I had heard a lot of good things about Huskvarna's reputation, and now I can see why. This product is spectacular!
My biggest gripe about most consumer chainsaws is that they are often difficult to start, either initially or when they are warm, so that by the time it starts, your arms are already sore from pulling the cord over and over again and you're exhausted.
This saw comes with a laminated instruction card. Attach it to the case handle and always refer to it to refresh your memory. If you follow the startup instructions, it starts on the second or third pull, every time. And when warm, up to 30 mins of being off, you can usually just leave the choke off and it will start on the first or second pull. So sweet! Why they don't all do this, I don't know.
Reliable startup is the main reason I bought this saw, after being frustrated with my previous Stihl and Craftsman saws that would often refuse to start or constantly needed to be taken apart.
And in case you forgot to stabilize the fuel and left gas in it for several months, the 345 doesn't mind. It still starts up right away. Wow.
The saw also cuts awesome. It's built to reduce vibration, and it cuts hard woods like a breeze.
Maintenance is very easy. Remove the chain guard and clean the guard in the kitchen sink. Then use a little air spray can to clear off the gunk around the chain drive. Clean the saw after each use and I'm sure it will last for years.
I don't know what these other reviewers problem is with the chain brake. I haven't needed to remove the chain brake cover nor fuss with the spring. And I've never had the chain jump off, and that's even when it got pinched.
There's only one negative -- make sure you remove any extra chain oil from the saw after each use, because it will tend to keep lubricating the chain, and 6 months later you'll find an oily mess in the case. But just make that part of your post-sawing maintenance, unless you know for sure you're going to be using it again very soon. (I didn't have any problem leaving the lubricated oil in the saw when the saw sat on the shelf for a copule of months... but after it sat unused for 6 months, I found this to be an issue. But I'm chalking that up to common sense maintenance.)
I've had mine for about a year-1/2 now, and I LOVE it. I almost look forward to trees falling down in storms now! LOL, but it's true. This saw is an absolute joy. Worth every extra dollar.

Husqvarna 455 Rancher 20-Inch 55-1/2cc 2-Stroke Gas-Powered Chain Saw Review

I just picked up a 455 Rancher about a month ago (today is 4 May, 2006). This is a great saw. I had been using for more than 20 years, and still use to some degree a Stihl 028; another excellent saw.
There are some pros and cons to this saw as with all things.
Here's what I like. It's easy to operate and maintain. Accessibility of the under-cowel components such as the air filter, spark plug, and clutch housing is a no-brainer. It starts easy. In fact, you really don't need the pressure valve. It "pops" after a few short and fast pulls. Remember, once the saw "pops" with the choke, un-choke it and pull it again. You do not need to warm a two stroke with the choke on like you would a 4 stroke engine. Attempting to warm with the choke is the biggest cause of two stroke engine flooding.
Here's what I do not like. The low/hi mixture settings are limited by EPA regulations; a complete and total joke. If you remove the controls to optimize your settings, the warranty is void. But, I think it's better to do that than cook engine from lean settings. There aren't enough chainsaws running in any given period of the day to justify this regulation. So if you are a casual user, really pay attention to the break in procedures. Since the saws run lean, you need to make sure to break them in with extra care. If you use them much more frequently, remove the EPA limiters and richen out the hi/low mix, otherwise you will cook your engine.
Overall this is a great saw. The chisel chains do well for heavier applications. Be careful of kickback with these style chains. You can get low-kick back chains from any dealer. It's all a matter of personal preference.
I have outfitted my saw with an Oregon 20" Bar, chain, and rim sprocket. Once again this is a personal preference issue. The power head of the 455 is plenty and the applications many. If you are a causal user of this saw, talk with the folks at the saw shops for tips and ideas. They are a repository of knowledge and can help you make informed decisions about your saw.

I LOVE this chainsaw. It has an IMMENSE amount of power for such a seemingly small tool, it starts without trouble, is easy to adjust (once you can decipher the instructions), and can take down trees like they were small twigs. It even comes with instructions on how to properly limb a tree, and how to take down the tree itself. Well worth the money. I used it for close to three hours without shutting it off, and it did not overheat or lose power, and shamed the electric chainsaw we were using concurrently. LOVE LOVE LOVE this!!
