(More customer reviews)I've used it several times now and I'm very satisfied with the mower.
Rear Wheel Drive: Works well with the pressure assist handle. The harder you're pushing the faster the wheels turn. It helps on the big hills.
Clean Out Feature: Attach the hose and let the blades clean out the under carriage. Works very well and helps motivate you to keep the mower clean.
Mulching: Works great. I slow down through the tall grass and it doesn't leave any piles behind. I plan to use mulch almost exclusively.
Engine: Started up when I wasn't even pulling hard. I was just working the oil into the engine and it kicked off...very easy start. I used it in very deep grass the other day and it had plenty of power to chop through the worst of it.
Side chute: Attached it the other day going through a large section of very wet/muddy, very tall grass. Probably should have weed whacked it but I don't have one yet so I mowed. It was a mess. The wheels were spinning and I was sliding all over the place but the mower never faltered and plowed through a very messy job. The clean out feature worked very well that day.
We had just moved into a house that was vacant for a year. Our lawn has not been cared for and the first few mows have been brutal. Even walking the yard a bunch of times I could not get all the debris and limbs out but the Toro blew through them like it was nothing. I've been very impressed with this mower so far.
I take care of my tools and will clean and winter prep it properly not to mention getting the blades sharpened each year. I plan to have this mower for many, many years.

Toro Recycler (22") 190cc Personal Pace Electric Start Lawn Mower - 20334 Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this lawn mower today. I have 1/3 acre lawn. There are a couple of very slight inclines and I had to essentially push hard on the "personal pace" bar to get it to go up the incline. The only way the mower would take over is to hold onto the handle bar with one hand, while pushing down the pace bar with the other hand. I didn't think this mower would require that much effort. I also have a Sears mower that, when working properly, just takes off, but you can adjust the speed very nicely. It will take you up the hill with no effort whatsover (however the wheels get stripped and it becomes a push mower every summer). I AM SO DISAPPOINTED in this Toro mower. If I could, I would return it immediately. Cost from a Toro dealer was $399. The only plus I see is that it does a nice job of cutting the grass.

(More customer reviews)after much research, I settled on the 5521 CHV. It was purchased in July of '08. ran well all summer, winterized it and It fired up on the second pull this spring. I have 8300 sq. ft. of lawn (.3-.4 acres i think) and it takes me about 1 hour. The machine handles thick grass without a problem, bags well. The grass bag easily empties, no shaking needed. The engine never boggs down. I push it mostly. My wife demanded a self propelled and she's used it for a total of 15 minutes. When I've played with the self propelled feature, it works fine. minimal squeeze preassure on the lever, tighter pull equals faster speed. My lawn is moderately hilly and it's not a problem for the propulsion.I'm very happy with the purchase at almost 1 year of ownership. The honda engine should last forever.

(More customer reviews)If not, like those of us who have full-time jobs, and you'd actually like to take more than 1 inch off of your lawn each time you mow, you should buy a different mower.
I have owned this mower for only a month and it does indeed cut the lawn, but it does not recycle, nor does it bag.
The "recycler" simply slaps gobs of finely ground/pureed grass onto the walls of the deck until the blade becomes off-balance and begins to grind excessively until the engine starts bogging down. Of course this is terrible for the longevity of engine life. I have had to kill the mower after only 2-3 rows, 25ft long, to let the majority of the mulched/pureed grass drop out of the deck. Then begin again.
The "bagger" does basically the same thing, once the grass is mush, the mower tries to shoot it into the bag through a tiny hole which then gets clogged due to the extreme amounts of moisture and lack of space to actually push the grass to the back of the bag. Yes, I waited for a week of dry, hot summer sun, and still the same result. Plants retain moisture.
I am no nubie to mowing lawns either, I worked for a lawn care company for several years, we used Toro products, I like them, correction, I LIKED them (in regards to this product anyway). But I was let-down after purchasing this model. I am also a motorcycle mechanic so I know what is bad for engines.
If this mower had a side discharge it MAY have been a decent product, but who knows. The manual even claims to have a rear discharge chute/deflector, however the dealer had no clue about it and couldn't even find it in their database.
I'll let you know if that changes anything if they ever find it for me to test out.

Used rear bagger and mower cut tall and fairly wet grass without a problem, manual states to mow only in dry conditions but that is near impossible in the northwest; runs a lot quieter than my 21 year old Ariens; pace system works very well.
Cons: Fold down handle requires manually loosening hand knobs - not quick release which is a pain for those of us that do it after each mowing; adhesive-backed covering over battery compartment cover gets covered with grass and wet during cleaning, will not be long before it is loose enough to let grass and moisture in, needs better sealing method for the long haul, battery compartment needs to be relocated where it does not get covered with dust, grass and moisture; bag is difficult to clean after mowing as there are lots of folds and seams that grass gets stuck in and won't wash out with a hose; wash out port should have a cover when not in use; have to lower mower to lowest position each time you clean it then go back to position you mow in - what a pain, looked under mower after washing out and there still was some grass left behind which will build up over time.

