Frigidaire FAH126S2T Through-the-Wall 12,000/11,700 BTU Room Air Conditioner Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Frigidaire FAH126S2T as a replacement for an old and failing Emerson QuietKool unit that came with our condo.
The unit is a tight fit in the Emerson wall sleeve with no room at the top and barely any on the bottom. The side have about 1/4 inch of clearance.
The instructions ask you to do some work outside the sleeve by installing a provided vent and adjusting the angle of the output. Being a computer guy I did none of this. I did install the supplied foam inserts to give the unit the correct angle for water drainage. Overall the install was easy and took less than 1/2 hour minus some sealing I need to do this weekend.
On the topic of performance this A/C delivers. We have a room with high vaulted ceilings and this quickly cooled it from 82 to 72. The various remote functions are very easy to access, though the remote sensing seems a bit out of place to me. Having to put the remote with line-of-sight to the A/C is not practical in our room.
The unit has the same noise level as the old one. For people who like it quiet it may be a bit too loud even on the slow setting. The compressor does not add much to the noise thankfully, unlike the Emerson.
Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase. Amazon delivered a great savings on the unit to boot, and free shipping made it worth the extra couple of days.

Protemp 70,000 Btu Reconditioned Oil Fired Heater Review

(More customer reviews)Just received my ProTemp 70K BTU kerosene heater yesterday and had a chance to try it out. Overall very pleased. The thing makes plenty of heat for my 2-car garage/workshop and works perfectly. Seems like it should last for 10-20 years of occasional use with proper maintenance. Fuel consumption was pretty moderate - I burned about a gallon and a half of kero with the unit cycling on/off using the thermostat for about 5 or 6 hours. As the design/features of these things is pretty standard, I'll just try to highlight anything that's out of the ordinary:
PROS
Works great, plenty of heat, and the thermostat works pretty well. Didn't trigger my CO alarm.
A pump pressure gauge is mounted in the rear of the unit, which makes flame adjustment a breeze.
Accessory plug could be handy
Weight is just right - enough to feel substantial and well built but not too heavy to move around with one hand. Suprisingly compact. It fits nicely on a big utility shelf when not in use.
Everything on the unit (except for the business end) stays remarkably cool when operating.
Manual is very specific with regard to venting requirements. (3 S.F per 100K BTU, so this unit needs about 2.1 SF of ventilation at 70K BTU) It's nice to have some hard data so that you can verify that adequate ventilation is provided. Not really something you want to guesstimate.
Buying reconditioned saved me some money. The unit arrived fully assembled (manual includes assembly instructions, so I'm guessing you get to assemble it if you buy a brand new one). Everything looks brand new except for a few scuffs on the paint.
CONS
It's noisy, and a little smelly. But that's pretty much unavoidable with these kinds of heaters. This one isn't really any better or worse in this regard than others.
The handle is mounted with 2 sheet metal screws into threaded clips. That arrangement didn't inspire a lot of confidence so I replaced them with 2 heavier bolts, lock washers, and nuts.
Nothing to separate the steel tank from the floor. I have a feeling that this will eventually result in scratches and rust. I'm considering some casters or heavy truck-bed lining on the bottom of the tank.

(More customer reviews)I bought this 3 years ago and it has worked really wel... that is until I went to fire it up this fall (what would be it's 3rd year of operation).
The fuel pump had issues - after a bunch of work it's ok again... but the unit itself is showing signs of use (as in the front metal diffuser plate is just about melted through) - this will certainly be the last winter for this unit.
Pros: has been reliable, lights quickly, minimal smoke and soot
COns: single speed, loud, not tri-fuel, difficult to refuel
In the end - I'd recommend and re buy this unit - it's cheaper than others and has served me very well to heat a shop/barn for 2 long Upstate NY winters.

(More customer reviews)I'm coming up on the second season of hard use. I have it in the bedroom and at night this thing will chill you out. During the day (I work nights) we get full sun and it still keeps you about 73 deg. If temps outside reach 90+ it'll keep you about 75. I use it in conjuction with old central air unit that will keep downstairs nice but once you get above the first floor good luck. This runs almost 24 hours a day during 7 months and all you have to do is vacuum the back (cooling fins) and vacuum the front filter (slides out). You never have to drain (I do after winter sets in). I liked ours so much I bought a second for the 3rd floor. As far as noise...you know it's there but like anything else you get used to it and can tune it out. The only bad thing about this is I think the portables are a little more than the window units and don't cool as much but they aren't "portable" and can be rolled into a closet or extra room. The set-up on these is considerably easier also: open window, add insert, duct tape insert into window and you're ready to rock. Another bad is that if you loose the remote or the batteries go (over 2yrs and still good) you can't control the unit without it (temp, fan speed, mode, timer).

