I have been using this lathe for approximately 1 year and this is what I have found.
I bought the lathe as a first lathe. I was inexperienced and on a budget. With those things in mind, it did well for the first few months. All the items were there, it shipped fast and was not difficult to assemble without assistance from anyone else, though I recommend getting a friend to help with some of the lifting.
I noticed a rattle and some vibration, but it was very minimal and it didn't seem to affect performance. I satisfactorily turned several bowls and a lot of spindle work. The motor gets a lot of bang out of the 3/4 horses. The mobile headstock is very versital. The tool rest is quite good. For a starter lathe it is a nice tool.
Now to the problems.
1) The base is not heavy or rigid enough. That is an easy fix and not a real detractor.
2) The tailstock base does not lock down well enough and I find myself retightening it frequently.
3) The biggest problem now is the constant worsening of the rattling and the vibration it causes, which translates into the spindle and handwheel. It makes it impossible to rechuch anything accurately and vibration is extreme, even with small loads. One of the pulleys is definately mis-machined and has both horizontal and vertical displacement while running. Delta has the pulleys on back order from their overseas supplier. I therefore took it in to the local authorized dealer and have yet to hear back. A wobbley handwheel and spindle movement make turning unenjoyable.
Searching the web and the message boards, I have seen about an even number of people saying they have had no problems as those who have had worse problems than I have. Most seem to revolve around the reeves drive and quality control...Perhaps the overseas manufacture of this lathe is at fault, I don't know.
If Delta could fix the problems with the drive and pulleys, this could be a great mid range lathe. With the mechanical difficulties I am having now with only moderate use (1-2 weekends a month), I could not recommend this lathe unless you test the specific one you are buying to make sure it is in good working order.

This is the "real deal." It is mostly cast or machined steel and very heavy - shipping weight was 501#. I used a diesel engine hoist to get it up on the workbench. The workmanship appears to be very good. The vise and beds are very tight and no visible or measurable play (by hand) yet move smoothly. The gears, motor and all drive parts run very smooth and quiet. I have not used the mill portion yet but will update when I do. If you buy one be certain to check EVERY nut and bolt as loosening may occur in shipping. The gearbox on mine was only half full of gear oil. Also be sure to run the break-in process outlined in the manual. It takes about 6 hours to complete so plan time for it. I ran a 1/2"D x 6"L round 6160 and had less than .002 variation over the length.I then threaded the piece and was quite pleased with the consistency and accuracy of the threading. CEVA was the shipper and they were anything but expedient, I had to call them after sitting on in for almost a week at the local dock - CEVA does have tracking on their own Internet page. I have some materials ordered for upcoming projects and will update this when the machine has had more use.

Vega D-36 36-Inch Professional Lathe Duplicator Review

Vega D-36 36-Inch Professional Lathe Duplicator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very happy with the duplication of this machine. However the video and the written instructions that were included were terrible. The video was made in 1990 and it shows an out of date assembly method. I watched the out of focus video and muffled sound for about 5 minutes. The video was no help on how the machine is put together. The written instructions were no better. The print is small and it does not show where to install all the parts that were given. The manufacturer needs at least a full color photo so you can have some kind of idea where things go. That being said I would still recommend this duplicator even though setting it up was time consuming. You can e-mail me at mccormickwoodworking.com if you need any help setting yours up. ....I find that this is a very nicely engineered tool. It is easyto set up after watching the video, though the written instructionsare poor. Some of the non-essential parts are poorly machined, but this does not effect their performance, just their asthetics. I would recommend this tool for anyone who would like a duplicator regardless of the lathe that you own. With a little help from Vega and Amazon, my duplicator fit my vintage Oliver lathe perfectly.

Jet 708376 JWL-1220 12-Inch X 20-Inch Wood Lathe Review

Jet 708376 JWL-1220 12-Inch X 20-Inch Wood Lathe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Jet 1220 is an excellent choice for people without a lot of shop space. It's similar to their venerable 1014 models which have been on the market for a while, but is considerably beefier and has somewhat larger capacity. Weighing in at almost 100 pounds, it's not really that portable, but the extra mass seems to help it run remarkably smoothly for a benchtop lathe. Jet also manufactures a bed extension which allows you to turn longer spindle work (the motor is powerful enough for most furniture work).
Jet's customer service is outstanding, by the way. I had a problem early on with the bolts on the tailstock and they shipped replacement parts the next day. I've now had the lathe over six months and it's been reliable.
I agree with the previous reviewer that electronic variable speed would be a really nice feature, though changing the speed manually by adjusting the belt only takes about 20 seconds or so.

