Milwaukee 0624-24 18-Volt 1/2-Inch Lok-Tor Hammer-Drill Kit Review

Average Reviews:

I bought this drill about two years ago in a combo pack. I have used large spade bits through thick stock and the drill doesn't even flinch. In fact, I think this thing would twist my hand off before it gave! Warning, use the clutch on delicate items! The only drawbacks are the drill is larger and heavier that other 18 volts I've tried and replacement batteries are big bucks. I guess its the price of all that power. I have also used the hammer setting when going into concrete. Works as well as a corded drill. Battery life seems good, you can make a lot of holes and drive a lot of screws on one charge. The chuck is solid but will slip like any other keyless if you don't snug it down. I have worked this drill very hard over the past two years and while I have given it cosmetic scars it shows no signs of giving out anytime soon. Go to a store, pick-up and feel all the 18 volt drills. The Milwaukee just feels much more solid than all the rest. You will not regret this purchase!

Palmgren 32803 83 Rotary Cross 8.0-Inch Top Slide Table Review

We received the rotary cross slide table and were surprised by the age of the table. Although it is still in its original packaging, it is not the current model. My guess is that it is 15+ years old. The x and y movements are hard due to the age (it takes two hands). The unit will have to be disassembled, cleaned and lubricated. See the "customer image" that I uploaded for the actual picture of the unit.

Bosch 13618 18 Volt Brute Tough Hammerdrill Review

Bosch 13618 18 Volt Brute Tough Hammerdrill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned one of these for about 2.5 years and so far no serious complaints as this has been a consistently reliable tool. It has more than justified its high price with its solid performance--for most small masonry applications this drill has proven itself more than adequate. I have been in situations where I have had to really abuse this tool--drilling 1/2" holes in aged cement and while this tool couldn't keep up like a corded it still hasn't died. Oh, and these 18v batteries will work in my 24v Bosch tools, but their 24v batteries will not work in this 18v drill.
The batteries leave something to be desired and the weight still feels excessive to me for 18v--I purchased the 18v instead of an 24v SDS because I don't have masonry applications that often and would like a full-size drill that could handle the infrequent times when I would have to drill brick or concrete, but still be light enough for general use. That said, I have the 24v jigsaw and circular saw from Bosch, and I'm not sure that it wouldn't have been a better idea for me to get the 24v hammerdrill for battery interchangeability. The 18v is still pretty heavy--the carabiner clip on the bottom of the drill's handle seems like a great idea until you actually try to use it and then find it pulling your pants down around your ankles. The drill feels solid and well-made--although on mine the clutch's inked on numbers as well as the BOSCH name painted in red on the side of the motor have basically scratched off entirely. The included side handle is nice and the case is surprisingly decent.
I'm generally happy with this purchase, but I'm not sure it is necessarily the best option out there. I have a Metabo 15.6v I like more for general use and for serious hammerdrills I wish I had probably went either with the 24v Bosch SDS or the comparable Hilti 24v, or even the 19.2v P/C's. If I was doing a lot of masonry drilling inevitably I would have to go with a corded anyway.

DEWALT DC900KL 36-Volt 1/2-inch Lithium Ion Cordless Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit with NANO Technology Review

DEWALT DC900KL 36-Volt 1/2-inch Lithium Ion Cordless Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit with NANO Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A little background - I have virtually all the 18v tools that DeWalt has made, including two 18v hammer drills. I have built numerous houses with their tools, and done countless remodeling projects. You could say I'm a fan!
That said, the 36v hammer drill really hasn't impressed me. It is huge, so it doesn't fit in some spaces where the 18v will fit, and the power doesn't seem to be that much better. On the rare occasion that I need something more powerful than the 18v drill, I'm probably reaching for my Milwaukee wrist-wreaker (corded) or a 2" roto-hammer.
I really like the 36v line, and am impressed by the circular saw and recip saw. This drill just seems like a tool without a need. It rarely leaves my shop to go on a job, and I never use it at home either. It was part of a combo promotional kit, so I can't complain about the price, but I don't think I'd buy it outright.

