I am usually a big fan of LG products because of their focus on making them user friendly with some well-thought-out features. However, this product has been a disappointment. Less than 2 months after our purchase we had to have the computer control board replaced. The ice maker frequently gets jammmed with refrozen ice cubes because of the design of the outlet which allows ice cubes to thaw and then refreeze at the outlet. In addition, the top freezer drawer gets ice build-up that makes the drawer hard to open. I thought defrosting freezers was something that was in the past! To top it off, we have already had one of the door racks break. This unit is far too expensive to have this many strikes against it!

(More customer reviews)Water and ice worked for about 2 minutes, since then I have not been able to get any ice or water from the door. Whirlpool sent some parts and admitted it is a common problem because the waterlines freezes, but it still doesn't work. I attempted to defrost it with a hair dryer for 2 hours but that didn't work either. It freezes produce closing the humidifier slots helps some. The touch panel is fussy it doesn't always register your preference. 2 repair calls and it is still not fixed this is a high end disaster. This is a new design and Whirlpool has some serious design work to do on this model.

This unit is a tad shorter than others in this size class. It needs only 68.5" of clearance for the portion of the unit behind the hinges. There is a plastic cord holder/dust cover on the back left top of the ice box. This was a cover for a recessed area that looks like where the water connects to the ice maker. I had to remove it to fit under the 68.5" face frame I had. This leaves about 1/4" top clearance at the face frame of the upper cabinet (of course 2" above top when you get past the face frame). I did cover the recessed area with packing tape to keep dust out.
The touch screen is a little finicky about where you touch. To switch ice types or turn ice off, you actually don't touch the screen rather the top curved area of the ice/water portal - not very clear in manual, luckily there one one obscure picture that showed the correct spot.
The middle "flex" drawer looks very promising.
Will update this over time.
Update: 06/17/10
I did see a better picture about turning ice off - better that my initial review. Ice maker has a somewhat different and slightly louder "ice drop" sound. The ice making frequency could be faster, but only time will tell if it keeps up with summer demand. I did have to tweak the alignment of the upper doors - could not be simpler!!!

(More customer reviews)I actually have the EI26SS65GS which only differs slightly with the touch controls.
The high point of this refrigerator that makes it stand out from the crowd is that it is fully constructed in stainless steel while the others just have stainless steel cladding in the front but not on the sides.
This makes for a handsome refrigerator since this is not a counter depth model so the sides show.
Both freezer and refrigerator interior has ample storage. The interior lights have a nice effect of being initally dim at first and then fully brightens up.
A good point is the vacation mode you can set that saves electricity by not turning on the defrosting cycle when you are away.
My only grievance is the the design of the ice dispenser which delivers the ice (both cubes and crushed) which such force and intensity that the ice is spilled all over the floor and a clean up is always necessary. My 4 year old kid is so afraid to use it.
The delivery men do not install the water dispenser hose so I had to do it myself and it was somewhat of an effort threading it properly. I mis-threaded the first hose and had to buy an aftermarket replacement at $7. It seems that the original hose is hard to find item.
For the $2,500 we paid for it, we expected that the Ice dispenser flaw would have been discoverd and remedied before production.
FYI: unit made in Mexico.

(More customer reviews)The fridge is nice over all lots of shelves to adjust etc. After about 8 months in I started to hear a knocking noise sometimes late at night coming from the fridge. Diagnosed the ice maker in the top left gets jammed up and tried to keep making ice it will not shut off so the gears that turn the ice into the bin just grind away. This is going on for about 5 months now and sometimes its once a week and lately its every day sometimes twice a day. I am in contact with GE to fix but other reviews many people were told it was normal and there was no fix. Just a fair warning if you are going to drop over $2k on a fridge I would make sure they have this issue fixed. If you look around on the Net its a very common problem with this fridge with a lot of very frustrated users and customer service techs trying to tell me its normal for my fridge to sound like someone is knocking on the door for 1 hour straight at all hours of the day and night which is unacceptable.

(More customer reviews)I think this is the best designed refridgerator available as far as space and convenience goes.
First, it has the largest capacity, at 29 cubic feet. It is the same exterior size as a 26 cubic feet unit, but has tighter packed insulation so there is more area inside. The shelving is efficient and flexible. There is a lot of storage in the door.
I think the design is much better than the LG refridgerator. LG has the icemaker in the door, so there is hardly any door storage. The layout of the shelves isn't as good either.
Second, all the interior components are well made. The drawers are solid and roll out it easy. In the GE and Westinghouse refridgerators, the drawers are cheap and hard to slide in and out. (Samsung used to make the GE and Westinghouse refridgerators, but might not anymore).
Third, the icemaker and cold water dispenser is at an angle. It takes up less door space, so there is less room lost inside, and it made so that any size pitcher can be filled.
The downsides:
1. The icemaker has a small capacity and is slow to refill. But, it has been good enough for us.
2. It is a little noisy sometimes and sometimes makes a high pitched whine.
French door refridgerators are all the rage now. They have been around since the 1950s, but never caught on until now. The leaders were the two Korean companies, LG (which used to be Lucky and Goldstar) and Samsung. These two companies made most of the french door refridgerators for all different brands.
If you don't need the indoor ice dispenser, some have an icemaker down in the freezer compartment. This opens up even more room in the refridgerator section.
UPDATE: I FORGOT THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE:
The cheese drawer on this slides underneath the door shelves. That means, you do not have to open the doors all the way to slide out the cheese drawer. I cannot swing both doors fully open. On most refridgerators, that means the cheese/meat drawer hits the door shelves and you can only open it a little bit. With the Samsung, you can just open the doors 90 degrees and still get full access to the drawer.

(More customer reviews)My refrigerator is 2 1/2 years old. The ice maker is a huge problem. With poor ice insulation, ice always clumping together. Exterior easily dents, and shows hand & finger smudges.
The refrigerator just stopped working. Freon leak, location unknown and it will cost approximately $700, if they can locate the leak. LG won't stand by their product. I think it's poor quality and I don't trust this unit. Freon leak in my kitchen!! Don't bother asking them to stand by their product, I just got "We can do nothing for you, mam." Don't buy LG or this model, unless you purchase the extended warranty $$$$.
