Bosch 13618 18 Volt Brute Tough Hammerdrill Review

Bosch 13618 18 Volt Brute Tough Hammerdrill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned one of these for about 2.5 years and so far no serious complaints as this has been a consistently reliable tool. It has more than justified its high price with its solid performance--for most small masonry applications this drill has proven itself more than adequate. I have been in situations where I have had to really abuse this tool--drilling 1/2" holes in aged cement and while this tool couldn't keep up like a corded it still hasn't died. Oh, and these 18v batteries will work in my 24v Bosch tools, but their 24v batteries will not work in this 18v drill.
The batteries leave something to be desired and the weight still feels excessive to me for 18v--I purchased the 18v instead of an 24v SDS because I don't have masonry applications that often and would like a full-size drill that could handle the infrequent times when I would have to drill brick or concrete, but still be light enough for general use. That said, I have the 24v jigsaw and circular saw from Bosch, and I'm not sure that it wouldn't have been a better idea for me to get the 24v hammerdrill for battery interchangeability. The 18v is still pretty heavy--the carabiner clip on the bottom of the drill's handle seems like a great idea until you actually try to use it and then find it pulling your pants down around your ankles. The drill feels solid and well-made--although on mine the clutch's inked on numbers as well as the BOSCH name painted in red on the side of the motor have basically scratched off entirely. The included side handle is nice and the case is surprisingly decent.
I'm generally happy with this purchase, but I'm not sure it is necessarily the best option out there. I have a Metabo 15.6v I like more for general use and for serious hammerdrills I wish I had probably went either with the 24v Bosch SDS or the comparable Hilti 24v, or even the 19.2v P/C's. If I was doing a lot of masonry drilling inevitably I would have to go with a corded anyway.

DEWALT DC900KL 36-Volt 1/2-inch Lithium Ion Cordless Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit with NANO Technology Review

DEWALT DC900KL 36-Volt 1/2-inch Lithium Ion Cordless Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit with NANO Technology
Average Reviews:

A little background - I have virtually all the 18v tools that DeWalt has made, including two 18v hammer drills. I have built numerous houses with their tools, and done countless remodeling projects. You could say I'm a fan!
That said, the 36v hammer drill really hasn't impressed me. It is huge, so it doesn't fit in some spaces where the 18v will fit, and the power doesn't seem to be that much better. On the rare occasion that I need something more powerful than the 18v drill, I'm probably reaching for my Milwaukee wrist-wreaker (corded) or a 2" roto-hammer.
I really like the 36v line, and am impressed by the circular saw and recip saw. This drill just seems like a tool without a need. It rarely leaves my shop to go on a job, and I never use it at home either. It was part of a combo promotional kit, so I can't complain about the price, but I don't think I'd buy it outright.

