Grizzly G0441 3 HP Cyclone Dust Collector Review

Grizzly G0441 3 HP Cyclone Dust Collector

I placed an order for this unit direct from Grizzly. They included a free gift in the order . I chose a set of 115 titanium bits. The bit set arrived first. The metal box that contained the bits was low quality with a interfering mechanisms and a catch that didn't line up. Despite the cheesy metal box, I've used the bits several times now and they work well.
This made me concerned about the dust collector. My fears were warranted - the box showed up and was beat up. It had some minor crushing and a couple of tears and one good sized hole. The pallet onto which it was stapled had one of the bottom members torn off leaving bare nails sticking out.
The box had an extra piece of cardboard taped to the top which appears to be because the box was so beat up that it needed augmentation. The box looked like it had be opened and taped shut several times. Notice this: Grizzly shipped a 425 lb shipment in a cardboard box stapled to a pallet and it is not bolted down. I'm not an expert in this area, but other manufacturers have sent me such large items crated, bolted down, and with steel bands holding everything in place.
Most troubling, was that inside, the collector parts were haphazardly placed in a somewhat random fashion with pieces of cardboard taped to parts to try and prevent them from damaging one another during shipping.
It didn't work, there was a substantial gouge in the side of the blower housing that was created by a nearby bolt.
Aside from all this packaging/shipping/customer service nonsense, I was impressed with how the unit appeared to be designed. The gauge of the steel was heavy, the welds look good, and the manual is excellent. The finish on the replacement intake barrel was good. The finish on the original was fair to poor (rough surface where air would be flowing).Update: after all the hassle of replacing the intake barrel I got the machine assembled and running.
I measured the noise level with my meter (keep in mind I have a small shop of about 20x12). It's reading about 87 dbA in operation. Before purchasing, Grizzly claimed it was 83 dbA at one meter (I called and asked, this isn't published). I am satisfied with this 87 dbA at 2 meters. I think it's reasonably close to what they had told me.
The collector worked great - for a week. I then started hearing major squeaking from the motor when shutting down the machine that lasts for nearly a minute! After spending more time disassembling the motor w/ technical service on the line to trouble shoot it, we determined the bearings in the motor are bad.
I'm now an official believer in all the hoopla about buying American motors. It is such a huge pain-in-the-($#((*$# to replace a motor of this size, I'll never mess with a second rate import motor again.
I called back about getting the motor replaced and they told me they can't replace the motor w/o escalating this problem to their home office. The reason, again, being that I hadn't noted the exterior chinks in the packaging on the bill of lading at the time of delivery. In essence, it seemed to me they were saying "if you don't note package damage on the exterior of the box at the time of delivery, your warranty is void". This is despite the fact that I did take digital photos to note it's condition before opening the box and sent them to both Grizzly and Fed-Ex freight. Fed-ex sent out an inspector who seemed to agree with me that both Grizzly and Fed-Ex should take responsibility. As first observer, this looked like more of a problem on Grizzly's end than Fed-Ex.
Update: the home office called stating they would pick up the defective motor, repair it, and send me the repaired motor back out. I found this objectionable because of all the previous hassle and additional downtime and asked that they send me a new motor before requiring me to send the old one back. Now waiting for them to get back to me. This motor is 8 feet in the air and probably weighs over 100lbs. It is a major undertaking to disassemble the dust collector and send it to them. I had to hire two additional guys to install it in the first place because I don't have a fork lift.
Update 2: although the motor sounds like it has a the bad bearing and considering that I'm a light user of this tool, it is still operating reliably a few years after purchase.

