14" Vertical Bandsaws are great. I've owned 2 of them in my life. Most ammatures shy away from 700+lb bandsaws because of the movability aspect, but you shouldn't. Get yourself a mini pallette jack or standard pallete jack to lift this thing around when necessary. Then you can leave it on 2x4's or 4x4'x. The machine is heavy enough that bolting it down is entirely unnecessary. Most of the weight in a 14" vertical bandsaw is in the arm and this is where the weight allows you to cut everything from sheet metal to billets of solid steel.
Wilton is a great brand, so is Jet, so is MSC, KBC and many of the others. In fact most of these bandsaws are made in the same factory. That said make sure you get a 1HP model. Don't settle for 1/2 or 3/4HP as this bandsaw is the beginning spectrum in the vertical metal-cutting bandsaw range, don't short change yourself by getting less then 1HP from the get go.
Input: My preference is for 110V 1HP as you can plug into any standard outlet. I have 110V 20Amp for my shop outlets and my bandsaw runs great on it. If you are doing a stationary installation the 220V may be better for you, otherwise you will use a 220V cord and those are generally limited to 6'. However 1HP is 1HP so 220 isn't going to give you more horses.
Mobility: As I said above a pallet jack moves this around with ease. Failing that I suggest having a local welding company weld you up a very solid 1000lb+ capacity mobile base. I've investigated every mobile base around and most are no where near strong enough for a unit of 700lb+ nor do they match the dimensions of the foot of this saw.
Blades: Contrary to what all these 14" bandsaw specs say, you can run 3/4" blades on these machines, in fact the wheels are designed for it by allowing the teeth to not rest on the wheel. The guides are highly adjustable as well and hold 3/4" easy. The only thing that has to be modified is 1 of the pegs that help close the top door. Why the engineers could not have made a different type of door closure system is beyond me. Simply take out this bolt (which will be obvious) as it will interfere with 3/4" blade travel, and bend the top tab on the bottom door away from it's peg and then your 3/4" blade travels perfectly. Easily done in a few seconds.
Alignment: This can't be overstated. When you get the bandsaw BEFORE even turning it on check the alignment of both the top guides and the bottom guides. Also there are 4 different front to back guides, two in the top and two in the bottom. Half of the front to back guides hold the whole guide assembly while the other half hold a brass pin of which works as a stop for the back of the blade. If this is difficult to imagine you will see and it will be clear when looking at the bandsw in person. Make sure that not only the guides are aligned, but also make sure the front to back guides have pushed the blade forward enough that the teeth do not enter the guides. If not you will push stock into the blade and the blades teeth will recess into the guides and break the teeth off, thus ruining your blade almost instantly. SO MAKE SURE you adjust the front to back travel behind the guides and make sure that brass pin, which is the final stop for the back of the bandsaw blade, is far enough forward to never allow the teeth to enter the path of those hardened tool steel guide.
Blade Welding: I advice total novices to buy pre-welded blades as this will make it much easier on you. Generally you will not break blades and so you will never use the annealing/welding station "unless" you buy coils of blade and weld your own blade lengths or on very rare instances you break a tooth off your blade. Thus you'll save yourself a lot of hassle by just buying pre-welded blades as they have total precision which I think even an expert will fine is hard to match. With that said the blade welder does great on 1/2" blades provided your skilled, you align the teeth perfectly, you have a mig or tig to fix anything that didn't get welded strong enough, plus you have grinders/sanders to make the blade exact tolerances (*Note the grinder on the machine is pretty difficult and inadequate, so don't try to rely solely on it). Again this is why I say save yourself the hassle and buy pre-welded blades from the get go. The blade welder station will weld 3/4" blades but annealing them was impossible for me, I just ended up getting the annealer to smoke :( so If needed i'd weld your 3/4 blades on the station, and then anneal with a propane or other torch very lightly. 1/2" blades are adequate but the 3/4" blades on this machine are phenemenonal, especially for long straight cuts through 1"+ thick material. 1/4-1/2" is better for contour cuts and adequate for thinner material(*as in under 1"). The blade that comes with this machine is nothing special, so get yourself a powerband or gladiator blade and describe your average process to a sales rep so you get the right thing. *Hint: You will save yourself time and frustration by writing down on the inside of the door in black permanent marker the blade length in both exact inches and in feet as catalogs often refer to one or the other, but rarely both. When buying pre-welded blades (not custom welded blades which you can have welded to any length but are generally more expensive or require minimum purchase of 2 or 3 or more) make sure you buy your pre-welded blade near the top length of your saws capability that way should you need to cut a section out and re-weld the blade you have adequate space to do so.
Cutting: Remember to keep 4-6 teeth in the stock at all times. This is what they call TPI (teeth per inch). If your cutting very thick stuff 1"+ then 4-6 Teeth per inch is fine, if your cutting thinner stock you will want anywhere from 10-14TPI to 14-18TPI(for cutting thin sheet metal). To put in perspective most hand hacksaw blades start at 14"TPI then go up to 18, 24 and 32. More teeth per inch gives you a smoother cut but removes less stock, and thus is slower, hence why it is used on thinner material. Less teeth gives you a rougher cut, removes more stock faster and is better on thicker material. Most people will want to order a blade for this saw that works good on high grade carbon steel and is 10-14TPI, for those only doing thin sheet metal fabrication you might want a 14-18TPI blade.
Learning your saw, adjusting the guides and the fences and taking some time to adjust and inspect before even starting the saw will be greatly advantageous and will probably stop you from ruining the blade that comes with it.
CONS: It would have been nice if they built in a small cord keeper on the side of the machine as those who are going to install a plug will find that there is nothing to coil that plug around when not in use. Agan it's a small thing. I wish they would have designed the door in such a way so that the 3/4" blade doesn't hit the door pegs and thus you have to remove them when using a 3/4" blade. Again that's a small nuisance. Overall this and other 14" bandsaws are worth the buy and they are all very similar, so find one that has a great price. One thing I like about some over others is that some come with tables that have fence/miter guage grooves. Thats a huge benefit for those wantting to making straigt cuts.
-Cheers

This is my third bandsaw. One a Shopsmith and another a 14" Delta. Still have them all. So, I needed a resaw bandsaw and bought the jet. No problems except one. I think that the maker of tools should be made to use them for a week, or two. They should also be forced to change the blades over and over again. The problem is it's almost imposible to losen and tighten the back bottom screw to adjust the bearings. When I first got it I had to take the table off to align the blade. The simple sloution is to drill a small 1/4" hole on the table top directly over the screw. Then with a long hex wrench you can easly get to the screw. now why didn't they think about that at the factory?

