Danby Countertop Dishwasher - DDW496W Review

Danby Countertop Dishwasher - DDW496W
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've waited nearly a year to review this product so that I could better speak to it's durability over time. I have to say, I was a bit wary of buying this because of some of the negative reviews, but I'm so glad I did!
I live in New York City and have never had a dishwasher. My kitchen sink was always chock full of last nights dinner plates, utensils, pans, etc. I absolutely hate to hand wash dishes. Every time I'd visit a friend who had a dishwasher, I'd salivate just thinking how great it would be to have one of my own. So, I put the Danby 496W on my wish list last year and received it in mid-December. To date, I've had NO problems whatsoever. It runs like a dream, hasn't leaked, and cleans amazingly well. I was so psyched to use my new dishwasher that I literally washed every single thing I owned the first day I had it. Does this sound extreme, well, if you're someone who'd rather insert bamboo spikes under your fingernails than hand wash dishes, than you understand my elation.
I do think you have to be careful when you use it so that you don't have some of the problems others have had:
TIPS
1. Clean out the food screen each time your run the dishwasher.
2. Run the hot water first to get it really hot before connecting the dishwasher.
3. As soon as your cycle is done, crack the door open so dishes can dry quickly. This will also help save your window's seal and it will be less likely to leak!
4. Clean out the dishwasher once per month. I pour two cups of white vinegar into the bottom of my empty dishwasher (make sure to do this after water has filled the machine, just before the cycle starts) and then run it through the longest cycle. It will help dissolve any buildup and will keep your dishwasher running well.
5. Be careful how you load the dishwasher. As another reviewer said, if you have a dishes or utensils in certain places, they will hang down too low and the spinner arm will hit them and not work properly. This isn't that complicated, you figure out how to best load it by trial and error. It's amazing how much you can cram in this and still get a sparkling clean load! For example, I've put six 10.5 inch dinner plates, 4 salad plates, 3 bowls, 4 mugs, two 10-inch knives, two wooden spoons.
6. Let's be honest, the 'cup' rack/shelf on the upper left side of the dishwasher is useless for cups. I've found it very useful for washing small bowls (i.e. cereal bowls). This frees up more room for mugs in the bottom rack.
7. Once you've got your dishwasher fully loaded, slide utensils like long chef's knives, wooden spoons, etc. in between your other dishes so that they are lying on their sides. Just make sure that they aren't hanging down too low!
8. I find that powdered detergent works better than gel detergent. I have no idea why, but I really thing it cleans better. Make sure to use detergent that contains enzymes as they help dissolve leftover food from your plates and utensils.
UPDATE!
Just wanted to circle back to let everyone know that my Danby is STILL going strong after two years. I've had zero problems with it and continue to love it!
YEAR THREE UPDATE - December 2009
Today was the THIRD anniversary of my beloved Danby dishwasher. Still running perfectly. I will try and post a video showing how it runs and how much you can fit in it. Glad people are finding the tips helpful!

Frigidaire FFC0723GB 7-1/5-Cubic-Foot Manual-Defrost Chest Freezer, Black Review

Frigidaire FFC0723GB 7-1/5-Cubic-Foot Manual-Defrost Chest Freezer, Black

I ordered this twice. The first time UPS told me they received it damaged and I never saw it. I ordered it again and it arrived. When my husband and I tilted it to remove the box, the entire bottom was in pieces. And no wonder... there wasn't a center bottom to the box. The styrofoam inside around the chest was so useless that when we opened the top, there were various places on the chest lid that had big indentations. This is my first rating after years of loyalty to products bought on Amazon, and I can't remember who the seller was, but I had to mention how much of a disaster this packaging was. I would not recommend this seller. I went to Sears to buy it when they were having a sale, and it was cheaper than this one was. And a little elbow grease on my part was worth knowing I was getting an intact freezer.

I have owned this for 2 months now, and I am so glad I spent the extra $$$ for this air conditioner. Simply, it kicks butt! It has every feature one could want, 11.4 EER and Energy Star compliant. It cools my 20'x10' bedroom with ease and quietly! plus I got a rebate for E-star compliance.

