DELTA 22-540 12-Inch Portable Planer Review

DELTA 22-540 12-Inch Portable Planer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned the 22-540 for five years. When I purchased the machine, I was attracted by the low price and the fact that there were few alternatives on the market at that time, unless you wanted to purchase a 15 inch stationary planer. This model represented Delta's original foray into the market and this model has needed modifications in its design. The fact that it has dropped about $150 in price over the last five years is indicative of how overpriced it originally was and how it currently compares to the competition. My complaints about this machine: 1. Poor infeed and outfeed support result in serious sniping 2.There is no lock on the thickness adjustment and if you plane multiple boards, the cutter head backs off and the thickness will vary between the first and last boards you plane on the same setting. 3. It is somewhat difficult to replace the spring-mounted blades and you need to purchase a set of magnetic blade holders in order to get both blades set at the same height on either end. 4. The blades dull very quickly and it would be preferable to have an option of carbide blades because of the amount of time required to change the blades. 5. The machine really labors when planing wider boards and has a tendency to run the boards through at an angle rather than parallel to the sides of the planer. There are much better models which are available today and unless you plan to do a very limited amount of planing, you would be better off to spend a little more money and purchase a better piece of equipment.

DELTA 36-136 Universal Miter Saw Stand Review

DELTA 36-136 Universal Miter Saw Stand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Delta has a blue-ribbon winner with this stand. Click on Customer Photos to see various views of this wonderful product...
Pros:
- I own a Trojan MS2000 Miter Saw Stand, and was impressed that after rolling it (with the saw mounted) to the site, I could unfold it in place in 30 seconds. By contrast, the Delta stand can be unfolded in under 3 seconds. I've timed it. Release the locking lever, pull up on the handle, and it locks in place. That's it. With the Trojan, there is a chance the entire rig could fall over, as that stand has to be set on one end with a mounted saw, and held there so it doesn't fall over, while you lock the leg-spreader bar, then pull the whole assembly upright. With the Delta, there's nothing awkward and virtually zero chance of the whole thing falling over. It takes 2 or 3 seconds to lower the Delta stand from the top position (34" off the floor). When folded down, there is a positive pin lock that prevents self-opening. That middle position is presumably designed to hold a portable table saw, which have higher work surfaces than miter saws or planers. The stand uses a gas-assisted piston device to aid in raising and lowering - same technology that's used on many cars to raise and hold-up, the hood.
- Fold up the stand and it becomes a hand-truck with your tool mounted; move the "hand-truck" using the large handle (it's the curved foot when the stand is open).
- When done with the stand, lower it, roll it away, and set it on end for storage, resting it on the stand's "foot" and wheels. When stored this way, it leans back at an 82 degree angle (to prevent it from falling forward), and takes little floor space.
- Most other stands have a board of some type on top, where you cut holes to match the hold-down bolts for the tool to mount. The Delta has four adjustable hold-down points with a slot to receive a bolt. Simply align them with the tool's bolt holes, tighten them in place with the supplied Allen wrench, and bolt your tool down with the supplied carriage bolts & wing-nuts. The stand's top is 18" x 32", so any tool smaller than those dimensions should fit.
- Most folks buying this stand will probably use it for miter-type saws. However, it can also be used for portable planers, and other tools.
- Like the Trojan, when the stand is opened, the wheels stay on the ground. This allows the stand to be moved after it's in place. Since this rig can be lowered and raised in mere seconds, movement while opened isn't as important as with other stands. However, by having it's wheels on the ground at all times, plus a wide tubular bar on the other end, rather than vertical legs that could sink into soft soil, the Delta is unusually stable on grass or other soft surfaces.
- Impressive quality. The tubular steel is thick (.070") and strong; the 8" diameter soft-rubber tires are mounted on wheels with inner and outer ball bearings; the welds are very well done, the frame has an attractive powder-coated light gray paint with the top painted black; the plastic end caps on the ends of the curved leg are screwed on, rather than press fit.
- The stand is well protected for shipment. Mine arrived in perfect condition, with all parts.
