A little trouble with the first shipment but could have been a ups issue. as far as the sander it works great. But expect a lot of set-up time. I probably spent a day on set-up but I'm very precise about my tools. Put casters on this bad boy, it weighs a lot. As far as sanding, it does an excellent job, super smooth after a couple of passes. Mine came with 60 and 100 grit paper on first and second drum, I changed it to 80/120 to get it ready for the random orbit sander for the final surface. Dust collection is not the best. I have it right beside my 1600cfm collector with 2 hoses, it gets the fine airbourne dust but leaves a lot on the wood and conveyor to fall off on the floor. The main thing this beast could use is some way of determining the set-up height. You have to push your wood in with the machine off and adjust by feel. It has plenty of power, never had it even grunt the least. The sandpaper attachment doesn't keep the paper tight enough for me so I spray the back of the sandpaper with contact adhesive just before rolling it on and then tape the ends with packing tape. I still have 24" of sanding because the rollers are about 25" to 25 1/2" long. I've had the machine for about six months and had no trouble. I find myself running everything through it from boards to gluded panels-(which I bought it for). Leaves edges square too. If your like me and can't justify a wide belt sander, I would recommend this powerful sander, and buy it again.

Very well built machine with heavy steel stand. Much better than the comparable models on the market today. Easy to set up and adjust. The only reason I gave it four stars is it comes with a poor assembly manual, but assembly is so straightforward this is not a big problem. I have only had the machine a short time but sanding results so far have been good. Exceptionally fast stock removal. Highly recommended for the pro shop or the part time woodworker.

I purchased this to sand the areas of my hardwood floors that the rented floor sander could not reach (closets and edges) and man is this thing a beast! As soon as you squeeze the trigger, you can feel the power. I'm sure if Tim Allen tried it, you'd hear a loud grunt of approval. Easy to change belts and adjust tracking, which stays adjusted allowing you to do what you need to do, sand. Highly recommended.

I've revised this review as of 1/8/04
My sander arrived with the motor fan cover pushed in and rubbing against the fan. This was easy to remedy with a screwdriver. I'm glad I rotated the motor by hand before plugging it in. The outer cover to the grarbox was also dented. My local dealer immediately offered to repair or replace the sander with a new one. There were also several bolts and even a piece of bearing race found at the bottom of the shipping crate. I opted to keep the one I had because because the tables and fences were ground flat and true and "initial" alignment (see comments further on)was very good. The quailty and consistancy of the grind and polish was excellent.
This is a big and bulky machine and it takes four people to lift it onto its mobile base. I used a Jet adjustable base rated for 1200 pounds. I had to cut a few inches off two of the adjusting bars to compensate for the width of the sander.
Assembly was easy and so was belt adjustment. I walked the belt through several rotations by hand to check tracking. All seemed OK. When I turned the sander on it quiclky destroyed the belt. Visual inspection showed the the three bolts I had found at the bottom of the crate were missing from the underside of the sander where they mount the idler drum to the machine. I should have looked it over more carefully. Once installed and readjusted with a new belt installed, the tracking worked perfectly. My dealer sent out his service technician with the replacement parts and a new belt. He assured me that the bearing race and a couple of other metal scraps are not from my sander. My dealer also assures me that as long as they are in business, I will never have to worry about the warranty expiring.
I was initially impressed with the way things line up. As long as the belt is not under tension, the auxilliary table is 90 degrees to the idler drum even when raised all the way up to the auxilliary sanding drums. Under belt tension, the table is off by a few degrees. There is no provision to compensate for this. I'll have to rough sand curved surfaces on this machine and do the final sanding on my Grizzly oscillating drum sander. Why would I not want to start out on the Grizzly? There is a certain economy to using the belt as opposed to an expensive sanding sleeve.

