after much research, I settled on the 5521 CHV. It was purchased in July of '08. ran well all summer, winterized it and It fired up on the second pull this spring. I have 8300 sq. ft. of lawn (.3-.4 acres i think) and it takes me about 1 hour. The machine handles thick grass without a problem, bags well. The grass bag easily empties, no shaking needed. The engine never boggs down. I push it mostly. My wife demanded a self propelled and she's used it for a total of 15 minutes. When I've played with the self propelled feature, it works fine. minimal squeeze preassure on the lever, tighter pull equals faster speed. My lawn is moderately hilly and it's not a problem for the propulsion.I'm very happy with the purchase at almost 1 year of ownership. The honda engine should last forever.

FYI, this item is identical to the Homelite mower sold at many Home Depot locations (I don't work for any of these outfits). The two are identical except for the the colors. I contacted Earthwise to be certain, and they confirmed it, so buy either one.
This product, to my surprise, is as good as the Ryobi Mulchinator I used to own-- and it was the best cordless mower made in the late 1990's by a large margin. Like that one, this one effectively mulches the grass, even if moist, so small that there is no reason to use the bag or side discharge features. The height adjust is easy, the pushing is easy (for an adult), and you don't have to do any real maintenance (just keep it clean underneath). For the average lawn (I have 3000 square feet), this product has enough charge to do the job, is not quite as loud as a gas mower, and is just as powerful as a typical 4-5 hp model. You can charge it for a few bucks per year. It requires no assembly or tuneups, and tipping it in any direction will not cause a problem. Unless you use it commercially or for a very large property, this product is superior to a gasoline model, and way cleaner! Try a cordless electric model, and you will never want anything else!

Summary: If you have a very small yard (Perhaps 1000-1500 square feet of lawn) this could be a decent compromise for you, otherwise I don't think the 14" path and limited battery capacity will "cut it"
My neighbor has this one from a couple of years ago and I tried it out. It's smaller, lighter and quieter than the two cordless mowers we've used but that 14" path would probably be a dealbreaker for most people. When you consider that you will overlap each pass by at least 2-3 inches, you're really only cutting 10-11 inches on each pass.
+ Easy to maneuver
+ Quiet
+ Small
+ Super light compared to our B&D CM1100 or Toro, both of which weigh about twice as much

- 14" path!?!?!
- Pricey for what you get
- Hard to cut near obstacles
I've put a quick guide of the most popular models on Amazon. All info reported by manufacturer. Amazon won't let me put prices in my review, sorry!

>>Why SHOULD I get a cordless electric mower? They are super quiet, clean, and convenient. No fumes or exhaust- because gas mowers don't have catalytic converters, they can pollute as much in a year as 43 cars!!!!. They aren't necessarily cheaper than a gas mower since they cost more up front but there is basically NO maintenance. (We spent $80 over 10 years for a set of replacement batteries.) Corded electric mowers are a cheaper but having a cord is a pain.
>>Why SHOULDN'T I get a cordless mower? They weigh a LOT more than gas mowers so if you have a hilly lot or have difficulty with physical exertion, forget it. They don't have as much power as gas and re-fueling means charging for a few hours so if your lot is over ½ acre you may want to reconsider.
>>Why do they all come with mulching PLUS bagging? Electric powered mowers have come a long ways but mulching still takes a LOT more power than discharging, so bagging is pretty much a standard feature.
>>What is a watt-hour? It's basically how big your gas tank is - the more watt-hours, the longer you can mow before you have to recharge.
>>Is the cutting path a big deal? Yes - for two reasons. 1) The first thing manufacturers do when power is marginal is reduce the blade size, so I tend to see the smaller mowers as more likely to be underpowered. Second, when you consider that you have to overlap each pass by ~3", a 20" blade now effectively cuts 13% more on each pass. If you have a larger yard, you definitely do NOT want anything under 18" Also, my measurements show most mowers overstate their blade size by 1/2" (Our 20" measures 19-5/8, our 19 measures 18-1/2)
>>Why might I want a removable battery? If you have a large yard, this means you can have a second battery charging while you are using the first. A second battery typically costs $100-$150 but it can make the difference between going electric or not. Finally, if you keep the mower in a shed that doesn't have power, a removable battery will let you bring it in for charging.
>>How long will my batteries last? That depends on your climate and usage. We had a small lot for many years and were religious about recharging right after use. We also live in a cooler climate (Michigan) so it's cooler and the mowing season is shorter. Our batteries lasted ~7 years. Most people should get 3-4 years easily but if you're careless and live in Arizona, you might be able to kill the batteries in a year or two.
>>Why should I care about higher voltage? Higher voltage = more power, PLUS you can recharge the mower faster. With the same chemistry and current, a 36V mower will charge 50% faster than a 24V mower.
>>Metal deck or plastic? Metal rusts but with minimal care it's not an issue. Plastic ends up giving you a more stuff to trim since you can't cut as close to fences, etc.