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased this mower. I was a bit skeptical as I truly wanted a Snapper, but I decided to save a few bucks and get this instead. I wanted a light weight, yet strong, and durable mower, that could easily pull the very steep hill in my yard. This mower is a little power house, and slices through my lawn like a sharp scissor through paper. I don't know how well it would do with tall thick fesque, but for my Bermudagrass it is absolutely perfect. It pulls the hill very well, mulches my clippings superbly. No need to make a second run. And the engine cranks on the first pull, each time, no problem, with very VERY little effort. An elderly person could start this mower. I love it!!!

(More customer reviews)This is my first self-propelled mower. I'm coming from a basic, no-frills machine that I bought some years ago when I just wanted something cheap that would do the job.
I bought this mower at the local Depot, cheaper than the advertised price here even after tax was added. I brought it home and unpacked it. Setup was done in just a couple of minutes -- unlike my previous mower, this one is almost entirely assembled in the box. All you need to do is put the handle on and attach the blade clutch lever to it. No tools required.
Next, add the fluids. The mower comes with the right amount of 30-weight oil. Then fill up the gas tank, and you're off.
The mower has an engine kill switch like you'd find on a motorcycle. Switch to "I" (Ignition). Pull the starter cord. Mine fired up on the first pull! The engine runs smoothly (and much quieter than my old mower). You don't need to have the safety bar pulled in at this point -- the engine will run, but the blades will not spin.
Pull the safety bar in and the blades start spinning. Release it and they stop, but the engine keeps running. Kill the engine by flipping the ignition switch to OFF.
That's cool. With my old mower, every time I let go of the safety bar it killed the engine and I would have to pull the starter cord again to get it going.
The propulsion is really nice. The upper section of the grip is spring-loaded and slides up and down the vertical handlebar rods slightly. The more pressure you apply to the handlebar, the faster the mower will want to move. Release the bar, and the mower stops moving. There is another, secondary handlebar underneath that can be used to circumvent the propulsion entirely, if desired.
There is also a large lever that allows you to change between mulching and bagging. This can be done at any time. With the bag attached, pulling the lever to the rear will start bagging, while pushing the lever forward will close off the opening to the bag and start mulching instead. The mower also comes with the side discharge attachment, which installs easily and is very effective.
When you're done mowing, there is a port on the side that accepts a standard garden hose. Attach a hose to the mower and turn it on. Then start the mower and start the blades spinning. It does a really good job of cleaning out the mower for you. When the water coming out starts to run clear, just shut off the hose and let the blades keep spinning for another few seconds until the mower is dry. You will still need to clean out some of it, though, like the bag port, which the hose doesn't reach.
The Briggs & Stratton engine seems strong, easily handling whatever horrible things I threw at it (with a caveat, explained below). Propulsion was also strong, and even going up a steep incline behind my house required only about 5% of the effort required with my previous mower. The overall build quality is excellent, and it's a real looker to boot.
There are a couple of minor quibbles, but nothing significant enough to merit the loss of a star. I'm not a huge fan of the white wheels, which were already turning green after the first mow. And the wheels themselves don't turn as freely as those on my old mower. Presumably this is because of the propulsion mechanism, so I guess that could be the case with any self-propelled mower. And finally, when in mulching mode, the mower seems to stall more frequently than my old mower when it hits the hard stuff. I live in Florida, and it rains a lot in the summer. Sun + lots of water = grass that's sometimes a foot high in a week. So if the grass gets too long in between mows, this mower will sometimes stall because there's way too much material to mash around. However, switching to side discharge or bagging solves the problem immediately, and the mower will cut ANYTHING.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this mower from a different retailer. It failed after 3 months of residential use on our lawn. The retailer wouldn't/couldn't honor the warranty because the unit contains gasoline. Briggs & Statton wouldn't do anything for me after taking it to an authorized warranty repair shop ($45 min. charge). They said the blade must have struck something and bent the crankshaft. My daughters mow the lawn and haven't fessed up to hitting something, the blade was slightly bent with a few pencil lead size dings. Poulan customer service provided no help via their on-line customer service process. All in all a disappointing purchase. My previous lawn mower lasted 13 years and survived several bent and replaced blades. The engine on this unit does not seem to be suitable for the intended use.

TORO Personal Pace Walk P Review

(More customer reviews)The quality of cut is below what I've come to expect from my commercial mower - but hey, this only cost 1/25th of what it did. After a month of owning it and running it near 60 hours, it seems reliable. Starts 75% of the time on the first pull and always by the second. The drive belt chatters some if the grass is juicy and collects on the belt. It does a near flawless job in Tall Fescue, but leaves stragglers and obvious wheel tracks in Kentucky Blue Grass. The bagging system seems to work well. I mainly use it in mulching mode - or, if the grass is tall, discharge mode. It cuts best with the front of the deck set to your intended cutting height and the rear set higher by one notch. And, speaking of tall grass, it does a pretty good job cutting tall grass (6-8") at the highest wheel setting (4" on this mower) compared to other 22" mowers I've had. I tried switching the blade to the Gator #96-607 blade, which doesn't really improve the quality of cut, but it does seem to last longer before it needs sharpening. The Gator also seems to have a slight advantage in clipping dispersal when in discharge mode. The cleaning port does ok to rinse out the bulk of what collects under the deck - but if you wait long after you finish cutting and the grass dries under the deck, all bets are off. Taller clippings collect around the blade shroud and must be removed manually from time to time. Granted, I'm picky - and to get a better cutting 22" mower will likely cost twice as much. All in all, not too bad.