There is no oscillating action with these drums. All oscillation is done with the sanding belt only. The auxiliary sanding table which is made from heavy formed steel is at a true 90 degrees to the main table.
The only other alignment problems that I see come from two areas. First of all, when you release the table locks to slide it in and out to the sanding belt, it is possible to push to table out of alignment. This would not be a problem for normal edge sanding operations but would pose a hassle when using the miter guage. A remedy is to take two small thin right angle metal brackets and loosly wedge them in place between the table and the belt as you move the table forward. Then set your table locks and you have repeatable accuracy. Don't forget to slide the metal brackets out befor turning on the sander!
The other problem comes with the built in detent locking mechanism for 0, 45, and 90 degrees. Dissassembly revealed a burr on the end of the pin itself which prevented it from smoothly disengaging. It also revealed that the tip of the spring which thrusts the pin forward was lying in the cutaway wherein the pin retracts. I unscrewed the retaining cap on the pin mechanism and rotated the spring so that a flat edge now rested against the pin. This keeps the tip of the spring from jamming in the pin's raceway. It took some carefuI adjustment to get to detent mechanism to deliver a repeatable 90 degrees. It was worth the effort as it now quickly comes into square.
You can forget about trying to view the indexing scale with the supplied pointer. For my pointer to be anywhere near where it is supposed to be it has to go all the way back against the indexing pin mechanism. Even then, It is impossible to view the scale head on as the motor lies directly in your line of sight. I'm going to epoxy a small mirror to a block of wood with a triangular cross section then epoxy that to the motor mounting plate. That will allow me to view the scale head on even though I'm viewing it at right angles from the front of the sander. It would have been very easy for Delta to do this or for them to have used a prism mounted in a similar way.
This machine deliveres excellent results when sanding straight edges and that is what it is all about. I like the way the drum covers latch back out of the way so you can sand boards longer than the table. If I didn't have the Grizzly oscillating spindle sander and if the Powermatic had a longer belt and allowed you to latch back its guards, I'd have bought the Powermatic.

I purchased this drum sander a week ago.
I am rating the Performax 22x44 Plus Drum Sander with Closed Stand.
The stand is completely assembled in the box. This is the first machine that I have assembled and didn't have any extra bolts or washers. Assembly was exactly as it was supposed to be with everything lining up perfectly. All allen wrenches were provided for assembly.
I only had to tighten the brake pedal. The paint job is wonderful.
The motor assembly is extremely heavy, however, I was able to assemble the entire machine in 20 minutes.
I purchased the optional infeed/outfeed tables and think they are great but should cost less than $100, more like $50. No, they should be included, but are not necessary.
Performance: The motor is unbelievable quiet. No vibration at all. It is hard to tell sometimes if the motor is running it is so quiet. I sanded a 14 inch wide board and the results were amazing. Dust collection is a must and my Delta 1200 CFM pulls 99% of the dust.
I use a 30 AMP service for the drum sander.
Drum alignment was spot on. It was only off by .002 of an inch. No adjustment needed at all!
I give it 4 stars because the mobile base moves inline and does not allow you to easily steer the machine. I also wished the conveyor motor was a little beefier. No problems. I just would like the assurance. The motor adjusts from 0 to 10 fpm.
(Update 12-1-06: I received the "handy" tool to assist with sanding belt changes. I COMPLETELY disagree with the instructions for changing the sandpaper on the drum. It is not necessary to use this tool. I and my family think this way is much better: Attach the paper to both sides, but do NOT tighten it on the motor side as instructed. Simply tighten it by hand on the left side where you have much more room and can do it with your fingers. If you own this tool you will see exactly what I am talking about. It is so easy this way.
I am so happy I received this machine. It was given as an early Father's Day gift.
4/09 Update: If I were looking today for a sander, I would take a hard look at Steel City's dual drum sander. You can put two different grits of paper on the machine and really move things along. The price is so close. You also get two four inch dust ports on it. I would buy it now if I didn't already have the Jet/Performax. honestly

