DEWALT DC900KL 36-Volt 1/2-inch Lithium Ion Cordless Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit with NANO Technology Review

DEWALT DC900KL 36-Volt 1/2-inch Lithium Ion Cordless Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit with NANO Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A little background - I have virtually all the 18v tools that DeWalt has made, including two 18v hammer drills. I have built numerous houses with their tools, and done countless remodeling projects. You could say I'm a fan!
That said, the 36v hammer drill really hasn't impressed me. It is huge, so it doesn't fit in some spaces where the 18v will fit, and the power doesn't seem to be that much better. On the rare occasion that I need something more powerful than the 18v drill, I'm probably reaching for my Milwaukee wrist-wreaker (corded) or a 2" roto-hammer.
I really like the 36v line, and am impressed by the circular saw and recip saw. This drill just seems like a tool without a need. It rarely leaves my shop to go on a job, and I never use it at home either. It was part of a combo promotional kit, so I can't complain about the price, but I don't think I'd buy it outright.

The Dewalt DC900KL Heavy-Duty 36-Volt Cordless 0.5-inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit raises the bar for multi-use hammerdrills -- both corded and cordless. Engineered with a revolutionary 36-volt battery, the DC900KL provides professional users with increased levels of power, runtime, and battery life, while maintaining a similar weight to corded and other 18-volt hammerdrill/drill/drivers. The drill gives professional contractors the performance of a corded tool with the flexibility of a cordless drill.
Features, Speed and Runtime Dewalt designed the DC900KL with a patented three-speed transmission that optimizes the speed applied to each application. This feature offers professional end users maximum performance for a variety of heavy-duty applications. For example, the first speed is ideal for use with hole saws and self feed bits when drilling large holes in wood. The second speed is designed for use with auger bits or screwdriving. And the third speed is meant for hammer drilling into concrete. Additionally, the DC900KL is equipped with a 0.5-inch self-tightening chuck that automatically tightens throughout operation. This provides the end user with over twice the bit gripping torque of a traditional keyless chuck. To withstand the most demanding applications and the most extreme jobsite environments, Dewalt has designed the DC900KL with a high level of durability and reliability. For added comfort and control, this multi-use drill has an anti-slip comfort grip that makes it easy to handle.
When compared to the industry's leading corded and cordless hammerdrills, the DC900KL drills faster and longer than the competition. When tested against other corded hammerdrills by drilling a 1.375-inch hole saw into 20-gauge steel, the DC900KL was able to drill through the material in 3.87 seconds -- 22-percent faster than the Milwaukee 0234 and 300 corded hammerdrills. When testing the runtime of the tool, the DC900KL drilled an average of 67 holes using a 2.5625-inch self-feed bit through 2x10-inch boards -- 2.6 times the number of holes drilled by the industry's leading 18-volt hammerdrill/drill/driver.
The DC900KL has the ability to complete a variety of heavy-duty applications, such as drilling in wood with self-feed bits, auger bits and hole saws, fastening lag bolts and hammerdrilling in concrete as fast or faster than leading corded drills. Combined with up to three times the runtime of 18-volt drills, the DC900KL brings new levels of productivity to any jobsite.
Dewalt's Revolutionary 36V Battery The 36-volt cordless battery platform was developed to provide professional contractors with the performance needed to complete high-powered applications that were previously only possible with corded tools. By partnering with A123 Systems -- a developer of a new generation of lithium-ion batteries developed at and exclusively licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) -- Dewalt's 36V line of tools are equipped with a unique Nano-Phosphate lithium-ion design. These revolutionary batteries offers a high level of power, long run-time and durability when compared to conventional lithium technology. In fact, this technology delivers a battery with a maximum life of over 2,000 recharges and no frustrating battery memory. With this breakthrough innovation, this 36-volt tool is sure to live up to Dewalt's commitment to providing Guaranteed Tough products for the professional end user.
Note: Do not try to discharge the battery beyond the point where the tool no longer performs with the power needed for the job. This may cause permanent damage and prevent the battery from taking a full charge in the future. Do not tape the trigger on the tool to discharge the battery.
What's in the Box Dewalt DC900KL cordless hammerdrill/drill/driver, two 36-volt battery packs, one-hour charger, 360-degree side handle, and a heavy-duty kit box.

I purchased the Milwaukee 18 volt lithium 1/2" hammer drill kit and could not be happier. I had read excellent reviews about this item and they were all accurate. This thing is powerful and the batteries seem to stay charged forever. It's heavier than some cordless drills, but then it's so much more powerful. It has a metal chuck ( not plastic like the competition ) and the chuck jaws are carbide which helps grip the bit. I like it so much I bought a second drill body only to compliment the kit. I was never a fan of cordless tools, but Milwaukee has changed all that.

