(More customer reviews)I have owned my 708 for 18 months now and am as happy with it now as when I bought it. The slide rails are very smooth and easy to adjust(needed depending on temperature extremes). The lever cam lock beats those twist knobs hands down. The miter detents are positive but not so deep as to make it difficult to go 1/4 of a degree to either side. The vernier scale on the miter pointer is handy. The depth stop is a useful item for certain uses, except for dados, where you have to keep the work 2-21/2" off the fence to get a flat cut. The tall fence is sturdy and is better than adding wood to the wimpy stock fence (a la Makita, Hitachi). The dual bevel feature is real nice, since now I don't have to move the zero stop to bevel right a degree or two. One improvement would be an overide for the bevel stops so you could bevel 47 degrees without messing with the adjustment. I just leave the stops turned out and go to the pointer for a true 45. The cutting capacity is plain heaven, especially for jig cutting railing parts(not even possible with a straight 12" or slide 10"). All told, the best saw on the market, even if it cost twice as much.

Makita LS1013FL 15 Amp 10-Inch Dual Bevel Compound Sliding Miter Saw with Laser and Fluorescent Light Review

(More customer reviews)I needed a saw when my old DeWalt 708 slider was in the shop for bearing replacement. I considered buying another DeWalt but the new model is not as nice as the old 708. I have the opportunity to use all of the comparable high end saws that my co-workers use. I did not choose the Hitachi because the dinky table makes it difficult to cut wide stock accurately. The laser on the Hitachi does not shine on the leading edge of the piece either.
The Makita laser is better because it will shine on the front edge of the piece. That makes it nice when cutting bevels. Recently I was cutting beveled siding and I needed the piece to be cut with the finish side down so the exposed cut would be square. I needed to mark the bottom of the leading edge. When using the Hitachi, the laser was not shining on the edge so I had to line the cut the old way by bending over and sighting down the blade.
The laser on the Makita will not move far enough over to line exactly on the mark. It needs to move another 32nd of an inch to line up. I may be able to fix that with a file when I have time. You can easily move the laser to either side of the cut.
The saw was easy to calibrate. It did not need much. The 0 degree bevel was perfect out of the box. The 45 degree right and left just needed to be tuned a hair.
The blade that comes with the saw makes very smooth cuts. There is no need to buy a Forrest blade like I had to with my DeWalt. I miss the high fence that comes on the Dewalt. The Makita only has a high fence on one side. You can buy a high fence for the right side.
The guard works nicely and you can see through it by means of a slot. No more bending over to see the blade on the mark. The Hitachi does not have a slot so you have to bend down to see the blade on the mark after the guard is old and opaque. Because of this there are some carpenters who remove the guard and that is not good.
The dust collection on the Makita is very good. The bag fills up frequently. The dust collection on my DeWalt is non existent. I would prefer a zipper on the dust bag instead of the slotted tube.
The table on the Makita is one of the nicer tables out there. It is very wide and stable. It swings smoothly and locks with a quick twist. The saw bevel release has been improved from the earlier Makitas. You no longer have to bump the saw hard to move it out of the 0 degree detent.
The soft start prevents the saw from jumping when it starts up. I always wait a moment with any saw before plunging the blade.
The little light, although not very bright is a nice feature when working inside.
This saw is much lighter than my DeWalt 708.
I have had this saw for about two months now and so far it is a pleasure to use. No complaints. Five Stars

Freud TR215 8-1/2-Inch Sliding Compound Miter saw Review

(More customer reviews)I've used this saw for several months. I purchased it after my sometime building partner was called out of state, taking his superb (and costly) Milwaukee slide-compound saw with him. In all honesty, I bought the Freud elsewhere for less money than advertised here.
You probably will not like this saw if you are a fanatic for fine fit and finish. It's not as aesthetically pleasing as some of it's higher priced competition. The blade guard is cheesy, and the saw doesn't scream quality overall. It's obviously a price-point item. The exception to this is the blade, which is all one expects from Freud.
However, it is a good, functional tool. The cast-aluminum table is top-notch. The miter indexing is good, although the bevel indexing is only fair. I've cut materials ranging from 2-by pt and rough-cut to 5/4 to moulding, and always found the power sufficient. The only mechanical flaw I've found is the electric brake failing to function in extremely cold and damp weather. This is not unique, however, as a I worked with a friend's DeWalt under the same conditions and experienced a similar problem.
If you're looking for an heirloom quality tool, this probably isn't it. If you want something that does a surprisingly good job in rough-and tumble jobsite conditions, or for other reasons cannot justify spending additional money it's worth a long look. For the difference between the Freud and it's competition, I purchased a decent workstand, which truly increases production, safety and ease of use.