Whether you're a hobbyist or serious craftsperson, the JET 649005K 22X44 Plus 22-Inch 1-3/4 HP Drum Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase will provide the smooth, consistent sanding you need to finish projects both big and small. One of the largest sanders available in its class, the 22X44 Plus allows you to sand material up to 44 inches wide with better accuracy than any other sander in its category.
Innovative SandSmart Technology for Automatic Speed RegulationThe 22X44 Plus features Jet's "SandSmart" control that continually monitors the load on the drum motor and automatically regulates the speed of the conveyor motor to maintain the highest feed rate without overload. If the load on the drum motor increases, the SandSmart control will decrease the conveyor feed rate and will stop the conveyor under extreme conditions.
If the load on the drum decreases, SandSmart will increase it faster than the manual setting on the speed adjustment label. This feature works in conjunction with a red indicator light that goes on when the SandSmart control has detected too great a depth of cut and/or too fast a speed rate.
High Capacity for Improved ProductivityThe 22X44 Plus flawlessly sands pieces of stock with a 44-inch width in just two passes, whether you're at the maximum workpiece thickness of four inches or the thinnest, which is 1/32 inch. For added convenience, operation is smooth, quiet, and vibration-free.
"Trackers" and Self-Cooling Drum for Consistent PerformanceJet's patented conveyor belt "trackers" dramatically reduce the need for manual belt adjustments, while the precision-machined, balanced, extruded aluminum drum self-cools to protect the surface being sanded from heat damage.
Sealed Drum Ball Bearings and Reinforced Steel Conveyor Belt for DurabilityBoasting quality construction and materials from top to bottom, the 22X44 Plus is built to last. Sealed and permanently lubricated drum ball bearings ensure longer life, while the precision-flattened, reinforced steel conveyor belt and no-give power feed belt provide a flat, durable sanding surface for better results, job after job.
Cast-Iron Handwheel and Adjustable Drum Height for PrecisionTo ensure precision, the cast-iron handwheel adjusts height at 1/16 inch per turn for sanding thickness control and precise stock removal, and the drum height and downward pressure are both adjustable to virtually eliminate snipe. And to prevent slippage, zinc-plated steel tension rollers mount right next to the drum.
Continuous-Duty Motor for Heavy Use Over Longer PeriodsEquipped with a continuous-duty, 1-3/4 HP motor, the 22X44 Plus is specially designed for heavier use over longer periods of time. This one-feed/one-drive motor model also allows for superior sanding control with a wide range of different wood types.
Operator-Friendly Design Improves ProductivityMade to be operator-friendly, the 22X44 Plus boasts patented abrasive take-up fasteners for quick and easy changes. The on/off switch has overload protection and is front-mounted for accessibility and to help prevent accidental start-ups.
The 22X44 Plus requires minimal assembly, weighs 345 pounds, and is backed by a five-year warranty.

A two foot square smooth cast iron table top combined with a very smooth spindle makes this machine very easy to work with. I measured the spindle runout to be 0.004 inches maximum for all spindles, except for the 1/4 spindle that was 0.013.

My lower rating of only 3 stars is due to 3 quality issues. The top came with chemical stains, but was smooth and usable. I had to re-wire the switch... minor but should not have been required. And third, the table inserts are not flush with the table top. This can cause a piece of wood to catch as you are sanding with a resulting cup or glitch. Jet is sending me a new set of table inserts, but I have a feeling it is a poorly machined table top. I could easily shim the inserts, but for the price of the machine I expect it to be right and I want JET to know their quality control is slipping.

