Freud FT2000E 3-1/4-Horsepower Electronic Variable Speed Plunge Router Review

I have an almost exactly opposite experience with Freud as that mentioned in the above review. I am on my second FT2000 and have always received great customer service the few times I needed service. I just sent it to Freud USA and they fixed it within a week, only charging me once for a repair. It's a great router: quiet and powerful with easy to reach controls. As a professional woodworker, I recommend it without reservation.

Makita RF1101KIT 2-1/4 HP Industrial Router Kit Review

Makita RF1101KIT 2-1/4 HP Industrial Router Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I needed a new router (or two), so I could keep my old router hooked up to a jig all the time. I was looking for a powerful and compact plunge router and a D-handle router in a combination kit with ¼ and ½ inch collets, and variable speed. I could not find any such kits.
In the past, the only corded tools I would purchase were Milwaukee or Porter Cable brands, but the Makita RF1101KIT 2-1/4 HP Industrial Router kit changed that.
Formerly, I used Makita brand for cordless tools exclusively. I have a Makita 9.6v drill that I used professionally, every day for two years and never had a problem. That drill is was purchased in the spring of 1986, and still works fine. It is now part of my collection of many Makita cordless tools, all of which are professional quality tools.
Since Makita offered a 2-¼ Router kit that has enough power to handle most of the bigger bits I use, and Milwaukee and Porter Cable didn't, it was an easy choice, but I still wanted a D-handle router.
Makita's Parts suppliers also offer a RD1101 2-1/4 HP D-Handle Router base that works fine with the RF1101 kit. The base is pricey, but not as bad as purchasing another router. **For safety reasons, it is advisable that you shorten the router power cord, or buy the cord for the rd110. This cord plugs into the D-handle base (Makita D-handle power supply cord AWG#16-3-0.7 - Part Number: 565055-7). This cord costs less than an average 25ft extension cord.
With the d-handle base added to the router kit, I now have three bases and don't have to spend the money for three different routers. The standard router base resides in my router table all the time. The D-handle is used for all fixed base routing, as well as a remote switch for the router table (until I purchase a bump type). The plunge base for plunge type work like mortises, stop dados.
The 1100 and 1101 series routers are very well built. The collets swap out quickly and also make stuck router bit shanks a thing of the past. You do need to use two wrenches that are provided to change bits and collets. I see this as a plus. A spindle lock or shaft lock type bit changing setup (what I had on my old router), puts too much stress on the router's shaft or arbor, which can weaken the shaft.
Other positives:
* This router has it is quiet for a router in it's amperage range.
* The kit comes with an extra clear base plate; I use it as a template to make other base plates.
* The dust collection is as good as it gets for a router. Although the dust collection attachment is clear, it does make it hard to see what happening around the bit. I hook it up to my Fein vacuum that automatically starts up with the tool, and it does pickup a large amount of saw dust, especially with upward spiral bits.
* The base uses standard Porter-Cable style template guides and is compact, but stable.
* An edge guide is also provided
* The soft start feature is a luxury that stops me from flinching and putting a death grip on the handles every time I start up.
* The router is light but solid, with out a lot of plastic.
* The plunge base has a turret style stop that allows plunges to be done incrementally in three steps.
I am so pleased with this router, that I have purchased other Makita corded power tools (LS1010 sliding compound miter saw, and four different sanders), all of which are top quality professional tools.

DEWALT DW625 3 HP Variable Speed Electronic Plunge Router Review

DEWALT DW625 3 HP Variable Speed Electronic Plunge Router
Average Reviews:

Best plunge router on the planet. Best plunging smoothness by far, best collet system and best construction. Noticed in one of the other reviews that the author thought that DeWalt made the Elu routers. The reverse is true. This router and the DW615 and DW621 are in fact made in Switzerland by Elu which is now a division of Black and Decker. The only minor complaint I have is that the router does not project the bit far enough forward in the maximum plunge position which is a factor in router table use. The Hitachi TR12 and M12V are superior in this regard and much cheaper, but they don't have the smoothness of plunge and exquisite quality of the DW625. For freehand use it's unbeatable, for router table use the M12V is a better bargain and might be just as useable.