Black & Decker CMM1200 19-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Mulching Lawn Mower Review

Black and Decker CMM1200 19-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Mulching Lawn Mower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just purchased this mower and mowed my lawn today. First, the positives:
1. This thing is as-advertised. There's no assembly required other than arranging the mulching bag and removing the mulcher - if that's what you want to do.
2. It was incredibly easy to start this thing - insert key and lift lever.
3. No mess, no gas, no oil, no air filter. The only maintenance described in the service manual is blade sharpening (once to twice per year) and battery replacement. (Possible two years?).
4. Charging the unit is as easy as charging a cell phone and it charged up overnight. It had enough juice to mow my 1/3rd acre lot with heavy spring weeds that were also a little wet without running out of battery juice.
5. It was very easy to clean. Just disconnect the key and then you can turn it over to clean the blade and guard without worrying about oil or gas spilling.
6. It's easy to disconnect handle and mulch bag for storage.
Negatives:
1. Although it's not incredibly heavy, it's not as light as my 5HP gas Craftsman mower. Since there's no self-propelling feature, it can get heavy if you had to go up hills - my lawn is relatively flat so no problem there.
2. The unit is basically plastic. It has a cheap feel to it - although I'm sure it would be too heavy if it was metal.
3. There's really nothing protecting the battery underneath the top cover and it's barely held there with a nylon strap.
4. The paper instruction manual is worthless. It has very little information in it and it's hard to read because one section is written and you have to go to another part of the manual for the pictures.
5. The unit came with Styrofoam inserts that surrounded the battery. I had a very strong feeling that these inserts were for shipping only and must be removed before operating the unit. However, there is nothing in the manual that states this either way and I had to figure it out for myself.
6. There are no instructions for how to replace the battery - you are instructed to take it to a service dealer. Perhaps they could have put more effort into the documentation.
7. The mulching bag doesn't seem to hold much grass. I had to empty it three times before I was done mowing.
All and all, I love this mower. I hated having to jack with gas and oil and filters and maintenance of gas mowers. Plus, this thing is relatively quiet compared to my gas mower. I recommend it.

Versatile and Dependable Cordless Cutting PowerWith this electric mower, a 1200-watt output permanent magnet electric motor delivers quick, effective performance. A single battery charge provides plenty of run time to mow a typical home site of 1/3 acre, which translates to a grass area of 10,000 to 12,000 square feet.

The mower's deck offers a cutting width of 19 inches. This durable polymer deck is easy to clean, won't ever rust, and is backed by a lifetime warranty. Epic EP21H 21-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Review

Epic EP21H 21-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Self-Propelled Lawn Mower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this for about two weeks but just had a chance to use it today. I was very impressed at how quiet it was. Even my wife made a comment about how nice it was not hearing the noise of our gas mower wile she worked in the office. I wasn't sure what to expect as we have a large corner lot and several clumps of thick crabgrass spread throughout the yard. I didn't take it easy on the mower. I used the same cutting height as my gas mower and I left in the mulch plug just so I could compare them side by side. There really wasn't much difference between my 6.5hp 21 inch Yard Man and my new Epic Electric. As I ran them side-by-side they both choked in the same places on thick grass (about 8 inches high) on the first mowing of the season. I did notice that the Epic left some tall grass standing after the cut but I'm guessing that will even out after the grass fills in. It did not leave any clumps of cut grass and even did a better job of mulching than my gas mower. I think it is a winner.
Pros:
First one in my neighborhood.
60% less noise than a gas mower.
Instant on.
Self-Propel works well. Took me along at a nice clip.
Comfortable handle and controls.
Steel deck. Looks like it should last a long time.
Yard looks nice. I was impressed how well it mulches.
Cons:
Manual is a joke. The one for the charger is in broken English. Luckily it is easy to assemble and run.
There is a key in the battery area but no clear directions how to remove it.You have to rock it either forward or backwards with a pretty good push to get it to snap out. I was afraid the first time I did it that I would break it but it is strong plastic.
There is a black adapter you have to put on the batteries (facing each other) if you want to charge the batteries out of the mower. Put them in position first as they are heavy and hard to move after they are connected.
When you engage the Self-Propel it kind of pulls you quickly for a second and then it slows to a normal pace. Took me a couple of times to get the hang of it.
It's good to go GREEN!

