Kalamazoo 2FSM 2" W/Motor Kalamazoo Belt Sander Review

This is the 2"x48" Kalamazoo belt sander. It's made of sheared, folded and welded steel. It is of medium quality and medium power.
I have this sander and have been running it for about 6 months. The thing works great when you want to do a lot of consistent grinding -- as the setup of the machine is somewhat cumbersome. For instance, the same bolt that adjusts the platen position also adjust the position of the guard. You'll find you need either four (4) hands or some tricks to adjust _only_ the platen but not the guard as well. This is a real design compromise done in favor of saving the cost of a few bolts and a few extra punch-outs.
The only other complaint I have is that the platen doesn't appear to be hardened. My machine has concave sections worn into the platen in the areas I use most frequently for grinding. Count on fabricating (and heat treating) your own platen if you want to make nice flat grinds with this machine. Perhaps there is a backer plate material that can be used.
Also, the platen is painted, so plan on breathing the paint dust for the first few weeks you use the machine.
Otherwise, this is a great tool that uses the cheap 2x48 belts that come in every imagineable grit and material. I love the tool, I hate the corner cutting.

Grizzly G1066R 24" Drum Sander Review

A little trouble with the first shipment but could have been a ups issue. as far as the sander it works great. But expect a lot of set-up time. I probably spent a day on set-up but I'm very precise about my tools. Put casters on this bad boy, it weighs a lot. As far as sanding, it does an excellent job, super smooth after a couple of passes. Mine came with 60 and 100 grit paper on first and second drum, I changed it to 80/120 to get it ready for the random orbit sander for the final surface. Dust collection is not the best. I have it right beside my 1600cfm collector with 2 hoses, it gets the fine airbourne dust but leaves a lot on the wood and conveyor to fall off on the floor. The main thing this beast could use is some way of determining the set-up height. You have to push your wood in with the machine off and adjust by feel. It has plenty of power, never had it even grunt the least. The sandpaper attachment doesn't keep the paper tight enough for me so I spray the back of the sandpaper with contact adhesive just before rolling it on and then tape the ends with packing tape. I still have 24" of sanding because the rollers are about 25" to 25 1/2" long. I've had the machine for about six months and had no trouble. I find myself running everything through it from boards to gluded panels-(which I bought it for). Leaves edges square too. If your like me and can't justify a wide belt sander, I would recommend this powerful sander, and buy it again.

I purchased this drum sander a week ago.
I am rating the Performax 22x44 Plus Drum Sander with Closed Stand.
The stand is completely assembled in the box. This is the first machine that I have assembled and didn't have any extra bolts or washers. Assembly was exactly as it was supposed to be with everything lining up perfectly. All allen wrenches were provided for assembly.
I only had to tighten the brake pedal. The paint job is wonderful.
The motor assembly is extremely heavy, however, I was able to assemble the entire machine in 20 minutes.
I purchased the optional infeed/outfeed tables and think they are great but should cost less than $100, more like $50. No, they should be included, but are not necessary.
Performance: The motor is unbelievable quiet. No vibration at all. It is hard to tell sometimes if the motor is running it is so quiet. I sanded a 14 inch wide board and the results were amazing. Dust collection is a must and my Delta 1200 CFM pulls 99% of the dust.
I use a 30 AMP service for the drum sander.
Drum alignment was spot on. It was only off by .002 of an inch. No adjustment needed at all!
I give it 4 stars because the mobile base moves inline and does not allow you to easily steer the machine. I also wished the conveyor motor was a little beefier. No problems. I just would like the assurance. The motor adjusts from 0 to 10 fpm.
(Update 12-1-06: I received the "handy" tool to assist with sanding belt changes. I COMPLETELY disagree with the instructions for changing the sandpaper on the drum. It is not necessary to use this tool. I and my family think this way is much better: Attach the paper to both sides, but do NOT tighten it on the motor side as instructed. Simply tighten it by hand on the left side where you have much more room and can do it with your fingers. If you own this tool you will see exactly what I am talking about. It is so easy this way.
I am so happy I received this machine. It was given as an early Father's Day gift.
4/09 Update: If I were looking today for a sander, I would take a hard look at Steel City's dual drum sander. You can put two different grits of paper on the machine and really move things along. The price is so close. You also get two four inch dust ports on it. I would buy it now if I didn't already have the Jet/Performax. honestly

