I gave it three stars because of quality of build and design. There were no usable instructions although something called instructions was in the box. The quality of the materials is sub-par, all plastic. I feel like I have to be very easy when moving the vacuum around for fear of breaking it. The hose is very cheap and kinks at the neck easily. The attachment storage was not really designed at all. There are no good placements for attachments or the hose.
It does vacuum well and the noise level is not bad. Next time I will get a true commercial vac, not one that has a marketing label on it that says "industrial".

Festool CT 33 E 8.7 Gallon Dust Extractor Review

Festool CT 33 E 8.7 Gallon Dust Extractor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, maybe. But, undoubtedly, it is the greatest shop vacuum I have ever owned. I've been using mine for a year and it integrates seemlessly with all of Festool's tools. And it is quiet. It is several, maybe even 10 dB, quieter than other shop vacs making this a pleasure to use.
It has infinitely variable speed. The wheels will lock in case you don't want it to roll. The vacuum allows you to plug another tool into the vacuum and the vacuum will automatically start when you turn on the tool. This feature was the primary reason I purchased this vacuum and this alone justifies the high price. When sanding a large piece of furniture through several grits, it is *so* convenient.
The vacuum is wired at 20 amps because when a tool and a vacuum are going at full tilt it can pull a lot of electricity. However, it comes with a pigtail adapter to plug into the much more common 15 amp circuits. So of course, a circuit breaker might trip if you pull a lot of electricty.
There are two methods for collecting dust--paper bags and an optional plastic tub that is available as an accessory. I use both. The bags are great for dust and the tub works fine for rough construction debris.

I bought this vac when my old shop vac started spewing dust due to worn out filters and seals. I use this type of vac to clean pet hair, dust, sand and dirt from the hardwood and tile floors in my home. I didn't want to deal with a consumer quality vac that would lose efficiency as it filled with dirt.
1. The tank is stainless steel, but could be dented if you abuse it. I wouldn't drag it down the stairs by the hose. With proper care, it should last a lifetime. The handle and wheels are permanently attached to the unit, so it might be hard to invert the tank for cleaning purposes. The motor, cord, attached filter and top lid completely remove from the tank for cleaning.
2. The cord is plenty long enough for most homes, and the 12 foot hose is fantastic. You can reach ceiling fans without having to carry the vac up the ladder.
3. The wheels are sturdy, and make moving the vac very easy.
4. The motor is reasonably quiet (at least compared to my Sears unit), and sufficiently powerful to vacuum sand from the floor, through the 12 foot hose, and into the tank. Although the HP rating seems small, the motor is a two stage unit which much more efficient than the single stage units seen on cheaper vacs. Even after three days of cleaning a very dusty house, garage, and automobile (without emptying the dust bag), there was sufficient suction for efficient cleaning. I ran the unit from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM for three days, and didn't notice any heat problems or strange noises indicating that I was overtaxing the motor.
5. This unit comes with a paper filter, and I added vacuuum bags to eliminate any possible release of dust from the unit. The vac bags are a great idea. They protect the paper filter, keep the inside of the vac clean, and make for very easy cleanup. On the down side, they do prevent you from easily retrieving property that accidentally gets sucked into the vac.
6. The tools are pretty rugged, but not typical of the $400 industrial vacs that I've seen. This is probably a good thing since such tools are very heavy, bulky and hard to handle. The supplied tools will probably last for years.
Shop Vac's customer service was great (I called them with a number of questions), and they were nice enough to tell me that parts could be purchased at Wal-Mart (instead of having to order them from Shop Vac directly).
If you're going to be vacuuming an office, a small shop or a home, this vac will last a lifetime. I'm very happy with the purchase.

Ridgid RV2600B 16-Gallon 2-Stage Industrial Vacuum Review

Ridgid RV2600B 16-Gallon 2-Stage Industrial Vacuum
Average Reviews:

I was very disappointed with this shop vac. I always have several shop vacs in my shop and a couple on the job site. A year ago I purchased a Ridgid vac at Home Depot for $99. The top detaches and becomes a very good blower. This $99 vac has the most suction I have ever had with previous vacs, ShopVac, Craftsman, and others. No matter how much I paid for the other vacs the cheap Ridgid is the best one by far. The only other one that came close was a 25 year-old 2.5 hp Craftsman. (still in use) One of the vacs I use in my shop for dust collection recently died so I went shopping on amazon. I found this Ridgid 2-stage 11.5 amp industrial vac. I figured this one had to be good, reading the product description and the price. When it arrived by amazon's two-day prime shipping, (in two days) I was initially disappointed as it has a 1 7/8 inch hose. I'm sure I missed that in the product description, my bad. This size doesn't fit any tool dust collection hookups without buying an additonal hose. I took the vac out into my shop and put it to work. Are you kidding me? The tool hose on my wife's old Hoover upright has more suction. I tried to suck up some small brads along with dust off my work table. I had to take the brush off the end and place the hose directly over the nail to pick it up. My other vacs would grab it from 4-5" away. If you want to buy a good vac, look for the Ridgid that has the detachable blower. One third the price and 10 times the suction. Sorry Ridgid, but this vac works good for cleaning out a car, but it has no place in a work shop or on a job site.

Shop-Vac 9609910 14-Gallon 6.5 HP Industrial Stainless Steel Pump Wet/Dry Vacuum Review

I think there are two areas that are important in a shop vacuum; its operational performance, and the overall design of the storage, tools, and how it all fits together. While this model has good performance, the overall design is quite poor. I am very disappointed that I paid nearly $300 for something that is no better than the $150 models at Lowe's and Home Depot. I expected good storage design based on all the included hoses and options.
The good: Very powerful, with both a very high airflow rate and very high total suction. A multitude of filter options lets you pick up anything. The filter bag keeps fine dust from escaping (cement, soot, plasterboard, etc) while the standard cartridge works great for typical construction cleanup. The hoses are very flexible and attach securely. Some others have springy/stiff hoses that are hard to work with and some pull out of the connector easily. The container is solid, wheels are smooth, cord is nice and long.
The bad: The storage part of the design seems to have been created by rabid monkeys. The cord loop ears are tiny, and positioned behind all of the tool storage. This means you have to remove the tools from the bin to use the cord wrap, then the tools don't fit well into the storage bin. The bin is too small to fit even the included tools, making it rather useless. The hose hanger just can't be used with the tool storage bin in place, so you'd have to remove the bin just to store the hose. Also there is only one hose hanger, for the 2.5" hose, while this kit includes a 1.25" hose also. I guess it doesn't matter since the hanger is useless.
Overall this is just poor design with no real reason. They could have put the bin on the front, leaving the cord and hose hangers accessible, or some other design option. I would not buy this item at even 50% off if given the choice again.

The vacuum has superior suction and is easily cleaned. The Tubes and tools are all extra cost accessories. This also has odd sized hose and fittings. There are no american made set of tools or hose that will fit this device. I was able to make adaptors from PVC to incorporate it into my existing 2" dust collector system.

Automatic Operation. The Fein 9-55-13 Turbo II 9 Gallon Wet/Dry Dust Extractor Vacuum features an automatic on-off switch. Plug your sander into the panel mounted outlet. When you turn your sander on, the vac starts automatically. When you shut your sander off, the vac continues to run for 3 seconds to clean the hose. Rugged Design. The Fein Turbo II is designed for heavy, continuous, industrial use. The Turbo II can handle power tools with inputs of 40 to 2000 watts (.3 to 19 amps). The powerful two- stage motor offers bypass cooling. This means that if the hose or filter become blocked, air will still cool the motor. Quiet. Producing a mere 57.8 dB (A) noise level at 3.5 feet, the Fein Turbo II is one of the quietest vacs available on the market today. Versatile. Depending on your requirements and the nature of materials you are working with, available filtering capabilities for this vacuum are, the 5 micron cloth bag, which is standard for this unit, the 1 micron pleaded filter cartridge, and the .3 HEPA filter cartridge, which are optional up grades. The vac can be used wet or dry. There is a large selection of accessories available.