Ordered this DC-1100CK Dust Collector System through Amazon.com. Took only 8 days to arrive from date of order. The system was delivered by UPS Ground. There were two large separate boxes that were unloaded and left by my garage door. All items were extremely well packaged and there were no damaged parts. Assembly of the entire unit took about 1 1/2 hours with no interruptions. The assembly instructions provided by Jet are excellent. The canister filter system is state-of-the-art all the way. Simply amazing at how efficient this system is. Absolutely no dust whatsover escapes from my table saw, band saw or radial arm saw when attached to the DC-1100CK system. Clear plastic collection bags are a great plus as you know when they need to be emptied or replaced. Jet even included 4 extra bags with the shipment!!! I did not have any of the leaks at the entrance port of the unit that other reviewers have noted in the past. I imagine that Jet has corrected the problem at the factory. My unit was perfect in every way. Very high quality components and great paint finish. This unit provides a huge amount of suction and is very quiet in operation. The large, high grade casters on the base of the unit make it very easy to move around my shop from tool to tool. If you are considering a dust collection system for your shop, this is definitely the one to get!!!!! Jet has a real winner here!!!! Cudos to them for a job extremely well done!!!

JET 708100 JWTS-10 10-Inch WorkShop Table Saw Review

JET 708100 JWTS-10 10-Inch WorkShop Table Saw
Average Reviews:

This unit has a very substantial cast iron central section with a powerful and quiet motor and belt drive system and smoothly operating elevate and angle controls. It is virtually vibration free, despite what I consider a somewhat under-reinforced leg assembly with two wheels and two adjustable pads. The wheels seem like an afterthought - the legs twist and shimmy if one really tries to move the saw around. The weight of the saw however seems enough to press everything in place when in position so that there is no vibration. One can take the wheels off, making it very sturdy and nonmobile, or then set the leg assembly on a good aftermarket rolling stand.
The stamped metal extensions felt a little flimsy, especially in comparison to the hefty central section, but they firm up when assembly is integrated with the front and rear rails. Assembly instructions start out detailed but actually miss or misstate a few things - luckily one can figure most of it out. Aligning the rail sections and extensions takes some finesse, but everything does align quite well. The fence and miter are quite good, but not top of the line (as expected in this price range). The saw arbor assembly came perfectly aligned. I replaced the stock blade with a Freud blade in the course of the initial assembly (offered by Amazon with the purchase.) Cutting 2" thick oak was smooth and precise. Overall, an excellent value. I would give it 4 and 1/2 stars.

This JET Tablesaw features a powerful 1-1/2HP motor with a poly-V drive belt transfer system to more efficiently power the saw blade. With a unique trunnion design, the motor is completely within the tablesaw cabinet rather than hanging out the backside like on competitive units. The steel extension tables give you a much larger working surface to help support the project while the double locking fence and deluxe miter gauge allow for precision cuts on any project. The unit has a left tilting blade for more controlled bevel cutting and offers a maximum 3-1/8" depth of cut at 90 degrees.

Grizzly G1066R 24" Drum Sander Review

Grizzly G1066R 24 Drum Sander
Average Reviews:

A little trouble with the first shipment but could have been a ups issue. as far as the sander it works great. But expect a lot of set-up time. I probably spent a day on set-up but I'm very precise about my tools. Put casters on this bad boy, it weighs a lot. As far as sanding, it does an excellent job, super smooth after a couple of passes. Mine came with 60 and 100 grit paper on first and second drum, I changed it to 80/120 to get it ready for the random orbit sander for the final surface. Dust collection is not the best. I have it right beside my 1600cfm collector with 2 hoses, it gets the fine airbourne dust but leaves a lot on the wood and conveyor to fall off on the floor. The main thing this beast could use is some way of determining the set-up height. You have to push your wood in with the machine off and adjust by feel. It has plenty of power, never had it even grunt the least. The sandpaper attachment doesn't keep the paper tight enough for me so I spray the back of the sandpaper with contact adhesive just before rolling it on and then tape the ends with packing tape. I still have 24" of sanding because the rollers are about 25" to 25 1/2" long. I've had the machine for about six months and had no trouble. I find myself running everything through it from boards to gluded panels-(which I bought it for). Leaves edges square too. If your like me and can't justify a wide belt sander, I would recommend this powerful sander, and buy it again.

I got my band saw a few weeks ago and I have been using it since then. I have to say, that I am very impressed with the quality of the build and the parts. This is a rock solid band saw and every piece of it yells quality. It comes in two big and heavy boxes and you need to assemble it yourself. In my case, it is not a big deal and to some degree, I even prefer to do it, so that I can get a good look at all the parts and details. I ordered the saw with the 6" riser block, the rip fence and roller bearings. It took a few hours to put it together, since I had to build a sturdy platform for it, to mount it on a mobile rack. But once that was taken care of, everything else moved pretty quickly and following the instructions, I put all the parts together and I was in business. I ended up with a saw that stands almost 7' tall and I can easily resaw 12" wide stock. I did some tests with 2x10 stock and I could produce very nice and thin layers. The dust port on the saw is a 4" port and it utilizes a design that I have seen on old Rockwell saws. Overall I am happy with the purchase and would recommend the saw to anybody looking for a nice and powerful band saw. (...)

Extremely disappointing. Workmanship was horrible. 1 blade door latch did work. Blade does not flow through center of table, it is very off center and not adjustable. Speed adjustment is a cumbersome 2 person job as it is impossible to tension the belts adequately by pressing down on the motor while securing the retention bolts. Riser installed crooked and not fixable. Blade rubs against return channel (made of plastic.) Descending blade guide poorly manufactured and cumbersome to adjust. Blade guides made of plastic blocks instead of metal wheels. Also arrived in with significant dent in base which chipped off a 1 cm sq of paint. I find myself using my $150 Craftsman bench top band saw whenever possible to avoid using this disappointing yet expensive purchase. The much cheaper Craftsman bench top saw has MUCH higher manufacturing standards. Will never buy a Jet product again.

