Samsung DMT300RFB 24 Built-In Dishwasher - Black Review

We bought this from Sears in 08/10. After using it for a couple weeks we found you need to run it on heavy/sanitize after you pre-rinse everything to have any chance of getting clean dishes. A month ago it broke and the parts are still on order with no estimated arrival date (the Sears people keep saying they are in transit). Hopefully, the second breakdown will be in the warranty period as well.

Takagi T-K Jr-LP Liquid Propane Flash Liquid Propane Compact Tan Review

Takagi T-K Jr-LP Liquid Propane Flash Liquid Propane Compact Tan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a general contractor and have used an on-demand tankless water heater in my 3200 square foot home since I built it in 1984, when few people in the US had tankless water heaters. That first LP heater served my family well, but it required a pilot light that was always on and it used a rubber diaphragm to turn the heater on. The diaphragm had to be replaced every three or four years. That heater was made in the UK and getting repair parts and someone who could do the repairs was problematic. About three years ago, I replaced it with a Takagi T-K Jr-LP Liquid Propane Flash Liquid Propane Compact Tan. It uses a different sensing method and it ignites using an electronic starter. Installation was fairly simple for me, so I did the ventilation, plumbing, and electrical work myself. The only complication was the addition of a 115 VAC outlet to the heater closet because the Takagi T-K Jr LP requires an electrical hookup to power its computerized controller. The heater also must be properly vented to outside air, so, to meet building code where I live, I also had to buy and install a stainless steel vent through the roof. The venting materials can cost almost as much as the heater depending on where the heater is installed. NOTE: More than likely, you should hire a licensed contractor to do the installation to ensure that the job is done correctly (according to code requirements where it is to be used) and for safety. The Takagi T-K Jr was definitely a very good buy and I have confidently recommended it to my friends and will continue to do so.

Fisher & Paykel : DD24DCX6 Semi-Integrated Double DishDrawer - Stainless Steel with LCD Display Review

Fisher and Paykel : DD24DCX6 Semi-Integrated Double DishDrawer - Stainless Steel with LCD Display
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been in the upscale appliance retail and wholesale business over 20 years. I was there when Fisher & Paykel first came to the US with their top load washer; such a well designed machine that is is still available (albeit with some cosmetic upgrades) at an affordable price. I owned one of their washers for eight years and only ever had one problem with it which was self imposed - I put 2 bath mats in the washer and the machine freaked out and shut down in the spin cycle. I called F&P and we were able to fix the machine by phone.
When the dishdrawer hit our shores some 12-14 years ago, it was a mess. There was almost a 50% failure rate on the machines. You would think that this would have sunk the concept and the brand in the US, but I believe the consumer did respond positively and Fisher & Paykel soldiered on, improving the product, reducing failures and gaining market share. As each new version hit the market, the product steadily improved and so did our sales. I believe the last generation (version 7) was glitch free.

Recently, I did a major remodel of my house and decided to install a double dishdrawer. I must say that is does a great job washing the dishes (I don't rinse), it's quiet ( I have a large open floor plan w/vaulted ceilings and tile floor and I can't hear it running).
So, like many companies whose product is viable, F&P finally got it right. The blogosphere is ubiquitous and everlasting, so this gets a bad rap. But kudos to F&P for sticking with it and getting it right. I believe many of the negatives out there are installation related and F&P takes the blame. So be it. But, this is a marvel of a product whose time has come; I am very happy and confidently promote this dishwasher to my customers.
The newest version is the best yet; they increased the overall height of the top drawer so it fits a 13" tall item and improved the racks. It just keeps getting better and better.......
I felt it was necessary to comment from a different angle; I both sell and own this product. I hear all of our customer's and my wife's feedback; I say this product has hit it's stride.

