Nova 1624-44 Wood Lathe Review

Being a fairly new woodturner, this was the first lathe that I bought. I am extremely satisfied and very glad with the choice that I made. Assembly is not the easiest project, mostly because of the weight of the lathe, however, once set up, that weight is very useful in keeping the structure steady when turning unbalanced blanks. Changing speeds is very easy, and the low speed capabilities come in handy with large projects. The 16" swing is extremely nice, along with the reverse switch and the swivel headstock. Overall, this is an excellent lathe, and a great addition to any woodshop.

I have been using this lathe for approximately 1 year and this is what I have found.
I bought the lathe as a first lathe. I was inexperienced and on a budget. With those things in mind, it did well for the first few months. All the items were there, it shipped fast and was not difficult to assemble without assistance from anyone else, though I recommend getting a friend to help with some of the lifting.
I noticed a rattle and some vibration, but it was very minimal and it didn't seem to affect performance. I satisfactorily turned several bowls and a lot of spindle work. The motor gets a lot of bang out of the 3/4 horses. The mobile headstock is very versital. The tool rest is quite good. For a starter lathe it is a nice tool.
Now to the problems.
1) The base is not heavy or rigid enough. That is an easy fix and not a real detractor.
2) The tailstock base does not lock down well enough and I find myself retightening it frequently.
3) The biggest problem now is the constant worsening of the rattling and the vibration it causes, which translates into the spindle and handwheel. It makes it impossible to rechuch anything accurately and vibration is extreme, even with small loads. One of the pulleys is definately mis-machined and has both horizontal and vertical displacement while running. Delta has the pulleys on back order from their overseas supplier. I therefore took it in to the local authorized dealer and have yet to hear back. A wobbley handwheel and spindle movement make turning unenjoyable.
Searching the web and the message boards, I have seen about an even number of people saying they have had no problems as those who have had worse problems than I have. Most seem to revolve around the reeves drive and quality control...Perhaps the overseas manufacture of this lathe is at fault, I don't know.
If Delta could fix the problems with the drive and pulleys, this could be a great mid range lathe. With the mechanical difficulties I am having now with only moderate use (1-2 weekends a month), I could not recommend this lathe unless you test the specific one you are buying to make sure it is in good working order.

Vega D-36 36-Inch Professional Lathe Duplicator Review

Vega D-36 36-Inch Professional Lathe Duplicator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very happy with the duplication of this machine. However the video and the written instructions that were included were terrible. The video was made in 1990 and it shows an out of date assembly method. I watched the out of focus video and muffled sound for about 5 minutes. The video was no help on how the machine is put together. The written instructions were no better. The print is small and it does not show where to install all the parts that were given. The manufacturer needs at least a full color photo so you can have some kind of idea where things go. That being said I would still recommend this duplicator even though setting it up was time consuming. You can e-mail me at mccormickwoodworking.com if you need any help setting yours up. ....I find that this is a very nicely engineered tool. It is easyto set up after watching the video, though the written instructionsare poor. Some of the non-essential parts are poorly machined, but this does not effect their performance, just their asthetics. I would recommend this tool for anyone who would like a duplicator regardless of the lathe that you own. With a little help from Vega and Amazon, my duplicator fit my vintage Oliver lathe perfectly.

I have turned on every lathe from an big Oliver pattern lathes slick Euopean models and this lathe has the best set of features for the money. In lathe work quick adjustments are needed to allow you to keep your focus on the form that you are trying to produce. A tool rest moved to the right spot at the right time keeps the tool running clean and eliminates tearouts. This is also a great saftey feature. That is just what this lathe has, features that only the most expensive lathes have in one machine. This rotating head found on only a handfull of other brands was a nice touch. Just as important was the 'live center' with the proper point for wood turning. Again the abaility to keep the tail support in the proper tension as the turning progress keeps everthing running smooth, And that is what wood lathe work is all about. If you do alot of work with large chuncks of wood you will want to add a pair of runners and place some weight on them. I am close to 6 foot tall and I like a little more height so I used 2X4 lumber to gain the height. I then placed a bead of silicone calk down on the floor and stuck the runners down to offer a solid base. I have used this meathod on several 'light' machines with good results.
Just as important as stock features are the after-markets items and there are plenty that fit the Jet. Just try to find Nova chuck to fit a big Oliver!

While I'm pleased with my purchase, I am not pleased with the condition of the product when it arrived. The box had 3 holes in it, and the chip tray was dented in 3 out of the 4 corners. Bottom line to the problem was lack of packing material in the box.

Buying a lathe it one of the hardest decisions you will make in putting a shop together. The possibilities are endless, and, as you move up the price curve the cost of a misjudgment can get terrifying. Unless you are willing to settle for a mini-lathe (Jet makes several good lathes in that category as well) the bigger a lathe you can buy (up to a limit) the happier you will be in the long run.
The 1642, right in the middle of the price range can turn up to a 16" inch diameter bowl and up to 40+ inches in length - in other words, a small log - is one possibility you should seriously consider. At 400+ pounds it is solid enough to dampen vibration without taking a crew to assemble or move it. With a 1-1/2 horsepower motor it has enough power to do just about everything you might want to do.
Spindle speed is controlled by a two-position belt drive (0 - 1700 rpm or 0 - 3200 rpm) and is continuously variable over those ranges. While variable speed isn't a necessity, it's amazing how quickly you learn to depend on the ability to change speed as you turn. This is a superior piece of equipment and to get something better you would have to spend at least twice as much.
There are exactly two things I don't like about this lathe. One is trivial, I would have likes an optional hand turning wheel instead of having to grab a cylindrical turning bar to turn the work about manually. This is only a problem with pieces that are too small to grab onto - like pen mandrels. The other issue is that, to turn a bowl over 16" you have to run the head to the other end of the lathe, rather than turn it in place. This means the lathe takes up a bit more space and is slightly less convenient. But if you are working in that size range you probably should be looking at a more specialized tool.
I would rate this a best buy for the amateur through semi-professional woodshop. I've been using one for a while now, and I've had no reason to regret the decision. Keep in mind that, whatever lathe you buy, your next really big expense will be equipping it with all the neat gadgets that make woodturning a world of it's own.