Porter-Cable 363 12 Amp 4-Inch by 24-Inch Belt Sander Review

Porter-Cable 363 12 Amp 4-Inch by 24-Inch Belt Sander
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had bought the Porter Cable 4" Whisper Series Model 362 about a year ago. It is the same unit as this one, same 12 amp motor etc, but has the dust bag with it, and is variable speed. You can see the 362VS here at Amazon. For the price difference I would buy the 362VS. I had written this review, thinking that this was the model that I had, after looking at the model number on the sander, I realized it was a 362. Consequently I wrote this review first, then copy and pasted the review into the 362VS. So if you see the same review, you know why. For the sake of interest, I am letting this review stand. Here it is:
I previously used a 3x21" Sears. Did the job, but this PC is in a whole different category. Some of the more important features: Positive tracking-when you set the belt adjusting knob, the belt stays adjusted. Some belt sanders creep on you, and require frequent resetting. Annoying to say the least. Also the belt change feature is nice. A simple lever you pull out, then push back in. Quiet-you do not have to wear ear protection to use this. Hearing protection is always a good idea though. It is heavy, but to me this is an advantage. You don't have to push down on the unit, in order to get the job done. To those who mention that you have to keep an eye on the machine, because it can take away too much material too fast, that is because they are using a coarser grit than it required for the task. Finer grades give you more flexibility, and removal is more gradual and even. A belt sander is not designed to replace a finish sander.
With the larger 4" footprint, it is possible to remove a lot of material fast, without digging troughs in the work, which is possible with many belt sanders. Troughs-ridges show in the finished product. For fine finishes that are even and flat, a dedicated planer, then a finish sander, and finally a fine grade of hand sanding will give you the desired result.
The Porter Cable 4" is the best belt sander I have ever used. I would not hesitate to take on a floor refinishing task with this unit. If I was doing it for a living, I would of course persue a walk behind.
This is a no nonsense sander. Heavy duty. Lay it on the board, and hold on. Makes short of a lot of work. Feels like it will last a lifetime. Definitely a leader in the pack, and worth the money.

The Porter-Cable 363 belt Sander features a huge 4 x 24 inch belt, a powerful 12 Amp motor, and an efficient belt-and-gear drive system for accurate power transfer. Remove stock quickly with the 1,500 SFPM belt speed, but don't worry about this sander being too powerful to control--the 360's motor is located over platen to give this sander perfect balance and keep you in control, and the ergonomically-designed handles are comfortable enough for hours of sanding. When it's time to change the belt, the quick-release belt system makes it a cinch, and the fingertip belt-tracking knob gives the user a quick and easy way to adjust the belt tension.

BOSCH RA1181 Benchtop Router Table Review

BOSCH RA1181 Benchtop Router Table
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been contemplating getting around to building a router table for far too long. I've been limping by with my tablesaw router insert. I had gotten a great deal on the Bosch 1617 Plunge/Fixed combo a while back. I thought that this would be a good pair, using the fixed base mounted in the table, with above table adjustment, and the plunge base for handheld use.
The table is cast aluminum and it was as square as I was able to measure. The router mount plate is a strong cast aluminum piece as well. It shouldn't sag from leaving a router mounted as I have seen in some other plates. There are adjustment screws for each corner and each edge (a total of 8). This allows you to mount the plate perfectly flush of the table top. The fence is an extruded aluminum piece with adjustable MDF faces. It was square and true. Also included were two 1/16" plastic sheets to slide behind the MDF for using the table as an edge jointer. This is a nice idea for someone starting out, but I prefer a real jointer.
The power switch is a little odd. You lift a plastic lever to turn on a rocker switch. If you press down on the lever at all, it will shut off the switch. This should work well, but I can see a possibility of breaking the plastic lever. That would not prevent the switch from functioning, it would just be harder to turn off.
The featherboards included will be usable and are pretty well designed. The storage area in one leg is a great idea, but it is impossible to put everything not in use in there. I will most likely mount this on top of a rolling cabinet with some drawers. I could also see eventually keeping the aluminum top and replacing the plastic legs with a cabinet. The top should last for a long while.
Overall, I believe that I will be happy with this purchase. I think it is decent at the regular price and I would consider it a bargain with the total of 30% offers that were applied when I purchased it. I would check the Bosch site and verify that your router will fit this table. There is mention in the instructions about drilling holes for above the table adjustments of some Porter Cable and other routers. However, mounting holes are provided for many routers. If your router isn't listed, you would need to drill accurate holes to mount. If you aren't exactly centered, some operations on the table will be very hard to do (such as routing with a template and bushing.)
Although this Aluminum top doesn't need paste wax for protection, unlike cast iron, it is a good idea. On my BT3100 table saw, the aluminum can leave grey streaks if it is not paste waxed. Just something to think about with this.