I rec'd the sander a few days ago. It went together easy. It was quite heavy. Unless you've got some muscles, get some help placing the sander body on the stand.
The stand is solid and doesn't take up much floor space. There are pre-drilled carriage-bolt holes in the legs if you want to add your own lower shelf. I plan to do that at a later date but I thought it would be nice if Jet included the horizontal supports for such a shelf with the stand. Not a big negative just a suggestion. The stand comes with rubber-cushioned leveling feet unlike some of the other stands I've purchased in the past. It was a nice touch.
Other than the stand, essentially the only assembly needed is to attach the work tables to the sander body. The instructions are pretty good and they show in some detail how you get the tables lined up square to the sanding surfaces. I had a little trouble getting the belt sander work surface to go on smoothly but after making some adjustments to the 90 degree stops, it seemed to go on more easily.
The unit runs smoothly and with about as much noise as I would expect with a sander, although the graphite belt sander platen seems to make a little more "whooshing" sound when it starts up. The graphite is supposed to make it run cooler. I haven't confirmed that but it makes sense. There aren't any undue vibrations. Not having owned a stationary belt sander before this one (but I have used several) releasing the belt tension was new for me but makes sense. It's recommended so the belt doesn't take on an excessively oval shape or wear out prematurely. It's easy to do but I find that I have to line up the belt on the rollers before I move the tension arm back. Easy to do, just something to remember if you plan to release the tension when the machine is off.
The belt sander will lay flat if you need to do some surface sanding. There's a horizontal stop but no vertical stop. However, eyeball vertical is fine since the work surface moves with the belt assembly and as such stays perpendicular.
The disc sander is great for me. 9 inche diameter is all I need. I've considered 12 inch disc sanders but this machine gets the job done. I build furniture, cabinets and various (larger) craft items and I expect that it will handle my needs.
Adjusting the work surfaces requires some patience but wasn't too difficult. For example, if you want to change the angle on the belt sander work surface, you need to loosen two locking handles and line up the angle that you need while maintaining a gap between the table and the sanding belt. I find that when I tightened the right-side locking handle, it pulls the table toward the belt. I don't use the belt sander at other that 90 degrees too often, so I don't expect this to be a big deal for me. The disc sander work surface on the other hand is a breeze to adjust. There's an angle indicator on the table, so once the index is set to zero for perpendicular, moving to any other angle is a snap....
The 3/4 hp motor has yet to bog down on me. It seems adequately beefy so far.
I think this is a great sander. I've considered spending some money on Jet's larger sander and others in that class and was also considering other brands with lower priced units ... but when Jet re-released this machine, it didn't take long for me to make up my mind. As I use the sander more, I'll add more comments, but I expect to be very happy with my purchase and expect most other woodworkers would be happy as well.
Nice job to Jet on this one. I give it 5 stars for quality and value.
====
Update in 2010 (8 years later):
Just a follow up. The sander is still working great. I do use it fairly often (belt side mostly) so it seems to have held up well. Have not had any wear issues on the table adjustments. I have yet to change the sanding disc but belt changes are easy. I never got around to adding a shelf under the unit. And related to that, the legs are more than stable enough without any lower braces. So I'm pretty happy. I expect to get many more years from the sander.