WORX ECO WG780 19-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower Review

WORX ECO WG780 19-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our old gas mower keeled over halfway through the lawn last weekend ... and then it rained every day all week. By Saturday, the grass was sopping wet and ankle deep.
We unpacked the Worx cordless mower from the box and - wow! - it gobbled through that grass! It cuts beautifully, neat and even, and the motor doesn't complain even when you run over sticks (not that you are supposed to run over sticks, but sometimes it happens). The mulching function makes the clippings literally invisible.
We knew we wanted a cordless electric mower. There are half a dozen choices on the market now; this is one of the more expensive ones, but it's worth it. As other reviews have noted, it's very thoughtfully designed. There's no assembly needed - it unfolds ready-to-go out of the box (and folds back down, with the squeeze of a lever, for storage). Yes, it's 80 pounds, but the better gas mowers are up there too, and great ergonomics mean you won't strain yourself pushing it. At 5'0", I particularly appreciated the height-adjustable handle and easy-to-hold deadman switch. The grass height adjuster is a giant joystick, easy to see and reach. It starts instantly with the push of a button - get used to just letting go rather than letting it idle when you stop to think or sneeze; it's not like a gas mower where you worry about starting it up again. It's so quiet you can hear your iPod over it, and best of all - you smell nothing but sweet cut grass.
One great virtue of this model is that it has a removable battery. That means you can charge the battery indoors, if your mower lives in an unelectrified shed. It also means that the battery can winter indoors, where it will be safer and last longer. If you have acres and acres of lawn, you could even buy a second battery and swap it out when the first is spent. The battery compartment is well-designed and easy to access; the battery has a carrying handle (it's heavy!) and a connector that snaps on in only one way. It's just like charging your cell phone, only bigger.
The battery has a charge indicator - full, halfway, and empty. Our house sits on a ~7000 square foot lot. I mowed all the grass, front and back, and the indicator light went from full to half. (I don't know if it really started out tippy-top full, though, because I didn't charge it - I just unpacked and mowed). The ad copy says it'll go 17,500 square feet per charge. From what I've seen so far, I'm not worried.
The downside: the manual is confusing. It talks about a "mulching attachment", but really you mulch by leaving the only provided attachment off, not by putting it on. And of course it would be even better if cordless lawnmowers used NiCad batteries rather than lead acid (longer life, less pollution, much less heavy), but no manufacturer's doing that yet.

Reduce costly mower maintenance and eliminate emissions with the WorxECO 24V Cordless Lawn Mower. A high powered 24-volt battery lets you mow up to 17,500 square feet on a single charge and frees you from the hassle of messy oil and gasoline motors with traditional mowers. And because the mower produces zero emissions, you'll be doing even more to keep your environment, not just your lawn, green and healthy.
Environmentally Friendly, Maintenance FreeBecause it has an electric motor, the WorxECO Mower eliminates the hassle with a traditional gasoline engine--just push the start button, and go. The rechargeable battery provides enough power to mow up to 17,500 square feet on a single charge. Purchase additional rechargeable batteries to cover larger jobs, so you don't have to waste time waiting for your battery to recharge to complete the job. The electric motor emits much less noise than a gas engine, protecting your hearing and reducing noise pollution.
Versatility to Cut, Mulch, or BagThe 19-inch deck offers plenty of cutting surface, with easy all-wheel height adjustment between 1-1/2 and 3-1/2 inches. You can collect your clippings in the included grass bag, slip in the mulch insert and recycle clippings back into your yard, or take advantage of the side discharge chute to quickly clear grass from the cutting deck.
Added features include a safety key to prevent accidentally starting of the mower, and a power level indicator that keeps you informed on how much charge you have left in your battery.
Ergonomic, Adjustable DesignThe WorxECO 24V Mower features ErgoSum Design Technology, allowing you to adjust the handle to the most comfortable operating angle without using any tools. Thanks to the electric motor, vibration is minimal, and the included soft grips reduce vibration further to minimize fatigue. The handle also folds for easy storage.
The WorxECO 24V Cordless Lawn Mower is covered by a two-year limited warranty.

