SHOP FOX M1018 Small Combo Lathe Mill Review

This is the "real deal." It is mostly cast or machined steel and very heavy - shipping weight was 501#. I used a diesel engine hoist to get it up on the workbench. The workmanship appears to be very good. The vise and beds are very tight and no visible or measurable play (by hand) yet move smoothly. The gears, motor and all drive parts run very smooth and quiet. I have not used the mill portion yet but will update when I do. If you buy one be certain to check EVERY nut and bolt as loosening may occur in shipping. The gearbox on mine was only half full of gear oil. Also be sure to run the break-in process outlined in the manual. It takes about 6 hours to complete so plan time for it. I ran a 1/2"D x 6"L round 6160 and had less than .002 variation over the length.I then threaded the piece and was quite pleased with the consistency and accuracy of the threading. CEVA was the shipper and they were anything but expedient, I had to call them after sitting on in for almost a week at the local dock - CEVA does have tracking on their own Internet page. I have some materials ordered for upcoming projects and will update this when the machine has had more use.

SHOP FOX W1752 Mini Wood Lathe Review

I looked at Jet mini lathes for twice the price. This lathe is just as good in my opinion. I use it every day and love it. Along with the Barracuda chuck I got on Amazon, I haven't found any project I couldn't handle. $240 delivered to my door...can't beat it. Five pepper mills and ten or so lidded boxes later, I couldn't be happier.

SHOP FOX W1701 1-Horsepower Shaper Review

SHOP FOX W1701 1-Horsepower Shaper

I can't find anything I don't like about this shaper except for a locking height adjustment, but that's not really causing much of a problem. It's better than any delta I've used including the x5 because of the two direction switch (delta's switch is within the cabinet) and the more precise alignment of the fence. Plus the fence can be adjusted and locked down when the Deltas are wobbly. The shop fox's fence stays aligned with the miter gauge too. It's a nightmare to do that with a delta.
Never get a machine with an aluminum fence. You'll regret it.
I cut 2-1/4" crown molding on it often and it's never had a problem. The motor is about twice the size of a 3hp delta x5.

This 1 HP Shaper provides the best of all worlds - a rock solid router table, which allows the use of most 1/4" and 1/2" shank router bits, as well as a powerful shaper, which opens up a new realm of 1/2" bore shaper cutters. A split adjustment fence also makes edge jointing and full edge profiling safe and easy. This Shaper should be a part of every woodshop.

RIKON 70-100 12-by-16-Inch Mini Lathe Review

RIKON 70-100 12-by-16-Inch Mini Lathe

I first used this machine during a woodturning course and loved it. It is similar to the jet 12X20, with an easier belt adjustment design. The cover easily moves to the side. The jet lathe has 2 doors, one for the top belt and one for the bottom. Switching speeds is pretty quick with the rikon lathe. Performance is very good. I have been turning various spindle pieces with no problems to report. I purchased this model with the adjustable stand, which is solid and sturdy. I would highly recommend this lathe for beginner woodworkers.