Frigidaire Gallery Series : FGHD2433KF Fully Integrated Dishwasher - Stainless Steel

This is the worst consumer product I have ever bought. Worse than any bad dell laptop or any other appliance. The sad thing is, that it does a great job washing dishes and is pretty quiet while doing it. Frigidaire seems to think that their solution to a ventless design is to let steam escape during drying from out the sides and top of the door. Within 6 months, my cabinets and doors were ruined by the constant steam. The finish peeled and cracked. was covered under warranty by maker of cabinets but clearly wasn't their fault. Then a few months later, the thing started blinking and would only sporadically respond to button presses and would only do random things not necessarily what I pressed. Service came out and replaced buttons and circuit board (under warranty). That circuit board started to cause my dishwasher to randomly make crazy noises at random times of day regardless of whether or not the dishwasher was actually run that day. Came out again and said they could not duplicate the problem, I asked them to stay until it did it again, and of course it started doing it again at 2am so they had left. Well, now I can get a new circuit board because it died again. lights blinking, then nothing. oh wait, nothing but then 5 minutes later burning smell and smoke. unplugged unit, thankfully I was home and prevented a bigger fire or explosion. Now it is past warranty and repair is $200 for the same crappy circuit board. if you ever get a chance to look at the circuit board, it resembles the technology of your old atari 2600 but actually costs more, does less and is extremely prone to failure. Over the years, frigidaire has made small changes to the design from an aesthetic point, but not from a functional point, the newer 2010 model still has the same lousy design. do a search on frigidaire circuit board failiure or frigidaire fire or frigidaire cabinet steam and see the many complaints. some have even gone so far as to make their own site dedicated to the problems with dishwasher. i am hoping to get a few more months out of this piece of garbage and find something else on sale. a complete waste of hundreds of dollars. so 1 year, 2 replaced circuit boards, should have been 3, replaced cabinet doors and have had a total of 3 weeks of no dishwasher.

Whirlpool : GU2475XTVY 24in Fully Integrated Dishwasher with 6 Automatic Cycles Review

Whirlpool : GU2475XTVY 24in Fully Integrated Dishwasher with 6 Automatic Cycles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As usual, I spent a whole lot of time looking for a replacement dishwasher. Looked at a lot of models, and narrowed the choices down to models from Whirlpool, Bosch and KitchenAid.
The high end Bosch and Kitchenaid models were great - read nothing but good things (for the most part) about their performance, and they are very, very quiet. But, cost was a factor, and I just couldn't see paying more than one grand for a dishwasher (and some are a LOT more than a grand!).
Looked into Whirlpool since they get excellent reliability ratings from the "consumer" magazine. This model caught my eye since it offered a fully-integrated panel (i.e., the controls are hidden) and some nice convenience features. So far, it has been a top-notch performer.
The potscrubber feature works very well, and is identical to the one on the Kitchenaid (not unexpected, since Whirlpool owns Kitchenaid). Love the movable cutlery basket! You can hang it on the door for more room, or put it on the front or side of the lower tray. If loaded properly, silverware comes out clean no matter where you put the basket. If, however, you tend to just toss in forks and spoons and not arrange them, you'll want to put the basket on the lower rack so it gets more direct spray time.
The interior is light gray with a tile-type pattern. It's plastic, so it's not as fancy looking as stainless. But, I care more about what the dishwasher looks like from the outside, and the stainless steel outside looks great. It also has a unique feature among hidden control models in that the steam vent is on the front of the machine, and not the top. That's important to keep the steam from hitting the bottom of your counters. Can't figure out why everyone else doesn't do it that way.
Many different cycles to choose from including regular, adaptive (which uses sensors to figure out what to do), high temp and sanitary rinse. Lots of nice little touches, such as foldable tines and clips to hold light plastic items so they don't flip over during the wash cycle.
Noise levels are very low. No, it is not as whisper quiet as a higher end machine, but the sound level is not at all objectionable.
Excellent value - lots of features, works well, looks great, holds a boat-load of dishes, and has lots of convenience features. Can't ask for more than that!
>>>>>>>Update June 2010: It's been a year since I've had this, and I'm still 100% satisfied with the machine. I run about 2-3 loads per week and so far I've not had one item not come out perfectly clean. I use an enzyme-based detergent and the rinse-aid. Settings that work for me are adaptive wash with the high-temp option.
I usually run the machine after dinner and then unload it the next morning. To save on electricity, I don't use the heated dry. I find that dishes come out completely dry, but plastic items are sometimes damp, especially if it's humid out. Usually the plastic is not damp enough to warrant a towel dry except for a few pieces that I have with a recessed base - enough water collects in the indentation to warrant a quick pass with a towel before putting it back into the shelf.
I've tried the sanitizing rinse and that does help dry items a little bit better. I tend to use that only when I have really greasy dishes and want an extra high temp rinse to ensure all grease is gone.
Zero mechanical problems so far. Hope this keeps up!