Solaris S21HB 21-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Mulching Lawn Mower with Bag and Side Discharge Review

Solaris S21HB 21-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Mulching Lawn Mower with Bag and Side Discharge
Average Reviews:

I initially considered the "SP" version of this mower @ Home Depot...the only model they sell. If you have serious elevation changes in your yard, perhaps the self-propelled version is worthwhile [whether the front-wheel drive Solaris or its rear-wheel drive Epic & Utopia cousins]. Otherwise, buy this model. You can't get this info from the Linamar website, but the self-propelled versions are 18# heavier; when you're trying to make a battery charge last, draining them via an extra drive belt to pull/push a [heavier] mower makes little sense.
This mower is solidly built, & the big wheels make it easy to push & quite maneuverable. I gave it a test run, then handed it off to the 16-year old who cuts my grass. No issues. I was particularly pleased to see how well it mulched, as I'm a big believer in leaving clippings to nourish the lawn. There was no clumping, & as long as we don't cut wet grass, I expect it to stay that way.
Other cordless mowers probably perform as well, though most have decks smaller than this one's 21" which means longer mowing time. I think the Solaris' brushless motor is a huge advantage, & expect great longevity. Ultimately, though, I rejected most other mowers because replacing their batteries was cumbersome or impossible; I think that's nuts. The Solaris batteries swap out in seconds. Mine lasted about as long as expected, covering 80% of my .4 acres. With the money I saved by skipping the self-propelled feature [& headaches], I bought a 2nd set of batteries & have power to spare. It's a great solution, & my neighbors--including one who just bought an $800 Honda to get a pushbutton start like mine--are jealous.
The cons are minor. Changing deck height requires moving 4 levers instead of 1...but I only do this a couple of times a season. The tone it emits on stopping is irritating [hold the bail down or pull the key to silence]. Charger mechanical connections could be tighter. Overall, though, well-designed & well-built.

Earthwise 60120 20-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower Review

I got tired of messing with gasoline, oil, and the mixing, pouring, and spilling of the two, so I gave all my lawn equipment away and hired a gardener - 2 years later realize what a mistake - all gardener does is mow grass every 2 weeks and charge $$$$ for everything else. So I decided to to take back my yard and went online to research electric mowers and decrease my carbon footprint.
I was all ready to purchase a corded model when I came across the Earthwise 20" 24 volt cordless rechargeable. I must admit that I was very apprehensive about cordless, I've owned many gutless cordless power tools. During my research of the Earthwise I ran across a video that showed the lawnmower in action - I was sold. I purchased immediately and have been extremely pleased.
This mower has all the power that I could ever need to take care of my yard (approx. 1/4 acre of grass, with some on a slope). The battery came fully charged and I had the mower out of the box, fully assembled (very easy), and out mowing withing 20 minutes. Used the grass catcher just to see how it worked (did a great job), then took it off and have mulched ever since (this machine turns your grass into the minutest particles).
It is very well constructed (the deck is metal - this is good), the height adjustment could not be easier (one lever adjusts all wheels - again, very good), it pushes very easily (thanks to the ball-bearing wheels), and the handle folds to make for very compact storage.
My yard and I am happy again!

The easy-in, easy-out battery provides enough power to handle almost any lawn in a single charge. The powerful 24-volt battery system delivers consistent performance and eliminates tricky pull-starts and noisy operation, so you can have all the performance of a gas-powered motor without any of the hassles. And not only is this mower powerful, but it's also a zero-emissions tool, so you can get the job done while protecting the environment.
Designed to Save You Time and Effort over the Long TermThe wide 20-inch cutting path and heavy-duty steel mower deck ensure efficient, long-lasting performance. With wide 20-inch coverage, your lawn will require fewer passes, which will save you both time and effort.
Navigating tough, uneven terrain is made easy by the composite seven-inch front wheels and oversized 9-1/2 inch rear wheels, which have ball bearings for better maneuverability and longer life. And the V-handle with cushion grip offers greater control over tough terrain and provides comfort. A nice bonus, the handle folds down so you can easily store the mower.
Single-lever Height Control for Easier AdjustmentsInstead of having to adjust each wheel when changing the height of the mower blade, the Earthwise 60120 Cordless Electric Mower features a single-lever height control system that makes it easier than ever to adjust the height of the cut. You can choose between seven height positions, ranging from 1-1/2 to four inches.
The single-lever height control is just one feature that makes the 60120 so easy to use. Other ease-of-use features include the handle-mounted safety-blade control, the easy on/off mulch plug, and the lift handle lock that releases the battery from its compartment. In addition, this mower assembles with no tools required--simply hand-tighten several components and you're ready to go!
Innovative 3-in-1 Design for Added VersatilityOutperforming other mowers, the Earthwise 60120 Cordless Electric Lawnmower is three mowers in one, functioning as a mulching mower, a side discharge mower, and a rear bag mower. As your lawn changes throughout the spring, summer, and fall, the 60120 will adapt to the changing seasons as well. You can mulch your grass in the spring to help thicken the lawn, or you can use the bag to clear leaves and debris in the fall--the choice is yours!
The Earthwise 60120 weighs 92 pounds and is backed by a two-year limited warranty from the manufacturer.