The Dewalt DC900KL Heavy-Duty 36-Volt Cordless 0.5-inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit raises the bar for multi-use hammerdrills -- both corded and cordless. Engineered with a revolutionary 36-volt battery, the DC900KL provides professional users with increased levels of power, runtime, and battery life, while maintaining a similar weight to corded and other 18-volt hammerdrill/drill/drivers. The drill gives professional contractors the performance of a corded tool with the flexibility of a cordless drill.
Features, Speed and Runtime Dewalt designed the DC900KL with a patented three-speed transmission that optimizes the speed applied to each application. This feature offers professional end users maximum performance for a variety of heavy-duty applications. For example, the first speed is ideal for use with hole saws and self feed bits when drilling large holes in wood. The second speed is designed for use with auger bits or screwdriving. And the third speed is meant for hammer drilling into concrete. Additionally, the DC900KL is equipped with a 0.5-inch self-tightening chuck that automatically tightens throughout operation. This provides the end user with over twice the bit gripping torque of a traditional keyless chuck. To withstand the most demanding applications and the most extreme jobsite environments, Dewalt has designed the DC900KL with a high level of durability and reliability. For added comfort and control, this multi-use drill has an anti-slip comfort grip that makes it easy to handle.
When compared to the industry's leading corded and cordless hammerdrills, the DC900KL drills faster and longer than the competition. When tested against other corded hammerdrills by drilling a 1.375-inch hole saw into 20-gauge steel, the DC900KL was able to drill through the material in 3.87 seconds -- 22-percent faster than the Milwaukee 0234 and 300 corded hammerdrills. When testing the runtime of the tool, the DC900KL drilled an average of 67 holes using a 2.5625-inch self-feed bit through 2x10-inch boards -- 2.6 times the number of holes drilled by the industry's leading 18-volt hammerdrill/drill/driver.
The DC900KL has the ability to complete a variety of heavy-duty applications, such as drilling in wood with self-feed bits, auger bits and hole saws, fastening lag bolts and hammerdrilling in concrete as fast or faster than leading corded drills. Combined with up to three times the runtime of 18-volt drills, the DC900KL brings new levels of productivity to any jobsite.
Dewalt's Revolutionary 36V Battery The 36-volt cordless battery platform was developed to provide professional contractors with the performance needed to complete high-powered applications that were previously only possible with corded tools. By partnering with A123 Systems -- a developer of a new generation of lithium-ion batteries developed at and exclusively licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) -- Dewalt's 36V line of tools are equipped with a unique Nano-Phosphate lithium-ion design. These revolutionary batteries offers a high level of power, long run-time and durability when compared to conventional lithium technology. In fact, this technology delivers a battery with a maximum life of over 2,000 recharges and no frustrating battery memory. With this breakthrough innovation, this 36-volt tool is sure to live up to Dewalt's commitment to providing Guaranteed Tough products for the professional end user.
Note: Do not try to discharge the battery beyond the point where the tool no longer performs with the power needed for the job. This may cause permanent damage and prevent the battery from taking a full charge in the future. Do not tape the trigger on the tool to discharge the battery.
What's in the Box Dewalt DC900KL cordless hammerdrill/drill/driver, two 36-volt battery packs, one-hour charger, 360-degree side handle, and a heavy-duty kit box.

Arbortech Mini Grinder Complete w/Motor Review

Arbortech Mini Grinder Complete w/Motor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great versatile machine. Easy to maneuver, and takes quite a bit off. Much like a mini chainsaw. There's minimal kickback, and you can carve all day without much strain. Great for detail work up to a point. You can sculpt out main forms, and use detail grinders for the delicate work. Great product all around except for its incompatibility with other grinders (for those purchasing only the head unit) due to the nut hex. I recommend purchasing the complete unit instead. While switching and changing seems like a money saving venture, it's more headache than it's worth. It takes time to change out the head, and yet before you do so, you have to purchase the correct nut, because Arbortech's nut isn't universal. Trust me, it's a hassle you don't need. On Amazon, Treeline sells the complete unit for $213 because they are the only distributor here. It's a rip off. Buy it at Bailey's. I can't provide the link due to Amazon's linking policy. Just google it. They sell the complete set there for $169. Make sure you also purchase the carbide cutter. It's super for detail work that the stock carver blade is too crude for. Good luck.
Update as of 6/24/2010: I just recently bought a replacement carbide cutter blade from Bailey's for this tool and discovered that their price for this item has increased to $239. Just a heads up for those who didn't get the chance to purchase it when the price was low. Good luck.