The Dewalt DC900KL Heavy-Duty 36-Volt Cordless 0.5-inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit raises the bar for multi-use hammerdrills -- both corded and cordless. Engineered with a revolutionary 36-volt battery, the DC900KL provides professional users with increased levels of power, runtime, and battery life, while maintaining a similar weight to corded and other 18-volt hammerdrill/drill/drivers. The drill gives professional contractors the performance of a corded tool with the flexibility of a cordless drill.
Features, Speed and Runtime Dewalt designed the DC900KL with a patented three-speed transmission that optimizes the speed applied to each application. This feature offers professional end users maximum performance for a variety of heavy-duty applications. For example, the first speed is ideal for use with hole saws and self feed bits when drilling large holes in wood. The second speed is designed for use with auger bits or screwdriving. And the third speed is meant for hammer drilling into concrete. Additionally, the DC900KL is equipped with a 0.5-inch self-tightening chuck that automatically tightens throughout operation. This provides the end user with over twice the bit gripping torque of a traditional keyless chuck. To withstand the most demanding applications and the most extreme jobsite environments, Dewalt has designed the DC900KL with a high level of durability and reliability. For added comfort and control, this multi-use drill has an anti-slip comfort grip that makes it easy to handle.
When compared to the industry's leading corded and cordless hammerdrills, the DC900KL drills faster and longer than the competition. When tested against other corded hammerdrills by drilling a 1.375-inch hole saw into 20-gauge steel, the DC900KL was able to drill through the material in 3.87 seconds -- 22-percent faster than the Milwaukee 0234 and 300 corded hammerdrills. When testing the runtime of the tool, the DC900KL drilled an average of 67 holes using a 2.5625-inch self-feed bit through 2x10-inch boards -- 2.6 times the number of holes drilled by the industry's leading 18-volt hammerdrill/drill/driver.
The DC900KL has the ability to complete a variety of heavy-duty applications, such as drilling in wood with self-feed bits, auger bits and hole saws, fastening lag bolts and hammerdrilling in concrete as fast or faster than leading corded drills. Combined with up to three times the runtime of 18-volt drills, the DC900KL brings new levels of productivity to any jobsite.
Dewalt's Revolutionary 36V Battery The 36-volt cordless battery platform was developed to provide professional contractors with the performance needed to complete high-powered applications that were previously only possible with corded tools. By partnering with A123 Systems -- a developer of a new generation of lithium-ion batteries developed at and exclusively licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) -- Dewalt's 36V line of tools are equipped with a unique Nano-Phosphate lithium-ion design. These revolutionary batteries offers a high level of power, long run-time and durability when compared to conventional lithium technology. In fact, this technology delivers a battery with a maximum life of over 2,000 recharges and no frustrating battery memory. With this breakthrough innovation, this 36-volt tool is sure to live up to Dewalt's commitment to providing Guaranteed Tough products for the professional end user.
Note: Do not try to discharge the battery beyond the point where the tool no longer performs with the power needed for the job. This may cause permanent damage and prevent the battery from taking a full charge in the future. Do not tape the trigger on the tool to discharge the battery.
What's in the Box Dewalt DC900KL cordless hammerdrill/drill/driver, two 36-volt battery packs, one-hour charger, 360-degree side handle, and a heavy-duty kit box.

After reading other people review the 12v seem like a good idea. Small, compact, lightweight, and supposedly enough torque to break lug nuts with ease. Well 1st attempt on my car seems good but i did not torque it to tight maybe 50 ft/lbs.
My brother car (06 STI) I know for sure it was torque at 65 ft/lbs because I was there when the mechanic torque it. It loosen the lug nuts but the impact was struggling real bad. It took about four or five fully depressed until it loosen. One can argue that it might be seize but the wheel was put on only for one week.
It is a good impact wrench for other lower torque rating bolts when working on the car.
I regret not getting the 18v. And would highly recommend everyone to consider the 18v rather than the 12v.

Makita BDF452 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2-Inch Driver-Drill Kit
Average Reviews:

I have this kit along with the Makita BDF452HW kit and love them both to pieces. Both are solid performers in every sense of the word and are very light as well. I have worked the crap out of both of them and they just keep asking for more. You simply cannot go wrong with either of these drills.
That being said the only difference between this kit (BDF452) and the BDF452HW is the color(white vs blue), the plastic grip around the chuck, and the batteries. The BDF452HW includes 1.5 ampere hour batteries, where this kit includes the 3.0ah batteries, offering twice the runtime. If you can deal with a shorter, but still surprisingly good, runtime, you can save about $100 and go with the BDF452HW.
Either way, expect a great tool that should last for many years to come.
(PS- There were those who had battery issues, but apparently Makita has worked them out, as I have 8 Makita LiOn power tools for over a year and have had no issues whatsoever with battery longevity.)