Complete with built-in handles for easy portability, the JET 708596K JSG-96OS 6-Inch/9-Inch 3/4 HP Open Stand Belt/Disc Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase is a combination belt/disc sander that comes complete with 3/4 HP motor for plenty of power to both sanders, a heavy-duty open-style stand, and two work tables. This versatile tool makes sanding tasks easier, more accurate, and less time-intensive for higher-quality results.
The belt can be positioned flat or fully vertical for improved versatility.Powerful Mounted Motor for Robust, Stable PerformanceThe JSG-96OS is powered by a robust 3/4 HP, 110-volt, TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor mounted in a heavy-duty base. The base also supports the nine-inch diameter disc and belt systems (measuring 6 by 48 inches) to create a solid and very stable unit.
Dual Thumbscrew Adjustment for PrecisionThe JSG-96OS boasts Jet's exclusive dual thumbscrew belt tracking adjustment locks--an innovative feature that keeps the belt on track during use, which helps ensure precise results.
Sealed Ball Bearings and Steel Platen for Exceptional DurabilityBuilt to last, the JSG-96OS offers exceptional durability for long-term reliability. Sealed, permanently lubricated ball bearings at all major friction points reduce maintenance and help provide an extended, trouble-free life, while the graphite-covered steel platen runs cooler, thereby preventing heat damage.
Single Dust Port Collects From Both Belt and DiscTo help keep your workspace clean, healthy, and dust-free, this tool features an effective dust collection system. This system has a single four-inch dust port on the back of the base that evacuates debris from both the disc and belt through specially designed shrouds that maximize its effectiveness.
Clever and Efficient Disc Section DesignThe nine-inch diameter disc spins at 1,725 RPM (no load) and accepts adhesive-backed discs. Additionally, the heavy-duty disc plate is machined flat for super-smooth sanding and resists warping or deflection under all normal sanding conditions. To enhance dust collection and safety, a hinged door covers the lower portion of the sanding disc. Opening the door provides easy access to the complete disc for replacement of the abrasive.
Belt Section Offers Maximum VersatilityMeasuring 6 x 48 inches, the sanding belt runs at 2,258 SFPM (surface feet per minute) and offers plenty of surface area to handle the big jobs. Its overall size also allows you to distribute wear over a larger area, which substantially increases the life of the abrasive.
For added convenience, the belt runs on high-quality rollers, mounted in a fully adjustable arm for maximum versatility. A rubber-coated drive drum helps to maintain belt speed.
Cast-Iron Sanding Disc Table for Stability and FlexibilityThe cast-iron sanding disc table measures 10 inches wide and 12 inches in length, and has lots of surface area to help support large work pieces. The table also features a unique curved shape that makes it easy to use in a wide range of sanding operations. It's also fully adjustable and tilts up to 45 degrees. For added convenience, a handy scale under the table shows the current amount of tilt and makes setting specific angles fast and easy.
Disc Table Mount for Increased VersatilityTo make the belt even more versatile, a mount for the disc table can be used at the belt as well (the belt table must be removed). This is particularly useful when using the center point device or sanding an odd-shaped work piece.
Miter Gauge and Pivoting Fence for User-Friendly OperationThe JSG-96OS comes with a full-featured miter gauge, and a fence measuring 5.5 x 2 inches tall to securely hold stock or attach shop-made jigs. This fence also pivots 60 degrees to the right or left and is locked with the twist of the push handle. Finally, the miter gauge has a steel guide bar fitted with a T-slot follower that prevents lifting or rocking during sanding.
The JSG-96OS is backed by a five-year warranty.