Black & Decker CM1836 18-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower Review

Black and Decker CM1836 18-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Black and Decker Cordless 24 volt mulching mower (CMM1000) in 2005 and have been using it ever since. When I had the opportunity to upgrade to this mower (CM1836) I jumped on it.
I wanted a cordless electric mower to:
- Not have to deal with gas and oil
- Be able to mow without feeling like I need a shower due to exhaust fumes
- Save my hearing
- Keep me from re-injuring my right shoulder by not having to pull the cord to start
- Mulch
The CMM1000 did all of those fantastically for 4 1/2 years for me and the CM1836 improves on most features. I'm really happy to have the newer version. I know I have just barely used this mower and I promise to update this review if anything changes. For now, I can give you a good comparison of this mower with my previous cordless electric, keeping in mind that I've been quite happy with the previous version.
The CM 1836 Improves in all of these areas over the CMM1000 which I really liked quite well:
- This mower claims to be 50% more powerful with 36 volts vs 24 volts
. - Good because old mower struggled with tall grass
. - Not sure how this really translates in performance
- This mower is a tad quieter than the old one
- The handle is more ergonomic and easier to grip
- This mower as a whole is a bit smaller and lighter
- This mower stores more easily because it has a fold down handle
- The starting mechanism is easier and more elegant
- The safety key is better (safer from 2 year olds than the old one)
The CM 1836 actually is a bit worse than the CMM1000 in a couple areas:
- The height adjustment mechanism is harder to use than the old one.
. - Although it may be safer because there is no way to adjust while running now
. - Note that it is still a single lever that adjusts all wheels
- The cutting width is 1" less on an already short cutting width (only 18")
- The bag is a bit smaller on an already small bag (although I mulch)
- There is no longer a battery level indicator on the mower which was nice to have
I'm not sure if this is good or bad, but this mower has a smaller rear wheel as well. I haven't noticed it as a problem yet.
I still have the following complaint with this mower, but I think it is slightly improved over the old one. The mowing deck is deceptive. It has a wide side area embedded within the deck that prevents the blade from going out as far as the edge of the deck. You have to have more overlap between strips of grass when mowing. (I think that the frame of the mower with the wheel height adjustment is hidden in the mowing deck.)
One word of caution is that my battery quit working just short of 2 years on the old mower. Luckily, it was still in warranty and Black and Decker replaced it free of charge. Unfortunately, the nearest authorized service shop to do it was 70 miles away and they were not very accommodating (9-5 Monday through Friday).
One thing to note is that when I set this up I found that the front right wheel was sort of caught up on the mowing deck and the adjustment lever wouldn't work with that wheel. I determined that the axle for the wheel had not been inserted all the way across (it had a little stopping mechanism). I fixed it quickly by loosening the axle bracket and sliding the axle the rest of the way and then tightening the bracket back up. Hope the rest of it was assembled correctly by the factory.
BOTTOM LINE: I absolutely love having an electric mower. As long as you don't let the grass get totally out of control, you shouldn't ever have problems with it and you will LOVE that you don't have to deal with fumes, noise, or running to get gas for it.

Black & Decker CM1936 19-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower With Removable Battery Review

Black and Decker CM1936 19-Inch 36-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower With Removable Battery

This is the first major redesign of the Black & Decker 19" Cordless Mower since its introduction. I bought one of the first CMM1000's shortly after it was introduced in 1996. It worked great for 14 years, with only two battery replacements in that time. I gave it to a friend who is using it and it continues to give great performance.
The CM1936 has a customer removable battery allowing easy battery interchange for large yards with long grass. My yard is about 12000 square feet and can normally be mowed with one charge. The blade has been redesigned for longer run time. The charger recharges the battery a useable amount in 4 hours.
The height of all four wheels can be readjusted in less than 1 second. The run interlock is now a bail bar (like the original CMM1000) which is nicer than the lever on the CMM1200. I wish the new mower had the battery indicator that was provided on the original CMM1000. Perhaps it can be added as a special accessory key assembly. It is not really necessary, but is a nice feature.
Once you experience not having gasoline smell on your hands and quiet operation with no starting hassles, you won't mind having to push this mower. If you keep it connected to the charger continuously when not in use, it will give the best battery life. The battery can be charged when removed from the mower if you keep the mower in a shed without power. The CM1936 is highly recommended.