Milwaukee 0724-24 28-Volt V28 Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Cordless Hammer Drill/Driver Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used Milwaukee's 18v drill for years (I own two of them) and they've never failed me. By far, the best cordless drill available... until now. When Milwaukee came out with their V28 line, I was intrigued, but I didn't need a new drill. Besides, the 18v drill I had worked fine, I didn't think it was necessary to upgrade (especially for the price). When it came time to buying a hammer drill, I looked again at the V28 hammer-drill and decided to buy one, figuring it would at least allow me to combine two tools into one and save the room in my car. I ended up getting a LOT more then I expected.
First, the belt clip is amazing. I didn't think twice about it when I read the drill's description, since I have a holster that works fine. The holster's now in the garbage as the belt clip is absolutely ingenious. Now I can easy attach the drill to my belt without looking and it's fully secure. With one hand I can push down on the latch and detach the drill for use... a marvelous idea. Best thing about it is I can also use it with my V28 flashlight when I need to.
Another thing I really like about this new drill is the bit holder... I always liked the idea of DeWalt's drill's holding the single bits, but Milwaukee provides a place for two. However, the only downside to this is if you use the drill in the hammer-drill setting, the bits tend to slide out after prolonged use.
Then there's the power... one of my first uses was drilling a 1" hole at an angle through two old 1x10 joists and a 2x4 in order to run a wire. I've done it several times with my old 18v, but I always end up having to reverse back a bit then start again to get a bit of momentum. If I can, I normally leave the job up to a corded drill to make things nice a quick. Not anymore... the V28 ripped right through the wood without the slightest problem. The power difference between the 18v and the V28 is shocking... you'd think you were using a corded drill.
The hammer-drill function was another big plus for me... I used this drill side by side with another corded Milwaukee hammer drill to drill numerous holes into a concrete foundation. The cordless worked just as well as the corded... no difference at all, except I wasn't lugging around a cord.
Lastly, there's the longevity of the charges... usually I'll go through at least one full battery and charge it on the site. Again, not anymore. I rarely need to use the second battery during a single day.
If I could, I'd give it six-stars. This thing is just incredible.

Sporting the longest running 28-volt hammer drill on the market, Milwaukee’s V28 lithium-ion cordless kit is always charged up for the beefiest drilling and driving applications. The tool switches easily between drill, drive, and hammer modes for less downtime and smoother transitions between tasks. Powering the V28 is Milwaukee’s revolutionary 28-Volt Lithium-Ion battery pack. The 28-volt battery pack weighs less than an 18-volt NiCad pack yet delivers twice the runtime. And, a patented battery design lets you insert the battery in the reverse position for optimal balance when working overhead or in hard-to-reach areas.
The V28 hammer-drill comes standard with a ½-inch all-metal, single-sleeve, ratcheting chuck with carbide jaws that keep bits from falling out or slipping. If you have to drill hundreds of holes, this is the tool. I had to drill about 175 holes through the flange of W14x43 steel. This size steel has 1/2" thick flanges. I drilled a 7/16" hole through in seconds. It's amazing! The magnet is very powerfull. I put all my weight (175lbs) on it and it wouldn't budge. It comes with a safety strap and use it, especially if your working with a crew that might accidently cut off your power supply for what ever reason. It paid for it self on this one job for me.