*Skip to bottom of review for update*
I've had a Delta BOSS spindle sander for ~5 years and it worked well until the motor burned out. Repairing it would cost almost as much as a new one, and even if repaired its longevity was questionable (other than that I've been pleased with its performance), so I looked for a replacement and settled on the Jet. I've used the Jet and it does the job intended. However, it has some areas in which it could be easily improved. Following are some comparisons between the Jet and the Delta.
1) The Jet is slightly quieter than the Delta, but not a lot - neither is a loud tool.
2) The Delta's round table is larger than the Jet's square one. The Jet's table is beefier (the Delta's never showed any tendency to flex).
3) The Delta's base is plastic, while the Jet is all metal. The feet for the Delta are molded into its base, with non-skid rubber inserts attached - all four of the molded feet are cracked, though this never caused a problem. The Jet has non-slip feet as well, and given the construction I don't think they'll be cracking or breaking off.
4) The Delta's mechanism is simple and looked robust enough. I've read that people have had problems with the nylon drive gear - I did not. However, the cover for the gears broke off at some point.
5) The Delta's steel table inserts fit around the spindles well (one for each spindle), with a pattern cut into them to improve dust collection. Delta has modified the BOSS since, and I don't know if its inserts are still steel. There are fewer inserts (also steel) for the Jet (one size is used for multiple spindles). The table inserts in the Jet aren't flush with the cast iron table top, necessitating shimming them.
6) The Delta has storage for all its accessories. The Jet has storage for some of its accessories. There's storage for the spindles and inserts, but no provision for storing the supplied wrenches required for changing the spindles. Also, there's no storage for the optional 3" spindle and insert. The Jet's insert holder slots are too narrow for the inserts to slip into (they can be forced). Some filing of the holder would correct this for the most part, but the mounting bolts will restrict the depth to which the insert can fit in the innermost slot. Some of the holes in the spindle holder are too small for the spindle to seat into completely.
7) The Delta comes with the full range of spindles (up the 3"). The Jet comes with smaller sizes (down to 1/4"), but the 3" spindle is a costly add-on (and its insert is extra).
8) The Delta is almost too tall while sitting on the benchtop (I'm 5' 9"). The Jet is ~3" taller, so it's too tall for benchtop use for me. I built it a rolling stand that puts it at a more comfortable height. This also solved the problem of lifting the Jet onto the bench - it weighs considerably more than the Delta.
9) The Jet's spindles are ~1" longer than the Delta's, but given the Jet's tilting table feature, in normal (right angle) use the extra length is lost, and the capacities of these sanders are similar.
10) The Delta's dust collection is efficient (when hooked up to a shop vacuum or dust collector - the bag is useless). The Jet is much more open underneath (between the table and the base, to accommodate the tilt feature), so dust collection suffers. I've experimented with some thin plastic sheeting to enclose this volume better). Both tools have odd-sized dust ports.
11) The Jet has twice the horsepower of the Delta (1/2 versus 1/4), but I never bogged down the Delta (these are fairly aggressive sanders, so light pressure is the norm). The Delta's motor is an open design (i.e., dust can get in) with no built-in fan, whereas the Jet has a TEFC motor.
12) The Jet costs ~$150 more than the Delta.
Bottom line: The Jet is a more solidly built machine, and appears to be constructed for the long haul. It has some rough edges that, if corrected, would take it from "very good" to "excellent". Given the extra $150 cost compared to the Delta, Jet should make these corrections. Even as is I'd classify it as a "keeper". The Delta is a decent machine for the money, but my experience with the motor kept me from buying another like it. I own a number of Delta tools (stationary and benchtop), many 15 years old or more, and this is the first failure I've experienced with one.
*Update 4/2007*
I've used the Jet sander for 2 years and I'm still pleased with it - no mechanical problems whatsoever.
The thin plastic sheeting mentioned above works fine for improving the dust collection so I have continued to use it.
I considered trying to adapt the spindles and sleeves from the Delta to the Jet, primarily so I could use the Delta's 3" spindle. The Delta would fit on one of the Jet's smaller diameter solid metal spindles (the sleeve length difference has to be addressed). However, I couldn't get the sleeve off the Jet's spindle. I didn't want to cut it off, so I gave up and bought the 3" spindle and insert. The 3" size is just too useful to pass up. It's also overpriced and should be standard equipment. Oh well.
With the 3" spindle and insert the storage problem became a real headache, so I removed the two shelves that came with the Jet and built two larger ones out of oak and mounted them where the metal shelves had been. The new shelves are the same length, but are slightly wider (they don't protrude any further out than the table top). As with the metal shelves, one side holds the spindles and the other the inserts. On the insert side I also made provision to hold the two wrenches. Metal angle brackets, bent to match the shape of the sander body, hold the new shelves in place. This is a vast improvement to the stock shelves.