- Assembly instructions were easy to understand and everything fit. However, in my opinion, Delta should tell you to mount the wheel axle with the threaded end on the inside of the wheel. Delta's approach is the opposite, and would result in unused bolt threads poking out beyond the tire edge, which could catch on things as you roll it, such as door molding.
- This stand is a bargain, considering comparable devices cost more.
- There is an adjustable roller at each end of the stand. It adjusts up/down, side to side, and in/out. In the closest-to-the saw position, each roller is 17" from the center of the stand. Fully open, each roller is 44" from the center, or 88" from side to side (not the 8' claimed by Delta, but...., so what.)
- The stand can support up to 300 lbs., which should be more than sufficient for any bench-top tool. I also use it as a portable work-table (clamping, sanding, painting, etc.). Plenty of folding tables out there, but this one has wheels and is heavy-duty.
Cons:
- On the Trojan, the inner-most rollers stay put, and it only takes a few seconds to raise the wings to be level with the mounted tool; it's then ready to use. With the Delta, if you move an adjustable roller to the side, the end will droop. To make the roller level with the tool's table, you'll then have to raise the roller slightly (accomplished with a single knob). Then, when you slide the roller assembly back into the stand, the roller top may have to be adjusted again to match the tool's table top. This added time required to readjust the rollers could be an important consideration for professionals that use the stand every day; less so for someone who only uses the stand occasionally.
- Some brands of stands have wings offering more support members for the piece being cut, than the Delta. E.g., each of the Trojan wings has two rollers and one cross-piece for support. In addition, the Trojan wings extend 13' from side to side, versus 8' (88" actually) on the Delta.
- The stand is a tad low for very tall users. E.g., with a Dewalt DW708 sliding compound saw mounted, the saw's table is 37.5" off the floor. A DW708 table on a Trojan MS-2000 stand is 39" off the floor.
- Stands with 10-inch pneumatic tires (like the Trojan) are easier to pull up a staircase. Delta's 8-inch solid tire more easily catches on the nose of each tread, if said nose extends past the riser. Also, the stand's folded length can make for precarious turning on a 2-level staircase. The worst scenario is if when a staircase lacks risers and the tires hang-up under each tread; so, a helper is pretty much mandatory.
- The stand itself is a hefty 74 lbs., so it's no lightweight. (Of course, the reason is the heavy tubular steel frame and all-metal tool support top.) The box from Amazon weighed 83 lbs. If a heavy tool is mounted on the stand, and you have a sore back, you might need help to raise it, and especially if you're trying to lift it into an SUV or to a truck bed.
- One of the quickest ways way to clean off any tool and the stand after it's packed with sawdust is to blow it off with compressed air. However, this stand's top metal channels catch and hold sawdust that take additional time to clean out. Wear a respirator.
- On stands with a board on top, that portion of the board not covered by the tool's base can be used to hold pencils, tape measures, etc. You'd have to add your own board to the Delta if you wanted a "table" area.
Summary:
This a brilliantly designed, engineered, and manufactured, universal tool stand. As of this writing, it is a technological leap over much of the competition, and a "best buy" due to the price. This model should be on your short list.

I own 4 of these, partly because they are not industrial-grade like a Target tile saw. The belts and parts wear out quickly, and so we have a high maintainence cost, but this saw custs things that nothing else will. If your intention is to cut intricate shapes, this will do it, but treat it with care. Never broke a blade, after thousands of hours of cutting marble and tile.

Porter-Cable CFNBNS 3-Nailer and Compressor Combo Kit Review

Porter-Cable CFNBNS 3-Nailer and Compressor Combo Kit

I have had these nail guns for several years. I purchased the set without the staple gun for $299. This is an incredible bargain and you will find thousands of uses for these nail guns. I use the 18 gauge nailer the most to assist with glue ups. I have never had a jam with any PC nail gun that I use. (knock on wood) The compressor is a little loud for my tastes. If you will use this in an enclosed area like a basement, I suggest making a cabinet for it to muffle the sound. Fine Woodworking magazine - Tools & Shops annual issue- on page 106 gives an illustration of how to make one. It works.
December 7, 2008 Update: I have used my compressor for endless hours. I drain the compressor before and after each use. I have yet to experience any problems after all these years.
Update: 1-9-09: I still am completely satisfied with this tool kit. I have yet to have any problems from the compressor or nail guns.

