Nutone 665RP 70 CFM, 1500W Heat/Vent/Light - 665RP Review

We had a 25 year old version of the same heat/vent/light which was still, amazingly, working. It was a bear to get down, but once we did, the new one installed easily in the same space. It's much quieter, heats the space more quickly, and looks great -- the old one's grill had turned a murky yellow-orange and the light visor was bubbled. It's nice that we could get a similar but improved model that used the same sized hole.

Air King Through the Wall Exhaust Fan 180 CFM EWF-180 Review

Air King Through the Wall Exhaust Fan 180 CFM EWF-180
Average Reviews:

As a home-improvement contractor, I've been faced with the question of how to install additional ventilation in existing structures -- most often, the need for exhaust venting in a bathroom that had no original fan. In both cases where I've used this thru-wall fan, it's been the right solution at an extremely reasonable cost ... eliminating the need to cut into ceilings, deal with insulation, run power circuits in attics, cut holes in roofs, weave shingles, seal leaks, etc. It's easy to tap an existing power or lighting circuit, connect this fan, cut a rough-sized hole through the wall and connect the three pieces of the unit. If you need venting in a room that abuts an exterior wall, use this great solution!
And power/airflow? One elderly customer -- a real joker -- told me, "Boy, when I get out of the shower and turn on that fan, I'd better not be standing near it or it'll suck the towel right off me and pull it through the vent!"
I think he was joking ...!

This is a great fan. At 1.5 sones, it is nicely quiet but actually moves the air in the room at the rate it is reported to. I installed this unit in a 300 cu. ft. bathroom and it clears all evidence of the smell following toilet use in 3 minutes flat. Additionally, it keeps the room free of steam build up during showers as well so no mold on the walls! When I flip the switch to turn it on, I am standing next to the entry door and I can feel the air being drawn into the room at the door's edge. Additionally, if I hold my hand in front of the light switch cover or outlet cover, I can feel air being drawn through those openings as well. That's right, even through the minor cracks at the sheetrock edges air is drawn in!!! And yet, it is very quiet. I am a builder and I recommend this fan all the time to many very pleased clients. One note, I usually try to vent this to the outside as directly as possible. Shorter vent runs nean more efficient operation. Also, smooth, ridgid vent lines will be slightly more efficient in allowing unfettered air movement than ribbed, flexible duct work.

Bought this motor months ago and its still working. Needed a replacement motor for my Broan bathroom fan that burnt out. The shaft was slightly shorter than the one that was in there before, but it still works great. No problems at all installing it, just had to reinstall the shaft in the opposite direction so the fan I have would blow the air out instead of in(CW rotation). Definitely recommend buying if you have a Broan bathroom fan that's separate from the heat lamp. In fact, I came on here to buy another one because I had another one go out on me.

NuTone Model 769RFT Designer Fan/Light, 70 CFM 3.0 Sones with 4-Inch Duct Review

NuTone Model 769RFT Designer Fan/Light, 70 CFM 3.0 Sones with 4-Inch Duct

Just replaced a ceiling light with this fan/light combo. Selected this model since it is designed for a fluorescent light (13W, 4-post) not included). I had adequate attic space which is needed for an existing location, where the housing must attached to a ceiling joist with screws (not included). The housing needs a clamp connector for a standard 3/8" (1/2" KO). I used NuTone's (Broan) Wall Ducting Kit to keep it simple (note: it only has 5 feet of 4" flex duct).
Directions lack the details for a DIY'er, so it took me most of a day to convert and install. But, it was worth it...great fan and light operation.
Installation requires a 9 1/8-inch square cut in the ceiling right next to the ceiling joist. I used two #10 x 5/8", and two #10 x 3/4", pan head phillips-head screws to attach the housing, and the existing single wire for electric - so fan and light operate at the same time (you can have dual operation if different wiring is used).
The noise level is 3 sones, which is about mid-way between quiet and loud, acceptable for our locations.
Fan works well taking out shower steam and moisture.
I am very please with this model. I've got another one on order to install in the other bathroom.
Update 9/26/2010: Just installed the second one...a little more involved since I had to bring electrical wiring to the location. Learned a lot from the first one and installation went well.
This is a fine fan/light combo which does a great job and looks nice on the ceiling. Highly recommend.