Offering a one-inch swing over the bench and 42-inch capacity between centers, the JET 708359 JWL-1642EVS Woodworking Lathe, 115-Volt 1 Phase is ideal for home shop use. Boasting the versatility of a sliding headstock, electronic variable speed, and the necessary capacity for large projects, the JET JWL-1642EVS is a great lathe for beginning and serious craftspeople alike.
The multi ball bearing live center and screw on cone attachment make turning projects with a center hole easier and safer. The strong, three phase motor ennsures plenty of power for a wide range of projects.Three-Phase Motor with Electronic Inverter for Powerful PerformanceThe JWL-1642EVS comes equipped with a 1-1/2HP, three phase, 115-volt motor for shops that do not have 220-volt power available. An electronic inverter does all the work to convert from the "1 phase" to "3 phase." The inverter also provides the ability to vary the frequency of the motor, which in turn allows for variable speed.
Cast-Iron Castings for Stability and Smooth OperationBased on heavy-duty iron castings, the JWL-1642EVS provides long-term accuracy and smooth, vibration-free operation. Even the legs are made from an iron casting and include cast-in supports and adjustable pads at each foot to ensure a solid stance on uneven surfaces. With these legs, the spindle (center) height is a comfortable 44.5 inches above the floor.
The JWL-1642EVS headstock is also made from a massive iron casting that provides rigid support for the 1-1/2 HP, variable speed motor(0 to 3,200 RPM), and the high-strength spindle. After machining, the headstock is fitted with large diameter, high-quality ball bearings that support the precision-machined spindle for reliable performance.
Large-Diameter Spindle with Built-in Indexing for Drilling, Fluting, and MoreThe large-diameter spindle has a 1.25 x 8 threads-per-inch nose that supports the large chucks typically used with this type of lathe. Additionally, the outboard end of the spindle is fitted with a barrel-type grip for turning the spindle by hand. The spindle also has internal indexing built in that allows you to lock it in 36 positions (or 10-degree increments) for drilling, fluting, grooving, and other operations.
For added convenience, the spindle is indexed with a screw-in pin provided with the lathe. There's also a push-button spindle lock on the front of the headstock for a simple, tool-free way to temporarily lock the spindle when you install or remove the faceplate, chuck, or other screw-on accessories.
Heavy-Gauge Wire Guard for SafetyA special mount on the rear of the headstock accepts a heavy-gauge wire guard (included), and a spring-loaded pin indexes the guard up or down to make mounting and removing turned objects easy. This guard also serves as a protective shield between the work and the operator, when large chips and chunks generated while turning blanks can turn into dangerous projectiles.
User-Friendly Controls, LED, and Toggle SwitchDesigned to be user-friendly, the JWL-1642EVS features dial-operated, infinite speed controls conveniently located on the front of the headstock. A large digital LED readout makes monitoring the spindle speed easy and very accurate, while the toggle switch on the front panel allows selecting forward and reverse spindle directions. Finally, a large-diameter pull on/push off button (also on the front panel) is easily accessible no matter your operating position.
Large Tailstock for StabilityThe JWL-1642EVS has a large tailstock with the mass and wide base to generate the stability you need. The large ram has a full four-inch travel, operated by an easy-to-turn, five-inch diameter handwheel fitted with a spinner handle, the popular #2 Morse taper, and a 3/8-inch diameter through hole, which is convenient for drilling lamp bases. Finally, like the tool-rest base, a large handle makes it easy to lock the tailstock securely in place.
Ball bearing Live Center and Cast Iron Tool Rest Base for VersatilityThe JWL-1642EVS comes with a high-end, multi-row ball bearing live center with a screw-on, large-diameter cone for projects like peppermills and boxes, and a cast-iron tool-rest base designed to be very rigid, easy to position, and thanks to its comfortably long handle, very easy to lock in position.
The JWL-1642EVS measures 29 x 28 x 59 inches (WxHxL), weighs 410 pounds, and is covered by a five-year warranty.

I love the variable speed, but the low speed is too fast - and getting faster. It started at around 600 rpm, but now does not get below 1000. Ordered a new belt to get the speed down (as the belt wears and gets narrower, the speed goes up. The motor seems to have the power it needs, so stalling is minimal.
I don't have a big band saw, so my bowl planks are very out of round and chunky from the chain saw when I start, but I only had one (so far) that caused the lathe to walk across the floor. Probably would help to add some weight...
The main issue I have found so far is the the levers that hold the tool rest strip out very easily - especially if you use the articulated arm. Shop Fox has sent me 4 sets of replacement, and I just stopped using the arm so I could keep turning. The banjo foot is a little short, and is hard to work around the larger bowls without the arm. (but possible)
Customer Service has been great - sending replacement parts when I need them. They even sent a replacement belt at no charge.
The tail stock does not tighten into the correct position always, I have to put a twist on it when I secure it or it will line up a little to the left. With the twist it is spot on.
It has no reverse, no hand wheel, and no way to lock the spindle in the headstock.
All in all, it gets the job done, but does not have the polish and the craftsmanship of the bigger lathes. I have been able to turn 14" bowls, candle holders, lidded boxes, and most anything I have tried. Sometimes the pucker factor is high due to the speed, but I have managed.