JET JDP-17MF/354169 Drill Press Review

JET JDP-17MF/354169 Drill Press
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the second Jet drill press I have owned. The first had the same problem as the second and Jet replaced it free of charge, even though out of warranty. I have owned this drill press for just over two years now and it is used but not abused. The problem is that after using the depth stop, as is the case with a good majority of holes the spindle kicks over to the side of the drill press that the stop is mounted on. This has a tendency of causing drill walk as well as an out of round condition of the hole itself. After grabbing and shaking the quill a great amount of play is noticable from just hand force. This would indicate worn bearings. The fact that the first drill press had the same defect as this one tells me that Jet knows it has a problem but evidentally isn't that concerned about fixing it. I have owned and still do own other Jet tools but this drill press is the worst. Vibration and noise are other built in features you might encounter. I will replace it soon and doubt that the new one will have the Jet logo on it. Take a second look it might be worth your while.

I have used this tool to drill and tap many holes in machine bases and bolster plates that were too large or could not be moved to a drill press. Makita 6347DWDE 18-Volt NiMH Cordless Drill/Driver Kit Review

Average Reviews:

When I first saw the 18-volt powerhouse Makita 6347DWDE drill at this price -- which doesn't even include the significant manufacturer's rebate -- I thought it was too good to be true and quite possibly a misprint. I had to re-read the description and the fine print a few times before making my order.
After owning this drill for six months and using it on a number of projects, I couldn't be happier. The battery pack has proved more than adequate in delivering plenty of power over an extended time period and and it's great to have the backup available just in case. Charging is fast and easy, too.
Despite the size of this drill, it is surprisingly light and well-balanced, comfortable to use even at odd angles and at arms length. You absolutely can't go wrong here.
The benefits of owning quality power tools go without saying. And Makita is a name you can trust. This is not a toy ... it is the real deal. Don't settle for good when you can have the very best. It's definitely worth a few extra $$$.
Note: Take a look at the Makita 784874-A 15-Piece UltraLoc Set as a great accessory for this drill.

Here comes power and efficiency in a great compact size. Before you even press the trigger, you'll love how this tool fits in your hand, how well-balanced it is. The rubberized grip gives you a sure, comfortable hold, even at odd angles. Performance is top-notch, thanks to dual ball bearings, precision balancing and a refined high-grade field magnet. We're really impressed by Makita's exclusive Shift Lock Drive. With a single touch, you shift quickly and easily "drill" to "driver" mode, locking out the clutch for superior drilling. And we love it when manufacturers include two batteries with their tools, because that means no down time. The charger handles multi-volt batteries, too, so it's good for a wide range. Maintenance is simple because the brushes are accessible. A great, hardworking drill/driver.

Average Reviews:

I have this kit along with the Makita BDF452HW kit and love them both to pieces. Both are solid performers in every sense of the word and are very light as well. I have worked the crap out of both of them and they just keep asking for more. You simply cannot go wrong with either of these drills.
That being said the only difference between this kit (BDF452) and the BDF452HW is the color(white vs blue), the plastic grip around the chuck, and the batteries. The BDF452HW includes 1.5 ampere hour batteries, where this kit includes the 3.0ah batteries, offering twice the runtime. If you can deal with a shorter, but still surprisingly good, runtime, you can save about $100 and go with the BDF452HW.
Either way, expect a great tool that should last for many years to come.
(PS- There were those who had battery issues, but apparently Makita has worked them out, as I have 8 Makita LiOn power tools for over a year and have had no issues whatsoever with battery longevity.)

DELTA DP350 Shopmaster 1/3HP 12-Inch Bench Drill Press Review

DELTA DP350 Shopmaster 1/3HP 12-Inch Bench Drill Press
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The DP350 is a [mostly] well-designed tool of good quality, and a terrific bargain. This is the only reasonably priced variable-speed bench drill press I could find, so for the time being, Delta appears to have a unique product.
Delta says to tighten the head using the two supplied Allen screws to prevent the drill head from moving on the column. I wanted to be able to move it occasionally, so I installed handles attached to 5/16" x 18 threaded bolts. Now, I can loosen the head, and swing it in place, and re-tighten it, in seconds.
There was no obvious place to store the chuck. I fixed it to a small chain and connected one end to the lower column tightener, so it's handy.