I don't feel that this fan draws as much air as some 110 CFM fans I've seen in action, but it does a pretty good job. The 4.0 sones are fine, in my opinion. It is not whisper quiet (not supposed to be), but it's not nearly as loud as our old fan either. It is a perfectly acceptable noise level for us.
Side note: Make sure you are using this with 4-inch duct or bigger. A friend bought this fan thinking they could attach it to their existing 3-inch ducts and it was crazy loud and barely drew any air. They changed out the ducts to the right size and now it is fine.

Panasonic FV-11VQ5 WhisperCeiling 110 CFM Ceiling Mounted Fan Review

Panasonic FV-11VQ5 WhisperCeiling 110 CFM Ceiling Mounted Fan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Panasonic FV-11VQ5 is the newest release from Panasonic in the WhisperCeiling series of ventilation fans. Panasonic discontinued the .8 Sone, 110 CFM, FV-11VQ3 for this next-generation, enhanced version. It is essentially the same model with some minor variations, the most noticeable being a reduction in operational sound level from .8 Sone to .3 Sone. The power consumption between the two units has also been reduced from 30.7W to 21.1W (at .1 static pressure), which drops the Amperage from .26 to .18, making this unit more efficient.
The FV-11VQ5 is relatively large, but a fantastic performer for the money. The rough-in cut required to mount the unit is 10-1/2" x 10-1/2". The outside grill is 13" x 13". A cardboard template is supplied to assist in drawing the physical layout of the rough-in cut on the ceiling. This greatly enhanced the ease of installation. Opening the unit, there's little that needs to be done other than remove the tape from the internal assembly. The mounting rails and screws are included.
Aside from sizing and attaching the ventilation ductwork, all that's required is to mount the unit and wire it up. Wiring is as simple as attaching a white, black, and green wire to an existing AC line and ground source.
My wife and I installed this unit together in the attic within an hour. We had complications with the ductwork that vents out the roof not lining up, which required some custom cuts to complete a final mounting. This took about 30 minutes, but aside from this, it is a very simple ventilation fan to install.
Following the installation, I turned the breaker back on and had my wife do the honors with the wall switch. She pushed it and after a second looked at me with that look that says, "Uh oh... Something's wrong!" After a few seconds we heard the sound of air rushing, but no motor! Our old fan was a 4.5 Sone unit, which is very loud! This unit almost sounds like it's not even running. It's so quiet, what you hear most is air rushing through the vets.
To check that things were venting well, I took half a dozen match sticks and lit them about four feet below the unit and waited for the flame to work down the wood, then blew them out. Smoke spindled its way up and out of the vents. Next, I took a lighter and lit it just below the vent and moved it around the grill. I could see the flame being pulled in the direction of the vent opening. It indeed was working quite well.
Overall, we're very happy with this unit and would recommend it to anyone installing it in a residential home or small area. Those interested should realize this is a very quiet unit. Some people like a fan to block sounds that emanate from the bathroom so others can't hear any quiet noises. For those who would like this from a ventilation fan, this is not the fan for you. I'd suggest looking for a fan with a rating of approximately 2 Sones. Anything less than 1 Sone is really very quiet.
Panasonic makes very good quality fans with many offerings in their "Whisper" ventilation line. The FV-11VQ5 is a quality unit within the WhisperCeiling series. Prospective consumers should also consider Panasonic's WhisperFit, WhisperGreen, WhisperLite, WhisperValue, and WhisperWarm line of ventilation fans before making a final determination which is right for you.

Decided to order this model because of the cost, performance, and low noise. I installed it a basement bathroom I am remodeling and so far it has worked out really well. Easily hung between two basement joists, was fairly simple to wire in the way I wanted, and easily installed 6'' duct work that I picked up at the local home improvement store. The fan is super quiet (you can barely hear it is on). It comes with two CFLs, which was nice and they provide a good overhead light for the bathroom.