JET 708358K JWL-1442VSK 14-by-42-Inch VS PRO Wood Lathe with Legs Review

JET 708358K JWL-1442VSK 14-by-42-Inch VS PRO Wood Lathe with Legs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I want this review to be helpful to all who may read it so I have divided my comments into four sections, 1) My motivation for purchasing the Jet 1442, 2) My experience with the packing and shipping of this heavy machine, 3) My thoughts on the assembly of the Jet 1442, and 4) My experience using the Jet 1442.
___________________________________________________
My Motivation for Purchasing the Jet 1442
I have been looking for a heavy duty lathe for quite a while. I was looking for a lathe that was powerful enough to swing large diameter spindle and bowl blanks. I wanted a machine that was heavy enough so blanks that were severely out of round or blanks of uneven density would not cause the lathe to vibrate excessively. I didn't want a lathe that required 2 or 3 hundred pounds of sand bag ballast added to the lower shelf just to make it stable. It doesn't make sense to me to purchase an expensive machine and then have to add unsightly ballast just to make it useable.
I was looking for a lathe with variable speed motor so I could rough out large diameter, rough cut, unbalanced blanks at low speeds and still turn smaller diameter blanks at higher speeds. I was also looking for a lathe with a motor that had enough power so it would not bog down when cutting at the lower speeds.
After reading quite a bit of literature on the subject I decided limit my search to lathes with motors of 1 hp or greater and to ignore the many lathes on the market equipped with 1/2 hp or 3/4 hp motors.
I wanted a machine that had a wide footprint for stability and was heavy enough to dampen vibration when turning uneven stock. Therefore I limited my search by not considering any lathes with light weight stamped steel stands, and I focused my attention on machines with a heavy cast iron bed and heavy cast iron legs.
I also wanted a lathe whose headstock could slide the length of the bed and could rotate through 180 degrees for turning bowls off the edge of the bed so I did not consider any lathes with fixed headstocks.
Other criterion that was important to me was a machine with a large distance between centers so I could turn long spindles. I wanted an economical machine that either ran from, or could be wired for 220 volts which would reduce the load current by half and keep my electrical meter spinning at a much slower rate.
My search eventually led me to the Jet 1442. The Jet 1442 met all of the specifications I was looking for. It has a 1 hp motor, a sliding and rotating headstock, a sturdy tail stock, a continuous cast iron bed and a pair of heavy cast iron legs. The headstock, tailstock, tool rest, and bed weigh in at 200 pounds and the legs add another 160 pounds for a total machine weight of 360 pounds, so it can absorb a great deal of vibration. It has a variable speed motor that can be adjusted in 8 steps through a range of 450 to 3000 RPM. It can swing a 14 inch blank over the bed and a 10 inch blank over the tool rest. The user manual claims it can handle up to 42 inch long blanks. According to the literature you can also purchase a 20 inch bed extension, or a 57 inch bed extension with legs. This gave me a greater sense of security knowing that I would not be locked into a 42 inch bed should I ever need to turn longer spindles. So it gives me room for growth.
The Jet 1442 comes pre-wired for 110 volts but it can be re-wired for 220 volt operation. I also liked the fact that both the headstock and tailstock used MT-2 taper centers, and that the tail stock center travel was specified to be 4 inches.
I first saw the jet 1442 in the showroom of the local Quality Woodworking store and I was very impressed. It was a great deal more massive machine than pictures on the internet would suggest. I left the show room with a fairly high interest in this machine. My interest was tweaked further when Amazon.com began offering the 1442 on sale, with free shipping, coupled with a $25.00 off promotion. My interest was heightened even further after reading all of the very positive 4 star and 5 star reviews on the Amazon website by people who had recently purchased this machine. I finally made the decision to buy this bad boy after I checked my back issues of American Woodworker and found a product comparison article for lathes in the January 2003 edition (pages 88-97). In this comparison a total of 18 lathes were tested and American Woodworker awarded the 1442 the Editors choice award for lathes in the $800 to $1,350 price range. This article featured several of the 1442 attributes, which proved to be very informative and helped me to better understand the quality of the machine.
In all my pre buy research, I did not come across a single negative associated with this lathe, so I took the leap and purchased it. As an added bonus, the price I paid through Amazon was $209 cheaper than what I would have paid had I purchased the showroom machine. After I purchased the lathe the price through Amazon was raised by $157.51 so by placing my order when I did I actually saved $366.51. Every so often a good deal comes our way. In this case, this was my good deal.
___________________________________________________
My Experience with Packing and Shipping
The packing for this heavy machine was excellent. The tool rest, headstock and tailstock came attached to the lathe bed. The entire lathe assembly was wrapped in a very thick plastic cover and packed in one carton. The carton consisted of a well built wooden pallet with a hardwood moisture proofed bed on top. The lathe bed was bolted to the moisture proof bed. The pallet was surrounded by heavy gauge cardboard. Extra thick cardboard stiffeners were added to the inside of the package and then the box was banded to the pallet with two steel bands. The carton was marked as being 215 pounds gross weight. The stiffeners were about 3/4 inch thick. They were so sturdy I decided to keep them and use them as protective pads for the top of my work bench.
The two legs were shipped in a separate heavy card board carton. They were each embedded in thick molded Styrofoam and packaged one on top of the other. This carton was marked as being 160 pounds gross weight.
The delivery truck had a lift gate and a hand operated battery powered forklift. The driver unloaded both cartons and wheeled them into my shop. Because the lathe reached my door step in perfect condition, and since this was the best delivery service I had ever experienced with heavy tools of this type, I gave the driver a big tip, and it was worth it. I have included photos of the packaging in the "User Supplied Pictures" section below Amazon's picture of the lathe

