We had to remove our bumper and put on a winch support but if we can do it at 62 most everyone else should be able to handle it. Installing the winch was easy. We also purchased the quick disconnects so it is not attached to the battery except when we need it. By doing it the way we did we were able to save at least a 3rd of the cost.

i bought this unit from the local tractor supply co (formerly central tractor) after returning a similar unit (Superwinch 1585200D) from the local northern tool and equip. the superwinch was a POS and came with no accessories. its main problem was that it would bind on itself because it lacked an integrated frame. it had 2 threaded rods connecting the two halves of the unit, and simply picking up the device it would twist its self such that the mounting points for each side were off by 5-10 degrees and no longer on the same flat plane. i returned it after several hours trying to get it to mount flat and true with no luck.
the champion 8k winch is exactly what i needed. installation was simple, took about 20 minutes to unpack it and fire it up. the instruction manual is written in English, not a half-assed translation from Chinese.
it has no trouble pulling my f250 out of the mud & it'll pull scrap cars onto my trailer with incredible ease.
if it came with 100ft of cable (instead of 95) and wireless controls I'd rate it 5/5.

THE GOOD--- 9000K, fast line speed, made in USA (only Warn, Ramsey, and Superwhinch are made in usa, if you like having a job, buy American), lifetime mechanical warranty (same as ramsey & warn), 1 year electrical warranty (same as ramsey & warn), 3 year solenoid warranty (warn & ramsey 1 yr) best warranty of all winch companies , solenoid is heavy duty and mounted securelly, wires from motor to solenoid are covered/ not visible, low profile, solenoid on side not blocking vehicle radiator, comes with hardware and rooler fairlead, load brake is on oposite side of motor not inside the drum to protect rope from heat if you put synthetic line on it (which i did due to how my bumpers fairlead mount was designed, easy to handle over heaver,stiff steel cable), motor has a drain plug to drain water out, etc.
THE BAD--- sticker on front of solenoid box fell off during shipping, serial number is not stamped on unit it is on a sticker which is starting to fall off.

(More customer reviews)I've been very pleased with this winch after a difficult installation... At one point I used this to drag the bottom out from under a 60ft poplar tree that wedged into the ground and hung up on another tree after I cut it. I know from the past that a come-along or even dragging with chains wouldn't have budged it. Speed is also faster than most.
HOWEVER, the bolts I received with the winch (1/2in) would not even fit through the mount holes! I went and bought 4, 7/16in grade 8 bolts and the nuts fit in the right side of the winch but not the left(?!) 3/8 was too small so I had to grind down 3 edges on the head of 2 of my 7/16 nuts to get this to mount, a royal pain! Great product though so I guess it's worth the trouble.
Also, I'd recommend going to a steel wholesaler and getting 1/2in plate steel to drill and mount to, save a LOT of money off the retail plate. Go to myspaceDOTcom/jbtvt and click pics to see the process I used.

Powerwinch P77702 215 12 Volt Trailer Winch Review

(More customer reviews)This product does not come any where near its advertised expectations. Even though it has a rated capacity of 1500 lbs., the actual rating must be closer to a few hundred pounds.
My old Powerwinch model 212(rated at 1000 lbs.) had finally worn out after many years of good service. Actually, the only thing wrong with it was that the clutch plates needed to be replaced, but unfortunately these parts were no longer available according to the manufacturer.
So I purchased the ST 215 winch as a replacement to help load my 15 foot fiberglass boat onto a trailer that has a bed of all rollers. I liked the idea of not having cable that becomes 'prickly' after years of use and felt that the additional 500 lbs of capacity would bring my boat onto the trailer easier.
The first time I used the ST 215 it was only able to bring the boat to within 3 or 4 feet of the front of the trailer before it stopped. No matter how tight the clutch was tightened the winch would not bring the boat in all the way. After several phone calls to the retailer and manufacturer it was decided to return it back to the manufacturer for repair. With a 4 week turn around I received the same winch back, but this time it did not work at all. After another call to Powerwinch I was told that maybe the small drive gear at the end of the motor shaft has come off during shipping. Fortunately I was able to fix this problem myself with locktite. Unfortunately, when used again back at the boat landing the winch still was not able to retrieve my boat all the way up the trailer. I returned the ST 215 again and this time after another 4 weeks turnaround time, I received a new winch. Again the same thing - the winch would not retrieve the boat all the way up the trailer. The winch was returned and another 4 weeks passed. This time the winch was not slipping as it had in the past and appeared to be able to load my boat. However, about a foot before the boat was all the way up on the trailer, the ST 215 exploded internally and the boat went flying down the trailer back into the water. Have you ever tried loading a boat without a winch? Backing the trailer until it was completely submerged worked - not a recommended method. Later on I opened up the case on the winch and found that one of the main shafts had sheared completely off right at the final drive gear. Obviously, this ST215 could not handle my little 15 foot fiberglass boat. My patience had worn out with this product. Not only had I to deal with the hassles of multiple returns and remounting this winch, but I lost many precious months of boat use. Powerwinch refused to refund my money and would only offer a product of lesser value in exchange, but fortunately the retailer made good on this product.
In my experience the ST 215 winch is not anywhere near capable of reaching its 1500 lb rating. My old model 212(Made in America) rated at 1000 lbs had no problem handling my boat for about 20 years. I think the ST 215 would work for a small aluminum jon boat or something of that nature, but definitely not anything more than that. The only good thing I found in this was the Powerwinch customer service - they paid shipping both ways for the multiple returns. I think the bottom line to this is that this product is made in China.