Hitachi WR18DL 18-volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Impact Wrench Review

Hitachi WR18DL 18-volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Impact Wrench
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I install garage doors, and my impact wrench is my number one weapon. I have owned a 14.4 Milwaukee, 14.4 DeWalt, 18v DeWalt, and now this one. I had to send the Milwaukee back numerous times because of it's poor build quality. I have had motors die on the DeWalt due to its poor cooling design. There are small plastic fins in the motor which move air and keep the motor cool, and they have broken of on every DeWalt impact I have owned. I have been using the Hitachi for more than 4 months without a problem. I look actually look forward to using it. The battery stays secured to the drill, even after a four five foot fall. I laughed at the little light it comes with at first, but it has come in handy in dark garages. The torque is strong enough to pull the lug nuts of a wheel hub, and the battery life is stellar. One battery will get me through multiple double sized garage door installs. The DeWalt would kill at least too full batteries in only one install. It's safe to say that one Hitachi lithium-ion batter = 3+ DeWalt NiCads.
Another reviewer has mentioned a bad smell from the motor. All my impacts, drills, saws, and other power tools have gave off burning odor during the break-in of the tool. This is normal.
One other component of the impact which I enjoy is the pin. Unlike the DeWalt, the pin is designed to keep the socket secure when the pin of the impact is in line with the hole of the socket. The socket WILL come off of the impact with a little force unlike the DeWalt. With the DeWalt, the pin had to be compressed with a nail or screw in order to remove the socket.
To sum this review up... Buy the Hitachi.

The Hitachi WR18DL 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Impact Wrench is a powerful, lightweight cordless tool ideal for all drilling, driving, and fastening applications--everything from hanging doors and installing cabinetry to tightening carriage bolts, driving lags, and sinking deck screws. With class-leading impact, an industry-leading warranty, and Hitachi's exclusive HXP lithium-ion technology, the WR18DL Impact Driver is a reliable tool that has plenty of power to get the job done.
Powerful Drilling, Driving, and FasteningWith enough power to rival professional automotive wrenches, the WR18DL has an industrial-grade two-piece motor that features heavy-gauge copper coils for maximum power and long-lasting performance. And you know the WR18DL will pack a punch: it delivers an impact rate of up to 3,200 BPM, a no-load variable speed of 0-2,600 RPM, and a class-leading 1,950 in./lbs. of torque. For ultimate control, a unique two-step speed switch allows you to select between two power settings: Power Mode (0-2,600 RPM) and Save Mode (0-2,000 RPM).

With all that power, you have to keep things cool. Thankfully, Hitachi's unique cool flow technology sends a steady stream of air to the motor, which enables the impact to run harder and longer than most impact drivers without risking burnout.

Full of User-Friendly FeaturesLike all Hitachi tools, the WR18DL is full of features that were designed with the user in mind. To start, a non-slip Elastomer grip keeps you in complete control of the tool and provides comfort for all-day jobs. What's more, the driver weighs only 3.5 pounds, so it is extremely easy to maneuver and transport. A patented five-position belt hook with integrated LED offers easy portability, as well as illumination in dimly lit areas.

For further convenience, the WR18DL features a 1/2-inch square drive chuck for flexibility. Additionally, the driver is fitted with externally accessible carbon brushes and replaceable armature for easy maintenance and longer overall life.

HXP Batteries Last Three Times Longer and Weigh 50% LessThe WR18DL owes its light weight to two HXP Lithium-Ion batteries (included). These 3.0-Ah batteries weigh half of what traditional NiCd or NiMH batteries weigh. In fact, tools featuring HXP batteries are on average one pound lighter than tools using traditional batteries.

Additionally, HXP batteries last three times longer than their competition. Where NiCd and NiMH batteries could be used for up to 500 charge cycles, HXP Lithium-Ion batteries can be used for up to 1,500 charge cycles! An added bonus, the included quick charger replenishes the battery power in just 40 minutes, so you have less down time.

HXP Lithium-Ion batteries operate within optimal voltage limits, protecting both the tool and batteries from damage. Protection circuitry built into the batteries and charger monitors the charge and discharge for each battery cell, resulting in peak operating performance.