Makita LS1013FL 15 Amp 10-Inch Dual Bevel Compound Sliding Miter Saw with Laser and Fluorescent Light Review

Makita LS1013FL 15 Amp 10-Inch Dual Bevel Compound Sliding Miter Saw with Laser and Fluorescent Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I needed a saw when my old DeWalt 708 slider was in the shop for bearing replacement. I considered buying another DeWalt but the new model is not as nice as the old 708. I have the opportunity to use all of the comparable high end saws that my co-workers use. I did not choose the Hitachi because the dinky table makes it difficult to cut wide stock accurately. The laser on the Hitachi does not shine on the leading edge of the piece either.
The Makita laser is better because it will shine on the front edge of the piece. That makes it nice when cutting bevels. Recently I was cutting beveled siding and I needed the piece to be cut with the finish side down so the exposed cut would be square. I needed to mark the bottom of the leading edge. When using the Hitachi, the laser was not shining on the edge so I had to line the cut the old way by bending over and sighting down the blade.
The laser on the Makita will not move far enough over to line exactly on the mark. It needs to move another 32nd of an inch to line up. I may be able to fix that with a file when I have time. You can easily move the laser to either side of the cut.
The saw was easy to calibrate. It did not need much. The 0 degree bevel was perfect out of the box. The 45 degree right and left just needed to be tuned a hair.
The blade that comes with the saw makes very smooth cuts. There is no need to buy a Forrest blade like I had to with my DeWalt. I miss the high fence that comes on the Dewalt. The Makita only has a high fence on one side. You can buy a high fence for the right side.
The guard works nicely and you can see through it by means of a slot. No more bending over to see the blade on the mark. The Hitachi does not have a slot so you have to bend down to see the blade on the mark after the guard is old and opaque. Because of this there are some carpenters who remove the guard and that is not good.
The dust collection on the Makita is very good. The bag fills up frequently. The dust collection on my DeWalt is non existent. I would prefer a zipper on the dust bag instead of the slotted tube.
The table on the Makita is one of the nicer tables out there. It is very wide and stable. It swings smoothly and locks with a quick twist. The saw bevel release has been improved from the earlier Makitas. You no longer have to bump the saw hard to move it out of the 0 degree detent.
The soft start prevents the saw from jumping when it starts up. I always wait a moment with any saw before plunging the blade.
The little light, although not very bright is a nice feature when working inside.
This saw is much lighter than my DeWalt 708.
I have had this saw for about two months now and so far it is a pleasure to use. No complaints. Five Stars

Hitachi C10RB 10-Inch Portable Jobsite Table Saw with Stand Review

Hitachi C10RB 10-Inch Portable Jobsite Table Saw with Stand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While shopping for table saws the most important factors I considered were: value, portability, ease of use, and accuracy. After comparrison shopping I found this saw to be an incredible value at $279. As for portability this saw without stand weighs in around 53 pounds which makes it easy on the back. All the controls are upfront and easy to use and I had no problem setting this saw up right out of the box without the manual. The only draw back... accuracy. After attaching the factory blade and ripping a few boards I was fairly disappointed with my cuts, however realizing that the factory blade was rather cheap, I went down to the local hardware store and picked up a freud diablo blade and slapped it on and realligned everything. After that this saw cuts like a dream. In conclusion you get a lot of bang for your buck with this saw, I would just recommend upgrading the cheap factory blade for a better one.

Grizzly G1066R 24" Drum Sander Review

Grizzly G1066R 24 Drum Sander
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A little trouble with the first shipment but could have been a ups issue. as far as the sander it works great. But expect a lot of set-up time. I probably spent a day on set-up but I'm very precise about my tools. Put casters on this bad boy, it weighs a lot. As far as sanding, it does an excellent job, super smooth after a couple of passes. Mine came with 60 and 100 grit paper on first and second drum, I changed it to 80/120 to get it ready for the random orbit sander for the final surface. Dust collection is not the best. I have it right beside my 1600cfm collector with 2 hoses, it gets the fine airbourne dust but leaves a lot on the wood and conveyor to fall off on the floor. The main thing this beast could use is some way of determining the set-up height. You have to push your wood in with the machine off and adjust by feel. It has plenty of power, never had it even grunt the least. The sandpaper attachment doesn't keep the paper tight enough for me so I spray the back of the sandpaper with contact adhesive just before rolling it on and then tape the ends with packing tape. I still have 24" of sanding because the rollers are about 25" to 25 1/2" long. I've had the machine for about six months and had no trouble. I find myself running everything through it from boards to gluded panels-(which I bought it for). Leaves edges square too. If your like me and can't justify a wide belt sander, I would recommend this powerful sander, and buy it again.