I'm a huge fan of cordless tools. I use them every day all day long. The 18v Makita is a wonderful tool. "Powerful", is an understatement. They're sooo smooth!( Love those ball bearings )I have had two now for 4 months. They are a direct replacement for 2 18v yellow drills that weren't holding up. I can't dog DeWalt, because they make too many good products. The new makita's are the most durable drills I have ever seen. I've had 35 from all the major manufacturers in the past 5 years. They are kind of heavy to use all day long .However they are lighter than the DeWalt and Milwaukee 18v drills. The new 24v drills are way too heavy for extended use.

Bosch 13618 18 Volt Brute Tough Hammerdrill Review

Bosch 13618 18 Volt Brute Tough Hammerdrill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned one of these for about 2.5 years and so far no serious complaints as this has been a consistently reliable tool. It has more than justified its high price with its solid performance--for most small masonry applications this drill has proven itself more than adequate. I have been in situations where I have had to really abuse this tool--drilling 1/2" holes in aged cement and while this tool couldn't keep up like a corded it still hasn't died. Oh, and these 18v batteries will work in my 24v Bosch tools, but their 24v batteries will not work in this 18v drill.
The batteries leave something to be desired and the weight still feels excessive to me for 18v--I purchased the 18v instead of an 24v SDS because I don't have masonry applications that often and would like a full-size drill that could handle the infrequent times when I would have to drill brick or concrete, but still be light enough for general use. That said, I have the 24v jigsaw and circular saw from Bosch, and I'm not sure that it wouldn't have been a better idea for me to get the 24v hammerdrill for battery interchangeability. The 18v is still pretty heavy--the carabiner clip on the bottom of the drill's handle seems like a great idea until you actually try to use it and then find it pulling your pants down around your ankles. The drill feels solid and well-made--although on mine the clutch's inked on numbers as well as the BOSCH name painted in red on the side of the motor have basically scratched off entirely. The included side handle is nice and the case is surprisingly decent.
I'm generally happy with this purchase, but I'm not sure it is necessarily the best option out there. I have a Metabo 15.6v I like more for general use and for serious hammerdrills I wish I had probably went either with the 24v Bosch SDS or the comparable Hilti 24v, or even the 19.2v P/C's. If I was doing a lot of masonry drilling inevitably I would have to go with a corded anyway.

Danby Portable Top-Load Washer Review

Danby Portable Top-Load Washer

I bought this washer 2 years ago and it is still working great. I had no problems installing it at all despite of the fact that I am a woman:-) It is big enough for 2 people and I had even washed blankets in it. It is easy to wheel it all over the place as long as you don't have carpets in the bathroom or the kitchen:-) I thought that it will be noisy but is actually quiet and it is easy to connect to the sink. The only problem I had (which is more of a problem with my sink faucet than with the machine) is that sometimes it leaks from the faucet but once I replaced the rubber circle inside of the connector it was great. Before the replacement I just stopped the water flow once the machine was full and washing. And I have a portable dishwasher which connects to the same sink using the same adapter so there is no need to change it if you have more than one appliance.

DEWALT DC900KL 36-Volt 1/2-inch Lithium Ion Cordless Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit with NANO Technology Review

DEWALT DC900KL 36-Volt 1/2-inch Lithium Ion Cordless Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit with NANO Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A little background - I have virtually all the 18v tools that DeWalt has made, including two 18v hammer drills. I have built numerous houses with their tools, and done countless remodeling projects. You could say I'm a fan!
That said, the 36v hammer drill really hasn't impressed me. It is huge, so it doesn't fit in some spaces where the 18v will fit, and the power doesn't seem to be that much better. On the rare occasion that I need something more powerful than the 18v drill, I'm probably reaching for my Milwaukee wrist-wreaker (corded) or a 2" roto-hammer.
I really like the 36v line, and am impressed by the circular saw and recip saw. This drill just seems like a tool without a need. It rarely leaves my shop to go on a job, and I never use it at home either. It was part of a combo promotional kit, so I can't complain about the price, but I don't think I'd buy it outright.