My Thoughts on the Assembly of the Jet 1442
This lathe is a very heavy piece of machinery. If you buy this big boy I strongly suggest you have the help of one other person to assemble it. In my case, I just couldn't wait for another person so I did all the assembly myself. The assembly itself is very simple. There are only 8 bolts and 4 adjustable feet to install. What makes it difficult is the extreme weight of the lathe. There are a couple of tricks I used to get around the weight issue.
First I opened the carton that contained the legs. I turned it on end so the legs were standing vertical, and then pulled each leg out by rocking it forward and out of the carton. The legs are balanced enough to stand on their own so I left them standing on the side of the shop. I then removed the cardboard sides from the lathe carton, which gave me room to remove the tail stock, the tool rest and the head stock from the lathe bed. I then removed the lag bolts that held the bed to the shipping pallet.
Some time ago I built a heavy duty roll around that as luck would have it, was about 2 1/2 inches higher than the legs of the lathe. I lifted the lathe bed up onto the roll around and used it to roll the bed to the area of the shop where the lathe was to be located. I then added the adjustable feet to the legs and teeter-walked them into position beneath the lathe bed.
I placed scraps of wood under the legs to raise them up by about 2 1/2 inches until they mated with the lathe bed. I then bolted the legs to the lathe bed, and removed the roll around. I used two levels placed on the lathe bed, at 90 degrees to one another, and a hydraulic floor jack to raise first one end of the lathe then the other to adjust the feet for level. The floor jack made this leveling operation fast and easy.
I used mineral spirits to clean all the machined cast iron areas of the bed, head stock, tail stock and tool rest, and then I applied a light coat of Johnson and Johnson paste floor wax to keep these areas from rusting.
I then attached the very heavy headstock, the tool rest and the tailstock, plugged it in and verified it worked. Tomorrow morning my back will tell me if I should have had the help of a second person.
After I installed the drive center and spur center I moved the tail stock as close to the head stock as possible until the centers were almost touching one another. I had hoped that the center pins of the two centers would line up perfectly but they did not. The two were misaligned by about a 1/16th inch. I'm not sure how to adjust this and right now I'm not even sure if an adjustment is called for. I think I will seek out more experienced opinions before I do anything.

JET 649005K 22X44 Plus 22-Inch 1-3/4-Horsepower Drum Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase Review

I purchased this drum sander a week ago.
I am rating the Performax 22x44 Plus Drum Sander with Closed Stand.
The stand is completely assembled in the box. This is the first machine that I have assembled and didn't have any extra bolts or washers. Assembly was exactly as it was supposed to be with everything lining up perfectly. All allen wrenches were provided for assembly.
I only had to tighten the brake pedal. The paint job is wonderful.
The motor assembly is extremely heavy, however, I was able to assemble the entire machine in 20 minutes.
I purchased the optional infeed/outfeed tables and think they are great but should cost less than $100, more like $50. No, they should be included, but are not necessary.
Performance: The motor is unbelievable quiet. No vibration at all. It is hard to tell sometimes if the motor is running it is so quiet. I sanded a 14 inch wide board and the results were amazing. Dust collection is a must and my Delta 1200 CFM pulls 99% of the dust.
I use a 30 AMP service for the drum sander.
Drum alignment was spot on. It was only off by .002 of an inch. No adjustment needed at all!
I give it 4 stars because the mobile base moves inline and does not allow you to easily steer the machine. I also wished the conveyor motor was a little beefier. No problems. I just would like the assurance. The motor adjusts from 0 to 10 fpm.
(Update 12-1-06: I received the "handy" tool to assist with sanding belt changes. I COMPLETELY disagree with the instructions for changing the sandpaper on the drum. It is not necessary to use this tool. I and my family think this way is much better: Attach the paper to both sides, but do NOT tighten it on the motor side as instructed. Simply tighten it by hand on the left side where you have much more room and can do it with your fingers. If you own this tool you will see exactly what I am talking about. It is so easy this way.
I am so happy I received this machine. It was given as an early Father's Day gift.
4/09 Update: If I were looking today for a sander, I would take a hard look at Steel City's dual drum sander. You can put two different grits of paper on the machine and really move things along. The price is so close. You also get two four inch dust ports on it. I would buy it now if I didn't already have the Jet/Performax. honestly

Whether you're a hobbyist or serious craftsperson, the JET 649005K 22X44 Plus 22-Inch 1-3/4 HP Drum Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase will provide the smooth, consistent sanding you need to finish projects both big and small. One of the largest sanders available in its class, the 22X44 Plus allows you to sand material up to 44 inches wide with better accuracy than any other sander in its category.
Innovative SandSmart Technology for Automatic Speed RegulationThe 22X44 Plus features Jet's "SandSmart" control that continually monitors the load on the drum motor and automatically regulates the speed of the conveyor motor to maintain the highest feed rate without overload. If the load on the drum motor increases, the SandSmart control will decrease the conveyor feed rate and will stop the conveyor under extreme conditions.
If the load on the drum decreases, SandSmart will increase it faster than the manual setting on the speed adjustment label. This feature works in conjunction with a red indicator light that goes on when the SandSmart control has detected too great a depth of cut and/or too fast a speed rate.
High Capacity for Improved ProductivityThe 22X44 Plus flawlessly sands pieces of stock with a 44-inch width in just two passes, whether you're at the maximum workpiece thickness of four inches or the thinnest, which is 1/32 inch. For added convenience, operation is smooth, quiet, and vibration-free.
"Trackers" and Self-Cooling Drum for Consistent PerformanceJet's patented conveyor belt "trackers" dramatically reduce the need for manual belt adjustments, while the precision-machined, balanced, extruded aluminum drum self-cools to protect the surface being sanded from heat damage.
Sealed Drum Ball Bearings and Reinforced Steel Conveyor Belt for DurabilityBoasting quality construction and materials from top to bottom, the 22X44 Plus is built to last. Sealed and permanently lubricated drum ball bearings ensure longer life, while the precision-flattened, reinforced steel conveyor belt and no-give power feed belt provide a flat, durable sanding surface for better results, job after job.
Cast-Iron Handwheel and Adjustable Drum Height for PrecisionTo ensure precision, the cast-iron handwheel adjusts height at 1/16 inch per turn for sanding thickness control and precise stock removal, and the drum height and downward pressure are both adjustable to virtually eliminate snipe. And to prevent slippage, zinc-plated steel tension rollers mount right next to the drum.
Continuous-Duty Motor for Heavy Use Over Longer PeriodsEquipped with a continuous-duty, 1-3/4 HP motor, the 22X44 Plus is specially designed for heavier use over longer periods of time. This one-feed/one-drive motor model also allows for superior sanding control with a wide range of different wood types.
Operator-Friendly Design Improves ProductivityMade to be operator-friendly, the 22X44 Plus boasts patented abrasive take-up fasteners for quick and easy changes. The on/off switch has overload protection and is front-mounted for accessibility and to help prevent accidental start-ups.
The 22X44 Plus requires minimal assembly, weighs 345 pounds, and is backed by a five-year warranty.