Tormek 2006 Super Grind, Includes How-To Video Review

Tormek 2006 Super Grind, Includes How-To Video
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Tormek 2004 grinder is recommended by several woodworking magazines as the best tool sharpening system on the market. The reasons are simple. Tormek has created a desceptively simple design and built the machine with quality parts to make it perform properly. The machine addresses the two main issues of sharpening, angle and temper.
In all sharpening operations, the tool must be held at a rigid angle to prevent rounding over the edge. This is difficult for the experienced and impossible for the novice. Tormek addresses this problem with an adjustible bar held rigid in a heavy steel casing. Special jigs hold every tool imaginable at the exact angle you select with an easy to use angle measuring device that comes with the grinder. Once the tool is ground to the final dimension, the wheel is graded to effectively make the grit finer and, without changing ANY settings, the tool is fine ground in less than 30 seconds. The last step is to buff off the small burr created at the edge to create an edge that will shave the hairs off your arm.
The second issue I mentioned above is temper. In the past, all sharpening operations were usually done sloooowly to prevent heat buildup at the fragile edge. If steel was removed too quickly, the edge would overheat and the tool would be destroyed. Tormek addresses this problem with a water bath that continuously bathes the wheel. The result is remakably fast metal removal with NO heat buildup.
In closing whether you are experienced or a novice, if you wish to sharpen vertually every tool in your shop to truely razor sharp edges that will cause envy amoung your friends, THIS is IT.

Package includes free Chisel & Plane Iron Jig, Pro Anglemaster, Horizontal Tool Rest Base, Universal Support with micro-adjust and Tormek DVD. We've never seen an easier, more efficient way to sharpen cabinetmaking tools, turning and carving tools, knives, and practically anything else to a razor edge--even jointer and planer knives. The Swedish-made Tormek 2006 runs a water-cooled 220-grit aluminum oxide grinding wheel which restores damaged edges and reshapes bevels with absolutely no risk of overheating and damaging even the most delicate steel. The wheel rotates at a genteel 90 rpm, slow enough to avoid slinging water at you but fast enough, given its 10" diameter, to grind quite respectably. You could grind faster on a bench grinder with good wheels, but then you'd miss Tormek's ingenious next step, turning the grinder into a sharpener and power strop which can polish any cutting edge to a mirror shine in seconds.Standard equipment includes a new micro-adjustable 11" tool rest and an SVH60 Chisel and Plane Iron Jig (maximum 2-3/8" wide by 1/2" thick). Getting plane irons square is nearly inevitable. Bevel-edged chisels are easily perfected by varying the pressure on the two jig knobs until the grind shows you've gotten it right. Tormek's WM200 Pro Anglemaster makes setting grinding angles a snap. It sets any angle from 15° to 75° and features built-in adjustment for different wheel diameters from 10" down to 6". Thus you can maintain accuracy on aging wheels, and use it on other grinders as well.Tormek's Horizontal Base lets you mount the rest at the rear of the machine for grinding away from the cutting edge, ideal for carving and turning tools.