Porter-Cable 363 12 Amp 4-Inch by 24-Inch Belt Sander Review

Porter-Cable 363 12 Amp 4-Inch by 24-Inch Belt Sander
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had bought the Porter Cable 4" Whisper Series Model 362 about a year ago. It is the same unit as this one, same 12 amp motor etc, but has the dust bag with it, and is variable speed. You can see the 362VS here at Amazon. For the price difference I would buy the 362VS. I had written this review, thinking that this was the model that I had, after looking at the model number on the sander, I realized it was a 362. Consequently I wrote this review first, then copy and pasted the review into the 362VS. So if you see the same review, you know why. For the sake of interest, I am letting this review stand. Here it is:
I previously used a 3x21" Sears. Did the job, but this PC is in a whole different category. Some of the more important features: Positive tracking-when you set the belt adjusting knob, the belt stays adjusted. Some belt sanders creep on you, and require frequent resetting. Annoying to say the least. Also the belt change feature is nice. A simple lever you pull out, then push back in. Quiet-you do not have to wear ear protection to use this. Hearing protection is always a good idea though. It is heavy, but to me this is an advantage. You don't have to push down on the unit, in order to get the job done. To those who mention that you have to keep an eye on the machine, because it can take away too much material too fast, that is because they are using a coarser grit than it required for the task. Finer grades give you more flexibility, and removal is more gradual and even. A belt sander is not designed to replace a finish sander.
With the larger 4" footprint, it is possible to remove a lot of material fast, without digging troughs in the work, which is possible with many belt sanders. Troughs-ridges show in the finished product. For fine finishes that are even and flat, a dedicated planer, then a finish sander, and finally a fine grade of hand sanding will give you the desired result.
The Porter Cable 4" is the best belt sander I have ever used. I would not hesitate to take on a floor refinishing task with this unit. If I was doing it for a living, I would of course persue a walk behind.
This is a no nonsense sander. Heavy duty. Lay it on the board, and hold on. Makes short of a lot of work. Feels like it will last a lifetime. Definitely a leader in the pack, and worth the money.

The Porter-Cable 363 belt Sander features a huge 4 x 24 inch belt, a powerful 12 Amp motor, and an efficient belt-and-gear drive system for accurate power transfer. Remove stock quickly with the 1,500 SFPM belt speed, but don't worry about this sander being too powerful to control--the 360's motor is located over platen to give this sander perfect balance and keep you in control, and the ergonomically-designed handles are comfortable enough for hours of sanding. When it's time to change the belt, the quick-release belt system makes it a cinch, and the fingertip belt-tracking knob gives the user a quick and easy way to adjust the belt tension.

DELTA 31-300 6-Inch/12-Inch 1-1/2 Horsepower Open Stand Belt/Disc Sander, 120/240-Volt 1 Phase Review

DELTA 31-300 6-Inch/12-Inch 1-1/2 Horsepower Open Stand Belt/Disc Sander, 120/240-Volt 1 Phase

I purchased this sander about two months ago from Tool Crib to replace a Sears's stationary sander that is 20 years old. Compared to my old sander this is one heck of a machine. Very heavy and solid. Much more powerful than the Sears sander it replaced.
Pros:
Price: The least expensive sander in its category.
Heavy Duty! This is a beefy machine compared to the Craftsman. Appears to be a quality, industrial grade tool. Be sure to run a dedicated 30A circuit for this sander. I ran a new 30A, 120-volt circuit, but ran my shop vac and sander on the same circuit and tripped the breaker several times in less than 10 minutes.
Powerful! You cannot stop the sanding belt no matter how much pressure you put on your work piece. Aggressive sanding with the belt that shipped with the sander.
The 12" disk sander works very well. The tables seem flat and generously large compared to my old machine. The stand, even though having 4 legs instead of a cabinet is sturdy and stable.
Cons:
Not too much of a problem, but worth mentioning: the sanding surface is several inches shorter than the Sears sander (same belt size 6 x 48 inches) because the front roller on the Delta has a much larger diameter than my old Sears model.
There is a small tag riveted to the top of the unit, just proud of, and parallel to the sanding belt on the right side. As you move your work piece side to side while sanding, the tag won't let you move a wide board off the right side of the belt. Again, not too big a problem, just grind off the rivets attaching the metal tag and remove it. Delta should re-evaluate placing the tag there in the first place.
The tracking of the belt that shipped with my sander does move from side to side while in use, and I can't seem to stop the movement by adjusting the tracking. It's possible the sanding belt is defective, I'm going to try a new sanding belt to see if that helps. Even though the sanding belt tracks side to side, it does not come off, and I am able to use the machine. If this is normal tracking for this machine I'll be disappointed, I'd think the belt should track pretty much perfectly straight. But, like I said, it's still too early to say for sure.
The Dust collection port is sized for a 4-inch dust collection hose. I use a Porter Cable shop vacuum with a 2 1/2-inch hose. Delta does not offer an adapter that allows easy use of a 2 1/2-inch hose. At Delta Customer Support I was advised to have an adapter fabricated at a sheet metal shop. That is a dumb remedy on the part of Delta. However, the dust collection hood that was a part of my Dewalt 734 thickness planer came with a plastic adapter that works perfect. It slips over and attaches to the Delta 4" dust port, and a standard 2 1/2" vac hose slips inside the adapter. No hose clamps are needed. The adapters are available from the Dewalt web site, listed as a replacement part for the DW734 for $3 each. Delta should get smart and ship their product with a similar adapter.
Conclusion: Again, I have not used this machine long enough to know everything about it, nor have I used any other sander in this catagory other than my old Sears model to compare it to. I do have a few other quality machines for comparison, old Delta Unisaw, Powermatic 8" jointer, etc., and I think the Delta sander is close to being in that class. Over all, I like the sander, and would purchase it again if I had it to do over.

