As a test the elderly recipient of this generator feebly pulled the cord to start the motor. At first it looked pointless as the effort failed to build up any momentum. The motor turned about one and a half strokes, but incredibly, the motor fired up on the second tug. The electric start worked fine, but if the battery happens to lose too much charge, starting the motor by hand proves easy enough. It's also possible to jump start it just like a car.
Delivery requires coördinating with a shipping company that only hands over the product to a warm body. For the customer accustomed to finding items dropped off at the stoop, that sucks. It also conflicts with having the item sent to a site other than home. The driver had no qualms, though, about loading the generator onto the back of a pick-up which was nice. Still, instead of waiting for a delivery which I had to transfer to another location,I could have just as easily bought a generator at the hardware store. Amazon used to conveniently leave items for me where ever I needed them delivered (Kansas, Michigan, Virginia). Now, I have to take time off from work to meet a trucker and complete the delivery myself. Gifts don't arrive as a welcome surprise anymore because the recipients have to go through the same rigamarole.
It has ample 120 volt receptacles to plug portable GFCI's into for running heavy duty extension cords through the house. This'll provide some immediate comfort while the electrician installs a transfer switch, a 30 amp inlet and sub-panel. He or she will also piece together a 10-4 SO extension cord to connect between the generator's 220 volt outlet and the sub-panel's inlet.
Don't scrimp on the budget for the set up with the transfer switch. It makes plugging in a generator convenient and safe. You can hook up the generator yourself any time you want to later.
--tick-tock--October 2008, it still runs. It has only a few hours running time, though. A generator mechanic pointed out that these cheap products have short lives without regular attention, so change that oil! $700 genny, good deal, would buy from same again.

(More customer reviews)After my transfer box came in, I was able to make final plans for my particular needs. I did not need any of the available 230 volt transfer breakers, so I removed them and replaced them with additional 115 volt circuits. My final count is 4, 20 amp breakers, and 6, 15 amp breakers. I was able to do this with locally available parts. I added the two additional 115 volt circuits that were optional at that time and added the connection wires to run it with. My installation is as a flush mount next to the main entrance pannel. I also bought the flush mounting plate available. It has worked out just great. The most dificult part was the drilling of the 2 inch hole in the stud which mounted the main entrance. That was done using a right angle drive unit for my drill I bought for the installation. After all the circuits were tied in, I tested the installation for loading and ballance, and all worked well. I had run the freezer and the house fridge on the generator during the install. They were switched back over to the mains. I made up a 25 foot extension cord to connect the generator to the transfer pannel using #8 cableing. That's a bit of an overkill, but I'm happy knowing that will never be a weak link. The generator I am using with the system is a 6,500 /8,200 watt, 13 HP unit. It carried the load very well with all circuits on. I recommend this thransfer box for anyone needing a manual transfer box. It is neat as installed and works well. It went in in about 4 hours with two of us working on it that had never done this before. I suggest that anyone thinking about doing this go to the GenTran site and download the instruction sheet to review the installation instructions. You can plan better and avoid surprises better that way. Good Luck. I hope this is helpful.

(More customer reviews)We recently bought a 5000 watt generator to power essential home appliances--this is if and when a power outage should occur.
To make this convenient, we installed a Reliance transfer switch. (Note that the Amazon description is inaccurate in regard that the Reliance Kit 31406CRK is actually rated at 7500 watts).
We connected the switch to the house wiring right at the circuit box (as required). We found installation of the generator transfer switch to not at all be difficult (only a rudimentary knowledge of electrical circuitry is required).
When the electrical power from the grid is out, we can now keep essential appliances (well pump, refrigerator, and lights) in operation by running them off of the generator. The transfer switch allows connecting 4 house circuits at 120 volts, and 1 house circuit at 240 volts; or 6 house circuits at 120 volts.
As a side note, safe operation of sensitive electronic devices requires a clean power supply. Consequently, when running off of a generator, devices like TV's and computers should additionally be connected to a protected outlet. Ideally, the current should pass through a line power conditioner that has a voltage regulator. (Note that Tripp Lite sells a 600 watt line conditioner with voltage regulator for less than $100). Another good option for more safely operating electronic equipment when the grid is down would be through an DC-to-AC inverter.
All-in-all we find the 5000 watt generator combined with the Reliance transfer switch (the kit) to comprise an effective (yet inexpensive) system that can power most of our essential home appliances.
