for Drilling, Fluting, and MoreThe large-diameter spindle has a 1.25 x 8 threads-per-inch nose that supports the large chucks typically used with this type of lathe. Additionally, the outboard end of the spindle is fitted with a barrel-type grip for turning the spindle by hand. The spindle also has internal indexing built in that allows you to lock it in 36 positions (or 10-degree increments) for drilling, fluting, grooving, and other operations.
For added convenience, the spindle is indexed with a screw-in pin provided with the lathe. There's also a push-button spindle lock on the front of the headstock for a simple, tool-free way to temporarily lock the spindle when you install or remove the faceplate, chuck, or other screw-on accessories.
Heavy-Gauge Wire Guard for SafetyA special mount on the rear of the headstock accepts a heavy-gauge wire guard (included), and a spring-loaded pin indexes the guard up or down to make mounting and removing turned objects easy. This guard also serves as a protective shield between the work and the operator, when large chips and chunks generated while turning blanks can turn into dangerous projectiles.
User-Friendly Controls, LED, and Toggle SwitchDesigned to be user-friendly, the JWL-1642EVS features dial-operated, infinite speed controls conveniently located on the front of the headstock. A large digital LED readout makes monitoring the spindle speed easy and very accurate, while the toggle switch on the front panel allows selecting forward and reverse spindle directions. Finally, a large-diameter pull on/push off button (also on the front panel) is easily accessible no matter your operating position.
Large Tailstock for StabilityThe JWL-1642EVS has a large tailstock with the mass and wide base to generate the stability you need. The large ram has a full four-inch travel, operated by an easy-to-turn, five-inch diameter handwheel fitted with a spinner handle, the popular #2 Morse taper, and a 3/8-inch diameter through hole, which is convenient for drilling lamp bases. Finally, like the tool-rest base, a large handle makes it easy to lock the tailstock securely in place.
Ball bearing Live Center and Cast Iron Tool Rest Base for VersatilityThe JWL-1642EVS comes with a high-end, multi-row ball bearing live center with a screw-on, large-diameter cone for projects like peppermills and boxes, and a cast-iron tool-rest base designed to be very rigid, easy to position, and thanks to its comfortably long handle, very easy to lock in position.
The JWL-1642EVS measures 29 x 28 x 59 inches (WxHxL), weighs 410 pounds, and is covered by a five-year warranty.

This is an outstanding piece of woodworking machinery. Other than a few unclear illustrations, I had no assembly issues & was able to get it set up, rewired for 220V, and dialed-in by myself in a few hours. It's heavy, but it was not very hard getting the saw onto the stand alone. I also installed the riser block to increase resaw capacity which I highly recommend. The upper arm of the saw is heavy & hard to get a good place to get a grip, so it took a little muscling to get the riser block installed. "Goof-Off" (available in local home centers & hardware stores) worked well to remove the anti-rust shipping coating on the tables. As you might expect, the "included" blade is junk.
I seriously considered the Laguna 14SE but could not justify the additional $400-500. I admit that I probably over research before buying machines for my shop. Check out the Delta, Grizzly, Jet, Bridgewood, and others. On the Powermatic, the fit & finish is way above the competition. Power, weight of castings, weight/design of flywheels... the list goes on and the Powermatic gets the points - this is a top choice among 14" bandsaws.
Power is NOT an issue. The Baldor motor is a tank. It runs very quietly - the sound makes you realize that you're about to operate a real piece of equipment. Roller blade guides take a little setting up when you change blades, guard height, etc. but they work very well. Dust collection is also very good. Fence is dead on accurate and tables are machined to near perfection. Carter quick tension release is fantastic! Chip blower works as it should.
As mentioned by another reviewer, if you rewire the motor to 220V you will need a 220V bulb... Philips 50A RS 250V available at mscdirect.com
The delivery/setup/operation of this machine has been a five star experience! THANKS to Amazon/ToolCrib, ABF Freight Systems & The WMH group for fine service and a fine product!
After having just pattern cut 10/4 white oak like it was 3/4" pine, a simple blade change/rentensioning for a Woodslicer resaw blade means it's time to go and make more 10" wide cherry into 1/32" veneer slices!
Go for the "gold standard." Buy it, you'll be happy you did.