The base is held down to the bench with lag screws or machine bolts. The four corners of the base touch the bench, with the middle of the base 1/8" off the bench. Install spacers directly under the hold-down bolts to keep from flexing the middle of the cast iron base.
Features:
I've owned multi-speed drill presses for 35 years and rarely changed speeds, as it was too much trouble to move the belts. So, I selected a middle speed and left it there, sometimes for years on end. With the DP350, I adjust speed based on the drilling to be done for each job - controlling speed is as easy as turning a handle and can be done in seconds. The drive belt never has to be moved.
Spindle RPMs are controlled by turning a control with two handles on the top front of the unit. As the control is turned, the motor and spindle pulley's effective diameter changes, altering spindle speed. Each pulley has an upper and lower half. When together, they look like any other pulley. They separate vertically as you change speed. As one pulley's effective diameter increases, the other decreases, and vice versa. The diameter of the pulleys doesn't actually change, but the place within the pulley that the belt rides, does. At the lowest speed, the motor pulley is at its smallest diameter (pulley sections apart), and the spindle pulley is at its largest diameter (pulley sections together). As the control is turned clockwise for more RPMs, the bottom of the spindle pulley moves down. This results in a smaller diameter spindle pulley and a larger motor pulley, thus increasing speed. It's a clever design that has worked reliably on my machine. In observing speed changes with the top cover off looking down at the belt and pulleys, speed seems to change at a linear rate, and with the motor always turning the same speed. (Click on customer images above for pulley photos at high and low speed.)
Warning: Don't force the speed control handle, as doing so can bend the inner part that separates the spindle's pulley halves. Only move the handle with the machine ON.
The press comes with a metalworking table (oil troughs in the table). However, it's easy to find a flat spot on the table bottom to clamp a wood piece down.
The adjustable-position locking depth stop (for repetitive hole depths) has a button for release for quick adjustments. Release the button - then screw the stop down or up for fine-tuning. It works fine.
The speed dial decal on my press inexplicably had only the lowest and highest speeds: 500 RPM and 3100 RPM. I calculated approximate RPMs at the beginning and end of each range, and made a new speed decal. (See customer photo of decal.)
Range 1: 500 to 760
Range 2: 800 to 1235
Range 3: 1305 to 1950
Range 4: 2060 to 3100
Negatives:
1. The table angle scale is practically useless. It's ?" below the table's scribe line so you have to swing the drill head to one side to get your eye in position to read it. That ?" gap makes accurate alignment of the scribe line to the scale imperfect, since any side-to-side eye movement changes the apparent reading.
2. Needed felt between the sheet metal case and cast iron to eliminate a rattle.
3. The top cover plate is held on with six machine screws, instead of a piano hinge. Install your own hinge, or drill two perfectly aligned holes in the plate, in order to oil the pulleys without removing the top plate.
4. The pinion handle seam needed sanding to smooth it out.
5. The lower head locking screw (5/16" x 18) is in cast iron only ?" thick. Over-tightening or repeated loosening/tightening could strip those threads.
Summary:
It's simple and quick to set the proper speed for each drilling task - the major feature of this tool, compared to other bench drill presses. Tool improvements are needed, but it's still a good bench drill press and an excellent bargain.
Post Script:
At least one reviewer had the drill chuck "fall off". Suggestion: thoroughly clean (e.g., with alcohol) the tapered chuck spindle and the chuck's mating surface, open the chuck all the way, and, using a wooden mallet, give it a good whack to reseat the chuck onto the spindle. Mine has stayed put for 2 years.
September 2005 update:
My DP-350 recently failed. The rear upper (belt) pulley connected directly to the motor, started wobbling, and the machine was making noises. This is the same problem reported by many others, but theirs died much sooner. A design flaw allows the upper pulley to slide off its inner sleeve, which renders the rear belt pulley, and the drill press, useless.
I repaired the drill in about 30 minutes using $2.00 worth of standard hardware. Here's how: Unscrew the top cover to access the motor pulley assembly; lift off the retaining ring with a removal tool, then remove the spring retainer cup, spring, upper pulley half and its inner sleeve. Once the upper rear pulley half is off the machine, drill two holes using drill size No. 3 in opposite sides of the thick part of the pulley base. Thread the holes with a ?" x 24 tap. Insert ?" long, ?" x 24, Allen screws, coated in Locktite, slip the pulley onto the sleeve, and tighten the screws. This will solidly hold the upper pulley onto its inner sleeve.
Similar-sized Allen screws are OK in lieu of ?" x 24. Click on customer images above for photos of screw location. If the old ring was stretched (& weakened) when you removed it, reassemble using a NEW retaining ring. Open the new ring only far enough to slip it into the groove on the motor shaft.
If you can't find the correct size retaining ring locally, go to: www dot dewaltservicenet dot com - part number 904160.
Delta responded to an e-mail regarding this design defect, as follows:
"We added a pin to the motor pulley to keep the bushing from coming out of the center of the pulley. This was fixed long ago, shortly after the tool came out. If you wish to speak with a technical representative regarding this, please call 1-800-223-7278."