Smittybilt 98281 XRC 8 Comp Series Black Winch with Synthetic Rope and Aluminum Fairlead Review

I Called Smittybilt customer Service (Also procomp) and turns out when amazon.com shipped my unit it's possible the carrier dropped the box a certain way. My clutch lever was loose and this is NOT normal. They are sending me a replacement unit and gear cover to fix the issue for free. So if you purchase this - make sure the lever is tight when shifted from freespool to engaged as mine was pretty loose and could move with a pinky. B/c of the good customer service - i've changed to 5 stars
END UPDATE
I just installed this on my cherokee XJ so this review will be specific to that installation. I have an ARB Bull Bar on a 2001 XJ. I attached a picture to the amazon for review.
Packaging:
This product comes shipped in a box. the styrofoam must be cheap b/c some of it melted on the controller cable. There appears to be no dents or dings and things came well. The synthetic cable doesn't come on the drum and is in it's own plastic bag. It does come with a pull line for the winch itself which is not pictured but is pictured in what i've posted. It does come with all the hardware needed which is nice.
Clocking:
I had to clock the transmission on my winch so that the handle would point downwards. I had to mount my winch with the bottom facing the the front of the car (you can see the bolt holes). I also had to clock the motor side of it so the battery connections are easily accesible. There are instructions on how to do both the clocking in the winch kit.
Installation: This unit weighs about 60 pounds and I was able to mount the winch with the bumper in place. I had about 3/4" of room to spare. I had a helper thread the screws in for me. For the fairlead I had to drill two holes. then i had to spacer the bottom mounts of the winch out with washers to get the nut to fit behind it. The battery cable provided is long enough. If i had to do it again i would consider move the solenoid to be underneath my hood. then run the longer cables to the motor itself. At current the solenoid sits on my radiator support. I took the solenoid out of the plastic container. The solenoid box is WAY too big, it should be made much smaller in my opinion.
So far I've only used this on a test pull. I pulled my jeep towards another rig as an anchor. I did it once as a double line and again as a single line. It's decently fast for it's cost. The synthetic line was what sold me on this in addition to the $50 rebate that is being offered. The line itself is extremely light so that would help a lot since this is bolted on the very front end of my rig.
Issues:
I've found that the clutch handle does not stay engaged. When a load is relieved, it goes into a middle area between free and engaged. You need to apply some force to the handle to stay engaged. I've rigged something up for now that hold it. Will call their customer service and will go from there. My other complaint is a smaller and a truely waterproof solenoid case. These issues are what stop me from giving it 5 stars.

Mile Marker 7750141 8000 lbs Electric Winch Review

(More customer reviews)Although i don't own this exact winch, i had the ill fortune of owning one of their smaller ones for an atv. They seem to be quite proud of their MOFSET technology, but it is a real garage burner. I ordered one of the mile marker 2500 pound winches and finally got it 4 weeks after ordering. Apparently it had to come straight from China or something. Anyway, i liked the idea of variable speed...but it is just an idea. The winch failed after one use. It would pull in but not reverse out. And now, about a year after having it installed, during a simple ride checking cows on my farm, the winch suddenly comes on and pulls the cable through the fairlead and stalls out the engine from killing the battery. The winch switch was not on..the atv was idling while i was on the phone. Apparently the winch had drained the battery the night before also because when i got the atv out that evening the battery was dead. I had to jump off and disconnect the battery cables going to the winch control contacts...which were extremely hot. What if this happened while parked in a garage or barn? I think it would not be a stretch to say it could easily catch a vehicle on fire. I just ordered a warn winch to replace this cheap and dangerous junk.

WARN 34701 Semi-Hidden Kit Winch Mounting System Review

(More customer reviews)I put this on my 98 F150 Lariat last week. I went to Amazon.com and bought the Warn Semi-Hidden kit for $200 and went with a Smittybuilt 8000lbs winch for $290. First off I would like to point out that all the pics shown of the Semi-Hidden kit are always one step left of center, this way it looks to be centered on your truck. If you look at his head on you'll notice that its about 3 inches offset to the right and theres no way to correct it. Trust me my OCD tried to They have you use your OEM bolts that hold onto your tow hooks, I went and bought some slightly longer bolts so that they penetrated the top of the nuts inside the frame rails. The instructions are pretty clear once you stare at it long enough to make sense BUT!!!!!!! ALL the measurements are centered on your bumper.... this I didn't catch till after I cut the lower valance and tried to mount the kit, only to find that there is about a 1.5 to 2 inch gap on the left side and 1.5 inches that need to be cut away to make it fit.

(More customer reviews)seems to be a pretty good winch, and the small handlebar mounted switch is nice. though i have yet to actually use the winch. this warn winch and my warn bike-specific mounting bracket made for this RT15 winch the holes dont quite line-up, just barely off. i could see the holes through the mounting bracket but the bolts wouldnt actually screw in. also, its not that important but it would be nice if the warn winch and warn mounting bracket would use the same style of bolts. winch came with metric and the mounting bracket came with SAE bolts? why not make them the same, idc which but one or the other would be nice.

(More customer reviews)This is the best basic winch you can get. Don't be fooled into buying any of the cheaper ones. Learn from my mistakes. It does what it says it does. Pulls four tons. Has paid for itself in my case with one emergency use. Had to pull and lift 2.5 tons which it did with ease. I would recommend having a snatch block and either a chain or heavy strap to give more options when needed. It is not always possible to get the truck with the winch in exactly the right spot. The snatch block allows for more choices.