Porter-Cable 121 6 Amp Hand Held Oscillating Spindle Sander Review

Porter-Cable 121 6 Amp Hand Held Oscillating Spindle Sander
Average Reviews:

It's amazing that no one else thought of the portable spindle sander idea before this. I find myself turning to this tool more and more. I've used it to clean and straighten plywood edges using the included straight edge - it does a terrific job. I've also used it to trim fit an already hung Mahogany door. Yes, I could have used a planer, but this tool made easy work of sanding down the high spots. I'll be doing some curved work soon and I'm not dreading the post jigsaw cleanup - this will make easy work of that as well. I'm giving this four stars because the spindle set was not included with my purchase - this should be made part of the package.

Bosch 1250DEVS 6-1/2-Amp 6-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Vacuum Port Review

Bosch 1250DEVS 6-1/2-Amp 6-Inch Random Orbit Sander with Vacuum Port

Great Product!
I don't know what product "Jonman x484" is talking about, but it can't be the Orbit Sander. I have been involved in woodworking for over 20 years and own a variety of Bosch tools. My latest purchase was the Orbit Sander to cut down on "sanding" time, and the product lives up to expectations. The two speeds allows you to "rough" sand and "finish" sand without changing tools. It is also very comfortable to use, almost like it was made for my hands. Also, once again, Bosch included a place for the wrench in the design of this tool. I love that feature! No more looking around for the right wrench to change out pads. The only negative is I feel that they should include a vacuum attachment as a bonus.

The 1250DEVS multiple-purpose sander from Bosch has two sanding modes: random orbit mode for normal stock removal or fine finishing, and an aggressive -InchTurbo-Inch drive eccentric orbit mode that operates at five times the regular rate, in order to remove rougher stock. Its simple sanding mode selector switch quickly changes back and forth between the two modes, as your projects require it -- and the powerful 6.5 amp variable speed motor (3,100 to 6,650 opm) matches the tool's speed to the task, for a smooth result on all surfaces. This model is crammed with great convenience and power features, including a soft start function that tones down the start-up torque and a variable speed dial that makes it extra easy to match your working speed to the project. It also has Constant Response circuitry that maintains the pad speed under heavy loads while simultaneously protecting against overloads, and an integral pad dampening system to help prevent swirl marks -- plus a passive dust collection system (vacuum and hoses required, available by Bosch). The 1250DEVS uses 6-hole, 6-inch hook-and-loop discs. This kit includes a dust tube, soft backing pad, a left or right-hand auxiliary handle, one sanding disc, and a pad wrench (5mm) that stores on-board.