The motor's flexibility allows you to tackle bigger projects or materials of various sizes without bogging down your lathe, and it also ensures consistent RPM through a much wider range of turning situations.
Cast-Iron Bed for Stability; Spindle Lock for Fast Fluting and VeiningA heavy-duty cast-iron lathe bed adds stability while dramatically limiting vibrations during operation so you enjoy precise results. Additionally, the spindle features a lock that makes it easier to remove faceplates, chucks, and other accessories with one hand. It also has indexing capabilities for fast and efficient fluting and veining operations.
Live Center and Hollow Tailstock for Efficient BoringTo help complete projects quickly and easily, and to tackle a range of jobs, the live center has a removable pin for boring through stock, while a hollow tailstock allows you to perform long hole boring for lamps and other vessels.
Cam-Lock Mechanism for Tool-Free AdjustmentsDesigned to be easy to operate, the JWL-1220 includes a cam-lock mechanism that gives you the freedom to adjust the headstock, tailstock, and tool-rest base without tools. There's also a built-in work light to illuminate your workspace as well as your workpiece while turning so you're able to see your results during every step of the work process.
Carry Handles and Cord Wrap for True PortabilityMeasuring 15.5 x 12 x 32 (WxHxD) and weighing 98.3 pounds, the truly portable JWL-1220 has integrated, large-diameter, retractable carry handles and a cord wrap for convenient storage of the six-foot power cord. I have turned on every lathe from an big Oliver pattern lathes slick Euopean models and this lathe has the best set of features for the money. In lathe work quick adjustments are needed to allow you to keep your focus on the form that you are trying to produce. A tool rest moved to the right spot at the right time keeps the tool running clean and eliminates tearouts. This is also a great saftey feature. That is just what this lathe has, features that only the most expensive lathes have in one machine. This rotating head found on only a handfull of other brands was a nice touch. Just as important was the 'live center' with the proper point for wood turning. Again the abaility to keep the tail support in the proper tension as the turning progress keeps everthing running smooth, And that is what wood lathe work is all about. If you do alot of work with large chuncks of wood you will want to add a pair of runners and place some weight on them. I am close to 6 foot tall and I like a little more height so I used 2X4 lumber to gain the height. I then placed a bead of silicone calk down on the floor and stuck the runners down to offer a solid base. I have used this meathod on several 'light' machines with good results.
Just as important as stock features are the after-markets items and there are plenty that fit the Jet. Just try to find Nova chuck to fit a big Oliver!

I looked at Jet mini lathes for twice the price. This lathe is just as good in my opinion. I use it every day and love it. Along with the Barracuda chuck I got on Amazon, I haven't found any project I couldn't handle. $240 delivered to my door...can't beat it. Five pepper mills and ten or so lidded boxes later, I couldn't be happier.

SHOP FOX W1701 1-Horsepower Shaper Review

SHOP FOX W1701 1-Horsepower Shaper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't find anything I don't like about this shaper except for a locking height adjustment, but that's not really causing much of a problem. It's better than any delta I've used including the x5 because of the two direction switch (delta's switch is within the cabinet) and the more precise alignment of the fence. Plus the fence can be adjusted and locked down when the Deltas are wobbly. The shop fox's fence stays aligned with the miter gauge too. It's a nightmare to do that with a delta.
Never get a machine with an aluminum fence. You'll regret it.
I cut 2-1/4" crown molding on it often and it's never had a problem. The motor is about twice the size of a 3hp delta x5.

This 1 HP Shaper provides the best of all worlds - a rock solid router table, which allows the use of most 1/4" and 1/2" shank router bits, as well as a powerful shaper, which opens up a new realm of 1/2" bore shaper cutters. A split adjustment fence also makes edge jointing and full edge profiling safe and easy. This Shaper should be a part of every woodshop.

I love the variable speed, but the low speed is too fast - and getting faster. It started at around 600 rpm, but now does not get below 1000. Ordered a new belt to get the speed down (as the belt wears and gets narrower, the speed goes up. The motor seems to have the power it needs, so stalling is minimal.
I don't have a big band saw, so my bowl planks are very out of round and chunky from the chain saw when I start, but I only had one (so far) that caused the lathe to walk across the floor. Probably would help to add some weight...
The main issue I have found so far is the the levers that hold the tool rest strip out very easily - especially if you use the articulated arm. Shop Fox has sent me 4 sets of replacement, and I just stopped using the arm so I could keep turning. The banjo foot is a little short, and is hard to work around the larger bowls without the arm. (but possible)
Customer Service has been great - sending replacement parts when I need them. They even sent a replacement belt at no charge.
The tail stock does not tighten into the correct position always, I have to put a twist on it when I secure it or it will line up a little to the left. With the twist it is spot on.
It has no reverse, no hand wheel, and no way to lock the spindle in the headstock.
All in all, it gets the job done, but does not have the polish and the craftsmanship of the bigger lathes. I have been able to turn 14" bowls, candle holders, lidded boxes, and most anything I have tried. Sometimes the pucker factor is high due to the speed, but I have managed.

For years I had been using a large, old, Delta lathe at work but since my retirement (ya, right) I no longer have that access. I have had to add power tools to my crib to accomplish the inventions and ideas that come into my head. I thought the Jet Mini lathe might be a bit too small but I was wrong. This lathe may not be large in size but it can do some pretty big work if and when you want it to. I do bowl turnings mostly and some spindle stuff and in both cases it has performed equal to if not better than the big Delta I used in the past. With the addition of the bed extension, a new PSI chuck, and slight modification to the setup I have turned up to 60 inch spindles and turned bowls out of soap stone with ease. Highly recommended!!!

I first used this machine during a woodturning course and loved it. It is similar to the jet 12X20, with an easier belt adjustment design. The cover easily moves to the side. The jet lathe has 2 doors, one for the top belt and one for the bottom. Switching speeds is pretty quick with the rikon lathe. Performance is very good. I have been turning various spindle pieces with no problems to report. I purchased this model with the adjustable stand, which is solid and sturdy. I would highly recommend this lathe for beginner woodworkers.