Ridgid MS1290LZA Saw, 12-Inch Compound Sliding Miter with Laser Review

(More customer reviews)I do several jobs from framing to trimming and everything in between. I bought this saw from home depot for $549.00 and got a free Ridgid miter stand a ($179 value). I have used many other brands of saws, Makita is ranked comparible to the ridgid. I would recommend this saw if it is mainly used in a stationary spot where you don't mind getting saw dust everywhere. The thing ways a ton and when on the stand it barely fits through a 32" doorway. The dust bag is useless unless you use a vacuum. Going to rig a switch to my vacuum that turns on when my saw does that way I can do finish work without making a big mess. Other than that it cuts good and straight, degree marks are easy to read, and very comfortable to use.

Rarely do you see tools increase in value. Yes okay, maybe a little inflation to factor in, but my gosh, the way things are in the building industry, you would think Bosch would have a clue a give us contractors a break!! I was pondering getting another one since the one I have gets pulled in and out of my truck and used about 300 days a year. It's had it's day and parts are now a need, but the expense for the parts may be worth it now, with the way they have this saw priced today. My gosh!!
But overall, the saw is a beast and is worth every penny! And trust me....70lbs in and out takes toll..lol.

(More customer reviews)This is a physically large and heavy saw. I bought it and the Hitachi miter stand to take to jobs sits to do cabnet grade trim work and I'm afraid I over bought. (I'm gonna end up with a hernia or a broken back). The lazer, while accurate, needs to be adjusted with every change of saw position. Plus, my lazer runs out of adjustment to the left side of the blade but has plenty to the right (there may be another adjustment but nothing in the manual). My biggest disapointment is the digital display. It only reads to .5 degree, but you can move the table between the marks and the saw stays at .5 (I can eye ball a half degree as this saw has a excellent miter scale (And a fair bevel scale). I think this feature (and the reason I bought the saw) to be over rated. I've also noticed a somewhat gritty slide action (may need a cleaning)..That being said I have found this saw to be accurate and powerfull. The soft start is a nice feature, but it takes some getting used to as you have to wait for the saw to get up to speed before contacting to wood.

Makita 195083-4 Job Site Miter Saw Stand Review

(More customer reviews)I, like another reviewer, had severe packaging issues with this miter saw stand. The cardboard box looked like it had been dragged behind the delivery truck instead of inside it. The bag holding the bolts was ripped open, and bolts and washers were scattered around on the inside of the box. One bolt was missing, but fortunately I had a compatible bolt already lying around the garage.
(And here is where I have a real bone to pick with Makita. The directions said to immediately call if there were any parts missing, but of course they didn't bother to print a phone number! When I went to Makita's web site, the only numbers I could find were for local Makita dealers/repair shops. So I am supposed to call a local shop, from whom I didn't purchase the stand, and ask them to help me? That just feels wrong...)
The directions were literally ripped to shreds, making them very hard to read. Not that they helped that much anyway; what part I could read was written in "minglish" and the pictures and diagrams were inadequate, in my opinion. Fortunately, assembly was not difficult and only took about 30 minutes from start to finish. I did have to make adjustments to one of the wheels before it would assemble properly; the bolt hole didn't match up. The wheels are indeed quite large, making it easy to maneuver the stand over rough terrain, but it is also very heavy. I'm a little disappointed that a table this large and heavy (160 LBs) is only rated to hold 250 LBs. I do like the table, but overall I would have to say I am disappointed with this purchase, considering the price I paid.