With an extra large, two-piece cast-iron table and balanced nine-spoke cast-iron wheel, the Powermatic PWBS-14CS 14-Inch Woodworking Band Saw is a capable, user-friendly machine ideal for professional woodworkers and hobbyists. Its rugged design offers uncompromising accuracy and durability; while a host of innovative features let users tackle a range of heavy-duty jobs with precision and control.
Solid, Sturdy Backbone for Vibration-Free OperationA huge iron casting provides a solid foundation that keeps the PWBS-14CS rigid and vibration free. The heavy-gauge, steel base cabinet adds to the unit's overall stability and provides a solid,vibration-absorbing base for the motor. Because dust collection does not pass through the base cabinet, its interior remains virtually dust free, reducing routine maintenance while enhancing the long life of the motor and drive belt.
To help improve visibility and the air quality of your shop, the PWBS-14CS features a four-inch diameterport cast into the lower housing, directly below the blade, for effective dust evacuation. And tokeep the cut line clearly visible, an integral air pump supplies pressurized air to an adjustable nozzleattached to the upper blade guide, resulting in a chip blower that provides a clear line.
Extra-Large Work TableTo effectively handle projects both big and small, the PWBS-14CS features an extra-large,two piece cast iron table with a tilting section measuring 15.0 x 15.0 inches and a fixedextension measuring 15.0 x 5.0 inches for a total working surface area of 15.0 x 20.0 inches.
Optimum Power and DriveThe PWBS-14CS is powered by a one and one-half-horsepower TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled)industrial-style motor that comes wired for 115-volt operation, but can be converted to 230 volts. The motor power is delivered through a set of precision-machined multi-groove pulleys that aredriven by a poly-V drive belt system, known for its smooth, efficient transmission of power withvery little temperature buildup.
For their part, the cast-iron drive wheels are fully machined, painted, and fitted with high quality tires and then dynamically balanced to ensure smooth operation.
Easy AdjustmentsWith the PWBS-14CS, adjustments are never a problem, due to the blade width markings on thetensioning block for blade widths from one-eighth- to three-quarter-inch. The infiniteadjusting system also lets users dial in the correct tension for specialty blades that mayrequire non-standard tension settings.
This model comes with the legendary, Carter quick-release handle assembly that features three positions:full tension, relaxed tension, and full release. Users can move the Carter between all three positionswithout losing the tension setting, potentially lengthening the life of the blade.
User-Friendly FeaturesThe PWBS-14CS also includes an exclusive design, quick-release, precision T-square-style rip fence withfour-inch re-saw attachment; 60-watt adjustable lamp (bulb not included) built into the body to providedirect light on blade and work piece while cutting; and a full six-inch under-guide capacity with 13-1/2-inch width capacity.

Powermatic 1791310 PM701 3/4 Horsepower Bench Mortiser Review

Powermatic 1791310 PM701 3/4 Horsepower Bench Mortiser

I can not rave enough about Amazon's service or the Powermatic 701 Mortising Machine.
I ordered this machine on March 15 and the web site reflected a new product that was on backorder.
Amazon's web site also told me the machine would be shipped and delivered between April 20 and May 8th. It arrived on the 14th of April in excellent condition.
The price with one of Amazon's special sale days, the supersavor shipping, and no sales tax made this machine very very competitive with the $200-$300 priced machines.
Six stars for Amazon.com!!!
This is one massive bench top machine. I use to own a Jet, which was a nice servicable little machine for the price, but it was very basic with a very basic table made of MDF.

I debated between the higher end Delta, the General Tilting Table Mortiser, and the Powermatic 701. I went with the Powermatic as I do not make slat back chairs and therefore did not need to have the tilting feature.
The Powermatic 701, while not made in the USA, is made in Taiwan. The workmanship is very good. The motor runs smoothly and the guides for raising the head and moving the table operate smoothly.
Speaking of the motor, it is 3/4 horsepower compared to the 1/2 horsepower that powers the others.
This machine did not bog down in any wood I have been able to test since receiving it.
The spacer fitting for the chisel and auger is a nice touch as is the round tool rest attached to the back of the machine for your other chisels. It comes with a polishing hone already attached, too!
It does require a metric hex wrench and 10mm metric wrench(and it would be nice if Powermatic would provide them with the machine)but most do-it-your-selfers usually have a set of metric and imperial wrenches, anyway.
If there is a nit to pick, the paint finish was so-so. It does not matter to me as I bought the machine to make mortises, and this machine does that with a vengence!
I also like the ability to open the one piece cowl all the way in order to install the chisel and auger. Much more access area than the General or the Delta. The Powermatic uses a magnet to hold the cowl closed. The cowl opens like the hood on a Corvette; You have lots of room to access the chuck and make your adjustments.
Runout on the chuck was almost non-existent, exceeding anything needed for wordworking.
The machine has a solid feel and does not move due to its almost 90+ pounds of cast Iron and steel.
The handle is reversible to the left side of the machine for southpaws.
The fence hold-down is reversible for larger boards.
The table rollers are a great addition which allows you to keep the board firmly against the fence, but immediately move it right or left to keep cutting your mortise.
(Rockler sells a similar MDF setup for the Jet Mortiser, but it is not as nice nor is it cheap!)