This product makes it possible to take a long Jacuzzi bath. It doesn't heat the water before it comes in but keeps it warm when the jets are on. It turns off when the jets are off. It also has an overheat mechanism that makes it shut off automatically to prevent it from burning out, but it turns back on when it cools off. It is not very large (I was surprised).
Make sure you get the right one for your tub. We contacted Jacuzzi directly to make sure. They make several kinds (intake and out and for older and newer designs of tubs). This one is an older model. We bought our tub in 2003. It might work with newer Jacuzzi tubs or other whirlpool tubs, but I'm not sure. Check with your manufacturer first.

(More customer reviews)We used an unvented natural gas heater in our garage for several years. With many more cold days this past winter, we began having concerns with the excess amount of moisture and condensation produced by non-venting. Having already roughed-in the electrical and thermostat wiring for a unit heater when the garage was built, we decided it was time to switch to a vented heater.
We looked at the Modine and Big Maxx heaters and selected the Big Maxx 45 when it went on sale for $399 at Northern Tool. We ordered the heater and had it shipped to a store in our area to avoid shipping charges. The heater arrived much quicker that we anticipated. Our original plan was to install the heater sometime during the summer and be ready for next winter. The next weekend was nice weather so we decided to go ahead and install the Big Maxx.
Since the heater needed to mount at a 45 degree angle to the room, we mounted unistrut channel to the ceiling joists and mounted the heater thereto. We used category I gas vent from Lowe's. Installation was simple and straight forward. Then we turned the heater on.
The induced draft motor made a LOT of noise and vibration. Then the blower fan came on and you needed hearing protection to stay in the room. In the bedroom above the garage, it actually sounded like someone was running a couple of hammer drills. Being an engineer, I inspected both blowers to see why they vibrated so badly. The induced draft blower had a nice looking squirrel cage blower but the shaft hole was drilled off center. The next day we took the heater down, boxed it up and returned it to Northern as defective.
Next we ordered a Modine heater. Installation was a little more complicated because we already had the hole in the wall for the vent. We mounted this heater slightly differently to take advantage of the existing hole. This heater required Category III venting for our installation so we ordered Z-Vent online. The Modine heater is quiet as a mouse. As they say, "you get what you pay for".

Rinnai ES38-N Direct Vent Wall Furnace, Natural Gas Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this to replace the original furnace in my 900 sq ft, 1986 Mobile Home located in North Dakota. I thought I may need to use supplemental heat during extended sub-zero temperatures, but the Rinnai has had no problem keeping the place warm- even when it's dropped to -24 outside. The house is situated on a block foundation, and I have replaced all of the windows with Low E units; also I sealed off the old heating ducts to get rid of any drafts. The previous owner had already updated the doors with full sized insulated units.
The furnace is a little noisy when warming up the place in the morning, but when it's maintaining temperature it's very quiet. My last house was heated by a wood stove, and the Rinnai delivers constant, quiet heat in much the same way.
My only complaint is with the shipping- if you do buy one of these, be sure to contact the seller and have them reinforce the bottom of the box, as mine appeared to have dropped out while it was being carried. There is a piece of particle board inside the bottom of the box, but the the outside needs to be encircled with strapping tape(or crated) because the box will not hold up well when it's sent by UPS. The damage to my unit was minor, but could have been prevented had the box been reinforced. I chose to install the Rinnai as it was, because the cold weather had arrived and I didn't want to delay getting it into service.

Step 1: I wanted to work comfortably in a 22 x 22 (9 foot ceiling) garage in the winter. Figuring I'd need lots of heat, I bought a portable 40,000 btu propane heater. It exhausts lots of carbon monoxide, so you have to partially open a door or window to the outside to let [cold] fresh air in -- which seriously lowers heater efficiency. The heater warmed the garage, but the approach wasn't satisfactory -- i.e., the fumes were so bad, I stopped using it. It was also very loud, like the hissing of escaping air from a large air boat; plus, when the propane tank ran out, the heater stopped; each time you needed heat, you had to drag it out, connect it to the tank, leave plenty of floor space around this self-contained-blowtorch; put it all away when you were done; and of course find a place to store it. Also, there was no thermostat. All in all, a royal pain in the keister.
Step 2: I bought one of these electric heaters. It has only half the btu's of the propane unit, but there is no need to open a window or door for ventilation. It also has a thermostat, so you can set it (to a number, not a temperature), and come back 30 minutes later and be in relative comfort. On days in the low 30s, it will keep the garage in the 60s, which is fine for working.. (My attached garage ceiling and 2 walls are insulated.) My heater is mounted high up on a wall, but it can also be mounted to hang from the ceiling, as long as the clearances laid out in the instructions, are followed. In any case, once mounted, it is out of the way, and always ready. There's nothing to haul out or set up when you need heat -- just turn it on. When done, just turn it off. This heater needs a dedicated 30-amp 220-volt circuit. You wouldn't want to use this every day, due to electricity costs, but for occasional use, it is perfect.
My advice is to skip step 1.