After years of wishing and wanting I was recently fortunate enough to purchase the following JET tools; 6" jointer, 14" bandsaw, dust collector and the new 3 hp left tilt table saw with the router lift. I researched, tested and owned several other brands of tools and settled on JET.
I received the saw in a massive cardboard box on a pallet. The saw was very impressive and easy to set up. The tolerance inspection record showed run-out at 0.0008 and parallelism at 0.0024. My high regard for these tools is somewhat dampened by the reoccurring damage to each tool which seems to have occured during shipping/handleing. Each tool had either scratches/chips or other minor damage to the paint or parts.
This saw is heavy and was placed on a great HTC mobile base. I share my shop in our two car garage and the mobile base is not an option. It is worth every cent! The router lift allows me to have a table mounted router and saves room. The Jessem lift is outstanding in quality, value and performance. No more remeasuring router bit height. I started a journal and recorded the turns of the lift for each piece and bingo...right on for repeatablity! All from the top of the table too!
After getting the shop wired for 220 volts I was able to test the saw. This saw screams to life but is quiet! I can carry on a normal conversation while the saw is running. I equiped the saw with the new CMT general 40 tooth blade. What a combination, perfect glass smooth cuts! There are no rattles, wobbles or vibrations. This machine not only passes the nickle test while running but when stopping AND starting too!!! Power is unlimited with no sign of stalling.
Everything about this saw screams quality and puts out for HUNDREDS of dollars less than the competition (if there is any). JET needs to take a serious look at improving packaging to insure these quality tools arrive as expected.
With the exception of the troubeling minor damage the fit and finish/quality is outstanding. I still rate this saw with ***** stars, will buy more JET products and recommend them to others!!!!!

As a home-business owner, I have some pretty big concerns in my budget and do my research for tools. I owned a $100 tablesaw I bought from the hardware store, and have had problems with the blades / spindle not cutting accurately. After going to all the hardware stores in the area, I found the problem was the same with all saws in the class. The direct-drive saws present issues keeping the blades rigid. This tablesaw from Jet was the only one with a belt-drive, that took the tension off the motor spindle allowing it to remain rigid and reduce viabration. It is also supported by all the accessories that Jet sells that are compatible with it. For the price, in its class - it is the best, simply because it uses the v-belt design on the spindle.

JET JJP-12 12-Inch Jointer Planer Review

JET JJP-12 12-Inch Jointer Planer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I struggled a bit to decide whether to rate this 4 or 5 stars, but in the end decided on 5 based on value for the money.
The machine is quite well-made. Plenty of power, smooth operation, generally good fit and finish. It produces good results. One thing I particularly appreciate in this machine is that the dust collection hood is shallow enough that you don't have to crank the planer table too far down when switching over to jointer mode. I like the single handle table lift. Table adjustment is smooth and easy. The dust collection works very well.
I don't like a few things. First, I dislike the Euro-style guard, but that's just preference. Second, the grind on the tables is unusual - sort of a cross-hatched ripple. It actually works very well and eliminates the suction drag you get on some jointers and planers with polished tables. It was a pain in the neck to clean when the machine arrived, though! Last, and most seriously, the fence is minimal and hard to adjust. Its support is sheet metal and the fence is a medium-weight extrusion. The support uses multiple locking knobs, and the fence itself is easy to twist. You need to check the angle (or for square) at several points after adjusting it. How serious this is depends on your use. As I only use the fence at 90 degrees, it was acceptable as it is solid and stable once set.
The footprint of this machine is new for Jet, and there isn't a mobile base listed specifically for it in the market for it as of this writing.
This is a lot of machine for the money - even at list price. Its closest competition is Grizzly's G0633, which is comparably-priced when you factor in shipping. As I was able to buy the Jet on sale and with no shipping charges at considerably less than the Grizzly, the decision was easy. I would buy it again. Is it a Mini-Max, Felder, or even a Laguna or Rojek? No, but it's not priced like them either, which gets it 5 stars. If Jet were to incorporate a better fence, it would get the 5 stars without the qualifier comments.
UPDATE - In response to another reviewer regarding lack of planer table adjustments: READ YOUR MANUAL! The table is EASILY adjusted using the 4 setscrews provided for the purpose in the column support.

Combining a jointer and a planer into one machine, the Jet JJP-12 12-Inch Jointer Planer is a powerful, space-saving tool ideal for creating an even surface and thickness on your work piece. Custom built for smooth transition between functions, it ensures precise cuts with features including three high-quality knives, an adjustable outfeed table for supporting long work pieces, and large, ergonomic knobs for extra-fine adjustment control.
The switch from jointer to planer is quick, easy, and tool-free.Versatile Combination Saves Space and TimeAny woodworker, whether building a backyard deck or a commercial structure, will appreciate the Jet JJP-12's all-in-one, precision-cut capability. This machine makes a no-tool switch from jointer to planer in just a few quick motions, allowing you the capabilities of both machines without compromising your work space.
Both functions offer a full 12-inch width capacity and 55-inch tables, so no extra ripping process is needed when you switch between modes. And, in addition to its compact bench-top design, a rugged steel stand is included for those times floor positioning is more convenient.
Easy-Handling Adjustments for Maximum AccuracyThe Jet JJP-12's oversized handwheel and knobs fit comfortably in your hand, allowing for extremely fine-tuned adjustments. The wide-spaced handles make it easy to stabilize stock to the heavy-duty, 43-by-6-inch fence. Particularly handy for complex projects, the fence stays in place between function changes and sets easily for bevel cuts up to 45 degrees.
Expert Materials Offer Enhanced OperationThe Jet JJP-12 runs on a heavy-duty 13 Amp motor, supplying the power you need for a variety of cutting applications. Its table top is precision-flattened to ensure a smooth, even cut. The tough, cast-iron infeed and outfeed tables adjust individually to give the work piece superior support. Cutting is performed with three top-quality knives, which are fitted to the high-speed steel cutter head.
The JJP-12 also includes a premium dust collection shroud, which rotates in both settings and has a standard four-inch outlet port, allowing for efficient dust collection that cuts your clean-up time to a minimum.
Top-Notch Features for Safe, Consistent WoodworkingDuring jointer operation, the bridge-style cutter guard's base-located adjustment knob allows wood to pass evenly beneath the guard, preventing you from pushing down directly over the cutter. The planer function's cutter head prevents kickback with gravity-operated fingers, while its metal infeed roller and rubber-coated outfeed roller maintain a consistent non-marring feed rate.
For both operation modes, security is a no-brainer, thanks to the self-engaging locks that fall into place when you make the switch between functions. For your additional safety, the magnetic on/off switch has a built-in limiter to prevent start-up after power outages and while you switch between modes.
The JJP-12 is backed by a five year warranty.