The Dewalt DC900KL Heavy-Duty 36-Volt Cordless 0.5-inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit raises the bar for multi-use hammerdrills -- both corded and cordless. Engineered with a revolutionary 36-volt battery, the DC900KL provides professional users with increased levels of power, runtime, and battery life, while maintaining a similar weight to corded and other 18-volt hammerdrill/drill/drivers. The drill gives professional contractors the performance of a corded tool with the flexibility of a cordless drill.
Features, Speed and Runtime Dewalt designed the DC900KL with a patented three-speed transmission that optimizes the speed applied to each application. This feature offers professional end users maximum performance for a variety of heavy-duty applications. For example, the first speed is ideal for use with hole saws and self feed bits when drilling large holes in wood. The second speed is designed for use with auger bits or screwdriving. And the third speed is meant for hammer drilling into concrete. Additionally, the DC900KL is equipped with a 0.5-inch self-tightening chuck that automatically tightens throughout operation. This provides the end user with over twice the bit gripping torque of a traditional keyless chuck. To withstand the most demanding applications and the most extreme jobsite environments, Dewalt has designed the DC900KL with a high level of durability and reliability. For added comfort and control, this multi-use drill has an anti-slip comfort grip that makes it easy to handle.
When compared to the industry's leading corded and cordless hammerdrills, the DC900KL drills faster and longer than the competition. When tested against other corded hammerdrills by drilling a 1.375-inch hole saw into 20-gauge steel, the DC900KL was able to drill through the material in 3.87 seconds -- 22-percent faster than the Milwaukee 0234 and 300 corded hammerdrills. When testing the runtime of the tool, the DC900KL drilled an average of 67 holes using a 2.5625-inch self-feed bit through 2x10-inch boards -- 2.6 times the number of holes drilled by the industry's leading 18-volt hammerdrill/drill/driver.
The DC900KL has the ability to complete a variety of heavy-duty applications, such as drilling in wood with self-feed bits, auger bits and hole saws, fastening lag bolts and hammerdrilling in concrete as fast or faster than leading corded drills. Combined with up to three times the runtime of 18-volt drills, the DC900KL brings new levels of productivity to any jobsite.
Dewalt's Revolutionary 36V Battery The 36-volt cordless battery platform was developed to provide professional contractors with the performance needed to complete high-powered applications that were previously only possible with corded tools. By partnering with A123 Systems -- a developer of a new generation of lithium-ion batteries developed at and exclusively licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) -- Dewalt's 36V line of tools are equipped with a unique Nano-Phosphate lithium-ion design. These revolutionary batteries offers a high level of power, long run-time and durability when compared to conventional lithium technology. In fact, this technology delivers a battery with a maximum life of over 2,000 recharges and no frustrating battery memory. With this breakthrough innovation, this 36-volt tool is sure to live up to Dewalt's commitment to providing Guaranteed Tough products for the professional end user.
Note: Do not try to discharge the battery beyond the point where the tool no longer performs with the power needed for the job. This may cause permanent damage and prevent the battery from taking a full charge in the future. Do not tape the trigger on the tool to discharge the battery.

I had never heard of Danby until I started looking for a small under-counter dishwasher for a small space. Then I discovered that Danby is one of the biggest companies nobody had ever heard about. (Note that the review template from Amazon doesn't mention the name.) Those who had used the units were satisfied and so I ordered one. Boy, was I in for a pleasant surprise. The unit was easy to install (though the instructions were confusing) after cutting out the opening, but the surprise came when we started using the unit. For one thing, it calls for a rinse product as well as dishwasher soap, and for another, it has a built-in water softener, very important here in western Minnesota. What blew me away was how clean the thing got our dishes, even without the rinse product. I've had Kenmore and I've had Kitchen Aid, and THIS IS THE BEST DISHWASHER I HAVE EVER HAD! Especially for under $400.00, shipping and all! I may change my tune a year or five down the line, but this little Danby is built like a Sherman tank, and with high quality all down the line. Based on my limited experience, I can recommend this item highly.