Skil 3400-08 15 Amp 10-Inch Table Saw with Stand Review

Skil 3400-08 15 Amp 10-Inch Table Saw with Stand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't even know where to start with how poor of a performer this table saw was. First of all, getting the blade 90 degrees to the table was nearly impossible. It shipped about 5 degrees out. To adjust the 90 degree stop you loosen a screw in the top... well even loosened it seemed to have a memory, requires me to literally FORCE the blade over to as close to 90 degrees I could get it, then hopefully get the lock tighened down before it slipped. Then, trying to change to another angle (on purpose) was very difficult because of the force required to start the motor & blade assembly moving. Once you broke it free it would fly all the way over to the 45 degree angle (or at least you WISH it was 45 degrees) Getting anything inbetween required some kinda luck.
So ok, on to cutting. The unit is so lightweight that trying to rip a 2x6 in half the saw just kept sliding across the floor when I would feed it into the blade. So I set the saw on some plywood to give it more grip, which worked, till it started tipping over on me. Not a very safe scenario here. Once I finally weighed it down so it wouldn't move the cuts were difficult to keep straight because the rip fence would left & right 1/4" on the far end. You have to be very careful not to end up with a tapered or otherwise defective cut.
The miter guage is pretty much useless as there's a lot of play in the slot and no kind of positive stops for 90, 45, or anything else you'd want to cut.
I don't know what else to say, other than the cord wrap was nice and it has blade storage on the side. It was powerful enough to rip wet 2x pressure treated material, if you could get the saw set up to not tip over or slide on you.

Makita RF1101KIT 2-1/4 HP Industrial Router Kit Review

Makita RF1101KIT 2-1/4 HP Industrial Router Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I needed a new router (or two), so I could keep my old router hooked up to a jig all the time. I was looking for a powerful and compact plunge router and a D-handle router in a combination kit with ¼ and ½ inch collets, and variable speed. I could not find any such kits.
In the past, the only corded tools I would purchase were Milwaukee or Porter Cable brands, but the Makita RF1101KIT 2-1/4 HP Industrial Router kit changed that.
Formerly, I used Makita brand for cordless tools exclusively. I have a Makita 9.6v drill that I used professionally, every day for two years and never had a problem. That drill is was purchased in the spring of 1986, and still works fine. It is now part of my collection of many Makita cordless tools, all of which are professional quality tools.
Since Makita offered a 2-¼ Router kit that has enough power to handle most of the bigger bits I use, and Milwaukee and Porter Cable didn't, it was an easy choice, but I still wanted a D-handle router.
Makita's Parts suppliers also offer a RD1101 2-1/4 HP D-Handle Router base that works fine with the RF1101 kit. The base is pricey, but not as bad as purchasing another router. **For safety reasons, it is advisable that you shorten the router power cord, or buy the cord for the rd110. This cord plugs into the D-handle base (Makita D-handle power supply cord AWG#16-3-0.7 - Part Number: 565055-7). This cord costs less than an average 25ft extension cord.
With the d-handle base added to the router kit, I now have three bases and don't have to spend the money for three different routers. The standard router base resides in my router table all the time. The D-handle is used for all fixed base routing, as well as a remote switch for the router table (until I purchase a bump type). The plunge base for plunge type work like mortises, stop dados.
The 1100 and 1101 series routers are very well built. The collets swap out quickly and also make stuck router bit shanks a thing of the past. You do need to use two wrenches that are provided to change bits and collets. I see this as a plus. A spindle lock or shaft lock type bit changing setup (what I had on my old router), puts too much stress on the router's shaft or arbor, which can weaken the shaft.
Other positives:
* This router has it is quiet for a router in it's amperage range.
* The kit comes with an extra clear base plate; I use it as a template to make other base plates.
* The dust collection is as good as it gets for a router. Although the dust collection attachment is clear, it does make it hard to see what happening around the bit. I hook it up to my Fein vacuum that automatically starts up with the tool, and it does pickup a large amount of saw dust, especially with upward spiral bits.
* The base uses standard Porter-Cable style template guides and is compact, but stable.
* An edge guide is also provided
* The soft start feature is a luxury that stops me from flinching and putting a death grip on the handles every time I start up.
* The router is light but solid, with out a lot of plastic.
* The plunge base has a turret style stop that allows plunges to be done incrementally in three steps.
I am so pleased with this router, that I have purchased other Makita corded power tools (LS1010 sliding compound miter saw, and four different sanders), all of which are top quality professional tools.

