Makita BO6040 6.6 Amp 6-Inch Random Orbit Variable Speed Sander Review

When I purchased the Makita B06040 sander a few months ago, I was initially quite pleased with it's performance. In the random orbit mode it is comperable to similar 6" models from other manufacturers, but in the random orbit plus rotary mode this thing could really remove material fast, without the swirl marks from a rotary only sander. After a few weeks of use, the "stop ring" which is engaged to produce the rotary motion with random orbit failed, and the sander is now random orbit only. In addition, use in the rotary mode on oak produced enough heat to literally melt the hook and loop fasteners on the sanding pad. The sander will only function if you start it with the paper engaged to the work piece (otherwise it just flies off like a 6" frizbee). I have returned it to the local Makita service center for repairs, but have not received it back yet.

This variable speed random orbit sander from Makita has a two-mode switch for random orbit action (finish sanding) and random orbit with forced rotation (aggressive sanding and polishing). Its superior engineering and design reduce vibration by 20 percent, and noise levels almost two to one over the competition. This model offers a variable speed control dial (1,600-5,800 opm; 180-670 rpm) for various applications. The compact tool height of just 5-3/16 inches increases efficiency and maneuverability, and the small diameter barrel grip gives you optimum comfort and control. The BO6040 uses convenient hook-and-loop abrasive sanding discs and accessories.

Fein MSF636-1 3.7 Amp 6-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Vacuum Adaptor Review

I just got this sander, and have been able to use it on some red oak. By far this is the best ROS I have ever used - and I have many hours logged with ROS. This sander can be very aggressive, but it is very easy to control, and gives very precise action. I put most of my 220 lbs. on it and it didn't chock for a second. There was almost no vibration, and my hands did not tingle after a few hours of use. Also, I have never seen better dust extraction. PERIOD!
Now to why it did not get 5 stars from me.
1) No case. At this price you think you would get a case.
2) Poor doccumentation. Mine came with two manuals. Both were safety oriented, and not use or operation oriented.
3) The dust collection outlet is propietary. It is an odd shaped rectange, forcing you to use a hard to find Fein adapter, or make one yourself.
4) Cost.
However, because of the preformance of this unit, I mostly have been able to overlook these problems. I am thinking of buying their 8" model next.

Great Product!
I don't know what product "Jonman x484" is talking about, but it can't be the Orbit Sander. I have been involved in woodworking for over 20 years and own a variety of Bosch tools. My latest purchase was the Orbit Sander to cut down on "sanding" time, and the product lives up to expectations. The two speeds allows you to "rough" sand and "finish" sand without changing tools. It is also very comfortable to use, almost like it was made for my hands. Also, once again, Bosch included a place for the wrench in the design of this tool. I love that feature! No more looking around for the right wrench to change out pads. The only negative is I feel that they should include a vacuum attachment as a bonus.

The 1250DEVS multiple-purpose sander from Bosch has two sanding modes: random orbit mode for normal stock removal or fine finishing, and an aggressive -InchTurbo-Inch drive eccentric orbit mode that operates at five times the regular rate, in order to remove rougher stock. Its simple sanding mode selector switch quickly changes back and forth between the two modes, as your projects require it -- and the powerful 6.5 amp variable speed motor (3,100 to 6,650 opm) matches the tool's speed to the task, for a smooth result on all surfaces. This model is crammed with great convenience and power features, including a soft start function that tones down the start-up torque and a variable speed dial that makes it extra easy to match your working speed to the project. It also has Constant Response circuitry that maintains the pad speed under heavy loads while simultaneously protecting against overloads, and an integral pad dampening system to help prevent swirl marks -- plus a passive dust collection system (vacuum and hoses required, available by Bosch). The 1250DEVS uses 6-hole, 6-inch hook-and-loop discs. This kit includes a dust tube, soft backing pad, a left or right-hand auxiliary handle, one sanding disc, and a pad wrench (5mm) that stores on-board.