Emerson Fans CF955BS 54" Midway Eco Contemporary Energy Star Steel Ceiling Fan w/ Light & Remote Review

Emerson Fans CF955BS 54 Midway Eco Contemporary Energy Star Steel Ceiling Fan w/ Light and Remote
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased one of these fairly expensive ceiling fans for our large family room. I've had it for a few months now.
Pros:
1. Looks sleek, especially with the tapered blades
2. Has 6 speeds for the fans, more than most other fans
3. Fan is very quite - at higher speeds you get wind noise, but no audible motor noise
4. Remembers the last setting even after power outage
5. Moves lots of air at high settings
6. Energy efficient
Cons:
1. The fan buzzes loudly all the time whenever light is turned on
- As long as the light setting is "on" (regardless of whether bulbs are installed or not) the unit buzzes loudly
2. Lighting is mediocre
- Does not provide good ambient lighting - there is glare directly underneath the fan, but other areas of the room stay somewhat dark
- Uses uncommon GU-24 socket CFL's
3. No flush-mount option for standard height ceilings - instead they have a problematic "short" downrod option
4. Doesn't come with wall-mount option for the remote control
5. Difficult to install
- No wire to hang fan to anchor during installation, so you have to hold up the fan near the ceiling while you attach the power wires, which means you need at least two people perched on ladders
- Short rod is incredibly tricky and difficult to install, things just don't seem to fitSo, no matter how energy efficient that fan is, I just can't stand the loud buzzing. We have standard 8-ft ceilings so we purchased the short rod so it wouldn't hang down too low, but that proved very difficult to install (things just don't fit right with the short rod). I had to pay an electrician $150 to install it for me, and even he had a difficult time installig it. At one point he was about to give up saying the parts just didn't fit, but after one last push we finally were able to get the rod pins into the rod. However after he installed it we noticed the loud constant buzzing. Emerson customer support admitted that this was not an uncommon problem, and at first said it was probably the receiver and offered to send me a new receiver (the small box inside the fan that receives commands from teh remote). But then later they said they had replaced receivers for other customers and the buzzing still continued, so they said they would send me an entire new fan.
So after a few weeks I received a new fan from Emerson, and lo and behold the new fan has the exact same problem! Whenever the lights are turned on, it gives off a high pitched electrical buzzing noise. This time I took it apart and found out what the cause was. It was in fact the electronic receiver. Whenever the light turned "on" so that the receiver routes power to the light fixture, it buzzes (doesn't matter if the light bulbs are in or not). Since there is nothing drawing power, this means that the relay or electrical switch mechanism they use for the lights is just very poorly designed and/or manufactured. Not what I would expect in a higher priced fan like this one.
So now I have to wait for them to send me a third fan, and in the mean time we can't use the light because the high pitched buzzing drives us crazy.
Overall, this fan is not worth the money, even if it didn't buzz so loudly (in my opinion, the features should yield a price point of about $250-$300, not the $400+ it's currently priced at). But combine the high price with the issues, it's not something I would recommend to anyone right now, at least until they redesign their electronics.