Haier HLP140E 2-3/5-Cubic-Foot Compact Tumble Vented Dryer Review

Haier HLP140E 2-3/5-Cubic-Foot Compact Tumble Vented Dryer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have only had this dryer for about 10 days now, but I'm very happy with it! There is one other review for this dryer and in it they say it takes a long time for the clothes to dry... this is true. But I think it's to be expected since this dryer can simply be plugged into any outlet unlike a normal dryer. So, smaller dryer... less power... longer drying time. The reason I'm giving this unit 5 stars is because if getting out the laundry mat is as important to you as it was to me, then the extra drying time is more than acceptable. Also, this dryer is VERY QUITE, simple to use and set up. For the first 5 loads I just had the machine sitting on the floor near a window - I didn't even have the hose out the window. It did get my apartment a little warm and humid (not since I've put the hose out the window of course), but I'm just making the point that it is very easy to set up.
How long does it take to dry clothes? I'm still trying to get all the drying times down myself. But I'm having much better luck using the timed dry instead of the auto dry. On auto drying it does seem to take hours before it finally stops. So I've just started to try and figure how long certain things dry. For example, my sheets (fitted bottom and the top sheet) I'm drying now between 60 or 90 minutes. On both times the sheets are close to dry and hanging them up for a little longer is enough. I guess this review is a little premature since I don't have the dry times down yet. But I have the feeling 90 minutes will dry most stuff about 90 percent.
I think once I make the adjustment and get things organized drying will not be a hassle at all. And for me the extra fiddling I have to do while drying in my apartment is so much better than having the hassle of organizing taking everything out of apartment, waiting, digging up quarters, using a machine that has been used 10,0000 times instead my nice new machine.
UPDATE! THE SOLUTION! March 18, 2009
I have owned now the Haier Washer and Haier Dryer now for 5 months and I still am incredibly happy with my purchase. Even with the very long drying times with the dryer I love not having to go down to the W&Ds in the apartments laundry room.
But there is a solution to the long drying time with the dryer: Not long after posting my review C. Mok posted this comment (note: the spin dryer is very small 24 inches high, 14 inches in diameter - $134.00 + shipping - and only one company seems to sell them in the US):
C. Mok says:
May I suggest complementing your electric dryer with a small spin dryer? I bought a spin dryer on a whim when I remembered those were the only things used in Asia when I was there during the 80s. It has worked really well along side my small portable washer in my small apt. I hang dry most of my laundry except when I'm in a hurry. The spin dryer cuts drying time in half easily. Most spin cycle on washers go about maybe 600 - 800 rpm. The little spin dryer spins at 3000rpm. On a small wash (2 bath towels) it can spin out over a quart of water (over 32fl oz) in less than 2 minutes. That is a significant amount of water to evaporate using normal dryers. This will shorten your drying time and also save your clothes from heat damage from the prolong drying times. The only catch is trying to balance the load in the small spin dryer. I find it easiest to load all the heavy cotton clothes on the bottom and the lighter synthetic clothes on the top. Then give it a good shove and compress everything tightly down. Thats has worked really well for me. Check out [...]for a small spin dryer. Good luck!
I finally bought the spin dryer to work with my Haier dryer about a month ago and now washing and drying is very similar to using normal sized machines. Now there is just a very short middle step. I'll give examples of some of the basic loads I do each week.
Whites (socks 10-12 pair, underwear 10-12 pair, t-shirts 2-4):
After using the washing machine I put all clothes in the spin dryer. It is important to pack the spin dryer the way the manual suggests to prevent the dryer from bouncing around like R2-D2 in a bad mood. With small items like socks and underwear though, it's pretty easy, and after experience you will see what you can just drop and press in the SD (spin dryer)and what you need to wrap around. I does sound like this middle step is a pain, but after you use it a bunch of times, it's pretty easy and you don't give it a second thought. When you turn the SD on, it starts to spin, shakes a bit, then settles down and gets very quiet as it picks up speed. When you first use the spin dryer, you think, wow, i got ripped off! No water is coming out!.... But wait... after about 30 seconds water starts flow out. Dribbly at first but then... wow! With a full load, CUPS of water fill your water catcher. I have had between 1 and 5 cups of water (normally 2-3), depending on what I was washing. Once the water flow starts to slow down, you turn off the machine. It only takes 2-3 minutes.
