Troy-Bilt TB4218CC 42cc 2-cycle Gas Engine 18" Chain Saw Review

Bought this TroyBuilt used. Recently, we had a wet heavy snow and a lot of trees fell in the neighborhood. The neighbor's crabapple tree was mostly in my back yard so I asked if he had a chain saw. A few hours, he came back with a TroyBuilt chain saw and I cut up most of the tree branchs. He offered me the saw for $40.00 since it was running rough, I took it to a small engine shop for an overhaul. Cost me $67 for the rebuilt carb and a new chain.
The manual says MDT and the parts list says McCalloch. So it might be a party to corporate buyouts. Anyways, after filling the tank with gas/oil mix and chain lube, a 4 push prime and 4 pulls to get the gas mixture through the carb. A second 4 pulls got the engine started and idle for about 20 seconds.
Cut the branch to 12" rounds and hopefully, next fall, we'll have a nice fire in the fireplace.

I've always liked Echo products. Their engines have a lot of torque at the low end. I was also looking at Stihl, but I had a Stihl gas string trimmer that was a bear to start. The dealer assured me however that their saws start easily with the proper technique. So maybe that isn't an issue, however some of the reviews still mentioned that the Stihls were difficult to start at times. I also viewed a video of a Stihl saw cutting and it seemed very noisy. There was also another review showing the Echo to be very quiet compared to other saws. So anyway I settled on the Echo and am very pleased with the smoothness, quietiness and power of this saw. It is well balanced, fairly light, starts easily, burns clean, and cuts logs like butter. Of course at $260 it is not cheap, but worth it in my opinion.

I have always been a fan of Makita tools, especially their saw, so when I had to buy a chain saw I turned to Makita first. I read all the reviews on the UC4000, which is the older model of this saw, and saw nothing but awesome reviews. Close to 5 stars with over 50 reviews.
So I went ahead and purchased this saw, and boy am I glad I did. This saw cuts through wood like a knife through hot butter. It was effortless how easily this saw cut through a 8 inch diameter tree branch, this is one mean saw. I am used to using my dads Stihl 20inch FarmBoss and this saw didn't make me wish I was using that monster at all. If you need to fall some really huge trees in the deep woods get a big gas saw, but if your just using your saw to cut firewood, take down small/ medium trees, work around the house get this saw. Another thing that is so nice is that all you have to do is 1) put some bar/chain in it 2) Plug it in 3) Pull the trigger and its up and running, no pulling, mixing oil, checking spark plugs, flooding the engine. Just pull the trigger and go.
It is so easy to put this saw together and make adjustments on the fly because its totally tool-less, and that also makes clean up easier. A great feature. This saw may cost 2-3 times more than other electric chainsaws but if you want a tool that will last go ahead and spend the money. This saw will last much longer than 2-3 of the cheap saws and you will save yourself many headaches.

I have owned this saw for about three months now, and am amazed at how great this saw is. My Dad has 200 acres of wooded land, and all year long, I along with my family members get firewood from this. My siblings have different types of saws all 20" bars. They have Poulan, Mcculloch, Homelite, and Stihl. I put this saw to the test against these other guys and it wasn't even close! Plenty of power, lightweight, nice balance, and fairly quiet. These weren't small trees either, some were up in the 25" diameter range. By the end of the day, everybody was wanting to use mine. It just doesn't get any nicer than this one. I was able to get this particular model for 300 clams, and would pay twice as much to own it after using it. Believe me that I'm not using this just a couple times a year around the house. I get TONS of firewood and use this saw all year long, and will not be looking to get another saw for at least 5 years because of there great warranty. Thanks Echo for making my family jealous - now I'm not the black sheep anymore!UPDATE 6/22/09
WELL MY SAW HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR 2 MONTHS NOW, WITH A BLOWN TOP ENGINE. REPAIR MAN TOOK IT APART AND SENT PICTURES TO ECHO AND THEY SAID THAT I DID NOT USE THEIR OIL AND WRONG MIXTURE. AND NOW THEY ARE NOT GOING TO COVER IT. AS YOU CAN SEE IN MY REVIEW THAT I HAVE WORKED WITH ALL KINDS OF SAWS AND SMALL ENGINES, AND FOR THEM TO TELL ME THAT I DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT MIXTURE IS BS. THANKS ALOT ECHO FOR STICKING ME FOR $300 AND WIGGLING OUT OF IT, YOU HAD A SOLD PERSON HERE, BUT NOW I'M GOING TO DRAG YOU THROUGH THE MUD. BYE BYE ECHO - HELLO STIHL!!!!

I would give the saw an overall B- rating. The positve: It starts fairly easily if starting steps followed properly -- read them, follow them. It is light enough for the average home user. The engine seems pretty solid and I cut 1 cord of wood with the saw (for cutting wood, this saw is too small, but did actually do the task). The negative: the plastic toolless blade adjuster works ok, but seems weak and will break any minute. It worked sorta ok for me, but not great. The oiler didn't work so good after a few hours of use and should be cleaned often.
Overall the saw would be good for a home user that needs to cut 4 inch limbs and the occasional 6-10 tree. Follow instructions for starting and keep the chain well oiled, even if the oiler gets gunked up.

Husqvarna 455 Rancher 20-Inch 55-1/2cc 2-Stroke Gas-Powered Chain Saw Review

Husqvarna 455 Rancher 20-Inch 55-1/2cc 2-Stroke Gas-Powered Chain Saw
Average Reviews:

I just picked up a 455 Rancher about a month ago (today is 4 May, 2006). This is a great saw. I had been using for more than 20 years, and still use to some degree a Stihl 028; another excellent saw.
There are some pros and cons to this saw as with all things.
Here's what I like. It's easy to operate and maintain. Accessibility of the under-cowel components such as the air filter, spark plug, and clutch housing is a no-brainer. It starts easy. In fact, you really don't need the pressure valve. It "pops" after a few short and fast pulls. Remember, once the saw "pops" with the choke, un-choke it and pull it again. You do not need to warm a two stroke with the choke on like you would a 4 stroke engine. Attempting to warm with the choke is the biggest cause of two stroke engine flooding.
Here's what I do not like. The low/hi mixture settings are limited by EPA regulations; a complete and total joke. If you remove the controls to optimize your settings, the warranty is void. But, I think it's better to do that than cook engine from lean settings. There aren't enough chainsaws running in any given period of the day to justify this regulation. So if you are a casual user, really pay attention to the break in procedures. Since the saws run lean, you need to make sure to break them in with extra care. If you use them much more frequently, remove the EPA limiters and richen out the hi/low mix, otherwise you will cook your engine.
Overall this is a great saw. The chisel chains do well for heavier applications. Be careful of kickback with these style chains. You can get low-kick back chains from any dealer. It's all a matter of personal preference.
I have outfitted my saw with an Oregon 20" Bar, chain, and rim sprocket. Once again this is a personal preference issue. The power head of the 455 is plenty and the applications many. If you are a causal user of this saw, talk with the folks at the saw shops for tips and ideas. They are a repository of knowledge and can help you make informed decisions about your saw.

I LOVE this chainsaw. It has an IMMENSE amount of power for such a seemingly small tool, it starts without trouble, is easy to adjust (once you can decipher the instructions), and can take down trees like they were small twigs. It even comes with instructions on how to properly limb a tree, and how to take down the tree itself. Well worth the money. I used it for close to three hours without shutting it off, and it did not overheat or lose power, and shamed the electric chainsaw we were using concurrently. LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!