Hitachi C8FSE 8-1/2-Inch Sliding Compound Miter Saw Review

(More customer reviews)I'll break it down simply put, the good and the bad. I was not sure if this saw would replace the older version and be as well built. It's not the same quality as the older one. Hitachi designers did a good job making this saw very light weight, but sacrificed some of the quality with plastic and a thin casted table. The saw was dead on with the cross cut set at 0 degrees. Miters came out fair when cutting large crown but were off by maybe a 1/32"-1/16" every time. Here is what I found out. I took a framing square and checked the relationship between the left and right fence. That was on the money. I then checked the table and realized that the miter center table sat below the left and right outside support tables a whole 1/16th. There is no adjustability to raise or lower the miter table and that's why my cuts are off slightly. That combined with the play of the head and rails having some slop and being able to freely clunk the head to the right and left a 16th. The best way I can describe it is it feels like the head doesn't ride on the right rail snuggly, and by the time you tighten the slide action so you don't have any play its very stiff to slide. Also the blade guard stays low when you bring the head down and doesn't allow you to start your cut with a back stroke and then to finish your cut with the forward stroke with ease. The kerf insert is also another big 1/32 below the already low miter table. That's 3/32nds out of level. The good is that it is very light, portable, decently accurate and it has a rebate as of right now for a Hitachi 2 1/4hp router. I work in very high end homes working with prefinished huge crown molding and paneling, etc and need the accuracy to be within a 1/32th. If you don't need this kind of precision then this saw is a decent unit. If the table wasn't out of level with the base I would have worked it out. But because you can't adjust this problem I am sending it back. It's also kind of cheesy to be blunt. As an alternative I bought the Hitachi 10" slider which is a Japanese made unit and is proven to be accurate from my experience. Hope this review helps some finish carpenters out there

(More customer reviews)After quite a bit of time working with this saw professionally, I have found it to be the most accurate, durable, fast to use, and easy to carry of the multitude I've come in contact with on the job site.
Accuracy:
The saw was accurate out of the box and has an easy system to adjust if it comes slightly off a perfect 90º. I tested the accuracy by cutting an octagon out of some scrap wood, and found the last miter to meet very well, which is rare in a sliding saw.

I've only adjusted the saw once, after a big fall off a deck when another carpenter caught it with a 12-foot board. After the 9 foot fall, I didn't have the time to test the saw and make sure it was square, so I trued it instead. Other than a small crack in the handle, the saw came through the fall without any damage, and the crack doesn't affect the function at all.
Speed:
The upfront controls make tilting the powerhead a breeze! It's made trim jobs such as tall baseboard and crown molding go much faster and easier.
Portability:
That Bosch's engineers actually used this saw is apparent from the moment you pick it up. Best two (!) handles in the industry!
Cons:
Factory blade- be prepared to replace this sooner than a Makita, but at roughly the same time as a Dewalt, Ridgid, or Milwaukee. We've replaced the blade with Freuds, which we've found quite satisfactory.
Weight/Size: Make no mistake, this is a big saw. Portable, but be prepared for it to take up some room at the job site and on your truck. We keep ours on a TB4 stand- best stand we've used!

(More customer reviews)First, I purchased this saw as a woodworking tool, rather than a carpentry or jobsite tool, so keep that in mind.
This is a big saw. I intend to mount it permanently in my shop, so that is not an issue. But if you need mobility, the weight and girth would be problematic. That is the only negative thing I have to say at this point about this saw.
Cut Quality:
This saw cut through red oak 2 1/2 inches thick and 9 inches wide literally like butter, leaving a cut so smooth I was shocked (it was superior to my contractors saw with a Forrest WWII blade). Thus, the saw is more than adequately powered and has an excellent blade. Consider that if you balk at the price tag - you do not need to go out and replace the blade. Also, because the saw has adjustable kerf inserts, tearout is minimal (usually none at all). The kerf inserts are well designed and will not damage the saw if you cut one at an extreme bevel angle. Though not as good as a shop made zero clearance insert, it is effective enough that I am not going to spend time making one. The bottom line - perfect cuts that you make you smile as you run your fingers over the end grain.
Construction and Use:
Slider and Hold down: The slider action is extremely smooth. You can get through boards almost 13 inches in width effortlessly. The saw is extremely safe while doing this due to the excellent (and sturdy) blade guard and the very effective hold down clamp. The fence and hold down are sturdy enough that you need not touch the piece or have hands anywhere near the blade.
Adjustments: All controls are way out front - you never have to reach behind the saw! All adjustments are easy to make and I found the saw to be pretty much dead accurate. I like the microadjust feature, which I have never seen before on a miter saw. However, I must admit that I'm just too used to "knocking" the saw into place for miter cuts to actually ever use the microadjust.
Fit & Finish: This saw is heavy for a reason - it is solid. There is no cheapness about this saw. Also, it looks good. In all honesty, it makes all other tools in my shop look bad.
Other tidbits include an easy to use depth stop for cutting grooves, pullout extension slides for the table, and a 3 way adjustable handle for comfort on all cuts. I just don't see how a miter saw can get any better than this. It is a joy to use and makes my shop play time even more fun. Beats the heck out of pushing a six foot piece of oak over my table saw blade at a 45 any day!