JET 708596K JSG-96OS 6-Inch/9-Inch 3/4-Horsepower Open Stand Belt/Disc Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase Review

JET 708596K JSG-96OS 6-Inch/9-Inch 3/4-Horsepower Open Stand Belt/Disc Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I rec'd the sander a few days ago. It went together easy. It was quite heavy. Unless you've got some muscles, get some help placing the sander body on the stand.
The stand is solid and doesn't take up much floor space. There are pre-drilled carriage-bolt holes in the legs if you want to add your own lower shelf. I plan to do that at a later date but I thought it would be nice if Jet included the horizontal supports for such a shelf with the stand. Not a big negative just a suggestion. The stand comes with rubber-cushioned leveling feet unlike some of the other stands I've purchased in the past. It was a nice touch.
Other than the stand, essentially the only assembly needed is to attach the work tables to the sander body. The instructions are pretty good and they show in some detail how you get the tables lined up square to the sanding surfaces. I had a little trouble getting the belt sander work surface to go on smoothly but after making some adjustments to the 90 degree stops, it seemed to go on more easily.
The unit runs smoothly and with about as much noise as I would expect with a sander, although the graphite belt sander platen seems to make a little more "whooshing" sound when it starts up. The graphite is supposed to make it run cooler. I haven't confirmed that but it makes sense. There aren't any undue vibrations. Not having owned a stationary belt sander before this one (but I have used several) releasing the belt tension was new for me but makes sense. It's recommended so the belt doesn't take on an excessively oval shape or wear out prematurely. It's easy to do but I find that I have to line up the belt on the rollers before I move the tension arm back. Easy to do, just something to remember if you plan to release the tension when the machine is off.
The belt sander will lay flat if you need to do some surface sanding. There's a horizontal stop but no vertical stop. However, eyeball vertical is fine since the work surface moves with the belt assembly and as such stays perpendicular.
The disc sander is great for me. 9 inche diameter is all I need. I've considered 12 inch disc sanders but this machine gets the job done. I build furniture, cabinets and various (larger) craft items and I expect that it will handle my needs.
Adjusting the work surfaces requires some patience but wasn't too difficult. For example, if you want to change the angle on the belt sander work surface, you need to loosen two locking handles and line up the angle that you need while maintaining a gap between the table and the sanding belt. I find that when I tightened the right-side locking handle, it pulls the table toward the belt. I don't use the belt sander at other that 90 degrees too often, so I don't expect this to be a big deal for me. The disc sander work surface on the other hand is a breeze to adjust. There's an angle indicator on the table, so once the index is set to zero for perpendicular, moving to any other angle is a snap....
The 3/4 hp motor has yet to bog down on me. It seems adequately beefy so far.
I think this is a great sander. I've considered spending some money on Jet's larger sander and others in that class and was also considering other brands with lower priced units ... but when Jet re-released this machine, it didn't take long for me to make up my mind. As I use the sander more, I'll add more comments, but I expect to be very happy with my purchase and expect most other woodworkers would be happy as well.
Nice job to Jet on this one. I give it 5 stars for quality and value.
====
Update in 2010 (8 years later):
Just a follow up. The sander is still working great. I do use it fairly often (belt side mostly) so it seems to have held up well. Have not had any wear issues on the table adjustments. I have yet to change the sanding disc but belt changes are easy. I never got around to adding a shelf under the unit. And related to that, the legs are more than stable enough without any lower braces. So I'm pretty happy. I expect to get many more years from the sander.

To enhance dust collection and safety, a hinged door covers the lower portion of the sanding disc. Opening the door provides easy access to the complete disc for replacement of the abrasive.
Belt Section Offers Maximum VersatilityMeasuring 6 x 48 inches, the sanding belt runs at 2,258 SFPM (surface feet per minute) and offers plenty of surface area to handle the big jobs. Its overall size also allows you to distribute wear over a larger area, which substantially increases the life of the abrasive.
For added convenience, the belt runs on high-quality rollers, mounted in a fully adjustable arm for maximum versatility. A rubber-coated drive drum helps to maintain belt speed.
Cast-Iron Sanding Disc Table for Stability and FlexibilityThe cast-iron sanding disc table measures 10 inches wide and 12 inches in length, and has lots of surface area to help support large work pieces. The table also features a unique curved shape that makes it easy to use in a wide range of sanding operations. It's also fully adjustable and tilts up to 45 degrees. For added convenience, a handy scale under the table shows the current amount of tilt and makes setting specific angles fast and easy.
Disc Table Mount for Increased VersatilityTo make the belt even more versatile, a mount for the disc table can be used at the belt as well (the belt table must be removed). This is particularly useful when using the center point device or sanding an odd-shaped work piece.
Miter Gauge and Pivoting Fence for User-Friendly OperationThe JSG-96OS comes with a full-featured miter gauge, and a fence measuring 5.5 x 2 inches tall to securely hold stock or attach shop-made jigs. This fence also pivots 60 degrees to the right or left and is locked with the twist of the push handle. Finally, the miter gauge has a steel guide bar fitted with a T-slot follower that prevents lifting or rocking during sanding.
The JSG-96OS is backed by a five-year warranty.