Bosch 5312 12-Inch Dual Bevel Slide Compound Miter Saw Review

Bosch 5312 12-Inch Dual Bevel Slide Compound Miter Saw
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After quite a bit of time working with this saw professionally, I have found it to be the most accurate, durable, fast to use, and easy to carry of the multitude I've come in contact with on the job site.
Accuracy:
The saw was accurate out of the box and has an easy system to adjust if it comes slightly off a perfect 90ยบ. I tested the accuracy by cutting an octagon out of some scrap wood, and found the last miter to meet very well, which is rare in a sliding saw.

I've only adjusted the saw once, after a big fall off a deck when another carpenter caught it with a 12-foot board. After the 9 foot fall, I didn't have the time to test the saw and make sure it was square, so I trued it instead. Other than a small crack in the handle, the saw came through the fall without any damage, and the crack doesn't affect the function at all.
Speed:
The upfront controls make tilting the powerhead a breeze! It's made trim jobs such as tall baseboard and crown molding go much faster and easier.
Portability:
That Bosch's engineers actually used this saw is apparent from the moment you pick it up. Best two (!) handles in the industry!
Cons:
Factory blade- be prepared to replace this sooner than a Makita, but at roughly the same time as a Dewalt, Ridgid, or Milwaukee. We've replaced the blade with Freuds, which we've found quite satisfactory.
Weight/Size: Make no mistake, this is a big saw. Portable, but be prepared for it to take up some room at the job site and on your truck. We keep ours on a TB4 stand- best stand we've used!

Kreg PRS1040 Precision Router Table System Review

Kreg PRS1040 Precision Router Table System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are a serious woodworker, this is by far THE best router table to buy. I bought the complete table, fence, stand, casters & micro-adjuster. Every little piece of hardware was accounted for and very neatly packaged. The reliability and accuracy of the fence make it very easy to use. And if you don't want to drill the insert yourself, for 3o bucks, Kreg will drill it for you, shipping included.
The assembly instructions were written in simple, easy-to-understand English and not like the 'Chinglish' from other manufacturers who outsourced their products. This router table examplifies American ingenuity & workmanship. It's definitely a 5-star rating.

ZipWall 4PL Plus Kit with Carry Bag, 4-Pack Review

ZipWall 4PL Plus Kit with Carry Bag, 4-Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a contractor who does a wide variety of home remodeling and repairs. 99% of the time it is an occupied home and my goal is to leave their residence the same if not cleaner than when I came. When it came to dust control I was trying everything because tape was not cutting it. Try to tape a plastic sheet to an acoustical ceiling! Then I heard about Zipwall and began my search. I found them on the internet but being an instant gratification person I went from store to store trying to find them and then I bought a 4 pack set. I was so impressed by the ease of it that I bought a second set (from another location because the store I had originally purchase the set from was sold out) and the side clamp sets as well. The foam rail is a must if you want to seal the top of the plastic on an acoustical ceiling. It conforms to the popcorn and helps to seal it out. Now it is not 100% dust free but it is a dramatic improvement over anything else I have tried. Oh yeah, do not use the thin painters plastic. A good breeze through the house and it will rip apart due to having the plastic taut. Experiance teaches you those things. Sorry about going on and on but they help me make my customers happy so I am happy. If I have any work to do in a house I bring them on my truck. In fact I am getting set to purchase another 4 pack because I am finding that as my job get larger so do my dust control needs. The only reason this did not get 5 stars is due to the price, not the performance of the product. It gets a tad heavy on the pocket book when you need 4 sets or more. Although it has not detoured me from getting more of them when I can. lol A thing we also use them for is when we are painting rooms with a sprayer in an occuped residence we make a box at the door way, rosin paper on the floor and another box/room outside with the zippers on both so we can enter and leave while spray is in the air and not have it travel outside of our containment area. Sorry for the long, long review, I could go on more if my wife wasn't saying "Enough allready" lol