Bosch RA1200 Deluxe Router Table Review

Bosch RA1200 Deluxe Router Table
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought this table a few days ago and am generally happy with the sturdiness of the table itself. However, the left fence did not line up with the right fence. I think the fence is made out of cast aluminum not iron as it is pretty lite. I set the fence on the table and it wobbled, when I checked with a straight edge it was 1/16" off, the left side of the left fence tiled backward. I took the fence back and got a replacement fence and it was ok. The way the fence mounts to the table is with carriage bolts, this seemed pretty tacky to me for such an expensive table. When ever you adjust the fence, you have to reach under the table and apply pressure to the carriage bolts to keep them from turning as you try to retighten. The mounting plate has hole patterns for bosch routers so my dewalt would not fit without drilling, my Porter Cable fit into the existing holes ok. The base plate has no provision for adjusting the height to make it flush with the table, mine is lower than the table by about 1/16 inch. This was noticable because the first board I ran through it hung up on the base plate, then the chamfer was not perfect because of the warped fence. Not very impressive. I will fix the base plate by drilling 4 holes in the corners and threading them and installing allen screws for leveling. I would probably but this table again because I need something portable but I am not happy with having to "fix" the table to make it work right.

Freud FT3000VCE 3-1/4-Horsepower Variable Speed Plunge Router Review

Freud FT3000VCE 3-1/4-Horsepower Variable Speed Plunge Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
(Editted from a Fine Woodworking forum post that I wrote.)
I've actually owned the FT3000VCE for about 5 months and can state that it's a truly fine tool. I had read a Fine Woodworking review of the 2 1/2 hp and many user comments at Amazon, etc. before deciding on this 3 1/4 model. I also did the same with all the major manufacturer's models including Dewalt, Triton, Milwaukee, Bosch and Porter Cable. My research included both the 2 1/2 HP and the available 3 1/4 HP. I was specifically interested in a table router.
If you want a table router and are familiar with some of the more traditional routers as used in a table, then you know what the concerns and problems are (access, adjustment, dust, etc.). You probably know what features are critical (bit changing, adjustment, power and wear-and-tearability). I found that the FT3000VCE is great for all of these with one minor (and temporarily acceptable) limitation. The biggest concern I had from reading all the reviews was the impact of wear-and-tear -- Triton, Milwaukee and the Freud 2/12 hp were cited as vulnerable on this with inappropriate use of plastic for wear-and-tear parts. All I can say is that Freud must have been reading those review, because as far as I can tell those critical parts have now been replaced with metal (specifically the height adjustment socket). Bit changing is above table and great! The bottom of the router (which faces up in the table) appears to be sealed from dust.
My one minor issue is that height (depth) adjustment is a little tedious. Cranking up to expose the bit and to lock the spindle is stiff (which is good -- you don't want it shifting on you) due to the weight of the router and strength of the springs. There is no simple top release to quickly move the router up into bit-changing position. A 2-inch round knob is provided to crank the router up and down (down is relatively easy), but up is where the tedious come in -- it's not quick). I've temporarily accepted it (and it IS minor, though in a production environment it means lost time), but I've augmented that round handled crank with a properly sized allen wrench (easier and faster, but somewhat rougher on the hands). What I really want is a true crank handle which would make this a relatively quick process. If Freud doesn't come out with one (and as far I'm concerned it should be free to early purchasers), I will soon end up making one to fit either the supplied knob or to fit on the allen wrench. (As an aside for this, I normally have a fence about 3" high mounted on my table. The supplied cranking tool happens to bang my fingers on the metal edge of that fence -- not comfortable. I don't want to take the fence off with every bit change or adjustment and the Allen wrench resolves that because it's about 6" long. If the fence is off, the Allen wrench works great because I can just swing it around crank-like with the short end in the socket -- as long as the bit isn't in the way of the short 1 1/2" clearance.)
Aside from all this, the Freud FT3000VCE works great, has the power to never bog down even with a 3" panel raising bit, starts smoothly and, so far as I can tell, has no runout problem at all (I haven't measured, but my joints are precise and tight). I don't use it out of the table, but I did try it our because I was concerned with the weight and size for a hand held. I was wrong to be concerned! I felt more in control than with any other router I've used including my Bosch 2 1/2 hp.
I guess there is one other problem with that round cranking tool: It has precision indicators down to 1/254" for height adjustment, but I haven't yet figured out a way to make it work by itself -- I have to mark a spot on the table to actually check the adjustment. This hasn't bothered me at all (except for being puzzled about how to use it) since I always measure and check my height (or depth) on scrap before routing. I can't say that would change even if the indicators worked as I had expected they should.
My router table is a decent Craftsman (after I modified it with a good aluminum plate). The router had no problem mounting in the existing plate mounting holes, but I did have to drill to get access to the height and spindle lock adjustment sockets in the router base. (I had expected more problems since the plate has been out for years before the router, but from what I can tell Freud used standard base mounting holes for 3 1/4 hp routers.)