While I'm pleased with my purchase, I am not pleased with the condition of the product when it arrived. The box had 3 holes in it, and the chip tray was dented in 3 out of the 4 corners. Bottom line to the problem was lack of packing material in the box.

JET JWBS-16B 16-Inch 1-1/2 HP 1Ph 115-Volt Wood Band Saw Review

I'm a retired home woodworker who has been using a 25 year old Craftsman bandsaw and wanted to upgrade. Through circumstances, I got a deal on the Jet 16 inch that I could not refuse and am glad I didn't. I wanted to have the capability to resaw 10 inch boards and this seemed to be a better quality alternative to using an extender on a 14 inch model. I understand that saws using extenders have some flex and that this single piece unit does not. It comes with a 3/4 inch blade that does decent resawing. While I haven't tried 10 inch resawing yet, it did a nice job resawing oak to get 1/4 thick boards for use in boxes. Because of the course blade, the oak needed some jointing and sanding to finish but that is to be expected. I have not tried cutting veneer yet but I think it should do the job.
Some points:
o The carton weighs about 330 pounds and is full size because of the solid frame. You'll definitely need a helper to get it where you want it.
o Putting it together is no big deal. Just clean off the protective gunk on the table, mount the table, base extension, fence and tune it up using standard bandsaw tuneup techniques. This is a one person job.
o This model does not have the speed tension release used on the larger models. You have to turn the wheel to release the blade. This is not a problem for me but if you change blades a lot, you might want to consider the larger models. I have not yet seen an after market speed release for this saw.
o The Euro style blade guides seem to work fine and are definitly better than metal blocks.
All in all, I am well pleased with this saw. It is a solid piece of equipment capable of precision.

Packed with innovative features, including a rigid triangular frame, European-style blade guides, and a tilting cast-iron table, the Jet JWBS-16B 16-Inch 1-1/2 HP 1Ph 115/230-Volt Wood Band Saw couples precision with stability. The band saw's heavy-duty 1-1/2 HP TEFC motor, together with its innovative triangular column design, delivers the powerful and steady performance you need for a variety of woodworking tasks.
Dependable blade guides help you achieve precision results. The Stability of Triangular Column TechnologyThe Jet JWBS-16B is a versatile, modern band saw well-suited for professional as well as domestic woodworking applications. Its triangular column design--which includes an ultra-rigid, one-piece steel column that runs the full height of the band--both increases the saw's blade-tension resistance and reduces unwanted rotation deflection. Welded with heavy-gauge steel, the column is an exceptionally stable platform for the saw's blade-wheel mounts and drive systems.
For superior versatility, the band saw's ample 10-inch resaw capacity makes it ideal for slicing veneers and cutting large stock and book-matched panels, while its full-sized (3/4 x 3/8-inch) miter slot accommodates most miter gauges and accurately guides shop-made jigs and fixtures.
European-Style Carbide Blade Guides for Precise ControlThe band saw's sophisticated blade guides stabilize performance by controlling side-to-side blade play, providing micro-adjustable control and regulating thrust forces. The blade guides are forged from long-lasting carbide and, best of all, require no tools for adjustment.
The band saw features computer-balanced band wheels, which employ a flywheel effect to produce smooth cutting action without vibration, and a large (17 x 17-inch) tilting cast-iron table with knobs that lock securely at any angle. The versatile table tilts up to 45 degrees to the right and 10 degrees to the left. Plus, the heavy-duty guide post has both rack and pinion adjustment for additional blade support, and the base is pre-drilled with holes for securing your band saw firmly to the floor.
User-Friendly Features for Effortless Blade AdjustmentAll the handwheels on the band saw are constructed from high-grade cast iron, meaning blade adjustments are smooth and easy. The handy trunnion scale lets you set specific table angles, while a direct-reading scale lets you select blade tension for widths up to 1-1/4 inch. And the blade-tracking adjustment window eliminates guesswork by providing a direct view to your blade positioning.
For added convenience, a foot brake is provided for making rapid stops, and the included four-inch dust port connects easily to a standard dust collector without requiring adapters, so you enjoy efficient dust cleanup while you work.
The JWBS-16B is backed by a five year warranty.

I've owned this band saw for a year. Before purchasing, I researched others, including Delta, Grizzly, Ridgid, and General. I've written this review to answer the kind of questions I had when I was still shopping for a band saw!
Assembly is simple. The manual contains photos of each step, with hardware and parts clearly visible. Aligning the upper and lower wheels is no problem -- they were aligned perfectly out of the box. Installing the rip fence is also easy -- all the mounting hardware are designed for this machine.
In your daily band saw setup routine, there are five main steps: (1) Install blade; (2) Tension blade; (3) "track" blade; (4) adjust blade guard; (5) adjust guides. These are typical steps in setting up any band saw, but the Jet is easier than other 14" saws.