The Makita 2-1/4 HP Variable Speed Plunge Router Kit features an ultra-quiet motor along with convenient fixed and plunge bases. It also has a variable speed control dial of 8,000 to 24,000 RPM, matching the speed to the materials. DEWALT DW056K-2 18-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless Impact Driver Review

DEWALT DW056K-2 18-Volt Ni-Cad Cordless Impact Driver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We use this driver for running in ½ x 12 lag bolts through pilings. This putts a lot of stress on a driver. The DeWalt has more then enough power to handle this and all lesser tasks. I have used several hammer drivers and hammer drills in my business, this is truly the undisputed "Power King"; however, after running hundreds of lags and screws I encountered a few shortcomings with the DeWalt:\
1.On two of these drivers the anvil (hammer thingy) inside stripped out in less then 3 months. On the plus side, DeWalt replaced them, no questions asked.
2.It a nightmare to get inside and replace the brushes on the work site. Combine that with the reluctance of our rep. to even get the brushes addes up to sending them in for R&R (repair and rebuild) at the cyclic rate. Time = money. I still don't know if the brushes can be replaced, how to do it, or if that is even the problem. I suspect it is due to a small amount of graphite looking dust around the air exhaust vents after long use.
All in all, not bad for hundreds of BIG lags, but to put it into perspective, we also use Makita 24 volt hammer drivers. These have run thousands of big lags with no problems at all! The Makita brushes are a few bucks for a pack and can be replaced in a minute.
My bottom line is: Get the DeWalt for lower production work that needs lots of power, but if you have your driver turning day on stay on, you might want to consider a Makita hammer driver in the 18 - 24 volt range.

DeWalt DW849 Heavy Duty Variable Speed Polisher along with a Kustom Shop Brand Compound, Polish and Finishing Pad Kit with Grip Backing Plate Review

DeWalt DW849 Heavy Duty Variable Speed Polisher along with a Kustom Shop Brand Compound, Polish and Finishing Pad Kit with Grip Backing Plate
Average Reviews:

Purchased this polisher a few months ago. Did plenty of research on the net prior to purchasing it. Most individuals had positive reviews for it so I bought it. I've used this on my 02 Acura and it brought out the shine on my 1991 Toyota Truck.
The truck has been neglected and sat in the driveway for approximately 4 years and then last year I cleaned out the garage and put her in there. The paint had heavy oxidation and zero luster. I hit the paint with the heavy cutting pad, then the medium yellow and the final stage black pad and the paint now shines.
This polisher works great. I would highly recommend it for someone who loves to take care of their vehicles or for someone who does detail work.

DEWALT DW703 Heavy Duty 10-Inch Compound Miter saw Review

DEWALT DW703 Heavy Duty 10-Inch Compound Miter saw
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading all the reviews on miter saws here, I decided on the Dewalt DW 703 10-inch compound miter saw. Originally, I had ordered a DW 706 ten months ago, but a bad wreck the same day of the order meant I had to send it back until I could be sure I could even use any saw, let alone one like the 706. At any rate, I ended up buying the smaller saw because of current health considerations.
The DW 703 is great for my immediate needs. It's lightweight but sturdier than the Hitachi 10-inch saw, something one can carry from worktable to pickup tailgate with the easy-carry handle, simple to use, is accurate, and changing the saw blade relatively uncomplicated, unlike the least expensive 10-inch Delta model I tried. In addition, the blade that comes with it cuts moulding like a knife slicing cold butter....clean and smooth without any splinters. I used tape on the moulding at first to eliminate any splinters, but realized that wasn't necessary, as there were no splinters without it.
The bevel clamp knob on the back is accessible, easy to work, and very stable, adding to the feeling of security when making bevel cuts. Both miter and bevel scales are easy to read and accurate. Although some reviewers have commented that the markings are only painted on and will wear off in time, I plan to take the added step of coating the markings with a clear sealant for added life.
Probably the best feature I've found is the light grip required on the operating handle. I can't see getting carpal tunnel syndrome from overuse of the handle, for it is truly comfortable to use, unlike some of the ones i tried that required both a hard grip on a safety device as well as a tough pull-down on the handle.
It's too bad that Hoover didn't buy out Black and Decker/Dewalt, for then this saw might have had a decently engineered dust spout and bag. For this reason, I am giving the saw only four stars.