And if a surge in power is detected during use, Hitachi's Over-Current Protection technology will temporarily shut of the power to protect the batteries and tool from being damaged. This feature allows the power to return to optimal voltage, thereby extending battery and tool life beyond any competitive lithium-ion products.

HXP batteries come with a two-year HXP Lithium-Ion Battery Warranty, which protects against possible defects in materials and workmanship.

The Industry's Longest Lithium-Ion Tool WarrantyEvery Hitachi cordless power tool is designed to the highest standards and is rigorously tested for both performance and durability. All HXP Lithium-Ion cordless tools come with a Lifetime Lithium-Ion Tool Warranty, which protects against possible defects in materials and workmanship.

Makita BHP454 18-Volt LXT 1/2-Inch Lithium-Ion Cordless Hammer Drill Kit Review

Makita BHP454 18-Volt LXT 1/2-Inch Lithium-Ion Cordless Hammer Drill Kit
Average Reviews:

Popular Mechanics' glowing review of this drill is well deserved in my opinion. It is light, fast, well-balanced, and easy to use. Bosch's competing model (17618-01) feels faster and stronger, but it also weighs a ton, is a bit lengthy, requires you to switch between driving and drilling modes by rotating the 25 position clutch selector all the way back to zero, and the side handle slipped around a lot on the floor model I played with.
With the 9-9/16" Makita you can instantly flip between driver, drill and hammer modes with a little switch, hoist it above your head for extended periods of time without strain, and the forward/reverse selector is also much easier to hit. Throw in the handy depth gauge thingy and the belt clip and it's tough to miss those extra few BPMs Bosch has to offer unless you plan on dropping your drill on concrete with any degree of frequency. I can't comment on Bosch's battery life claims as I did not use one long enough to wear it down, but if you really need a lot more power than this, get something with a cord.
This will absolutely not replace anybody's rotary hammer, but if all you need to do is plant some Tapcons or knock a hole through some brick to pull cable through, it's a wondrous jack of all trades drill indeed. I have no complaints so far.

(More customer reviews)
Makita BTD144 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Impact Driver
Perhaps this direct comparison of the specifications and features of these tools will be helpful to you. Even if you don't agree with my conclusions or importance of certain tool features, this side-by-side comparisons should at least provide you with food for thought.
If you're looking for an impact driver performance comparison, this isn't it. (But, I own and use a Makita BTD144 & my comments on that tool ARE based on actual use.) The purpose of this comparison is to save you the work of collecting, collating, and documenting the specifications of each tool, so you can do your own [specification & feature] comparison. Manufacturer's specifications were taken at face value, since, for example, I have no way to verify torque or RPM data. To the extent that part of your buying decision is based on manufacturer's specifications & features, this should be of some help. To the extent that your decision is based on actual tool performance, you'll need to read other tool reviews.
I initially did this because of disappointment in the impact driver review in Fine Woodworking's 2010 Tool Guide. They didn't test this Makita driver, or the DeWalt, Milwaukee, Bosch, or Hilti models listed below.
My goal was to select the "best overall" professional caliber cordless impact driver with high capacity (e.g., 3.0 amp hour) lithium ion batteries. That ruled out brands such as Ryobi, Black & Decker, Sears, and Rockwell. Also, I had no interest in hybrid impact driver/drills such as the Makita BTP140 or Bosch 26618-01 since I already own other cordless drill/drivers and hammer/drivers.
The Ridgid R8823 flunked early-on because there were numerous negative reviews; from Fine Woodworking and others. Our local Home Depot sells the tool only (no batteries or charger) for fifty bucks, which could imply they are phasing this model out.
The initial culling resulted in the latest & greatest models from seven manufacturers. Keep in mind that when newer models are introduced, much of this information could change. (I use tools from all of these brands and have no favorites. No one company makes the best tool of every type.) Here are the seven models:
DeWalt...... DC827KL 18V Cordless XRP Li-Ion Impact Driver
Hitachi...... WH18DL 18-volt 3.0 Ah Cordless Impact Driver
Makita....... BTD144 18-Volt 3.0 Ah LXT Cordless Impact Driver

3. Hilti & Hitachi..: 6 3/8"
4. Panasonic......: 6 1/2"
Carrying case:
1. Milwaukee, Panasonic, Bosch, Makita, Hilti: yes
2. Hitachi, Dewalt no
Number of speeds/torque settings.