Panasonic FV-11VHL2 WhisperWarm 110 CFM Ceiling Mounted Fan/Heat/Light/Night-Light Combination Review

Panasonic FV-11VHL2 WhisperWarm 110 CFM Ceiling Mounted Fan/Heat/Light/Night-Light Combination
Average Reviews:

I purchased a Panasonic FV-11VH1 heater fan for my new home construction. Outwardly, the unit appeared well made, and the unit operated flawlessly (and very quietly I must add) for about 5 months. As a sidenote, I also purchased four other Panasonic bathroom ventilating fans, and all appear high quality and all are very quiet.
Unfortunately, after only 5 months of VERY light use, the FV-11VH1 unit heater failed. Upon removal and close scrutiny, I discovered the electrical wire lead that connects 120V service to the heating element had literally deteriorated, and subsequently fell off. When I state deteriorated, I mean to the point of virtual dust. Accordingly, the heater element did not work simply due to lack of incoming electric service. I then tested (using ohm meter) the heating element itself to discover it was still operable, and subsequently tested it under 120V power to verify it did work...which it did. I then scrutinized the heater's electrical connection prongs, and discovered the special heatproof insulation surrounding the failed prong/connector had, like the wire lead, deteriorated.
As the unit was only five months old, and still under three year warranty, I got on line to contact Panasonic for service instructions. Despite being very savvy on line, I could not find any contact information for Panasonic Service Centers. I called all three Panasonic Consumer phone numbers, and all three numbers enabled me to speak to an automated voice giving Panasonic Service Center contact information. I called six Panasonic Service Centers (in three states) to find out they do not service the Heater / Fan units, and they did not what Panasonic Center did. Each Service Center rep was helpful, but stated they did not have product specific Service Center information. I inquired with each Service Center rep as to "how could I contact a human being at Panasonic to ask of service"...in each case, and without hesitation, the reps stated there is no way a human contact can be made via Panasonic Consumer Services. No matter how long I remain on the phone with the Panasonic automated voice system, there is NEVER an option to "press 0" or similar to actually speak with a representative.
I have emailed Panasonic four times now, each time utilizing their Customer Service contact format. I have received automated responses from Panasonic, all identical, and all stating to contact my installer. My installer is an electrician, has been involved in this fiasco, and marvels that we cannot get part number specific information...much less, actual warranty service. He will never recommend another Panasonic heater fan again...
I am technically able to repair my unit, but would like to order the correct parts via Panasonic. Unfortunately, there are NO SCHEMATICS WHATSOEVER available to me, as a consumer. Accordingly, I can find parts and part numbers for my unit, but cannot unconditionally identify that I am purchasing the correct part. I do know this...the replacement heating element for this unit is $12 less that my original purchase price. Add in shipping cost, and my total cost (I've given up on warranty service) is greater than the cost of a new unit.
I have been a Panasonic fan since about 1975, and have always had good luck with the entire range of Panasonic products. This particular scenario has changed my opinion 180 degrees, as I will never purchase another Panasonic product again, and am pleased to be able to announce to others my tale in an era where customer service is paramount.

Average Reviews:

Bought the 90 cfm/2.5 sones unit to replace the builder's grade 50 cfm/4+ sones. The additional airflow was noticeable and the noise wasn't - just what I needed.
The frame is all plastic, which means no rust, though seeing how the bracket, motor, and motor mount is steel, I wouldn't place too much value on that aspect. The box is more rigid than the typical bent steel box, however, so there is value in that - no rattles.
Installation was a snap - literally. These units have a separate bracket that you screw into the joist, then snap the unit into place from below. It's much easier than the usual small-flange-at-the-edge mounting that other units use. Indeed, I spent less time installing this unit versus removing the old (working in a cramped attic space, nails to pry out, etc.) A plastic grommet and 3 wire nuts are included too - a nice touch.
The included materials note that ventilation fans have a 5 year warranty, not just a 1 year, so the manufacturer is confident that it'll last. I hope so too, as I intend to purchase more to replace the other noisemakers.