Triton TRA001/TRC001 3-1/4-Horsepower Precision Router Review

Triton TRA001/TRC001 3-1/4-Horsepower Precision Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this router, based on a FineWoodworking review, to use in my router table. The appeal was: #1)being able to change bits from above the table (and NOT having to remove the router), #2)being able to adjust the bit height from above the table and #3)being able to do these without investing in an expensive router lift. It works as advertised - easy to adjust bit height, (mostly) easy to change bits from above the table. I am impressed that the collet rises well above table. Kudos as well to a well-designed, heavy-duty, plated, cast wrench. Nice collet lock (automatically engages when the collet is raised to full height). Smooth and powerful. It is mounted to my table, I located where to drill the hole for the adjusting lever (some sort of template would have helped...), and it seems to work well.
As regards router table use, the only goofy thing to me is the on/off switch. You have to push back a safety cover before depressing the switch - in free hand use I think this would be an annoying extra step. In the table the annoyance is that I normally leave the router switch on, plug it into an outlet in my table, and operate it from an external switch - not a problem until it is time to change bits. Raising the collet above the table is supposed to engage a lockout (that little cover) so that you won't accidentally turn on the router while changing a bit. However if the switch is already turned on the collet won't raise all the way until you reach under the table and turn it off - and that's a little clumsy because it is on the backside. Then, of course, you have to turn it back on (clumsy) before starting out again. If you followed that - not a big deal, and I suppose it is a reasonable safety trade-off. I'll get used to it. One more thing that is a little odd is the plunge mechanism - I'm not sure why one would need more than a spring and a locking lever on a smooth set of plunge rods, but Triton seems to think so - there is an odd knob with a push button in the middle (and a locking lever). In the little bit I handled it free hand I didn't quite figure it out (I had to read the instructions for cryin' out loud!). This would only be an issue for me if I was using it free hand, and I'm not - my reliable Bosch routers do that for me comfortably.
So, for router table: pretty great, especially for the price (less than most router lifts alone). For free hand use I don't think I'd pick it over the more conventional fare - Bosch, Porter-Cable, Dewalt, Makita, etc. It does come with quite a collection of extras for free hand use though, so you might want to handle it and compare prices.

Worlds best router has just gotten better. Here are the new and improved features that make us no. 1 in the woodworking shop. Changing from free plunge to rack and pinion mode as become even easier with just a push of a button. Our switch is now fully sealed in a rubber boot to ensure dust free operation. The plunge handle components have also been updated to metal gears for smoother operation and extended life. Our improved ¼-inch collet reducer makes changing to ¼-inch bit safer and easier. The Triton Router is the only router in the world where the full plunge depth brings the collet well past the base of the router and up through the table. With the collet freely exposed and an automatic spindle lock engaged you need only one wrenchabove the table to make effortless bit changes. This means an end to bruised knuckles while fumbling around between plunge posts with two collet wrenches. With the new plunge handle, its just as simple as pressing the button located in the middle of the handle, disables the rack and pinion mechanism, locks the handle and permits a conventional free plunge. For fine depth adjustment theres a micro winder, which is accessible throughout the full plunge range. The Triton Router can be plunged through its entire range on the micro adjuster alone. adjustments are instantaneous and precise; furthermore they stay that way. Fully enclosed front and rear safety shields with a very effective dust extraction port. Fully enclosed automatic power switch lock-out during bit changes to prevent accidental starting. A new collet design for securing and changing bits, which can be done with ease from above the table. powerful 3.25-horsepower motor with "soft start" function. Electronic variable speed (8,000 to 20,000 rpm) with speed maintenance under load.

With its user-friendly design and efficient, yet low-noise 2-1/4 HP motor with superior electronic feedback (10,000 - 23,000 RPM), the Porter-Cable 895PK offers precision for superior results. Brass post busing ensures durability, while a dust collection insert helps improve visibility and keep your workspace clean. For added convenience you can replace bits with one hand, a bypass control makes larger adjustments, and an easy-to-use knob tackles more precise and minute alterations to 1/128-inch. Made of durable die-cast aluminum, the 895PK makes it a breeze to make height adjustments and release the motor from above, rather than below, your workspace. Average Reviews:

According to Pat Warner, this router was specifically designed for use in a table. I've had one for about 3 years now, and I can't really fault it. I've never used it handheld; I have other routers for that. The soft-start is really much easier on the nerves. The adjustment mechanism - when it's clean - is fast and precise, but it does have a problem with sawdust clogging it. I was in the habit of changing bits while the motor was still mounted, but I developed the habit of taking it out to change bits and cleaning the threads on the base before remounting it. The problem of the cord I solved by shortening it to about six inches long and using an extension cord. The best was to do that is to shorten it at the motor end rather than the plug end. The motor is powerful enough to drive a horizontal panel-raising bit at full depth without hesitation. Operator hesitation is another matter though! As per PC practice, the buyer gets two separate collets, one for 1/4" shanks and the other for 1/2". The collet is tightened by using two wrenches (supplied) which is more reliable - if more awkward - than the shaft lock used on other makes.