1. Hitachi........: 240
2. Milwaukee....: 297
3. Panasonic....: 299
4. Bosch..........: 317
5. DeWalt........: 329
6. Makita.........: 330
7. Hilti.............: 359
Conclusion:
All seven models deliver [approximately] triple the 450 in./lb. torque of a typical 18v cordless drill/driver, with no counter-torque to your wrist. All models are ambidextrous; i.e., they work the same in either hand. All models feature a 1/4" hex socket with a snap-chuck to securely hold drill or driver bits. Impact drivers can be quite noisy when "impacting" and all are reversible with variable speed triggers. The four multi-speed models use electronics versus a gear box, which is a good thing. (I.e., drills that change their speed range via a sliding switch connected to the gearbox can strip gears if said switch is moved while the tool is running.)
Depending on which factors are most important to you, your [specification & feature] rating won't necessarily agree with this conclusion. That is, having multiple speed/torque choices was paramount to me; 2 speeds are better than 1, and 3 speeds are better than 2. Having a short tool so it would fit in tight quarters was also important, as was being light-weight. Maximum torque wasn't particularly important to me, since these models are pretty close in that department, and all are quite powerful.
Also, recognize that no model is the best in every area, be it warranty, charge time, tool length, or whatever. Price had little sway in these rankings, other than designating the Hitachi "best value" because of its lower cost.
My ratings from 7 to 1, with number 1 being best overall:
7. Bosch: Having only a single speed/power choice is a serious deficiency, in my opinion. One speed is probably fine for carpentry, but one speed/power setting severely limits tool flexibility. E.g., it's too easy to snap or "over" drive a smaller screw when 1,400 in. lbs. of torque is your only choice and the sole method of controlling all that power is feathering the trigger. To be competitive, Bosch's next generation impact driver needs multiple speeds. Bosch's three-year tool warranty (1st year free replacement, 2 more years free repair), and their 2 year battery warranty is fourth best. This is the heaviest of the seven models. If these batteries fit other Bosch tools you own, that would be a good reason to buy this model.
6. Milwaukee: Their lithium batteries have a level-of-charge indicator; press a button and 1 to 4 led's show power remaining. This is very useful job-site feature, since otherwise, there's no way to tell how close a battery is to needing a recharge, before climbing the ladder, etc. Has one speed only; a serious deficiency. Milwaukee doesn't divulge battery amp hours. Batteries have the longest charge time (60 minutes, versus 30 minutes for most of the others). However, Milwaukee has the best tool & battery warranty of these manufacturers. My several Milwaukee power tools are all first-rate.
5. DeWalt: This single speed tool gets excellent customer reviews, but so does the Hitachi, which costs less and has two speed/power selections (0-2,000 RPM & 0-2,600 RPM). No tool case is included. Impressive "NANO" battery technology with a claimed 2,000 recharges. (An important tool selection factor if you will be recharging batteries daily.) Second best warranty: 3-years tool/charger/batteries, 1-year tool service contract; 90-day money-back. DeWalt doesn't divulge battery amp hours. Second heaviest of the seven models at 3.6 lbs. Would be much more versatile if it had 3 speeds, like the Makita & Panasonic.
4. Hilti: Fifth best warranty (see their web site for details); 2 speed/power choices; case is included; most expensive and one of the longest models @ 6 3/8". The only suppliers I could find were Home Depot and Hilti's web site. Only model with a wrist strap to reduce chances of dropping the tool; e.g., you're on a ladder. One of two models (along with Milwaukee) with a battery level-of-charge indicator; very useful feature before climbing that ladder. Hilti's specs don't say how long it takes for a battery charge, and Hilti never responded when I asked that question of their corporate sales unit. The battery has less amp hours (2.6 Ah) than the other models, but the tool has excellent ergonomics and is very...Read more›