The ZipWall 4PL 4-Pack Plus Kit with Carry Bag will help you create a small, temporary dust barrier in just a few minutes without using tape, staples, furring strips, or ladders. The ideal starter set for contractors, maintenance crews, and home owners, this kit includes everything you need to create a secure dust barrier in your workspace, including a convenient, heavy-duty Carry Bag that can hold up to 12 poles.
With the kit, one person can create a sturdy barrier in a matter of minutes.View larger.Ideal for a Wide Range of Construction ProjectsThe system is ideal for a wide variety of projects that create dust or other potentially harmful debris. These include demolition, drywall work, plaster repairs, insulation installation, sanding/painting, chimney work, bath and kitchen renovation, and more.
Patented Design for Fast, Easy, Damage-Proof InstallationWith the ZipWall Spring Loaded Poles, you don't need tape, staples, glue, furring strips, or ladders to create a secure dust barrier for your job site.
ZipWall's patented design features a twist-locking pole that lets you raise the sheeting without a ladder, and spring loading inside the pole to keep the barrier under constant tension. Spring loading also lets you lift the pole to tuck the sheeting under it for easy setup and adjustments. You can even reposition the barrier with just a twist of the pole.
Each pole features a patented design that secures the sheeting to the top of the pole without tape; this lets you attach and raise the sheeting quickly and easily. The non-skid, non-marking material at the top of the pole grabs the ceiling, while the non-skid GripDisk keeps the foot of the pole locked in position. Each pole supports up to 110 pounds and can be used with barrier material up to eight mils thick.
Ideal for Use on Dropped Ceilings or when Running Negative/Positive Air PressureThe ZipWall Spring Loaded Poles are ideal for dropped ceilings because you can place them directly on the grid to create a tight seal without pushing the tiles out of position.
If you are renovating a clean room, hospital, or other space where negative or positive air pressure is required, the non-skid surface at the tops of the poles and non-skid GripDisks under the feet of the poles will keep the dust barrier securely in position.
Foam Rails for a Continuous, Tape-Free Dust SealThe 4PL 4-Pack Plus Kit gives you the option of creating a dust barrier using the included Foam Rail accessories. Once the barrier is up, just remove a head from a pole, snap on a Foam Rail, and raise the pole into position to seal the plastic along the ceiling. Overlap the Foam Rails slightly, and you'll ensure a continuous, dust-tight seal along the entire ceiling with no more damaging furring strips.
Foam Rails also work great on dropped ceilings because you can place them directly on the ceiling's grid to create a tight seal without pushing the ceiling tiles out of position.
Create a Doorway Easily with the Standard Self-Adhesive ZippersWith the included Standard Zippers, you can create a doorway anywhere in plastic sheeting. Use one zipper for a simple doorway or place two zippers side by side to create a wide roll-up doorway. The wide doorway makes it easy to move equipment and building materials in and out, while still maintaining a dust-tight seal when closed.
Works with All ZipWall ProductsAlthough the ZipWall 4PL Plus Kit gives you everything you need to create a small, sealed workspace, you can also purchase each of the kit's individual components to set up larger workspaces. If you are working with cathedral or vaulted ceilings, you can also purchase the ZipWall 20-foot KT-20 poles.
Protect Children and Property from Lead-Dust ContaminationProviding a dust-tight seal around worksites is very important, especially when doing demolition or when renovating an older home that has lead paint. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates that dust be contained when as little as six square feet of lead paint is disturbed in homes or facilities where there are children under six years old.
Go to www.epa.gov/lead to get details on the latest lead-safety rules and lead-safe work practices. New EPA laws are an important reason to keep a ZipWall Barrier System on hand.