Installing and/or removing blades on the Jet 14" is easy. The upper and lower guides loosen up, and the blade slips out through the table without a problem. When installing a new blade, it's easy to guide it into the blade guard, mount it on the two wheels, and center it. Hint: when installing a blade, make sure the teeth are pointing DOWNward. Every new band saw owner installs a band saw blade upside down once.
With your blade centered on the wheels, use the tension knob to tighten the blade to the correct level. Jet designed the tension knob so it is above the wheel cover. This sounds like a small detail, but other brands position the tension knob so you bang your knuckles against the metal as you turn it -- very annoying. There's a tension indicator showing blade width. According to the manufacturer, you can use blades from 1/8" to 3/4", but 1/2" is the widest I've used.
With the blade tensioned, adjust the "tracking" (removes any blade wobble). Jet has designed a great system for adjusting tracking. First, loosen a wing nut. Then, spin one of the wheels with your hand. As you spin the wheel, turn the tracking knob one way or another until you see that the blade stays in the center of the wheel. Then tighten the wing nut again, and you're done. This saw holds its tracking setting, even after hours of use.
The next step is to adjust the blade guard. Jet's blade guard is a step ahead of the other brands. Loosen a knob, then set the blade guard for the proper height (I set mine about 1/8" above the wood). What sets the Jet apart is that, even with the blade guard knob loosened, the blade guard stays in place if you let go of it. With the Delta, when you loosen the blade guard, it crashes down onto the table. The engineers at Jet were smart to design their blade guard differently -- it saves crushed fingers and dented wood!
Next, adjust the saw guides. Again, the Jet 14" is easier than others. The upper and lower guides are both very accessible. For both the upper and lower guides, there are side supports and a rear roller. To adjust the rear roller, loosen a wing nut, then turn a thumb screw until the guide is set, then re-tighten the wing nut. For the side supports, first position it properly frontwards and backwards, then push the block against the blade. For frontward/backward adjustment, there is a wing nut/thumb screw system; to set the blocks against the blade, loosen a couple of screws, slide the blocks, and re-tighten the screws. All of this is engineered well on the Jet, making the adjustments go quickly.
The rip fence that comes with this saw is solid and locks down securely. The design of the fence is almost like Jet's table saw fences. The fence comes with two steel rails, which bolt onto the table, one in front and one in back. The front rail has a built-in measure, and a pointer on the fence allows you to read precise inch marks. This fence is very accurate, and holds its settings, even after running several pieces through the saw. The fence comes with a re-saw feature, a "peg-style" attachment.
Ripping straight lines on this saw is a pleasant task. You read all the time about "blade drift," but if you take the time to set up this saw as described above, there's no blade drift. For cutting curves, I use a 1/8" blade and find it easy to follow my guidelines. The saw feels smooth and safe. The table on this saw is a couple of inches larger than other models -- a plus when working with bigger pieces of wood.
This saw has adequate power for everything I've cut. On 1X material, the saw cuts without bogging down, even when pushing the wood quickly. Even using inexpensive blades, the saw cuts smoothly. With Timberwolf blades, I've noticed smoother cuts.
The best test of band saw power is re-sawing. I've used the Jet 14" to re-saw up to 5" wide, using 1/2" blades. Push the wood slowly when re-sawing hardwoods such as oak. Don't try to rush this saw when re-sawing wide boards because it will bog down a bit. If I feed the wood at an even, slow pace, it's not a problem. I've used this saw to slice off 1/16" veneer, and it's performed well. Again, the blade you use makes a difference. With the right blade, very little sanding is needed.
Dust collection is, at best, decent. None of the 14" band saws I tested had adequate dust collection. The good thing is, a band saw does not produce much dust.
This saw has been a terrific addition to my woodshop. In almost every wood project I do, I have come to rely on this band saw to play a major role.

Buying a lathe it one of the hardest decisions you will make in putting a shop together. The possibilities are endless, and, as you move up the price curve the cost of a misjudgment can get terrifying. Unless you are willing to settle for a mini-lathe (Jet makes several good lathes in that category as well) the bigger a lathe you can buy (up to a limit) the happier you will be in the long run.
The 1642, right in the middle of the price range can turn up to a 16" inch diameter bowl and up to 40+ inches in length - in other words, a small log - is one possibility you should seriously consider. At 400+ pounds it is solid enough to dampen vibration without taking a crew to assemble or move it. With a 1-1/2 horsepower motor it has enough power to do just about everything you might want to do.
Spindle speed is controlled by a two-position belt drive (0 - 1700 rpm or 0 - 3200 rpm) and is continuously variable over those ranges. While variable speed isn't a necessity, it's amazing how quickly you learn to depend on the ability to change speed as you turn. This is a superior piece of equipment and to get something better you would have to spend at least twice as much.
There are exactly two things I don't like about this lathe. One is trivial, I would have likes an optional hand turning wheel instead of having to grab a cylindrical turning bar to turn the work about manually. This is only a problem with pieces that are too small to grab onto - like pen mandrels. The other issue is that, to turn a bowl over 16" you have to run the head to the other end of the lathe, rather than turn it in place. This means the lathe takes up a bit more space and is slightly less convenient. But if you are working in that size range you probably should be looking at a more specialized tool.
I would rate this a best buy for the amateur through semi-professional woodshop. I've been using one for a while now, and I've had no reason to regret the decision. Keep in mind that, whatever lathe you buy, your next really big expense will be equipping it with all the neat gadgets that make woodturning a world of it's own.

There's also a push-button spindle lock on the front of the headstock for a simple, tool-free way to temporarily lock the spindle when you install or remove the faceplate, chuck, or other screw-on accessories.
Heavy-Gauge Wire Guard for SafetyA special mount on the rear of the headstock accepts a heavy-gauge wire guard (included), and a spring-loaded pin indexes the guard up or down to make mounting and removing turned objects easy. This guard also serves as a protective shield between the work and the operator, when large chips and chunks generated while turning blanks can turn into dangerous projectiles.
User-Friendly Controls, LED, and Toggle SwitchDesigned to be user-friendly, the JWL-1642EVS features dial-operated, infinite speed controls conveniently located on the front of the headstock. A large digital LED readout makes monitoring the spindle speed easy and very accurate, while the toggle switch on the front panel allows selecting forward and reverse spindle directions. Finally, a large-diameter pull on/push off button (also on the front panel) is easily accessible no matter your operating position.
Large Tailstock for StabilityThe JWL-1642EVS has a large tailstock with the mass and wide base to generate the stability you need. The large ram has a full four-inch travel, operated by an easy-to-turn, five-inch diameter handwheel fitted with a spinner handle, the popular #2 Morse taper, and a 3/8-inch diameter through hole, which is convenient for drilling lamp bases. Finally, like the tool-rest base, a large handle makes it easy to lock the tailstock securely in place.
Ball bearing Live Center and Cast Iron Tool Rest Base for VersatilityThe JWL-1642EVS comes with a high-end, multi-row ball bearing live center with a screw-on, large-diameter cone for projects like peppermills and boxes, and a cast-iron tool-rest base designed to be very rigid, easy to position, and thanks to its comfortably long handle, very easy to lock in position.
The JWL-1642EVS measures 29 x 28 x 59 inches (WxHxL), weighs 410 pounds, and is covered by a five-year warranty.