I love this hammer 10 min out of the box I am removing a 80 year old fireplace flu. This thing is a beast. I know that bosch is known for the best hammers, but the comparable
bosch is $80 more and almost same specs. I figured the money I saved can be spent on bits and with SDS MAX bits they are expensive. This thing blazes through tile and with a few
outlineing holes will cut through a basment wall in minutes. I am self employed and buy lots of tools when I get a new tool I use the tool for a month or so before I write my
name on it I used this for 1 week straight for 40 to 60 min at a time and was so impressed I wrote my name on it that day without worry of having to send it back. If you need
a good rotary hammer this could be the one for you and a great price as well.

Bosch 11263EVS 1-3/4-Inch SDS-Max Rotary Hammer Review

Bosch 11263EVS 1-3/4-Inch SDS-Max Rotary Hammer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As with many homeowners, I have occasional need for a hammer drill-type tool, and have happily rented one for $50 a day as required. Lately, I had a three week project that involved concrete chiseling, asphalt cutting, rebar driving, concrete and cinder block drilling, and tamping of crushed limestone and cold-patch asphalt. Let's see, $50 x 3 x 7 = $1050 = "too much", time to buy the tool that can do all this, assuming it can be had for less than the rental.
After much Googling, reading reviews in tool magazines, talking with tech support at companies such as Bosch, Milwaukee, etc; I decided that what I needed was a tool that primarily is a light weight version of a jackhammer, with the ability to also rotate a cutting bit whilst hammering for certain chores. The solution meant that I needed a rotary hammer, not a hammer drill (former always hammers, but can also turn, latter always turns, but can also hammer...got that?).
Next step was to decide on how big a rotary hammer was needed, and 1-5/8" seemed best after consulting experts. Variable speed was also desirable, as was "SDS-Max" chuck, as apposed to the older spline type chuck; all manufacturers said that spline is dead or dying, and SDS-Max is the new standard, and most bits in the future will be available in this style.
The Bosch model 11264EVS was the closest match, at least in a high quality brand (no Harbor Freight Chinese tools for my shop, not anymore, thanks). Bosch make an otherwise identical rotary hammer that takes the spline bits instead, by the way. The EVS suffix means that it has the variable speed function, but for a few $ less they have one without the EVS.
The SDS-Max is a spring loaded chuck for one-handed tool insertion and removal. Pull back the chuck ring with one hand while holding the hammer with the other hand, and it stays in this 'cocked' position. Simply insert the shaft of the SDS-Max style bit into the chuck, and when the end of the bit reaches the rear of the chuck, the chuck internally snaps closed on it, locking the bit to the tool. To remove the bit, pull back the ring and the bit practically falls out by itself.
The hammer has two indicating lamps; one shows power is on (cord plugged in to power source), and the other lights up when the tool needs service, which is usually when the bearings have worn out. Bosch has a service for replacing these when the go, which is not for a long time; unless you use this every day professionally, you will probably never see this light turned on.
The hammer has two triggers; the top one starts the motor when in hammer-only mode, and acts like the variable speed trigger on a regular electric drill when on rotary hammer mode. The bottom trigger stops the motor when in hammer-only mode. To clarify, in drill (rotary hammer) mode, you squeeze and hold the top trigger, and the amount you squeeze it determines the speed, and in hammer-only mode, any amount of squeeze of the top trigger locks the motor in 'on' at a fixed speed, no need to hold the trigger, and the lower trigger turns the tool off.
There is also a variable speed knob which is used to set the maximum speed the tool can reach when the trigger is fully pressed in (in rotary hammer mode only).
On the top of the hammer if a large knob to select the mode. One position is for rotary hammer mode, the middle position unlocks the chuck's rotation, and the third position is for hammer-only mode. You use the middle position to decide which angle you want the bit locked to when in hammer-only mode (where the hammer is not rotating the bit). There are 12 detents that you can rotate the bit to when the knob is in the middle position, and returning the know to hammer-only position locks the bit in that position.
The hammer has two handles; a fixed handle with anti-vibration shock absorber, and a secondary handle near the chuck. By twisting the secondary handle's grip, it is unlocked and can then be rotated anywhere around the chuck, left, right, up, down, or in between.
Hammer construction seems to be almost all metal with plastic trim and outer housing as required to make it double-insulated. Grips are rubberized.
The hammer itself is pretty quiet, with most noise being made by whatever bit you are using impacting whatever you are using it on.
I bought the concrete chisel, the asphalt cutter chisel, the tamping plate and its rod bit, and the ground rod hammer bit (which I use for sinking rebar deep into the ground). Each of these is priced at about $50, so they add about $200 to the price of the hammer. The hammer comes in a large case made of tough plastic. The case has compartments to hold a tube of oil (which comes with it) and several bits, including large once like the tamping plate and the asphalt cutter; you can probably fit most bits in the case along with the tool itself.
The hammer takes almost 15 amps, so make sure you have a heavy duty extension cord and an outlet on a circuit that is not also running something heavy like a fridge, air conditioner, etc.
This is a first rate quality tool, and you pay for that quality. I am quite pleased with mine.