Whirlpool Gold GU2300XTVQ Full Console Dishwasher Quiet Partner III Sound Package - White Review

Whirlpool Gold GU2300XTVQ Full Console Dishwasher Quiet Partner III Sound Package - White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First and foremost, this does a very good job washing dishes. It is pleasantly quiet and has features that are useful, and then some.
It is a good value for money as a mid level appliance, which if you are careful, you can currently get in the $450-$500 price range (out-the-door price, but not including installation).
A few features that are very useful:
The Powerscour option, allows one to fold down one row of rack tines and conveniently face casserole dishes and baking pans directly into the flow of several water jets. It may not clean 100% of a heavily enameled food on a baking dish but it will soften even the toughest job to an easy wipe off removal. This is very convenient.
While I've not thought about noise from a dishwasher as a feature before, this machine has a soft kind of processing noise that is more reassuring than distracting.
The utensil rack fits neatly in the door. It is also flexibly designed so it can be moved to the bottom rack. This is an efficiency gain on other models because it leaves more space to do other dishes on the bottom rack.
The rinse aid is used very efficiently. It seems that 1/4 cup of rinse aid will last for about 4 dishwasher loads, and you do not need to refill in between.
A few improvements would move this from "very good" to "excellent":
The tine rows on the bottom rack are either not spaced wide enough or not constructed in such a way as to properly secure plates. They will roll and even crash into other dishes with even slight movement of the bottom rack. Anytime one pulls out the rack or tips it with the door, the plates will shift and often roll and clang into other dishes.
The silverware slots in the door utensil holder are too small and spaced too tightly. One can get scratched too easily trying to maneuver too many utensils into the too tightly spaced slots. Rather than cramming 11 utensils into one tiny compartment, maybe 9 with slightly larger slots. With two open compartments, there would still be enough room to accommodate 14 place settings total (42+ utensils).
Even with a rinse aid, the dishwasher does not quite get the dishes dry, even if they sit another hour after the heated dry cycle has completed. This is not a big deal to me, having small residues of water remaining, but would move this from very good to excellent.
A few minor improvements also,
Simplicity makes things better. There are a bit too many buttons on the console, crammed together. Eliminating say a button for one cycle and one option and one delay start option would help a lot. (My suggestions would be combine "china" and "express wash", combine "high temperature wash" and "sani-rinse" option, and eliminate the 4 hour delay start (leaving 2 and 6 hours).
The adaptive wash cycle could be made much more flexible to accommodate the size of a load and its dirtiness, it doesn't seems to vary much in time of wash cycle but could be very useful if it greatly customized the wash cycle to the particular load.
In the end, the quality of workmanship will prove itself out. My expectation is 10 years with no repairs, we'll see. I will be delighted to get 14 years plus.
Overall, this is a good value and does its main purpose of washing well, drying not so well.

Sylvania 14502 50 Watt PAR20 Narrow Flood Light Bulb / 30 Degree Beam Spread / 120 Volt / 50PAR20
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Living in the boonies, I like to have a lot of light bulbs on hand. When we bought a new ceiling light fixture for our kitchen we tried a number of bulbs in it. Our light fixture hangs to a little more than 6' above the floor and has two "cans" 1' apart for the two light bulbs. The cans are nearly cone-shaped. They are a matte white inside. The fixture calls for two 50-watt R20 bulbs. Bulbs that are length 20 are just right. 30 length bulbs hang down too low below the cans.
This light bulb worked better than P20 because it has a relatively flat lens, and has a very narrow glass edge that lets out the right amount of light below the "can". The matte white finish inside the cones does not reflect well. The texture on the inside of the lens diffuses the light very nicely and minimizes glare. The two 50-watt light bulbs gave more light than other styles of bulbs that we had on hand.
I could not find this bulb in any local store, thus here I am at amazon and glad to find it.
If you are replacing a bulb, you will find "Capsylite" in the center of the lens. Very hard to read. You will also see "narrow flood" indicated by the "NFL" on the metal side in the middle of the bulb specs.

This unit was relatively easy to install. The baffle seems to match fairly well with a Halo 310W I picked up at Lowe's. My only complaints are you're limited to a white plastic baffle with the coilex ripples and the bulb's recessed position is fixed, so I couldn't quite get it to match my other standard can light. These are fairly subtle problems, but when you do it yourself, these are the things that bother you! As for performance, it is pretty quiet although not quite as much as I expected. I think some of the noise might be vibration transferring to the joists. In a 40sqft guest bath, it did a great job of keeping the room moisture-free during a hot shower, which is really why I bought it. I plan on installing one in the master bath now, as well.