Factory-Reconditioned Bosch PB10-CDR-RT Power Box Advanced Job Site Radio with CD Player and Remote Control Review

Factory-Reconditioned Bosch PB10-CDR-RT Power Box Advanced Job Site Radio with CD Player and Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw this device on job-site not too long after it was released. I had to search around to find it, now it's for sale everywhere.
Pros:
-cage allows it to be chained down with ladders and job box.
-cord wrap keeps cable tidy when not in use.
-light weight.
-square shape lets you stack it on a two wheeler (unlike the DW & Mil).
-snap-down CD tray keeps discs from jamming if you tip it or crash into it with a skyjack.
-EQ was designed to be LOUD and fill a room with sound (see cons).
-on-board GFCI cleans up cable clutter.
-12v output and mini-jack input lets me tie in an i-pod or other gear.
-battery charger cabinet holds 8-9 CD jewel cases for safe transport!
CONS:
-EQ was not designed for the audiophile carpenter. If you want booming lows and tight high-end, buy a Bose Wave Radio and hope you don't trash it.
-no line out jack for sending to a transmitter or other device.
-FM reception is garbage, I use CDs and MP3s unless we are listening to AM.
-backlit display is not designed for viewing above horizontal. If you have the box setting on the ground, you must tip it back (or lay on the floor) to read the display. From above you see all possible icons.
-volume control doesn't give you much room for subtle music. I normally keep it on 1 or 2. Volume is electronic with a momentary up-down control via a shuttle knob (on the left)
-GFCI doors flip up, so you have to tip the unit to the side to see the plugs for mating. I just tore the doors off after a while. I figured, why have rain lids? I work indoors well after the job has been dry.
-all of the nooks and crannies on the molded case collect a LOT of dust and debris.
HINT!
The antenna is discretely hidden in the round top handle. I disassembled the unit, cut the antenna lead to the handle and soldered it to a retractable antenna (from my local RadioShack) that I attached easily to the top of the main shell. I do not reccomend this procedure, but I can tell you, it SIGNIFICANTLY increased my FM reception.

This is a wonderful tool. One of my partners suggested we get one and I kept putting it off, now I wonder why I waited so long. We can now plumb 12 foot garage walls using top and bottom plates for extreme accuracy. It also makes basement walls easier to frame. My gables are always plumb and roof overframing is a breeze with a 13 foot straight edge. I think we are the only crew in town using this tool and that definitely gives us an edge over the competition.

JET 649005K 22X44 Plus 22-Inch 1-3/4-Horsepower Drum Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase Review

JET 649005K 22X44 Plus 22-Inch 1-3/4-Horsepower Drum Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase
Average Reviews:

I purchased this drum sander a week ago.
I am rating the Performax 22x44 Plus Drum Sander with Closed Stand.
The stand is completely assembled in the box. This is the first machine that I have assembled and didn't have any extra bolts or washers. Assembly was exactly as it was supposed to be with everything lining up perfectly. All allen wrenches were provided for assembly.
I only had to tighten the brake pedal. The paint job is wonderful.
The motor assembly is extremely heavy, however, I was able to assemble the entire machine in 20 minutes.
I purchased the optional infeed/outfeed tables and think they are great but should cost less than $100, more like $50. No, they should be included, but are not necessary.
Performance: The motor is unbelievable quiet. No vibration at all. It is hard to tell sometimes if the motor is running it is so quiet. I sanded a 14 inch wide board and the results were amazing. Dust collection is a must and my Delta 1200 CFM pulls 99% of the dust.
I use a 30 AMP service for the drum sander.
Drum alignment was spot on. It was only off by .002 of an inch. No adjustment needed at all!
I give it 4 stars because the mobile base moves inline and does not allow you to easily steer the machine. I also wished the conveyor motor was a little beefier. No problems. I just would like the assurance. The motor adjusts from 0 to 10 fpm.
(Update 12-1-06: I received the "handy" tool to assist with sanding belt changes. I COMPLETELY disagree with the instructions for changing the sandpaper on the drum. It is not necessary to use this tool. I and my family think this way is much better: Attach the paper to both sides, but do NOT tighten it on the motor side as instructed. Simply tighten it by hand on the left side where you have much more room and can do it with your fingers. If you own this tool you will see exactly what I am talking about. It is so easy this way.
I am so happy I received this machine. It was given as an early Father's Day gift.
4/09 Update: If I were looking today for a sander, I would take a hard look at Steel City's dual drum sander. You can put two different grits of paper on the machine and really move things along. The price is so close. You also get two four inch dust ports on it. I would buy it now if I didn't already have the Jet/Performax. honestly