I bought the 4410l to do a house full of baseboard and some crown moulding and am very pleased with the performance of this saw. Right out of the box, which arrived in only 4 days,the saw produced machinist square cuts and absolutely "light tight" crown cuts. ALL angles came dead accurate from the factory. The laser is just a wow factor and the dust collection isn't the greatest but the cuts this slider makes are a thing of beauty and ease,even with the supplied blade. I honestly don't understand the negative reviews about accuracy with this unit. I have the 10" Bosch contractors saw and its performance was what led me to this sliding mitre saw, Bosch was up to the task again. Fit,finish,upfront controls,the micro fine adjustment was wonerful on the crown cuts,...all great. This is good saw and I recommend it highly.

(More customer reviews)I've had this for about 6 months and it's never let me down. It takes a little getting used to if you've never used a sliding miter saw before, as the technique is somewhere between a radial arm saw and a normal fixed miter saw. As a couple of other reviewers pointed out, you have to make sure you slide the saw all the way home or you'll leave a little bit uncut.
One thing I've found is when I'm cutting narrow planks (4" or 6") I've gotten into the habit of pulling the blade toward me past the front edge of the piece, dropping it down, and then sliding it back through the piece - instead of just plunging the blade straight in, as you'd do with a fixed chop saw. This seems to significantly reduce bottom tearout.
It's undeniably a very pleasant tool to use; if you've only used saws that have a vertical handle you won't believe the difference the horizontal handle makes. The switch is well designed, it's not easy to trigger by accident but not fatiguing to hold. The action of the slides is smooth as silk, and setting the miter angles is quick, easy, and very positive. The motor has plenty of power for any kind of wood I've ever sent its way.
The 8 1/2 inch size has some advantages - the blade seems to be more stable, even without a stabilizer, than most 10" blades. Also in my experience 8 1/2" blades are a little cheaper than the equivalent 10" blade. But, it won't cut a 4x4 (or a 2x4 on edge) in one pass - a 10 incher will. Whether or not that matters depends on the kind of work you do.
You'll want to replace the blade that the saw comes with, it's fine for chopping up 2x4s (but if that's all you want to do you don't need this saw) but not good enough for finish work. There aren't a million blades available for this size of saw, but there's a decent selection - although not all the catalogs carry them. My favorite is a 60 tooth DeWalt finish blade that you can find most anywhere for about 50 bucks and does great work for me in all types of hardwood. Freud makes one that's pretty good as well. Forrest makes one of their chopmaster blades in this size, I'm sure it's great but it's $100+ and since I'm happy with my current blade I've never tried it.
Overall fit and finish is very nice - as you generally expect from contemporary Italian manufacture. After taking it out of the box, I went over it completely with my machinist square and couldn't find anything out of alignment. The only quality complaint I have is the crummy screws holding the blade guard on - blade changing is not exactly a snap with this saw and they really don't help.
There's no clamp included, unlike some other manufacturers - since I prefer to keep all 10 of my fingers I bought one - but they soak you on this item - $35!! Actually I bought two but you only need one - you hardly ever use both at once and it takes a second or two to swap it from one side of the saw to the other. Also, while it holds well, it's a screw type and I would prefer some type of cam action - I think that would be faster and easier to use.
But overall if you want a really sweet, pleasant to use saw and you don't normally need to cut large timber, I'd recommend this saw - I'm certainly very happy with it.

(More customer reviews)After waiting for years to buy this saw because of all the great reviews I bought the one with the laser. I build furniture and thought this would be the end all of miter saws. First off, the fence was out of adjustment and took some doing to line up. After less than 3 months of limited usage, the electric brake quit braking! I took it to an authorized repair facility, they ordered a switch which came in defective. Then they ordered another switch, armature, and two other items and I got the saw back after about 4 weeks. Less than 10 hours of use and once again, no brake -- it just coasts down forever which really makes it totally inefficient. I'd just as soon use my table saw. I contacted Hitachi once again wanting them to send my a replacement but it won't work that way. I need to take it to another authorized repair place and have them go through whatever the proper channels are to replace this saw. Maybe since it's "new & improved" I should have gotten the older, proven one or maybe because it's made in a different factory. Whatever the case, I'm very disappointed with this saw up to now. Purchased the end of October and barely any use.