Fein 9-20-24 Turbo I 6-Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum with Auto-Start Review

Fein 9-20-24 Turbo I 6-Gallon Wet/Dry Vacuum with Auto-Start
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The new version of the Fein Turbo II has some improvements that answer criticisms of the previous model, and it's more expensive. Fein added two additional casters, metal clips to hold the top to the base, the ability to change suction power by changing motor speed, and a drain plug to make it easy to get liquid out. It still comes without any accessories except for a nice long 16' 1-1/4" hose and a rubber adapter to mate the hose with to a Fein power tool dust outlet. Fein wants far too much money for its accessory tool set, IMHO. But a 2-1/4" Sears or Shop Vac hose will fit the inlet, and/or you can buy 3rd party attachments for the 1-1/4" hose that comes with the vacuum. If you're going to attach it to a sander or other power tool for dust extraction, it's a good idea to buy the stepped hose adapter Fein sells. It's available at Amazon for a reasonable price.
Why would anyone pay Fein this much for a shop vacuum? Two reasons: quiet operation and the onboard power outlet that turns on the vacuum when you turn on a power tool plugged into the outlet.
Quieter operation may not seem important until you hear the difference. As another reviewer says, a big old Sears shop vacuum sounds like the deck of an aircraft carrier during takeoff operations. You need hearing protection if you're going to run it for more than a minute or two. The Fein sounds like quiet household vacuum, but it has enough suction and capacity for a workshop. The advantage of the auxiliary power outlet is obvious if you use a vacuum to extract dust when you're using a sander or a miter saw. The vacuum turns on just when you need it and shuts off on its own when you turn off the power tool.
The Fein comes with a cloth filter that will capture particles down to 5 microns, which is probably marginally OK for dust generated by a miter saw, but not for handling fine dust from orbital sanding or if you vacuum up after sanding wallboard seams. Fein will sell you a cartridge filter for 1 micron particles or a HEPA cartridge filter that gets down to 0.3 microns. You can buy a Gore Clearstream HEPA filter - the "Ridgid-Sears Red" version -- at Amazon or at a home center for less than a third what Fein charges for theirs. Gore does not list the Fein as one of the vacuums its filters will fit. But it does. Just buy a 2-1/2" x 3/8 fully threaded carriage bolt, a 3/8" wing nut and a 3/8" nylon washer and screw the filter down snugly. You don't need a bag if you use a cartridge filter unless ou're vacuuming hazardous materials.
Barely five stars considering that Fein ought to include vacuum tools in the box, but this thing really delivers on "quiet," on power and on convenience.

The Fein vacuums / dust extractors are designed for heavy, continuous, industrial use, wet or dry. The improved, rugged anti-tipping design features a powerful 120volt two-stage motor that offers bypass cooling, ensuring a long motor life. Vacuum performance measuring at 90 to 99 inches of water lift means Fein dust extractors produce far greater suction than the competition, at an average of 60 decibels. All three models come with electronic variable suction control with LED indicator allowing for maximum performance, auto-start function, and integrated drain plug. Accessory filters are available that capture particles down to .3 micron (HePa). The Fein dust extractors when combined with Feins random orbit sanders are an integral part of Feins 98 dust-free sanding system. Plug your random orbit sanding system into a Fein dust extractor. The tools switch turns the dust extractor on and off and provides a ten second delay after shut off to clear the hose. Maximum performance can be achieved by adjusting the electronic variable suction control. Fein dust extractors handle power tools with inputs of 5 to 2000 watts (.05 to 18 amps).

Porter-Cable 7812 10-Gallon 1-1/2-Horsepower Tool-Start Wet/Dry Vacuum Review

I purchased the Fein 9-55-13 Turbo II last year and it kind of found a new home with a family member. Thought I would give the new Porter Cable 7812 a try. I was not disappointed at all with the Fein but just like trying new items. The 7812 has been a pleasant surprise so far. Like the on board storage brackets for the accessories and the auto shut-off feature that it has for water pick-up. The Fein has a little nicer hose and longer power cord. Both units have the same hose size. You should purchase the accessory kit and save your self some trouble finding attachments to fit if you need them. Both units have the on board outlet for auto-start while using a power tool. Porter Cable could do a nicer job with advertising its features especially on the Internet. Even a call to Porter Cable was not what one would expect. The literature I received over the fax was a brief one pager. The manual also could be a little better. Although its nice that they included an actual parts break down of the unit. You don't see that to much anymore. In addition to the paper bag that traps most of the dirt they have a car like pleated filter that is accessible from the top lid. Also there is a foam final filter on the topside of the unit. To help in cleaning of the pleated filter, a flip down lever is located on one side that when pulled will shake some of the dust build up off the bottom of the filter. Don't know how effective this will be in actual working conditions with a lot of dust build up. The best method is to remove the filter and wash it out and keep the bag changed. If you don't keep the air moving, you're not going to pick up much dust and dirt. Box has Made In Italy on the side. Between the Fein and Porter Cable I prefer the Porter Cable 7812. It's a nice well built unit.