Milwaukee 4270-21 9 Amp Electromagnetic Drill Press Kit Review

Milwaukee 4270-21 9 Amp Electromagnetic Drill Press Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this drill, but the picture that was shown on the website showed several annular cutters and the twist bit drill chuck - when the package arrived none of these items were inside! Since then (a week or so later) the image has been updated, and a more comprehensive description has been entered on the website. I think that Amazon.com is great in many ways, but sometimes there is a shortage of information on the website, this is the first time that I feel that I have been let down.

For remote drilling in metal, the 4270-21 is a great choice. It can drill up to 1 1/2in. diameter holes through 2in. thick steel with annular cutters, or 1/2in. diameter holes 4 1/4in. deep with twist drill bits. The tool is set up to accept standard 3/4in. Weldon shank cutters (not included). U.S.A. HP: 1.1, Amps: 9.0, Speed (RPM): 450, Drilling Capacity (in.): 1/2, Chuck Size (in.): 3/4

DELTA 17-950L 16.5-Inch TwinLaser Crosshair Drill Press Review

DELTA 17-950L 16.5-Inch TwinLaser Crosshair Drill Press
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently received the Delta 17-950L drill press and for the price after the current Amazon promotion, it's hard to beat. It is a well built machine that arrived in 1 business day via Eagle Global Logistics. I had no problems really assembling the unit on my own. The top is a little heavy, but I got it.
Positives:
- Smooth running with little vibration. It's not glass smooth, but it certainly is not rough. It runs just fine at 3000rpm
- Runout is very good, thanks to the larger 2" quill
- The table is finished nicely and is large. I installed a 68 pound Palmgren 6" cross sliding vise (take my advice and get a 4" for this size drill press) and the table assembly holds it fine. It makes it a bit more difficult to raise the table, but it's much better than I thought it would be.
- Assembly was easy and all of the parts were there.
- Laser assembly is very easy to adjust and aim.
- Allen wrenches and chuck removal tool are all included. All you need is a metric socket set or wrenches to assemble.
- Power seems to be good and I did not bog the unit down doing some wood and metal boring.
- Quill lock in the down position for using sanding drums, etc.
Negatives:
- Depth stop adjustment is on the spoked handle and doesn't exactly come across as high quality
- A little bit of vibration, but nothing out of the ordinary really.
- 3-7/8" quill stroke is a little on the shallow side, but still better than a lot of the drill presses out there.
Overall this is a nice drill press. I still have a 20-959LX on order which is Delta's new and yet to be released 20" variable speed drill press with digital readouts. This drill press is basically 1/3rd of the cost of that machine, but I don't feel it can only do 1/3rd of the jobs. I'm sure that this machine will last many years. The laser works great and is very handy. The table is nice and while this is one the lower end drill presses in Delta's lineup, it runs great, drills great, and comes across as a quality piece of equipment. I have no doubt there are nicer drill presses out there, but for the price this one deserves a look.