I tracked down the manufacturer and they sent me new ones in a week or so. And the pull start works without keys so I was able to mow. It was pretty easy to assemble but it sure weighs a lot. I have never had a power drive mower before so maybe they are all heavy. It doesnt always start on the first few tries but will after 4-5 pulls usually. It cuts very well and the bagger fits on nicely.

(More customer reviews)I got this reconditioned from Sears about 2 weeks ago for $250. Since it was used, it did not come with a bagger or side discharge chute, but I only mulch, so that was no problem. I read all the good and bad reviews on this mower and wanted to try it anyway because it had larger wheels on the back and it was Snapper.
The good:
I really like not having to prime the motor to start it. A simple pull and it will start on the first pull every time (I only had this mower for 2 weeks so I don't know the longevity of this engine).
I am about 6' tall so the adjustable handle is really nice so I am not stooped over like i am on most mowers.
The bad:
Self propelled works the best on concrete. Plush St. Augustine grass really slows it down, hard flat ground it works pretty well on, and sand is a joke/would not recommend. Some one may have mentioned that it pulls itself uphill, but about a 10% incline in sandy bahia grass mix, I had to help it.
The large wheels in the back were ok, but I think 14" wheels would be better for transport. Speaking of which, as big as those wheels were on the back, there was no support/bracing between the back wheels. So when I would get to the end of a row and pivot on a rear wheel to turn around, the thin metal attaching the wheels to the frame would flex. I felt like I had to baby the mower so I wouldn't break anything.
This thing goes through gas pretty quickly. I do not think its because the motor burns a lot of fuel, but the tank is really small for whatever reason.
The plastic mulch door does not really fit around the metal well, so while I am mowing sand/grass is constantly blowing on the deck. Where the sand blows on to the deck from the mulch door, is where the air filter sucks in clean air!!! I think I had about 10 pounds extra on the deck from this.
Lastly, while mowing over some small sticks, the mower decided it wasn't going to mulch them and spit them out the rear bagger door hitting me in the shins. I noticed this was a really poor design as well as the mulch door on the side which does the same thing. This is not a real Snapper. (It's not even Snapper red, it is an orange/red color). If you plan on keeping a mower for any real amount of time, like 5+ years, save your money and get a small 21" commercial mower.

(More customer reviews)First off let me say that i've never wrote a review before. I usually have luck with items and usually buy items based upon other reviews. This time I wasn't so lucky. I bought this item last year (June 2008). It ran fine for the summer/fall. I did everything I was supposed to do to winterize it (drain gas, oil, clean old grass clippings, clean air filter, unplug spark plug, etc...). Come April 2009, I add oil, gas, etc.. and the thing just wouldn't start. I tried everything but couldn't even get a spark from the engine. I called Poulan Pro but was never able to speak to a live person. I finally just brought it into an "authorized" poulan pro service shop, which I located on [...]. A few weeks later, they called me and told me my mower was ready and that there is a $143 charge and it's not covered under warranty. They said it was dirty inside and that they had to take apart the whole carburetor to clean it. From regular use, the whole carburetor got dirty and this caused it to stop working?? Now it is May 2009, the mower is running but who knows for how long. I will never buy another Poulan Pro product again.
In short, do not buy this. My last mower was a Toro and lasted me 8 years and I wish I had bought another. Go get a name brand mower like Toro or John Deere and you will be better off.

Well, I could not be more pleased! At first turn of the key it started and I was off! It ran smooth and pretty quiet!
I did not use the bag and it mulched the leaves into little pieces! It works really well! I am very happy!Update...Here it is April 2010 and I uncovered the mower, put some fresh gasoline in it and turned the key......It cranked right away! I thought that I might have to baby it since it had not been used in several months!! No such thing!! I am so glad that I bought this and you will be also!

without any tools. filled crankcase with 20 oz. of included oil and put in some gas and it fired up on first pull. no choke or priming bulb nothing. just pull and it starts. awesome briggs motor. double horsepower of my old craftsman and half the sound. the exhaust pipe actually muffles sound. not like those tuna fish cans on the side of most motors. mower is very light and easily manuverable. just what i wanted. something simple.so it has a few holes on the deck used on the more expensive mower. BIG DEAL! it just means to me i got the same quality steel deck the better model gets.doesn't have any bells and whistles i don't need and without $500 price tag. cut so cleanly and evenly. sucked up all clippings. like a vacuum for my lawn. even some twigs i thought were just going flung off to the side were sucked up and munched into the bag. the chubby wheels floated over grass and i was done in a snap. wished i had more lawn.the clipping bag comes off easily and empties without making a mess. plus its a cool kawasaki ninja green! so happy i didn't spend so much more on the flashy honda. it just looks and feels like quality. highly recommended to my jealous neighbor. to you too