I then take my clothes and put then in the Haier dryer and set the timer to 90 minutes. After 90 minutes the clothes are BONE DRY. I'm not sure how long it actually takes, but if the load is a little smaller there is a very good chance they will be dry after only 1 hour.
Darks: 2 pairs of pants, 6-8 T-shirts, 1 sweat shirt. In the SD, you do now need to put the pants in first, wrapped into the bottom of the machine, then the sweat shirt, then the shirts. Again, after 90 minutes - bone dry (as I said, they are probably done after 70 min? 80 min? I'm not sure because I just open it after the buzzer goes off.
Sheets (king size): OK, sheets are the only thing that I wash that can be slightly problematic. Because these are large items, they can make R2-D2 (the spin dryer) unhappy. You have to be the most careful here wrapping them into the spin dryer. In the Haier Dryer also, they can at times ball up. I normally wash 2-3 sheets at a time. Put them all in the spin dryer at once, then in the Haier dryer for 60 minutes EACH. I found that they don't ball up when you dry them separately. So yes, it would still take you 2 hours to dry 2 sheets.
The Washer and dryer are freakishly quite, but the Spin Dryer does have a lot of vibration at the beginning and end of it's 2-3 minute spin. Not a big deal because of the short time, but if you have thin floors and a neighbor under you, they might wonder what is going up every 45 minutes for 3 minutes while you are doing laundry. I suggest getting 1 or 2 thick squares of carpet.
UPDATE July 6th, 2009
I did just read the comment from someone who had problems ordering a spin dryer. I can't speak for that company other than mine arrived on time and in good shape and still works like new. I did go to the BBB link and did only see 1 complaint about the company.
For reasons I don't understand, I was only ever able to find 1 company in the US that sells a spin dryer. Maybe some enterprising individual might think of importing some from a country that uses them more and start a business selling them. I had a friend who told me that they are pretty common in Europe. (Note: I do remember I had to wait a month to order a spin dryer from the Laundry Alternative because they were out of stock. I'm not vouching for the company - just giving my personal experience.
November 6, 2009 UPDATE
I was curious to see how long I've had my washer and dryer to calculate how much I've saved in quarters (13 months x $20 = $260). It's been over a year so I thought I'd add a first year update. The washer, dryer, and spin dryer all work like new. Which is great, I'm not sure if I'm lucky or not, but in my case they are fine. I did make the decision not to use bleach early on. I'm not sure if that has made any difference.
As far as drying. I reread my review and while it is true, if you use the spin dryer before the Haier dryer your wash will be bone dry in 90 minutes, that is with a small-med load. If you fill the dryer to the max. It will take 2-2.5 hours to dry. I just make sure to do medium loads more often.
My mom told me a secret to drying sheets! I still dry one sheet at a time for 90 minutes, but my mom said, AND SHE WAS RIGHT, if you put in a DRY towel (I use a big one) the sheet does not ball up while it spins. This has made a big difference in drying sheets, which are a pain to dry. I also bought a retractable clothesline from amazon. So when I dry sheets, (I don't use the spin dryer for sheets because the sheets are so big they can make the spin dryer go out of balance), I hang one on he clothes line, and they dry 1 for 90 minutes. Then I take the one out of the dryer and put it on the clothes line and put the one one from the clothes line in the dryer. Sometimes I have to put a sheet in for another 30 minutes.
Also, you really do need pull out and clean out the filter after every load. It really makes the drying time MUCH faster because it allows the air to flow out of the machine. You have to clean the lint off the "catch" and also the black filter thingy. Someone posted that an improvement on removing the filter would make the dryer a lot better. I totally agree with that.
The bottom line is: It depends on your personality; which do you dislike more? Digging up quarters, piling up your soap on your clothes in a basket and making a bunch of trips to the laundry room once a week or setting up these crazy contraptions in your apartment and turning your laundry doing into an art form where you have to get creative and be a little unorthodox.