DEWALT DCD970KL 18-Volt XRP Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit Review

DEWALT DCD970KL 18-Volt XRP Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this drill to replace my Dewalt DC925, which fell off a roof and landed in a big nasty mud hole, I just figured the drill was toast and ordered a new one, saved the 925 for salvageable parts. The DCD950 and the DCD970 are the EXACT same drill except the clutch ring, which is black on the 950 and silver on the 970. The difference is the batteries that are included 950 has the XRPs and 970 has the new NANO's(lithium-ion). OK, back to the comparison
Pros of the DCD970/950 VS. the DCD925
1. Much Better balance
2. More power in both low and mid-range(Dewalt says the DC925 has 480 unit watts vs the DCD970's 450, but the DCD970 is more powerful
3. WAY smoother speed selector (moves back and forth, not in an semi-ellipse like the 925)
4. L.E.D light on front
5. Shorter in length
6. Drill/screw/hammerdrill, various clutch settings are no longer on the same ring, clutch now has its own ring.
Cons of the DCD970
1. Due to pressure from a group of so called "tool users" who ONLY seem to care about aesthetics, Dewalt changed the base to the new nano style, which means if you actually use the drill it only has space for one bit on the front and WILL Not hold a screw guide or short nutsetters very well, whereas the old style base could fit a screw guide for TEK screws on one side and a 1/4" and 5/16" short nutsetters for tapcons on the other side.
However, overall the DCD970/950 is a excellent drill and deserves 4.75 stars, if Dewalt would change the base it would be a 5 star item, but that will never happen thanks to people who care more about how a tool looks rather than how well it works.
6-6-2009
I cleaned off my old DC925 and put in a fresh battery and the thing works!! Well now I have two, I guess that is what I get for asuming things, oh well I like the DCD970 better anyway.

Milwaukee 2611-24 18-Volt Hammer Drill Kit Review

Milwaukee 2611-24 18-Volt Hammer Drill Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Background - I own a sewer and water excavating company that gets into some building and concrete work as well so we have a lot of experience with corded/cordless tools of many brands. Hilti, Bosch, Dewalt, Makita.
After owning several Milwaukee drills including the previous V18 hammerdrill, 14.4v drill, and M12 compact driver this drill takes it all. This is just a initial review of my thoughts, its only been in the shop now for a week. It seems more akin to a corded drill than a cordless. I had a bit catch in some steel in first gear and the drill just about took my arm with it. The V18 could do a similar feat. Its overall feel is very good. It fits well, balanced well, fine and responsive and of course, incredible power. Its comparable in weight and size to the compact 14.4v milwaukee drill which has served me well reliably here and overseas.
I would give it an overwhelming 5 stars if not for the strange handlebar accessory that mounts using two jaws instead of a band like most others that squeezes around the gearcase. The handlebar in my experience never gets used anyways. It has the ability to have a belt hook and bit holder mounted by the battery at the bottom of the grip like the compact M18 driver/drill (2601-22), there is a mounting space and screw hole for them. But it doesn't come with it. Why after this price tag they didn't include them eludes me.
Its case is rugged with some softer black rubber for grip and fall protection. The batteries and charger also have rubber corners on them. The light is a nice feature but is essentially standard on new tools. The new style battery is smaller than the V18 and slides on and off better than the V18 battery. If you want an around the house drill get the compact 2601-22 but if you need something on the professional scale this drill is a no-brainer. Milwaukee is discontinuing their V18 line and this M18 is the future along with several new tools in the plans including a grinder and jigsaw this winter.