Whether you're a hobbyist or serious craftsperson, the JET 649005K 22X44 Plus 22-Inch 1-3/4 HP Drum Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase will provide the smooth, consistent sanding you need to finish projects both big and small. One of the largest sanders available in its class, the 22X44 Plus allows you to sand material up to 44 inches wide with better accuracy than any other sander in its category.
Innovative SandSmart Technology for Automatic Speed RegulationThe 22X44 Plus features Jet's "SandSmart" control that continually monitors the load on the drum motor and automatically regulates the speed of the conveyor motor to maintain the highest feed rate without overload. If the load on the drum motor increases, the SandSmart control will decrease the conveyor feed rate and will stop the conveyor under extreme conditions.
If the load on the drum decreases, SandSmart will increase it faster than the manual setting on the speed adjustment label. This feature works in conjunction with a red indicator light that goes on when the SandSmart control has detected too great a depth of cut and/or too fast a speed rate.
High Capacity for Improved ProductivityThe 22X44 Plus flawlessly sands pieces of stock with a 44-inch width in just two passes, whether you're at the maximum workpiece thickness of four inches or the thinnest, which is 1/32 inch. For added convenience, operation is smooth, quiet, and vibration-free.
"Trackers" and Self-Cooling Drum for Consistent PerformanceJet's patented conveyor belt "trackers" dramatically reduce the need for manual belt adjustments, while the precision-machined, balanced, extruded aluminum drum self-cools to protect the surface being sanded from heat damage.
Sealed Drum Ball Bearings and Reinforced Steel Conveyor Belt for DurabilityBoasting quality construction and materials from top to bottom, the 22X44 Plus is built to last. Sealed and permanently lubricated drum ball bearings ensure longer life, while the precision-flattened, reinforced steel conveyor belt and no-give power feed belt provide a flat, durable sanding surface for better results, job after job.
Cast-Iron Handwheel and Adjustable Drum Height for PrecisionTo ensure precision, the cast-iron handwheel adjusts height at 1/16 inch per turn for sanding thickness control and precise stock removal, and the drum height and downward pressure are both adjustable to virtually eliminate snipe. And to prevent slippage, zinc-plated steel tension rollers mount right next to the drum.
Continuous-Duty Motor for Heavy Use Over Longer PeriodsEquipped with a continuous-duty, 1-3/4 HP motor, the 22X44 Plus is specially designed for heavier use over longer periods of time. This one-feed/one-drive motor model also allows for superior sanding control with a wide range of different wood types.
Operator-Friendly Design Improves ProductivityMade to be operator-friendly, the 22X44 Plus boasts patented abrasive take-up fasteners for quick and easy changes. The on/off switch has overload protection and is front-mounted for accessibility and to help prevent accidental start-ups.
The 22X44 Plus requires minimal assembly, weighs 345 pounds, and is backed by a five-year warranty.

Being in the custom home remodeling business I'm always demonstrating to clients how out of square or plumb their existing structure is. When it comes time to re-working the project I had to wrestle with a plumb bob or spend time squaring up. I've looked at the three other shooting type laser tools and found that the PLS5 is the best value for the money. Even the accessories are well thought out 'cause they help me layout square using their pendulum target and the wall bracket lets me position the laser anywhere on the job. It saves me a ton of time and I do more with my PLS5 than my little rotary laser. I need the accuracy and I like the fact that the beams settle down very fast. Squaring is easy because you shoot 90 degree angles as soon as you turn it on. I tried the RoboVector but could not use it much past 30 feet. Beams got too big and I never knew when it was in self leveling range. Sent it back. PLS5 is more money but I learned a long time ago that you usually get what you pay for. Side by side comparisons rates a thumbs up from me for PLS