Makita BDF452 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2-Inch Driver-Drill Kit Review

I have this kit along with the Makita BDF452HW kit and love them both to pieces. Both are solid performers in every sense of the word and are very light as well. I have worked the crap out of both of them and they just keep asking for more. You simply cannot go wrong with either of these drills.
That being said the only difference between this kit (BDF452) and the BDF452HW is the color(white vs blue), the plastic grip around the chuck, and the batteries. The BDF452HW includes 1.5 ampere hour batteries, where this kit includes the 3.0ah batteries, offering twice the runtime. If you can deal with a shorter, but still surprisingly good, runtime, you can save about $100 and go with the BDF452HW.
Either way, expect a great tool that should last for many years to come.
(PS- There were those who had battery issues, but apparently Makita has worked them out, as I have 8 Makita LiOn power tools for over a year and have had no issues whatsoever with battery longevity.)

American Standard 2403.128.020 Compact Cadet-3 FloWise Toilet, White Review

American Standard 2403.128.020 Compact Cadet-3 FloWise Toilet, White

It will flush anything in the water. If there is tissue on the bowl, it might not flush it. There is not much swishing around the bowl. It is extremely fast, quiet, and efficient. It looks beautiful and is very comfortable. It is a great improvement over the one I had from 1985. It used so much water, but it took such a long time! It was also too tiny and low.

When you purchase a Cadet 3 Series toilet from American Standard, you'll get smart design, high performance, and fewer clogs--all at a great price. Cadet 3 Series toilets come in a variety of styles: one-piece and two-piece models, elongated and round front bowls, right-height and compact versions, and even water-efficient models that flush on just 1.28 gallons. But all Cadet 3 models share something in common: they're hardworking toilets with superior performance.
Cadet 3 Flushing SystemIn the most recent independent MaP (Maximum Performance) tests, the Cadet 3 Flushing System received the highest possible rating, handling 1,000 grams of solid waste in a single flush. This means you can count on your Cadet 3 toilet for dependable one-flush performance.
Cadet 3's smart gravity design delivers higher performance with fewer clogs. Engineered for a stronger, more reliable flush, the Cadet 3 Flushing System means you don't have to flush twice, yet each flush uses 20 percent less water than standard low-consumption 1.6-gallons-per-flush toilets, saving you water and money.
Extra-Wide Three-Inch Flush ValveCadet 3 toilets feature a large, chemical-resistant flush valve that allows more water to enter the bowl more quickly, creating a cleaner flush. It won't warp or distort like ordinary flappers, and the three-inch opening allows water to flow into the bowl over 80 percent faster than a standard two-inch flush valve.
2-1/8-Inch Siphon TrapwayWith a larger diameter than the industry standard, Cadet 3 toilets have a fully glazed siphon trapway. This trapway features no choke points and a two-inch ball pass to help prevent clogging, which means it can move a 60 percent larger mass than a standard two-inch trapway.
EverClean SurfaceTreated inside and out, Cadet 3 tanks and bowls feature a permanent EverClean surface. This system incorporates a patented silver-ion additive right into the material to protect it from mold, mildew, algae, and fungus that could cause deterioration or staining. You'll love how the mirror-like EverClean surface is easy to keep clean and stays cleaner longer, even after years of use.
Five-Year Worry-Free WarrantyThe Cadet 3 FloWise Toilet is backed by a five-year warranty that covers everything inside and out.