The Bosch 11263EVS SDS-max Combination Hammer features 2 modes of operation - rotary hammer or hammer-only and is a heavy-hitter with 9.6 ft. lbs. of impact energy in drilling mode and 1.1 ft. lbs. in Chiseling Turbo Mode. The SDS-max bit system allows tool-free bit changes with automatic bit locking, dust protection and maximum impact energy transfer rate. This variable speed dial gives the user accurate bit starting and controlled chipping applications while Constant Response circuitry provides soft-start, maintains constant speed under load, provides overload protection. The Turbo Power feature delivers 20% more power in hammer only mode. As with many Bosch hammers, a Service Minder light indicates when preventative maintenance is required. Vario-Lock positioning rotates and locks chisel into 12 different positions to optimize working angle while a360 Auxiliary handle provides a wide range of movement along with operator comfort. The soft grip rear handle absorbs shock and vibration for operator comfort and less fatgue.

Makita BHP454 18-Volt LXT 1/2-Inch Lithium-Ion Cordless Hammer Drill Kit Review

Makita BHP454 18-Volt LXT 1/2-Inch Lithium-Ion Cordless Hammer Drill Kit
Average Reviews:

Popular Mechanics' glowing review of this drill is well deserved in my opinion. It is light, fast, well-balanced, and easy to use. Bosch's competing model (17618-01) feels faster and stronger, but it also weighs a ton, is a bit lengthy, requires you to switch between driving and drilling modes by rotating the 25 position clutch selector all the way back to zero, and the side handle slipped around a lot on the floor model I played with.
With the 9-9/16" Makita you can instantly flip between driver, drill and hammer modes with a little switch, hoist it above your head for extended periods of time without strain, and the forward/reverse selector is also much easier to hit. Throw in the handy depth gauge thingy and the belt clip and it's tough to miss those extra few BPMs Bosch has to offer unless you plan on dropping your drill on concrete with any degree of frequency. I can't comment on Bosch's battery life claims as I did not use one long enough to wear it down, but if you really need a lot more power than this, get something with a cord.
This will absolutely not replace anybody's rotary hammer, but if all you need to do is plant some Tapcons or knock a hole through some brick to pull cable through, it's a wondrous jack of all trades drill indeed. I have no complaints so far.

DEWALT DCD970KL 18-Volt XRP Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit Review

DEWALT DCD970KL 18-Volt XRP Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit
Average Reviews:

I bought this drill to replace my Dewalt DC925, which fell off a roof and landed in a big nasty mud hole, I just figured the drill was toast and ordered a new one, saved the 925 for salvageable parts. The DCD950 and the DCD970 are the EXACT same drill except the clutch ring, which is black on the 950 and silver on the 970. The difference is the batteries that are included 950 has the XRPs and 970 has the new NANO's(lithium-ion). OK, back to the comparison
Pros of the DCD970/950 VS. the DCD925
1. Much Better balance
2. More power in both low and mid-range(Dewalt says the DC925 has 480 unit watts vs the DCD970's 450, but the DCD970 is more powerful
3. WAY smoother speed selector (moves back and forth, not in an semi-ellipse like the 925)
4. L.E.D light on front
5. Shorter in length
6. Drill/screw/hammerdrill, various clutch settings are no longer on the same ring, clutch now has its own ring.
Cons of the DCD970
1. Due to pressure from a group of so called "tool users" who ONLY seem to care about aesthetics, Dewalt changed the base to the new nano style, which means if you actually use the drill it only has space for one bit on the front and WILL Not hold a screw guide or short nutsetters very well, whereas the old style base could fit a screw guide for TEK screws on one side and a 1/4" and 5/16" short nutsetters for tapcons on the other side.
However, overall the DCD970/950 is a excellent drill and deserves 4.75 stars, if Dewalt would change the base it would be a 5 star item, but that will never happen thanks to people who care more about how a tool looks rather than how well it works.
6-6-2009
I cleaned off my old DC925 and put in a fresh battery and the thing works!! Well now I have two, I guess that is what I get for asuming things, oh well I like the DCD970 better anyway.