Hunter Fan Saturn 90053 Decorative Brushed Nickel Rings with Frosted Glass Review

Hunter Fan Saturn 90053 Decorative Brushed Nickel Rings with Frosted Glass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent quite a bit of time pricing, comparing, and researching various models of light/fan assemblies to install in the small bathroom off my master bedroom. After visiting all the local home improvement stores, I expanded my search online. I slowly narrowed down my options and this Hunter fan bubbled to the surface.
A few things to keep in mind as you're doing your due diligence to locate the fan that works for you.
First, you should be aware that most ventilation fans are made of white plastic. If your bathroom has a window that doesn't block the sun's UV, over time this nice white plastic will yellow.
I didn't want that, so this narrowed my options down to units that have no visible plastic. This GREATLY reduced my options.
Second, carefully consider whether you want a fan that is silent or near silent. I visited my local home stores and demoed these silent fans and decided I didn't want them. If they're totally silent, I can't tell if they're even on! I didn't like this. I wanted a little rushing sound just to let me know that it is, in fact, operating.
Ventilation fan noise is rated in "sones." Three or four sones is about as loud as a quiet conversation. Six sones is very loud. Any fan with a sone rating under 1 is almost totally silent. This Hunter fan is rated at 2.5 sones, which I found to be ideal. Since the fan is off the bedroom, it's loud enough to remind me it's operating, block out any quiet sounds I don't want anyone in the bedroom to hear, yet it is quiet enough not to bother whoever is trying to sleep in the bedroom.
The fan is rated at 80 CFM, which is just right for my bathroom (I calculated it needs a minimum 30 CFM fan). If you have a small bathroom, I'd suggest a fan two to three times the minimum CFM rating for your room. The higher the CFM, the greater the breeze you will feel through the room. When you're taking a shower, too much breeze can feel uncomfortable. It might be tempting to go overboard with the CFM rating, but if you're like me and enjoy a comfortable and relaxing shower, I'd suggest you get only what you need.
I found installation to be a breeze! Aside from the usual miserable attic installation issues, installing this fan was painless. The assembly is light and the fan housing compact (only 6-1/2" high). After the housing is installed in the attic, the wiring, fan, and light are installed below, in the bathroom.
The final installation is outstanding! No plastic visible anyplace. The marbled and frosted glass is very attractive and the hush of the fan is exactly what I was looking for.
I'd recommend this fan for those who, like me, are looking for an easy fan to install that is both attractive and functional. The Hunter series of ventilation units meets these expectations at a reasonable price.

I was a little surprised when this light arrived as its not what is pictured! This is a perfectly square light and fan fixture. It fit and looked good so I intsalled it and I like it. It runs well. Just be cautioned that it is NOT what is pictured.

Broan 472 Backdraft Damper/Reducer
This 10" to 8" duct reducer comes with spring-loaded dual-dampers on the 8" end. I installed it on top of a Broan 10" Vertical Discharge Fan, and was disappointed in the fan's performance. When I held a hand near the fan's intake in the kitchen ceiling, some air was actually being blown down, when it was supposed to be sucked upward. Before completing connection of the damper/reducer to a roof cap via duct-work, I went into the attic to check it out from the top. Some air came through, but the problem was obvious -- the dampers on the Broan 472 were only going up about 25 degrees. When I lifted the dampers all the way up by hand, air output soared.
A spring forces the dampers closed when the fan is off. Holding the damper down that way reduces rattling in high-winds and keeps the outside air from coming in, but it also cripples a small fan's performance. To fix this, I removed the spring with wire cutters, and installed a screw at the top of the reducer on each side, at the 85 degree point, to stop the dampers from going past mid-way. With this screw-stop approach and no spring, gravity keeps the dampers down when the fan is off, and the fan's output is fine with a small fan, since the air doesn't have to push against a too-strong spring.
The spring-loaded damper approach should work OK as it comes from the factory if the unit is installed horizontally; but it doesn't work acceptably in the vertical position (with a small fan). Luckily, there's an easy fix.
The metal-work aspect of this product is excellent.