Whether you're a hobbyist or serious craftsperson, the JET 649005K 22X44 Plus 22-Inch 1-3/4 HP Drum Sander, 115-Volt 1-Phase will provide the smooth, consistent sanding you need to finish projects both big and small. One of the largest sanders available in its class, the 22X44 Plus allows you to sand material up to 44 inches wide with better accuracy than any other sander in its category.
Innovative SandSmart Technology for Automatic Speed RegulationThe 22X44 Plus features Jet's "SandSmart" control that continually monitors the load on the drum motor and automatically regulates the speed of the conveyor motor to maintain the highest feed rate without overload. If the load on the drum motor increases, the SandSmart control will decrease the conveyor feed rate and will stop the conveyor under extreme conditions.
If the load on the drum decreases, SandSmart will increase it faster than the manual setting on the speed adjustment label. This feature works in conjunction with a red indicator light that goes on when the SandSmart control has detected too great a depth of cut and/or too fast a speed rate.
High Capacity for Improved ProductivityThe 22X44 Plus flawlessly sands pieces of stock with a 44-inch width in just two passes, whether you're at the maximum workpiece thickness of four inches or the thinnest, which is 1/32 inch. For added convenience, operation is smooth, quiet, and vibration-free.
"Trackers" and Self-Cooling Drum for Consistent PerformanceJet's patented conveyor belt "trackers" dramatically reduce the need for manual belt adjustments, while the precision-machined, balanced, extruded aluminum drum self-cools to protect the surface being sanded from heat damage.
Sealed Drum Ball Bearings and Reinforced Steel Conveyor Belt for DurabilityBoasting quality construction and materials from top to bottom, the 22X44 Plus is built to last. Sealed and permanently lubricated drum ball bearings ensure longer life, while the precision-flattened, reinforced steel conveyor belt and no-give power feed belt provide a flat, durable sanding surface for better results, job after job.
Cast-Iron Handwheel and Adjustable Drum Height for PrecisionTo ensure precision, the cast-iron handwheel adjusts height at 1/16 inch per turn for sanding thickness control and precise stock removal, and the drum height and downward pressure are both adjustable to virtually eliminate snipe. And to prevent slippage, zinc-plated steel tension rollers mount right next to the drum.
Continuous-Duty Motor for Heavy Use Over Longer PeriodsEquipped with a continuous-duty, 1-3/4 HP motor, the 22X44 Plus is specially designed for heavier use over longer periods of time. This one-feed/one-drive motor model also allows for superior sanding control with a wide range of different wood types.
Operator-Friendly Design Improves ProductivityMade to be operator-friendly, the 22X44 Plus boasts patented abrasive take-up fasteners for quick and easy changes. The on/off switch has overload protection and is front-mounted for accessibility and to help prevent accidental start-ups.
The 22X44 Plus requires minimal assembly, weighs 345 pounds, and is backed by a five-year warranty.

Kalamazoo 1SM 1x42" 1/3hp 1ph Kalamazoo Belt Sander Review

After having 2 chinese belt sanders give up the ghost, I finally bought one of these (from another vendor). I wish I had bought this first. The quality of this sander is dramatically better than those other sanders.
This sander is as basic as it can get. It is solid and should last for years and years. You have to mount it to something to use it. It comes fully assembled.
The Baldor motor is American made, and is fully sealed against the abrasive dust thrown off by the belt. It is fan cooled, and is plenty powerful enough for my needs.
You can change a belt in about 15 seconds including getting the belt to track where you want it. My sander has a cover for the top pulley that is not shown in the picture. The cover flips up so you can change the belt.
The belt tension is provided by a spring in the column that holds up the top pulley. Tension is not adjustable.
I use the belt sander for sharpening. It would be nicer if the belt went the other way so I can sharpen the knives edge up and rest my hands on the tool rest. Having said that, when I sharpen lawnmower blades and other big items it is nice that the sparks go downwards. I'll probably build my own tool rest since holding the angle is critical for maximum sharpness. I haven't used the provided tool rest. It is adjustable with a wrench. I don't imagine that it would be convenient to adjust frequently.
You can see video on sharpening at kosterknives.com under 'how to sharpen a convex microbevel'. It isn't as easy as it looks, but after some practice you should end up with really sharp tools. Our pruning shears, scissors, axe, kitchen knives, etc are all much easier to use now. I got my sanding belts (down to 9 micron) from leevalley.com. It looks like trugrit.com might be cheaper though.
'The Complete Guide to Sharpening' by Leonard Lee recommends using a belt sander for sharpening chisels and knives and such. The book 'Sharpening' by Nick Engler shows a chisel sharpening jig setup - but you would have to reverse the direction the belt travels.

This is what a disc sander ought to be (Of course at twice the cost of the comeptition it BETTER be) I looked
at Harbor Freight, Grizzly, Delta, and Shop Fox before finally
deciding on this one. It costs a bundle, but is smoooooooth,
well constructed (weighs over 100lbs) and built to tight
enough tolerances that you actually are cutting what you intend
to cut. It is a pleasure to use. This machine is for the
semi pro to professional shop user. If you want a sander that
just grinds wood or metal, then go buy the Harbor Freight, or Grizzly, they cost over a hundred bucks less. However if you want a machine that just sits there and hummmmmms, and quickly sands exactly where you apply the material then get the Jet.. It will outlast 3 of the "generic" Chinese sanders (Jet is also made in China, but in one of the most modern, well equiped factories in all of Asia)
My only quibbles are minor. One of the sanding plate adjustment
knobs was broken when I got it, it will be replaced.
Also the sanding disc that comes with the unit WILL ABSOLUTLY
NOT stick to the sanding plate. I tried using a heat gun, I
tried pushing, I tried saying very very bad words, nothing.
Fortunatly I had some good old Harbor Freight sanding discs
on hand....That is it in a nutshell. If you want the best
buy the Jet, if you dont want to spend the bucks, and will settle for a lesser machine then Harbor Freight, Grizzly, Delta,
and Shop Fox are out there waiting for you...
